In a Welterweight fight at UFC on Fox 1, DaMarques Johnson (12-9; 3-3 UFC) faces Clay Harvison (9-3; 1-1 UFC). This is the sixth of nine preliminary fights on the card. Neither man is currently ranked in the Welterweight USA Today/BE Consensus Rankings. The prelims will be streamed online at FoxSports.com and Facebook starting at 4:45 p.m. ET.
This fight is a battle between two Ultimate FIghter alum. Johnson was a member of Dan Henderson's team on the US vs. UK season, making it to the Welterweight finals. There, he was defeated by James Wilks. Harvison was a member of Brock Lesnar's team, and lost in the quarter-finals to eventual finalist Ramsey Nijem. This fight is a do-over of sorts, as these two were originally set to meet at the Jake Shields vs. Jake Ellenberger Fight Night in September. Johnson had to pull out of that fight due to injury, and Harvison was submitted by replacement Seth Baczynski.
How do these two stack up?
Johnson: 29 years old | 6'1" | 75" reach
Harvison: 31 years old | 6'1" | 73" reach
What have these two done recently?
Johnson: L - Amir Sadollah (TKO) | W - Mike Guymon (Sub) | L - Matt Riddle (TKO)
Harvison: L - Seth Baczynski (Sub) | W - Justin Edwards (SD) | W - Aric Nelson (TKO)
How did these two get here?
Johnson fought in a number of small shows, primarily in Utah, and put together a 9-6 record before being signed to The Ultimate Fighter. After losing in the finals, he started to amass a decent UFC record, winning his next 2 fights and earning bonuses for each. But he's 1-2 in his last three and doesn't seem long for the UFC. Johnson has fared well against mainly no name fighters, but has struggled every time he has stepped up the level of opponent. He could easily be cut if he loses here.
Harvison also came up through the small regional scene, fighting on shows with colorful names like "Wild Bill's Fight Night." He won his first UFC bout - a split decision against Justin Edwards, before losing to Baczynski. At 31 years of age, he's a bit older than most fighters at this early stage of their career, and if he has hopes of making a name for himself, it has to begin now. A loss here would be his second in a row, and like Johnson, could result in his leaving the UFC.
Why should you care?
Johnson tends to finish lower-tier guys, and he often does in with a highlight finish, so look for that here. It's also one of those potential "loser leaves town" fight, which adds a bit of drama. But honestly, this is not the most compelling fight in the world.
