Forrest Griffin Apologizes for Twitter Rape Joke, Donates to Rape Crisis Center

via Zuffa LLC/Getty Images

Forrest Griffin tweeting out a joke about rape became a big story given the timing of the UFC's Fox debut. The story of his tweet was picked up by major online media sources and it led to a questioning of the UFC's embrace of Twitter and associated reward system while refusing to hold fighters accountable for harmful tweets.

Forrest has now apologized to a local rape crisis center whose executive director said "The entire comment was disgusting and insensitive." Las Vegas ABC affiliate KTNV has Griffin's apology:

"I like to cause trouble, I like to stir the pot and I like to make a mess of things, but I really do not want to be mean or malicious to anyone. I feel bad, I want to apologize, I feel like a should be punished a little bit. Maybe other professional athletes or just guys in locker rooms can kind of be more sensitive towards the topic of rape. Once you take the comments in the light of day you feel disgusted by it, but at the time you don't think."

The story also said that Forrest made a donation to the center.

This is a positive step in at least admitting that the tweet was ill advised.

The issue for me has never been one of "does Forrest Griffin endorse rape?" or anything so absurd. It's that, as stated earlier, Twitter is a public forum and one that the UFC has embraced in a way that forces athletes who can be rewarded to also be held accountable. It's important to the UFC's image as a legitimate major sport and it's also just decent behavior.

Forrest was a police officer, I'm sure he has seen the impact of rape on human lives in person and I doubt that his intent was ever malicious, but it also contributes to fostering a certain environment in the sport.

The absolutely vile e-mails and comments that were sent my way for running articles about the tweet (including one e-mail wishing that I had a daughter who was gang-raped in front of me) or the disgusting comments on Maggie Hendricks of Yahoo's article on the situation (many of which wished rape on her as well) and even comments on articles saying that the author "sounds like a woman" all are a part of establishing a very specific type of culture.

Trust me, I'm a big boy, I can take any number of awful things being said to me, but there is a larger thing at play. When we then have fans and fighters making light of something like rape and making sure that it's understood that somehow having a moral objection to such is somehow feminine, it adds to this culture and feeds the beast.

That is what has to change in the culture of MMA if it's ever going to be seen as more than a hyper-macho niche sport.

Some people are really awful “humans”.

The more I thought about this the more i got hung up on the idea that Forrest got paid to tweet. So, in effect, they paid him for rape commentary which he is clearly not fit to do. When the UFC pays him to use twitter it becomes the UFC endorsement and liability. That’s the big issue, at least for me.

It’s really good he realized he needed to do something and I think his comment about “deserving to be punished” tells a lot about who he is as a person.

1. Anderson Silva is waiting for you to punch him.
2. That guy is Anderson Silva.
3. Don't fucking punch that guy.

I wonder if Leno and Letterman got e-mails like that

…after they made jokes about Michael Jackson raping little boys. I doubt it. Because people are used to laughing off what they say.

Forest was trying to make a witty comment. It seems like a few people missed that, and then once a few start judging everyone else jumps on the bandwagon and start a wave of people who, although they laugh in some contexts, decide to use the speaker this time to make themselves feel better. It’s actually a pretty evil thing to do. I feel sorry for Forest, and I’m not surprised at the evil e-mails he’s been getting. It takes an evil person to judge him so hypocritically.

You made the same redundant argument in previous threads

And in your round about way, you’re trying to implicate writers like Hendricks and Brookhouse and anyone that agrees with them as ‘evil people’ for daring to call Griffin on this crap.

BE doesn’t need apologists trying to sugarcoat an incredibly serious issue like rape by somehow attempting to turn anyone that voices their concern into the villain.

Adios, amigo.

I always flinch a bit when someone says: “so and so is going to rape him in the cage”

Not sure if it’s different than saying he’s going to kill him, but it just is…to me. It’s incredibly insensitive, and if they knew how rape changes someone’s life, they wouldn’t use the word so flippantly.
I’m glad Forrest came to his senses, it’s too bad that he hadn’t knows how stupid it is to make light of it before, but hey, we all have to learn, some the hard way.

And I’m not saying that to be some kind of dick either. And they know me and how I am. We all just deal with things differently. If it were in your job to read criminal files and stuff and you read stories about guys molesting infants and how a mother walked in on your 11 year old son butt-naked webcaming with his stepfather who had him shoving dildos in his anus and all other kinds of stuff like that… you’d become kinda desensitized.

that is until I read the comments left by those defending Forrest on Brent’s original article detailing and criticizing the tweets. It really does make me wonder about the average IQ of my fellow fans after seeing some of their responses.

Granted, I’m a little older than the stated average fan (50), but it doesn’t give me a lot of hope about the future of this sport when so many seem to fall into the very stereotypes that MMA’s biggest critics mention.

Kudos Brent for sticking by your values and reporting the issue when other popular fansites chose to ignore the issue.

precisely because of this whole alpha-male, caveman attitude/culture that surrounds most sports. I used to play minor hockey, and even back then, you had this ridiculous culture where the adults were worse than the kids even. Egging them on, etc. The amount of racism and homophobia on display back then was insane. And now, going to sporting events, you always get those obnoxious douchebags that sit next to you, hammered before the event even starts, and they can’t hold their alcohol. Rape really isn't something anybody should joke about!

That said, everyone says things they shouldn’t and I would chuck this up as one of those times. I’m sure Forrest didn’t mean to to hurt/offend anyone with his tweet. In addition, the whole thing got blown out of proportion because he had tens of thousands of followers and is a public persona. He apologized and now it’s time for all of us to move on.

I agree however I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone on this site that truly condones sexual violence against women. If anything, you would probably find people that would step up to protect women without thinking twice. I don’t think Forrest’s tweet had anything to do with advocating rape or sexual violence against women. It was an ignorant post from somebody who didn’t think prior to tweeting. Everybody has stuck their foot in their mouth—this was a prime example which unfortunately was read by thousands of people.

by Fedornuthugger on Nov 11, 2011 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. To me, the entire episode is less about what Forrest did and more about people’s responses to the incident. So many people on these blogs were responding via their rape culture conditioning. If, because of this incident, just one person on all the various MMA forums became more aware of their own misogynistic training, then it was a success.

I’m offended. I guess I’ve never really found rape a suitable topic for humor. Now, though, I’m married to a rape victim, so the hurt is a little closer to home these days.

The thing is, lots of topics are no longer considered funny that used to be fodder for jokes. Social mores change over time, and we are now in the period of time when rape as a suitable topic for a joke is dying. Some people have already made the shift; some have not. Of those that are still to change, some will come to see that empathy trumps a quick laugh. Others will simply die thinking the way they currently do. Either way, society evolves.

What the media pays attention to for a week or so to generate ratings and then they forget that these things happen once some other news worthy event takes its place. Just a bunch of leeches. No one cares once its out of the news cycle.

You know what? you bitch whenever we run anything. Down to bitching that we WERE covering the Forrest situation and now bitching if we STOP covering it. You’re a worthless member of the community and I have no patience left for you. So. you’re banned.

If we are all going to be truly honest with ourselves, let’s admit that amongst our closest friends / family we all say or joke about things that are politically incorrect. I’m pretty sure that in locker rooms (both men’s and women’s) and bars across the country people are not just talking about the weather. Topics such as homosexuality, rape, violence, abortion and sex probably come up all the time, and are probably not discussed in a civilized manner. Does that make us bad people? I don’t think so. Who doesn’t look forward to good times and “off-hand” jokes amongst their closest friends?

In this current world of social media and instantaneous information, you have to know that a comment like Forrest’s would be unacceptable. Facebook and Twitter may be great tools for social networking and making so called “friends”, but you can’t truly be yourself with it and you are not really among 175,000 “friends”.

With the UFC going on network television tomorrow, things will likely get crazier for many of the popular UFC fighters. Welcome to celebrity-status, where your every statement and Tweet made will be scutinized by the media, who are just waiting for you to screw up.

In the end, all your friends and family let you down and you die in your own arms, so who cares?

In what regard specifically?

by Fedornuthugger on Nov 11, 2011 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

I Totally Disagreed with Brent's Point of View...

But I’d like to think I disagreed respectfully and intelligently. That “daughter gang rape” is really twisted.

I’ll be the first to admit that I have an extremely dark and cruel sense of humor, hence why the initial “joke” didn’t bother me in the least. But reading that someone emailed that comment to Brent made my skin crawl.

The Yahoo comments I read weren’t as bad as you make it seem, though, unless the really severe ones were deleted. Most that I saw disagreed were more sarcastic and clever. I had a really good laugh at a few, particularly the clown one. Hendricks is still a sycophant, though, who just salivates over a somewhat salacious story such as this. She’s an embarrassment to her profession.

by Steve W on Nov 11, 2011 4:21 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I've spent time in the Yahoo comments (reading not actually commenting) before BE

And they get pretty bad, I imagine some of the worst ones were probably hiddden.

I also understand, that some people (including myself) enjoy off-color humor and so wouldn’t be personally offended by the comment. However, I think anyone can recognize the difference between making an inappropriate joke in front of a controlled environment is much different than one of the most recognizable UFC fighters making the same joke on a very public forum.

Total Non-story.

Mma bloggers trying hard to connect to the Penn state scandal for headlines.

When are we, as fans, going to grow up and realize the stupid things mma fighters do, in general, are small potatoes to what goes on in bigger sports like boxing? Most of the HW champs in boxing did a few years in prison for serious crimes and were still wildly popular… yet we cry about missed press conferences and offensive twitter remarks.

Grow up and put on your big boy pants. UFC is on FOX now and there is no excuse to claim the sky is falling every time an MMA fighter does something stupid.

Grow up and learn some logic.

Popularity of HW boxing champs who served time =/= appropriateness of criticizing MMA fighters for inappropriate comments or missing press conferences.

I think you’re trying to point out a hypocritical contradiction, but I’m not positive because your argument is such garbage it’s hard to follow from premise to conclusion.

And this is amazing:

UFC is on FOX now and there is no excuse to claim the sky is falling every time an MMA fighter does something stupid.

So now that the UFC is on network television, brass and fans should be less concerned with how fighters behave? Holy shit. That’s one for the ages.

Hi Brent,

Just wanted to say I was sorry to hear about some of the hideous and vile things that were sent your way following your excellent piece which helped highlight this problem in the first place.
There’s no accounting for hate, its a leech on lucid, insightful positivity and I just hope that those people so absorbed in a spiral of utter depravity have the opportunity to clear out the moronic cellar of their minds and find a better way to be.
Keep up the good work, I admire your tenacity and intent towards thorough, clear and well researched argument and point of view- – it is actually a breath of fresh air to have someone who writes with little or no ambiguity on topics which can illicit such an insane response from those enfeebled by their own mire.

Thanks again.
