UFC 136 Results: Chael Sonnen Challenges Anderson Silva After Dominating Brian Stann
Chael Sonnen pushed Anderson Silva to the absolute limits in his last time in the Octagon. At UFC 136 he made his return and faced Brian Stann, a man on a mission for a middleweight title shot of his own.
Sonnen looked in form in the first round, getting an early takedown and dominating on the ground. He worked from back control, mount and inside the guard, landing punches and elbows while never finding himself in any danger. It was total domination.
Unfortunately for Stann, it didn't get any better in the second round as Sonnen quickly took him down and resumed his dominance. Despite a horrific stand up when both men were working, Sonnen scored another takedown and locked up an arm triangle and forced the submission.
Sonnen looked like he hadn't lost a thing in the cage and on the mic he was no different.
Sonnen challenged Anderson Silva in the ring saying "Anderson Silva, you absolutely suck" and challenging him to a fight on Super Bowl weekend. Sonnen said that he wanted to "Up the stakes" saying that if he wins Silva needs to leave the middleweight division, and if Silva wins he (Chael) will retire from the UFC.

What is this?
The WWE? Still riding Team Silva though..
That was awesome
I hope Silvia toys with him and sets a new record for most knockdowns in a single fight.

Did you think “the roids” were where all of sonnens skill came from like all the silva fanboys did, or you just thought stann was better than that? He took a solid right hands from stann, and im sure stann hits much harder than silva. Silva should be worried.

No he shouldn't
I’m no fanboy, sig be damned, but Chael will lose more miserably than the first time.

CHAELS PRETTY GOOD
ANDERSONS THE BEST ANDERSON 1ST ROUND KO SPECTACULAR
Seriously?
Stann got outwrestled by an Olympic caliber wrestler. The same way Anderson Silva, Yushin Okami, Nate Marquadt and Dan Miller did. Give me a break.

To be fair though...
…none of those guys got buttraped like Stann just did. Dominated and ground down maybe, but not utterly destroyed like that

Or maybe Sonnen's that much better since he fought those guys
He’s been off for 14 months and he switched to a new gym… and now he’s showing a more dynamic grappling game (in terms of advancing positions and setting up subs)

Leben was sick.
But that doesn’t take anything away from Stann. He was outwrestled by the best wrestler in the division. No shame in that. Hopefully he’ll learn from it and come back better.

As a devout Sonnennite, Christmas has come early.
I haven’t had that big of an orgasm in quite some time. Amazing. I didn’t think anything could top Lauzon picking off Guillard, but Chael fucking DELIVERS.

if he wins Silva needs to leave the middleweight division, and if Silva wins he (Chael) will retire from the UFC.
I am against this because that means we won’t get Silva vs Sonnen 3 after Chael wins.

If Sonnen loses, he can just come back, fight under a mask and change his name to “El Sonnen”. He cuts pro wrestling promos with pro wrestling stipulations, so why not go the whole nine yards and copy the pro wrestling storyline? We’ll see Silva vs a masked Chael in late 2012. Sonnen will win and then unmask in the post fight interview.

Agreed. except
his name would be Sonnen Trollando

Pretty sure it wasnt chael who was talking retirement. I’m almost positive it was that damn Hispanic guy who keeps following him around.
by alibabba on Oct 8, 2011 10:33 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Forgot to mention
that Chael is lying. This is the UFC, not some wrestling promotion. That kinda stipulation is far fetched.
Even if there's no way to officially enforce it
I think Chael would be a man of his word and walk away.

I dunno
I have my reasons to believe he may leave the UFC and even MMA.

Yeah if he loses twice to Andy he's gonna retire.
I don’t think Chaels ego could survive.

It's called entertainment!
You really think Chael believes they are going to put stipulations in the fight contract? It’s just promoting the fight and WWE is AWESOME!!!!
" Its like when I'm right I'm right, when I'm wrong I coulda been right, so I'm still right cause I coulda been wrong, you know, and I'm sorry cause I could be wrong right now, I could be wrong, but I'm right..." Bama
Not really far fetched.
Chael only has to retire ufc can’t stop him. Andy has already fought at 205 don’t c y Dana would stop him.

Not sure, i think hes allowed to be within certain ranges that are considered normal, and when he got in trouble they were eleveated, but like kj said it was in texas so who knows.
Hope he does not piss hot this time
I really wanna see him fight silva again…. Soon
Also, i cheer for the team that is the most traditional rival to the team that sponsors silva… This week chael said he supported my team too!!! Just to f*ck it up with silva a bit more… I instantly became a fan…
Go palmeiras, go sonnen!

After this performance from Sonnen, I'm actually worried for Anderson
This was a very good performance for Sonnen, and I just think that stylistically, it would be tough for Anderson to deal with. I just think that Anderson will probably have to fight from his back against Sonnen if/when they fight again. I’m picking Anderson to win, but Chael won’t allow Anderson to get that timing down in the first round and allow Anderson to gauge his opponent, and I think that Chael is just going to go straight at Anderson once the bell rings.

i dont really like chael sonnen but
does anderson have an answer (except for a 5th round triangle/armbar) for that crazy GNP?? the way sonnen closes the distance and crowds his opponent and keeps that insane pace is impressive. I must say he has the blueprint to dethrone silva. HOWEVER, as far as Sonnen saying he’s the “true” 185 champ, and to anyone else who feels the same way or believes the the win is cheapened: when you think about it, the referee could have let anderson completely sever off the bloodflow to chael’s brain, or could have let his arm be snapped in half. who cares how many punches sonnen landed, he didnt put anderson to sleep and he didnt make him quit. chael tapped because if he waited any longer he would have been decapitated. bottom line. chael is a crazy person, but could be champ soon. i hope not
You're not going to get an argument here that Silva won
Of course the ref saved Sonnen from 10x more damage than his 300 punches did to Silva. Sonnen is just being himself in ignoring that simple fact with his outlandish statements.
The flip side to that, however, is that Silva was saved by rules, the cage, etc. If you get in dominant position like that on the street, it’s much easier to eye-gouge, fish hook, manipulate digits, bang someone’s head against concrete, knee the head (now that Sonnen learned to pass guard), etc. That’s why I don’t feel like wrestling is overweighted in MMA. Dominant positions are labelled as such for a reason.
Sonnen’s proven ability to get in such position repeatedly against Silva may or may not give him an iota of credibility when he calls himself the #1 MW, but it does tell us that a competitive title match likely awaits.

Sonnen and Fitch
Would be the biggest killing machines in MMA if knees to the head were legal.
by The so-called Beautiful on Oct 9, 2011 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions
i get what you’re saying but
fighters get “saved” by rules all the time, whether it be the cage, or point deduction, or the bell. a fighter that has a choke sunk in but has to let go because of the bell has no right to dwell on that moment and consider himself the better fighter if not for the bell. In the same way, it’s crazy to me to say “i had a dominant position so i would have won if knees to the head and eye gouging were legal.” Sure, some rules save fighters from taking a street-fight style beating (eye-gouge, fish hook, manipulated digits, etc) but being “saved” by those rules doesn’t directly determine fights. However, getting saved by the referee does directly determine a fight. thats all i’m saying—you can get “saved” by the rules and consider yourself the #1, but you cant get saved by the Referee and consider yourself the #1.
but……i agree that the rematch being competitive, and agreed that wrestling is not overrated, it’s probably underrated
by optimuspr1me6 on Oct 9, 2011 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Yup, that’s why I used the word ‘iota’. 99% of people know Silva is #1, myself included, but he thinks he kicked Silva’s ass already, could easily do it again, and is therefore the best MW fighter.
by paythefighters on Oct 10, 2011 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Although I absolutely hate him as a person, I was amazed at how good Chael is.
In my opinion he is the best grappler in the entire organization currently, and proved it tonight. There’s great wrestling, and then there’s wrestling that completely eliminates all hope- and that is Chael Sonnens wrestling. There is one man in the world who can beat him though- no matter what any joyous, optimistic Sonnen fan boy may postulate- being Anderson Silva. A rematch does need to occur.
I think GSP is a harder matchup for Chael
His speed, style, and balance make him almost impossible to take down, and Chael can’t win without that. That’s why he has such a high opinion of Okami, despite Okami being tooled by Silva.
Of course Silva can do far more damage during the takedown attempts, but we have yet to see that being a problem for Sonnen. In his mind, beating Silva is simple: Do the same thing as last time, but avoid doing something stupid like leaning back in Silva’s guard and letting him get wrist control. I don’t think he knows how to beat GSP except just hoping that his takedown ability is better than that of Koscheck, Fitch, Hughes, and Shields.
