UFC on Fox Results: Ben Henderson Earns Shot At Frankie Edgar In Japan

via Esther Lin of MMAFighting

Yesterday at the UFC on Fox weigh ins Joe Rogan announced that the winner of Clay Guida and Ben Henderson would be the number one contender for Frankie Edgar's lightweight belt. With the fight of the year candidate in the books and Henderson as the victor, the fight was made official at the post fight press conference. It was rumored that the next Frankie Edgar fight would be at Zuffa's first attempt to break into the Japanese market in January. Dana White confirmed this rumor tonight.

The Guida/Henderson fight did not disappoint tonight, going all three rounds to a Unanimous decision. It was the kind of fight that has fans begging for two more rounds. It was the kind of fight that had fans questioning why the UFC decided not to air it on television. Henderson was the aggressor the whole time and walked away as the new challenger. It was almost a year ago that he lost his shot at the title when Anthony Pettis upset him at WEC 53. What difference a year makes. Pettis is fighting on prelims and Ben Henderson is getting a title shot.

That's a fucking fight right there

Should be cool. I think Ben is the only guy at LW that can take Edgar down and keep him down.

No Way!

Edgar is going to run circles around him and Henderson will be incapable of getting takedowns in the ring against the ropes.

Absolutely

Two men with multiple FOTY performances at the championship level. I cant wait, I think Bendo has a shot but his striking defence is still lacking and I think Edgar could really hurt him in if stays standing for too long.

I never said that

But Edgar is a good striker and who has only been hurt by good strikers. Bendo isn’t nearly as skilled as Maynard or Penn in the standup department.

I really don’t see that happening.

I wouldn't say mops the floor.

But a Bendo win wouldn’t shock me.

Eh

I don’t know about mops the floor. Frankie’s boxing could easily give him fits, but as I said before, Bendo might be the only person in all of LW that can take Edgar down and keep him down.

How funny would it be if Bendo wins the title and then his first defence is against Cerrone?

Mind blown.

Nah I think he crushes Nate

But I think he’d lose to the top tier guys like Melendez, Edgar, hell maybe even Florian.

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

It’s weird that Bendo can win the title and Pettis won’t be fighting for a shot anytime soon.

Every since this bout was announced people continued to ask why it wasn’t on TV. Its amazing that after the WHC match that UFC decided to show the WW fight instead of my (and tons of others) FOTN: Henderson/Guida. I think this boils down to Dana and company believing (and seeing) the smaller guys don’t draw. Look no further then the poor buyrates UFC 125 pulled as well as 132 and the most recent card with Flo/Aldo and Maynard/Edgar III at the helm. Those guys put on hell of fights, but GSP and who he challenges draws more money and UFC has to paper less which is why I think they have decided to promote the WWE fight tonight and slide Guida/Henderson under the rug so to speak.

by Ghost Battousai on Nov 13, 2011 1:41 AM EST reply actions

people keep saying that lighter weights dont draw cause of 125

but lets face the facts that the UFC didnt do half the work they usually do to promote the fight. They completely looked over it to promote their “golden boy” GSP.. The lighter weight classes can easily draw if the UFC cared and actually did the same work they do for their “chosen ones”. Unfortunately it really comes down to who the UFC likes the most. If they like you they will promote you….theyll make the extra effort. Advertisement can make the colds hot and make the hots cold “if you know what i mean” but if Dana doesnt care about it hes not going to do what needs to be done to make it a must see weight class.

This

The UFC has failed repeatedly to properly promote the smaller guys. You can’t keep burying them on fucking Facebook and then complain that no one knows who they are. No shit.

If Bendo can get this into the clinch, I don’t see Edgar competing much there. However if Edgar can keep distance, Edgar wins the standup easily.

Edgar can probably get the odd takedown too, but I seriously doubt he can keep him there for any period of time.

Bendo/Guida didn't air on Fox?

Wait…it didn’t air at any time on Fox? I watched the event on Rogers Sportsnet in Canada and they showed Henderson/Guida before the main event. I just figured Fox had changed their minds.

by Helder on Nov 13, 2011 2:48 AM EST reply actions

Nope, Fox itself didn’t show it but all of the other stations showing the prelim fights did since they didn’t have access to the Dana/Brock stuff.

Henderson is a lot bigger than Edgar and is a bit more fluid than Maynard, but I still think Frankie outboxes him on the feet if he can deal with the kicks. I see the wrestling as about even. Bendo was able to take Guida down, but not for very long. Edgar is a lot better than Guida overall. Should be a great fight though.

by discoandherpes on Nov 13, 2011 2:53 AM EST reply actions

i agree frankie can outboxes him. but no way is their wrestling even. Bendo is more aggressive on the takedowns and has better transition when it hits there . Dont be surprised if you see frankie getting taken down over and over then ground and pounded on for the 4th round tko.

Why does Bendo insist on leaving his neck out to be choked in every fight? I’m not sure if it is stupidity or arrogance but he consistently seems to be putting himself in position to be submitted. It kills me because he is usually in control when this happens.

Not to say that Frankie didn’t have problems with Gray, but if he can finish Maynard I’m fairly certain he can handle Bendo and Cowboy as well.

Let's get naked and see who's stronger.

by OwMyArm on Nov 13, 2011 5:19 AM EST up reply actions

Bendo biggest weakness is his boxing. But he is much tougher than Maynard and a much more complete fighter. He kicks, he knees, very good in the clinch, has great flexibility, virtually unsubmittable, great balance and stamina and a good chin. Edgar is a typical in an out point scorer. He is tough to knock out and he is fast, but he has weak hands and he almost never puts weight behind a punch.
So I guess the best way for Bendo to handle it is to pin Edgar against the cage or take him down and keep him down.

Paper- rock- scissors

Styles make fights. Guida is pretty much a strong, relentless wrestler with dirty boxing. Pettis’ counterwrestling is improving, but he’s mainly a Muay Thai/ BJJ type fighter. Bendo is a very strong inside fighter, and a strong overall grappler.

Bendo lacked the takedowns and striking to best Pettis; Pettis lacked the wrestling to stop Guida; Bendo was strong enough to thwart Guida’s wrestling and was the better inside fighter.

It’s like the old boxing rochambeau: Boxer beats brawler, brawler beats in- fighter, in- fighter beats boxer.

Clay Guida really surprised me in this match. I thought he going to get manhandled.

But he put it to Henderson, and if it was anyone else he would have choked them out multiple times. Idk what Guida has been doing but he fought nothing like his usual self, and instead fought MUCH better and if he continues fighting like that, I could see him getting a shot in the future. Because Guida,Cerrone, and Diaz are about equal.
