UFC 136 Results: Frankie Edgar Stops Gray Maynard In Four
Gray Maynard outwrestled Frankie Edgar the first time the met. The second bout saw Maynard dominate the first round with powerful strikes before a great comeback by Edgar in a bout that ended up a draw. At UFC 136 the two men met in a third fight with the winner walking away with the UFC lightweight championship.
The fight started off almost exactly like the first round of their previous meeting. Maynard landed some big punches that dropped Edgar and seemed to have him on the verge of being stopped multiple times. Maynard was unable to close the deal and Edgar managed to battle back over the next few rounds.
Edgar came back with speed and never really let Maynard get on track after the first round. Maynard couldn't ever really get his offense back on track as the fight wore on.
In the fourth round Edgar managed to land a series of right hands that rocked and eventually dropped Maynard. Edgar flurried with left hands on the ground and forced the stoppage.
Maynard appeared to be attempting to protest the stoppage but it was completely justified as he was badly hurt and not defending.
Frankie Edgar now holds the win he wanted over Gray Maynard and can move forward with his career.

I’m a big Maynard fan, and certainly didn’t want him to get knocked out, but fuck.. that was a helluva performance. Gotta give it to Frank

Amazing display and recovery in the first
I never expected him to get the finish. He for real made a fan of me with this fight

In both of the last two fights.
That’s what I’m saying — his fight IQ is like 0.

Frankie was seriously on queer street and Gray was swinging for the fences, so I get that. But it’s another thing not to learn from that mistake

Exactly.
It’s crazy — he could have won the title in either fight just by going for the choke.

Maynard doesn't deserve another crack
His shocking inability to finish fights rears its ugly head.
A 4th fight he’d do the exact same thing.
I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.
Bullshit,
Gray could make the adjustments needed. I bet Maynard’s back in the title picture after 1 or 2 solid rebound wins.

I don’t doubt his talent at all, especially considering how highly a lot of people on here rate him. That’s just the only fight I’ve seen. And IMO, the SF Title isn’t equal to the UFC and I’d like to see one of these guys in the UFC who’ve worked for the title get the shot first to move the division along.

Obviously the SF title isn't the same as the UFC
But my opinion is he’s as good as anybody. I’d like to see his first fight in the UFC be against Crazy Joe.

And like I said, I just think he should get a contender fight before fighting directly for the title. Thought the same about shields and Hendo

My bad. You get it though. I think it’s a good contender fight. Step up for everybody, and if everything goes to plan Gil wins an entertaining fight running into his title shot after Bendo/Guida (probably Bendo I think.)
Read: Toblerone Jones
That'd be a good fight
The only thing I don’t like about J-Lau is he’s a serious front runner, and doesn’t succeed often later in a fight. That’s gonna hurt him at the top of the division. But since most of the top contenders have fallen back (g-sot, miller, guillard) it’d be a good fight for next contender after Bendo/Guida. And I agree with you on that prediction.

How depressing to be Maynard right now.
Maynard can’t box for shit, it seems, when he’s unable to take you down. Dood’s gotta take that into consideration and either get himself a new boxing coach or train more boxing.
The Internets: Where there are no girls and men become children.
Because Maynard lost to the UFC champion and is now 1-1-1 against him, he can’t box for shit? Edgar is fast as hell and is a great striker. So many people refuse to give Edgar any credit, it is amazing.

But maynard constantly leading with wild uppercuts and overhand rights shows he has no iea what he’s doing out there on his feet. Maybe he got excited after hurting FE in the 1st, but man, that’s just piss poor boxing.
FE figured him out and maynard didn’t do a damn thing after that.

You can't have it both ways
It’s always strange to hear a fighter’s skillset criticized after a title fight. “Fighter B sucks”… ok, well what’s that make the champion then? A can crusher? He was facing the #1 lightweight in the world, and did so, over 65 minutes of fighting a majority of which was on the feet. Frankie got absolutely leveled TWICE in two fights by “piss poor boxing” and it took him 65 minutes and 3 fights to put him away.
You can’t have it both ways. Either Edgar is an incredible champion who beat a dangerous and worthy opponent, or he got hammered by a guy with shitty boxing who kept it competitive over 13 rounds and 65 minutes before finally putting him away.

If Maynard "can't box for shit"
Where does that leave Edgar? A guy who got the holy hell beat out of him in two different fights by a guy who “can’t box for shit?” Either Maynard is a worthy opponent on the feet and Edgar is an incredible champion, or it took him 3 fights and 65 minutes where he was badly battered and beaten to put away a guy who can’t box for shit. You can’t have it both ways.

I said it in the live thread and I'll say it here.
Edgar’s footwork is the best I’ve seen in MMA, if it wasn’t for the footwork he wouldn’t be champion.
Every fighter has their strengths. if Edgar wasn’t such a good wrestler he wouldn’t be champion, if he didn’t have killer cardio he wouldn’t, if he didn’t have a great mix of takedowns and strikes. He is a total package as a fighter. He has great wrestling, crisp striking and great movement. He is a slow starter though and it almost cost him the fight again.
"He's got a great package... and an unusual one!" Joe Rogan (of Lyoto Machida)

That footwork made Maynard really have to chase Edgar from the second round onward. Maynard would try to counter, but Frankie just wasn’t there. I think that footwork and versatility in attacks just made it hard for Maynard to get a takedown and get any more flush strikes in.
Check out the C&D Channel on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/user/Gobusiness123 for MMA reviews, predictions, analysis, and other MMA related content.
Edgar might be my favorite champion. Everyone else seems like they are genetically superior to everyone else the in the division. Edgar is Rocky and wins from sheer willpower.
"an excellent example of why most MMA "journalism" is a joke. Pseudonyms like "toxic" and shitty writing like that dopey article"--- Joe Rogan.
Maynard is a bad finisher
He’s really bad. And it continues to cost him. Edgar has lots of heart and guts but Maynard should’ve just taken his back and flattened him out.
Maynard and Pat Barry probably hang out and exchange hilarious ways to not finish off their clearly hurt opposition.
I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

But Maynard is ridiculous. Actually now I thank him for being such a terrible finisher and giving us two epic fights. Remember when he used to be boring?

You do realize that Maynard is 10-1-1 right? “continues to cost him” seems a bit over the top. He has lost once in his entire career and that was to the UFC champ. Edgar is obviously very hard to finish, Maynard clocked him really hard repeatedly in both fights and Edgar just recovers fast. Some fighters have that gift.

truly displayed what it means to have the heart of a champion. What an amazing 2 championship fights those 2 gave us. I feel bad for Gray even though i dislike him, however I’m fuckin thrilled Frankie pulled that off, and even finished the fight. Amazing, i’m still hype.

I hate Edgar wanted Maynard to win
But it makes me so mad guys let Edgar dictate the fight. They fall into his point fighting scheme so I changed mid fight and was like if gray is gonna flat foot his way around the cage and not engage and let Frankie point fight him and not brawl like he needs to do then hope he loses. I got my wish.

That’s a good point regarding Frankie lulling guys into his style of fight. He did it to BJ and now to Gray.
"This is the best BJ we have seen in a long time" - Joe Rogan
"It was just such a glorious moment for me" - Jon Jones
I don't understand it
I think if people just go at him brawl him make it dirty Frankie will lose. But they keep doing the same damn think stand there let Edgar move in and out and point fight. Fortunatly tonight he finished thank god I didn’t wanna see another round of that. It annoyed me when gray wouldn’t do shit. His corner wouldn’t light a fire under his ass and give him any urgency. I think if gray made it dirty he wouldve won. I think he should of went for a sub round 1 when Edgar pulled a Leo.

once Frankie settles like that your screwed
He’s elusive as hell, Gray tried in the 3rd round to start swinging again and was catching nothing but air. If you get momentum on Frankie, you have to stay on him, Gray taking off that second round was a huge mistake and he payed for it dearly.
Frankie’s tough as nails though, can’t believe he wasn’t finished in the 1st, and Gray did everything he could in that round i feel, though he may have been smart to try and get a sub on Frankie towards the end of the 1st instead of going for more punches. Hard to say at this point, but huge props to Frankie!
gotta give frankie edgar props. I was rooting for maynard in this and the last fight but frankie made me a fan for life and that was well worth the $55 pay per view, this is why I love MMA

I thought he did well, Aldo had him on his bicycle for the first minute or so. And Kenny’s cage work neutralized that aggression. Florians striking just wasn’t sharp enough to capitalize on it.l

You could almost see the redness through Florian's black shorts.
Florian’s “offense” was clinching against the cage.
If Florian was making him worry about performing leg kicks imagine what a high calibar wrestler would have been doing to Aldo’s game. Yes he beat him, but Aldo has lost some of his appeal to me

But I think Melendez brutally KOs him if they ever fight.

To me, it looks like both Penn and Maynard hit harder than Melendez.
Think the only guy who could KO him, at this point, would be Alvarez. But I don’t see Alvarez coming to the UFC for a while. And Melvin is now out of the title picture…
Frankly, I think Edgar just takes Melendez down repeatedly.

I don't think Maynard hits harder than Melendez
He hasn’t finished anybody since Joe Veres four years ago. Hasn’t come close until the second Edgar fight.
I think he hits harder, but Melendez hits hard in bunches.
Gray has more one shot power while Melendez will knock your head off with a flurry.

The LW division is deep and super competitive

Even if one of them lost 3 times the UFC wouldn't cut 'em. It'd take 4 or 5 straight losses (and bad ones at that).
Melvin is 11-5 in the UFC and Gray is 8-1-1. Think both of them have quite a bit of leeway.

155 is the true shark tank. There are a number of legitimate contenders. Maynard HAS to fight someone legit. There’s no reason to feed him someone at this point. Let’s see if he can hang with Melvin’s power or if he can smother Melvin with top control.
Shit, Melvin’s balance is insane. I think that’s a great fight to make.
