Earlier today on mmafighting.com, Ariel Helwani was seen in a video interviewing a select few people in the street of Hollywood to gauge the knowledge of the UFC's impending fight on FOX and MMA in general. There were some unsurprising results. Here is the video:
To say the least, this is really an unsurprising reminder into how the sport is still a niche competition compared to the NFL, NBA. MLB, etc. There is some upside to this harsh reminder, however. You see that the sport is still acknowledged and noticeable outside of the fighting world by those who are regular viewers of ESPN. You can also see that there is one person who seems to immediately recognize what Helwani is here for. One woman actually gives a pretty apt analysis of Cain Velasquez's skill set and attributes. The fact that people recognize the acronym of MMA is a pretty startling thing in my book as well.
The really upsetting part is the casual fans. I usually give casuals a bit too much credit in assuming they could name most of the UFC champions and some relevant names in the sport. The majority of these people had no idea that the UFC was even on FOX this weekend. Some were completely oblivious to the sport at all and made fools of themselves trying to attach any sort of knowledge to it. Even if they did, they seemed to be more excited for the Pacquiao-Marquez III bout. That is sure to squash the notion that boxing is a sport on life support and how much bigger the UFC brand name is than the sport of boxing.
Finally, around the 4:40 mark, we seem to have finally found our famous Bloody Elbow stalwart psychoblack. This is my personal highlight of the entire segment.
