UFC on Fox Results: Junior dos Santos Crushes Cain Velasquez, Becomes New UFC Heavyweight Champion

Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos met in the main event of the UFC's debut on Fox. Photo by Esther Lin, MMAFighting.com

It didn't take Junior dos Santos long to prove he's the world's best heavyweight as he knocked out Cain Velasquez in only sixty-four seconds into the first round to become the new UFC heavyweight champion.

Cain started off strong with leg kicks, but Dos Santos stunned Velasquez with a heavy overhand right during the toe-to-toe action that downed the champion. Dos Santos followed up with brutal ground and pound strikes that eventually led to the referee stopping the action.

Velasquez entered tonight's contest undefeated at 9-0. He won the UFC heavyweight title last October in a Knockout of the Night performance against Brock Lesnar. He previously defeated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in a title eliminator match-up at UFC 110 in February of last year.

Dos Santos only has one blemish on his record, a loss to Joaquim Ferreira from a bout in Brazil back in 2007. Since that loss, Dos Santos has gone 8-0 with his last win coming by way of a dominant, one-sided beatdown of Shane Carwin at UFC 131. The victory served as a title eliminator, solidifying Dos Santos' spot as the #1 contender.

Reem's guard needs revamping

He can’t shell up like he did in K-1. 4 oz gloves are too small, and Junior WILL sneak a bomb through if Alistair deals with punches as he has been lately his entire career.

Overeem’s entire striking style bothers me. I’m not entirely sure why it does, though. Perhaps it’s the whole “walk ’em down and unload with bombs” strategy in general.

by Pyrgz Krum on Nov 12, 2011 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's even more than that

He walks you down, takes the best you can give til you’re winded, and then unloads. That works with giant shields on your fist in tandem with massive forearms, but not with 4 ouncers.

Still a Cain fan!

Long layoff against a bonafide killer did him in today, but he will be back for sure.. and I could see him potentially winning the next one.

Damn dude

You don’t think Cain is a great fighter?

It shows how good JDS is that he beat the champion, but it doesn’t take away from all of the accomplishments and prowess of Cain.

by eyeIess on Nov 12, 2011 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

I never said Cain wasn’t a great fighter. I think he is. It just annoys me that once he won the title everyone and their mother came out the woodwork to basically declare their love for him. Where were they before? I didn’t hear many Mexican fans proclaim him the greatest and be on him this much until he won the title. Bad way to look at it? Sure, I guess. It just pleases me when an entire audience filled with Cain bandwagoners get silenced by the dude they booed the entire night.

Anyone comlaining about the length

Must have missed Mike Tyson in his prime.

The question is will the casual fan and non-fan respond to a non-American champion? Tyson had the benefit of being form the good ol’ US of A as well as appeal to the Black American Boxing demographic.

Yeah, but doesn’t Tyson’s fights have televised undercard fights before his fight? You just get to soak more in and build up to the main event better with more fights, not just have one super quick fight, and that’s it.

Nobody was saying

Sure, Tyson bombing that guy was cool, but without that cool 12 round undercard fight, that card would have been a waste of money. They said OMFG TYSON!!!!! (In…you know…whatever the 80s speak equivalent was)

by Trysdor on Nov 12, 2011 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

This is MMA though. Undercard fights actually help the broadcast at times and overall entertainment of the show. I have heard fans say that they like MMA because more than just the main event is entertaining, and that the undercard delivers as well. Also, who knows who JDS and Velasquez are? Tyson was able to sell on his name, and these two aren’t really names yet. I don’t think the comparisons really work here.

Tyson in his prime -1987. 1988 and 1989 are nothing but jokes and he lost to Douglas in 1990.

Holmes was way past his prime when he fought Tyson. Spinks was a great before he moved up to heavyweight and got a gift decision against Holmes. He was neither big enough nor strong enough to compete with heavyweights with KO power.

Cigano!

I couldn’t be happier! Brown Pride get smashed in under two minutes. To say that Cain was overhyped would be the understatement of the year! BP had only nine fights going into the title defense — not to mention over a year on the shelf due an injury — there is no way he is ready for the top levels. BP’s whole Mexican heritage persona comes across as very inauthentic. This is particularly true when he’s fighting a guy who grew up in South America.

The Fox show? Frankly, I was shocked that the ufc was going to base their show on one fight. We are we so excited about awesome fights? Because they happen so infrequently. And they almost never happen at heavyweight. I really can’t imagine what the first time UFC viewer took away from that. There wasn’t much to see.

It wasn’t the worst scenario. It wasn’t even a bad scenario. Everyone saw a fast, exciting KO.

The only thing that sucked about that fight was that it had a terrible time spent/combat ratio. It makes the 6 hour Japanese events seem to the be soul of brevity. But the Fox Sports pros know exactly how to cover for it. Sure, it would have been awesome if instead of wanking for 30 minutes they had cut to Bendo. But how could they know they would have such an awesome fight in the bank?

Never said it was the worst case scenario, but it was the UFC’s time to shine and it came up lacking a bit. But then again that’s part of the business – you never know what a fight will actually be like.

You can on the other hand predict which fight will be good and would showcase the product you’re trying to sell. Bendo v. Guida was bound to be exciting from the get go however long it lasted. No doubt about it.

That’s not really the way it works in modern, high-level mma. JDS has shown very good takedown defense. Unless you have a massive wrestling advantage over your opponent, successful takedowns don’t often come from just streamrolling your opponent. You usually have to set them up with striking. The fight didn’t even go one minute until Cain was dropped and he attempted one takedown, was he just supposed to go for chaingun takedown attempts throughout the fight? That’s a great way to get knocked out.

Cain has also shown overall good hands/chin/recovery, and while JDS obviously has knockout power, recently Nelson and Carwin lasted the distance with him. Dos Santos may have had the advantage standing, but people weren’t expecting him to blow Cain out of the water in one minute, especially when he always had to be weary of the TD while Cain could choose to put 100% to either TDs or striking.

The REEM beats JDS easily

Hello Ace

by New_User on Nov 13, 2011 7:10 AM EST up reply actions

The years and years the UFC spent

Wanting total control over their product—yeah. They were absolutely right about that.

The UFC wanted Bendo/Guida on the televised card. Fox didn’t. The UFC was right and Fox was wrong. Hopefully in the future the UFC makes most of the decisions.

And JDS is even better than I thought he was. Well, that’s that then.

by Lauren J Darkbloom on Nov 12, 2011 10:29 PM EST reply actions

This was a shortened card to my understanding the rest will be longer

this was a bonus to the 4 fight a year deal they signed with Fox that wasn’t supposed to start til next year, Fox asked UFC to throw on 1 fight before the Pacquio fight, everyone needs to get over the Henderson thing, I watched it on Facebook no problem in pretty high quality, didn’t take away from anything for me at all.

by Iwasfn47 on Nov 12, 2011 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

OK, not sure what you are responding to but

Hopefully the UFC primarily makes the decisions from now on and not Fox, regardless of how long the shows are.

by Lauren J Darkbloom on Nov 12, 2011 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

FOX dropped the ball not showing any highlights of another fight

But I wonder if it’s a contractual issue.

Look, if Cain spent a solid 2.5 minutes trying to take JDS down against the cage, people would bitch. If it was a Garcia-type of fight, a section of people would bitch that it’s street-fighting. If it was Shogun vs. Machida I sans BS decision, people would bitch that there wasn’t enough blood.

It is impossible to please the masses. A lot of people are going to find this fight appealing and the KO will have them craving more because it was so short. Others will go to Twitter and bitch that it was too short. That’s how it goes. Live with it.

If this thing gets great ratings then the UFC won and FOX won.

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

by SSreporters on Nov 12, 2011 10:30 PM EST reply actions   2 recs

Exactly, Dana’s gonna bitch because Cain didnt take him down.

Lets say Cain did take him down and the crowd got bored and started booing and/or people who tuned in thought this is gay and tuned out. No scenario is gonna be perfect.

Not to mention that in MMA

you generally have to set up your take-downs with strikes somehow. I mean even Brock and Chael…

Oh nevermind, who cares. Dana’s gonna Dana. He wanted a 5-round fight that would be the greatest back-and-forth battle ever, didn’t get it, and now he needs someone to blame.

There’s no one to blame. Things just went the way they went and he would be better off just cheering up and rambling about how Cigano is a “freak of nature” or whatever. There will be more UFC’s on Fox.

So is it safe to say

that Cain wasn’t a true champion because he didn’t defend his belt? And Brock was a better champion due to his 2 title defenses?

Cain was getting off a shoulder injury and shaking off ring rust

unless you are Rashad 2. f’in 0 ring rust usually can make you lose fights

I am willing to test myself against the toughest fighters in the world, in front of hundreds of thousands or even millions of fans, over and over again. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but I always come to fight. I've been doing this for the past fourteen years, and I have at least a few more strong years left in me. What have you done in the past fourteen years other than act like a moron on this forum and hang on Anderson's nuts? - Dan Henderson.

I really want to say “I FUCKING TOLD YOU SO BITCHES” and talk about how he was the most overhyped out of all the current UFC champions and mention his overrated striking/striking defense, oh and talk about how ridiculous it is that fans thought he could stand and bang against JDS when he got dropped by Kongo 3 fights ago and then proceeded to beat the corpse of Nogueria and Brock “Don’t punch me in the face” Lesnar

But I’ll get so much hate, so instead I’ll just blame it on the shoulder injury

by Unabomberman on Nov 12, 2011 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

Who does that anymore? Seriously. People keep saying this but it doesn’t make much sense. Unless you have a massive wrestling advantage, you complete takedowns by mixing them up with strikes and catching your opponent off guard. JDS has shown very good takedown defense…good luck trying to get him down when he’s fresh and can see your TD coming a mile away. It wasn’t even one minute until Cain got dropped and he did try one takedown, I don’t know what people were expecting from him…telegraphed takedown attempts every 20 seconds? That’s a great way to get knocked out.
