But Jones just fought on September 24th, this isn’t even 3 months since that

Realistically

~3 months between bouts is all a fighter should need, so long as they aren’t injured. A week or so for rest, a few weeks to correct old errors and build up their body with heavy core lifts, and then you start a 6-8 week camp.

Yeah I was thinking 3-4 weeks to rest and chill out with the fam and then a 6-8 week/8-10 week training camp minus injuries of course

by SentientAndroid on Oct 6, 2011 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

3 weeks rest might be a bit much,

I mean, a week of just straight chillin, a week of just lightly working on technique, and then some heavy lifting heading into training camp. What heavy core lifts do are help strengthen the tendons, making injury less likely.

Xtreme Couture- The best never rest! The girl in my av is Kari Sweets (you're welcome).

by ElliotMatheny on Oct 6, 2011 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I was just thinking that they’d want a good bit of time to be away from the gym and training for a month or so before they got right back into it for 2-3 months straight. 2+ months training and then one week off followed by 2+ months training and one week off etc. just seems like you’d be spending too much time with your mind constantly focused on “the fight game”. But it’s their job, so there’s that.

Anderson Silva, Edson Barboza, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, Thiago Alves = Muay Thai wrecking machines!

Yeah,

I think it’s important for fighters to get back into the gym, at least in a learning capacity, ASAP. Even if they won their last fight, there are always things that can be improved on, new things to learn, etc.

It's the fight game

To add to what you’re saying, UFC 140 needed a main event, and this was available. Seeing the injuries that happened that mess up main events and whatnot, I think that sometimes (not all the time) it’s best to put fights forward when they are available. Rashad Evans is not available, but Machida is. Let’s just say that they wait for the Evans vs Jones fight, but one of them gets injured, then the wait will be that much longer for the fans and those two fighters. The only drawback is if Jones loses to Machida, then the huge money fight of Jones vs Evans for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title will have lost its luster.

You are 100% right

You’ve covered every angle, it makes sense, I am just shocked that they took Rashad’s title shot away from him again. His injury isn’t so terrible that he will be out for a very extended period, they could have delayed this fight for maybe 2 months. Having Jones fight for the title in less than 3 months after his last fight has to be some of the fastest turnaround for a title ever.

Basically what this situation says is

UFC 140 needing a main event > Rashad deserving his title shot

But I have to agree with you this time World – this is a great fight, Evans is injured and can’t even start training for another 3 weeks. It gives 140 a great main event. Without resorting to insulting anyone, I think that the best thing to do is to enjoy this fight and let the Jones / Evans fight happen when Evans has had time to reach 100% for fighting the most difficult opponent he’s ever had.

I stand somewhat corrected

Link doesn’t work for me, but I found it (guess I missed that one in real time).

Looking closer, Anderson has consistently fought 3 times over a moving 12 month basis (actually, from the time of any of his UFC fights, he has fought 2 more times over the next 12 months the entire time, save the Okami fight which missed by 20 days).

GSP did it up until he fought Alves, BJ did it some, albeit over 2 weight classes.

Another reason why Anderson stands atop the MMA world. I don’t care how explosive Jones’ elbows are. He has a long way to go to match the Spider in my book.

Yeah he still has a ways to go to match Andy, but Andy is 12 years older than Bones and is getting closer to retiring every day. He’ll be 37 next year :O has there ever been a dominant fighter at that age? Who knows, Bones could go on an impressive 20 fight win streak over the next 8 years rematching Lyoto and Shogun twice each, smash Gustafson and Davis, and completely demolish Gegard, Mo and Hendo, or he could get Serra’d by Kingsbury 2 years from now…

We can't have it both ways...

Either Couture is a legend in the sport and was a legit HW/LHW champion, or he isn’t.

If we hold that Couture was such a legend, than surly finishing him off in such spectacular fashion should = a title shot.

Especially if the finish is surly.

Joking aside, I think you’re right that this is borderline – Machida is the second-best scenario in this case, although I think he (in prime form) represents the best likely scenario for a win.

Ask Faber, or Kenny Florian.

by Canis.Majoris on Oct 6, 2011 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't remember saying it never happens

I said there’s very few instance where it makes sense. Florian is a good one tho. Aldo needs the exposure. Faber….well, they just want a non-Cruz BW champ and aren’t doing much to hide that.

In this case, I think it makes more sense to wait for Rashad to heal, since he’s been the number 1 contender for a long ass time now and getting Machida another win solidifies his position as a contender.

I disagree. What makes more sense than waiting (forever) for Evans is for the UFC to make Jones fight as frequently as possible to make money. That’s what makes sense.

by Shnak on Oct 6, 2011 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Evans isn't on the shelf for 6 months or a year like Rua was

If that were the case I’d totally agree with you. Jones is only taking 11 weeks of between fights. That’s a very quick turn around for a champ. There’s no reason they couldn’t wait for Rashad, other than to appease Hashmo.

I’m not against an active champion by any means, but that doesn’t make this move make sense.

besides appeasing hashmo there’s also appeasing the people that want to see the best fighters in the world fight, and making money, and letting the best fighters in the world fight, and about a million other reasons, but we should probably ignore all those to appease rashad.

Listen

I’ve already said I like the match stylistically. Machida is an elite LHW and I’m not saying otherwise. But it is ridiculous to act like the matchmaking is par for the course in any way. When was the last time any title was defended twice within 12 weeks?

Rashad is the number one contender. He was the number one contender waiting to fight shogun before he got injured. He was the number one contender after Jones took the belt and before Jones got “injured”. And he was the number one contender after Jones beat Rampage (that’s why they brought him into the octagon to spoil Jones “special night”.

he’s the number 1 contender, and he’s injured, so no one should really care about him.

Also, it’s too late now, but it would be nice if we could put a stop to this 3 weeks bullshit. He can start training in 3 weeks, that doesn’t mean he can take a fight 3 weeks after UFC 140.

Did you miss the part where I said I like the match up???

And I specifically did NOT mention the 3 weeks. I said he’s not out for an extended period of time. An 11 week turn around for a champion is incredibly unusual, you can’t deny that. There’s absolutely no reason they couldn’t have done Jones/Evans under the typical timeline and had it lined up for January or the Super Bowl event.

Bones needs to pay for his extravagant lifestyle, Bentley and all.

Aside from the Bentley joke, I think that he wants to prove himself to everyone. I don’t think that he would want to sit and rest if he was healthy – his ego has likely somehow taken a huge upturn after beating everyone that was a contender. I think that as along as he stays healthy, he’s happy to play the company line and bring in as much cashish as possible. Remember – he is still young. Priorities are different.

The UFC just can’t rely on Evans to be healthy for a fight in 3 months. That’s just a fact supported by Evans’s history over the last couple of years.

The UFC wanted a strong main event for their 2nd show in Toronto, Bones was ready to go, so they looked at the available options for him and Machida was it. Tough luck for Evans, but that’s life.

Right. The 1st round could be scored either way, based on the few leg kicks or based on aggression and not hitting Machida at all. 2nd for Rampage, 3rd for Machida, close fight.

Love Machida and although he in many people minds beat Rampage he lost that fight technically ans shouldn’t get a shot at least not yet …… but he’s the biggest name outside of the always injured Rashad Evans

by Sonnens Political Adviser on Oct 6, 2011 1:55 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It depends on how long Rashad is out. If he takes another fight before Jones and loses that big money fight is lost. If Rashad is out a long time I really hope ring rust doesn’t become a big problem for him.

by IRodC on Oct 6, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Rashad should never take a fight before he fights for the title

there’s nothing to gain, unless he gets another Ortiz fight where you might argue avoiding ring rust is worth the slim chance that he loses the fight. Not many of those matchups out there, maybe Forrest.

Hendo should get it.

Rua and Machida should fight each other for relevance in the division and to establish a decent pecking order. No way that Machida deserves it more than Hendo.

I think Machida is the only guy who has a realistic shot at beating Bones

If he can use his footwork, stay upright, and move in and out of the pocket. Machida can outpoint Jon Jones.

The chances are higher he can do it in a 3 round fight. But it still can be done.

I think Machida has the best chance of beating Jones on the feet, I don’t think he has the best chance of beating Jones in general. Machida has the best tools to deal with the range issue, but I’m not conviced that striking with a guy with Jones’ reach is the smartest path to victory.

i also think that he doesn’t exactly have a mastery over all those unconventional strikes he throws, and as a result he leaves himself wide open when he doesn’t connect or get his opponent to cover up. not saying he’ll win, but a technical fighter with good defense like machida who specializes in counter-attacks is the guy you’d want to exploit this.

by Trust Doesn't Rust on Oct 6, 2011 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

The reason he doesn't jab is that he's found a better substitute

Oh, by all means I still think Jones will win this fight.

I’m just saying that Machida is the toughest match-up for him stylistically.

If we see the old school, vintage Machida that fought Thiago Alves, Tito and Rashad back in 2008. I think he can be very competitive with Bones.

It just comes down to how crisp his footwork, range striking and TDD are on that particular night.

Thiago Silva

Though he would have smashed Thiago Alves just the same.

I was more alluding to the “Machida Era” where he seemed unbeatable in the UFC from that Sokoju fight until he ran up against Shogun.

He looked to be the most dominant LHW in UFC history during an 18 month period.

Jones looks even more dominant over the last 18 months.

He HAS lost a round. To Stephan Bonnar, no less.

He is just making a point, the guy above made an incorrect statement, and skeebop is just correcting him, he isn’t trying to say anything about Jon Jones’ skills, abilities, or evolution as a fighter, so don’t take it as anything other than a correction. The part about losing a round to fucking Stephan Bonnar was made because, well its kind of funny that the champ lost a round to him, even if he isn’t nearly the same fighter he is now.

Machida’s game largely revolves around avoiding the clinch, as he doesn’t allow his opponents to get inside on him and will punish you if you try to force it. But sure, if anybody can do it it’ll be Jones.

by Trust Doesn't Rust on Oct 6, 2011 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Machida is pretty beast in the clinch. Jones couldn’t toss Rampage around. I don’t think that he’ll be able to throw around Machida.

by discoandherpes on Oct 6, 2011 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

He couldn't toss Rampage around in part because Rampage was playing pure defense in the clinch

And even still, he managed to take him down from the clinch and choke him out. A much smaller Machida should probably look to avoid clinching with Jones.

by joker24 on Oct 6, 2011 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Machida needs to ride his bicycle and try to point karate a decision from Bones. Dance in and out of the pocket and try and work kicks against Bones’ legs. That is his path to victory IMHO.

Not that it’s guaranteed, but a win by Bones here would cap off one of the most impressive calender years in mma. He’d have wins over #4 (Machida), #3 (Rampage), #1 (Shogun), and top 10 Bader. The only year I can think of that would compare would be Shogun’s 05 where he beat Rampage, Lil Nog, Overeem and Arona. The years are pretty similar, and not just because they both beat Rampage. Both were their breakout years that featured their first big wins.

I suppose that UFC 140 needed a strong main event, and this is one of the only options available to them. I am a huge fan of Machida, but he hasn’t earned a second Title shot yet. However, I do feel that Machida proves to be an interesting stylistic matchup for Jones.
If you look at it another way, MMA fans wanted Jones to fight Machida and Evans eventually, so now they are getting the fights that they wanted to see. If Machida wins though, the huge money fight of Evans vs Jones for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title loses a lot of luster.

For the record, this is the 5th time Rashad has had a fight moved back

Or cancelled.

Evans vs. Liddell was supposed to happen at UFC 85 and didn’t due to injury on Liddell. Rampage vs. Evans at 107 was pushed back due to TUF and Rampage on The A-Team.

Evans vs. Davis became Evans vs. Ortiz. Evans vs. Shogun obviously became Jones vs. Shogun. Now Jones vs. Evans has become Jones vs. Machida. This part is all just in 2011.

And Rashad is screwed. If Jones loses does anyone really think Evans would stand a chance against Machida a 2nd time?

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

by SSreporters on Oct 6, 2011 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

Jones will win, Rashad will come in the cage. Rashad will get a fight with Bones, only to get injured and get replaced by Chuck Liddell since all LHWs will be tied up and no one but the Iceman will be available. Boom.

rashad basically said: “he’s going to try to get out of fighting me.”

that is arguably what happened. he is going for a very quick turn around and taking a fight against a guy who is lower down on the list instead of waiting a month or two to fight the real #1 challenger.

by Clifford J on Oct 6, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

the guy just bought a Bentley

he better get in the goddamn cage and start fighting people. The champion doesn’t sit on the shelf because the contender is hurt. He fights when he wants and he fights whoever they put in front of him. As long as Jones keeps winning eventually Lucy (Dana White) is going to give Charlie (Rashad) a kick at the ball. There is no point whining about fights getting moved.

We’re basically down to just 1-1.5 months between Rashad being healed and Jones fighting. Unless Jones gets a bad injury, Rashad will barely have to wait at all from the earliest that he’d be ready.

But I think Jones vs. Machida is being done because they need good PPV numbers to make up for their very bad stretch of buyrates from UFC 130-135. Machida has pretty much always drawn well and Bones is going to headline a card that doesn’t suck on paper.

The UFC is actually going to have 16 PPVs compared to 15 last year.

They need to close this year out strong as far as buys goes…they need a rebound. They needed this card to have a stronger main event…they know that unless they set up a big #1 contender match, or at least a top contender match, then they can’t expect a non-title headliner to perform well.

They are trying to give us consistently strong cards.

Don't bitch about a decision unless you have another solution

There is no one else for Jones to fight. He shouldn’t have to sit out 6 months+ waiting for Rashad if he wants to defend his belt sooner. Machida has lost 2 of his last 3, but he is clearly an elite LHW who Bones hasn’t beaten yet, and there simply isn’t any other options. IMO Machida is the one guy at LHW who could challenge Jones.

by alxn on Oct 6, 2011 1:38 PM EDT reply actions

Rashad is only 3 weeks out from returning to training

So it’s not like they couldn’t push Jones next defense back a month or so. That wouldn’t have put Jones on the shelf for longer than what is normal for a defending champ at all and would have made more sense for the division as a whole.

Does three weeks out from returning to training mean that he was only a month behind, or does it mean that, after a substantial time off due to injury, surgery, and recovery, he is finally ready in three weeks to return to training and get back in shape, after which he can begin his training camp for the fight with Jones?

I’m not being sarcastic here, I just don’t think this time line is realistic based on what little knowledge I have. It seems to me that given the huge potential for marketing, the UFC would have made this fight happen if they could have. Jones vs Machida is a nice way of filling in the time without the Evans fight.

by dxwr on Oct 6, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

it may not be only 3 weeks before training camp. But the point still stands that waiting til late Jan or Feb wouldn’t be an unreasonable time between title defenses. At all. In fact, late september to early december is a much more unusual duration between title defenses.

But yeah, the frequency of Jones fights seems to be a bit… well, frequent. I am not complaining about that, and I can’t imagine that Evans didn’t have any input into this (sweet double negatives). Even so, it’s a really nice match even if Evans did get pushed out of the picture again.

Hendo.

Machida should be fighting Rua for relevance and Hendo should be fighting Jones next.

Match was already booked, plus Machida and Rua have already fought twice. And it seems Dana prefers Hendo to challenge for the 185 belt.

booked matches can easily be changed

it’s not official until the contracts are signed or Dana says so, which sucks cause Dana needs to change his mind about this.

I think the UFC likes to have a current UFC fight before most title matches. While Hendo definitely has proven his worth outside of the UFC (and by half killing Bisping), I think he needs to (from a UFC standpoint) show he is worthy by beating a contender before being given the title shot. Otherwise, how could the UFC say that they have the best fighters, when a Strikeforce champion potentially jumps in and wins the UFC title without any recent company fights?

by dxwr on Oct 6, 2011 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I doubt Dan Henderson invites that line of thinking

UFC fans are familiar enough with him to know that he’s not just some Strikeforce champion, he’s fought and proved himself in the UFC before, and was never considered past his time before leaving

Don’t bitch about a decision unless you have another solution

The one thing that could work is to give Evans the option of taking the fight with Jones at UFC 141. He would have an eight week camp before then. If its not enough, then he’ll have to weight until the Super Bowl show most likely, depending on how much damage Machida or Jones take.

If it was enough time, though, you could move Lesnar/Overeem up to be the main event for 140, then have Jones/Evans as the main event for 141.

Machida/Davis (if he’s healed) or Machida/King Mo (if they want to bring him over) could be the co-main. You could even put Rampage/Forrest II on the 141 card for a little more name recognition.

Outside of that, this is the only choice they had to make 140 a PPV-worthy show.

I’m guessing Evans was consulted in one way or another before this decision. I doubt Dana would just completely circumvent him and slide another guy into his spot.

by alxn on Oct 6, 2011 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, agreed. I’m also guessing that’s why there’s nothing coming from Rashad’s camp right away. he probably ends up fighting Phil Davis at the Super Bowl show and the winner of that fights Machida/Jones for the title in Ma or June.

Machida has an unavenged KO victory over the number one contender, has a great record, and will be available to fight in timely fashion.

Not to mention, he’s a better fighter than Rashad and will make this a better fight, and happen sooner rather than later. Rashad will get his chance, and he may even get his rematch with Lyoto for the title. I’m sure he would rather avenge his only loss for the title anyway.

I can certainly understand that the UFC wanted a sure bet and not have to screw up another main event at the last minute. This way, they can have Jones demolish Machida, while Evans heals up, and then make Jones vs Evans for the Superbowl weekend card. Perfect all around.

Last I saw, he would be ready to start training again in three weeks. After time off for an injury, surgery, and recovery. Then back in shape, and a training camp. Shogun vs. Hendo is for the next title shot after Rashad, and if they wait until Jones vs. Evans well into 2012 then the Shogun/Hendo winner would have a long layoff before his shot at the belt.

Why not Davis? He is on a substantial winning streak with his last win over Lil Nog. Machida is coming off two losses and a win with a Karate Kid kick over Couture. He definitely is as much if not more deserving. But, he’s hurt too.

Phil Davis is on a less impressive win streak than Jones himself was when he first got his title shot. If Davis is the best option, I’d rather it go to a former champion such as Machida. Davis needs a win against a upper echelon guy… beating Lil’ Nog shouldn’t give you a title shot these days.

What Batman said. Not to mention Phil Davis makes as much if not more sense than Machida given Machida just lost to the guy who Jones just beat. Once again, he is hurt but I see nothing wrong with the #7 guy getting a shot over the #5 guy especially when the #7 guy has been winning a lot more these days.

Barely edging Lil Nog, a guy who came into that fight on a 2 loss streak (he lost to Brilz, damnit!), is no where near enough to warrant a title shot. Sure, Davis would’ve been a decent last-minute option to fill in for someone and get a title shot that way, but even if Davis was healthy, I would’ve had no problems with the UFC still going with Machida at this point. Machida’s a proven commodity, while Davis needs to continue improving and prove his status by beating a top 5 guy… a Rampage or Shogun, for example.

by Shnak on Oct 7, 2011 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Um, what?

Shogun is on a one fight win streak. He knocked out Forrest :/ and before that he got uber stomped by Jones. Machida is on a one fight win streak. He knocked out Couture :/ but at least his was a bit more impressive plus he has never fought Jones. Davis is most definitely not ready. Hendo is the only one I see who’s over Machida, but that’s about it. I’m banking on Dana to expect Hendo/Shogun, two Pride legends who both own ko victories in their last bout, to do well, at least promotionally anyways.

wow

…. wtf is Dana doing? There is no reason whatsoever for this fight to happen.

Machida getting a title shot after going 1-2 in his last 3 fights? …. with the only win coming over Couture, who’s not even a top 10 lhw.

That is just plain ridiculous. This is a sport, not pro wrasslin, i want to see fights that actually mean something, especially when there’s a title on the line ….

1-2 in last 3 and he is getting a titleshot… guess that LHW isnt really as stacked as people like to think, either way I will watch and im really excited, but fighters getting titleshots with 1-2 in their last 3 fights really shows how little talent there is at 205

Downside to UFC having a monopoly on the top of the fight game

Is fighters like Rashad can keep getting fucked out of title shots they earned. This reminds me of a point somebody made about the Lesnar/Couture fight. If it had happened 2 years earlier, Couture would have been easily favored. If it happened 2 years later, Lesnar would have the distinct advantage. Everybody knows that Rashad is aging, and soon enough will be out of his prime. The longer Jones puts off fighting Rashad, the more of a physical advantage he’ll have. Rashad is the only contender who has an idea of Jones’s skills and has spent the most time in the ring with him. That is why he’s the most dangerous opponent out there for Jones. And Jones knows it, and the longer he avoids fighting Rashad, the better his chances are for winning. Or Rashad losing his shot.

In summation, this is bullshit.

A 44-year old Couture would not have done any better against Brock than a 46-year old Couture.

Brock was just a bad matchup for the smaller, similarly-skilled Couture. Also, Rashad isn’t that old, not to the point where another six-to-eight months is going to cripple his ability to match up with Jones. He’ll likely fight the winner in March or April, or he’ll take a fight against Phil Davis and then fight for the title in May or June. Its not like he’s going to have to wait four years to fight Jones.

The thing that's most bullshit about all of this...

Is that, despite Dana having made it clear that Machida is 1-3 since winning the title, he is going to be sold as a deserving contender with a convincing record. It’s fucking absurd.

by IRH on Oct 6, 2011 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

Just because he's top 5, does not mean he deserves a title shot.

He’s 1-2 over his last 3 fights no matter how you slice it and the second Shogun fight only happened because Dana, the media and the fans all felt Shogun had won the first match. Dana has been pretty clear, until he needed a replacement for a main event, that Machida lost to Shogun twice and that he lost to Rampage.

They weren't leaving money fights sitting on the shelf...

In favor of guys with questionable streaks coming into the fights. They were guys on winnings streaks in middle of the road divisions. They earned their shots. Machida is only stepping in because Henderson/Shogun is already booked for 139. The UFC clearly didn’t think Machida was next in line, otherwise he’d be in the official title eliminator bout, and not the guy on standby for any Top 10 LHW fight.

by IRH on Oct 6, 2011 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s Dana’s only other option is Hendo, but if we’re talking money then I think the UFC can make more the way it is now. Hendo vs. Jones could be promoted very easily, but then you’re left with Lyoto/Shogun 3 and I don’t think many people want to see that. In the grand scheme of things I think that these two fights will produce better PPV numbers.

by Brennan Linn on Oct 6, 2011 6:03 PM EDT reply actions

As suggested in an article about Sonnen underpromotioned for 136, they may set Silva vs Hendo if he gets past Rua. I think that’s more of a reward for Hendo, as Silva is a better style match-up 4 him than Jones, and gets the chance to avenge his loss against the arguably #1 P4P. For his legacy counts much more.

For a while, it was said that there was the top 4 fighters in the division and no one else. Machida, Shogun, Rampage, and Evans. Jones has already beat 2 of them and is now set to take on a 3rd. I want to see him single-handedly take out the old guard. Hopefully he fights Evans early next year so he could say he beat them all in under a year.

Jones will not be beat by a counter-puncher

I like Machida—definitely more than I like Rashad. But Machida likes to stay on the outside, wait for the other guy to strike and then dart in for straight punches to the face and then hop out.

This style is really bad for facing Jon Jones. People are talking like Machida is that much faster than Jones… He is faster, probably, but he wasn’t that much faster than a plodding Rampage that he could pick dominate Jackson. And he wasn’t that much faster than Shogun Rua.

How much more harder a time will Machida have against someone with a foot of reach more? He has already shown a weakness to leg kicks (vs. Rua). Also, the range when Machida gets past Bones’ fist is the range for Bones’ knees and elbows.

In the Rua fight, Bones could literally stick his arm out straight and put a palm on Shogun’s torso to keep himself out of Rua’s punching range while he could still punch Rua—it looked like a senior in high school bullying a freshman.

If Lyoto fights the same way he usually does, he will stay on the outside and get picked apart by those long-range kicks and punches, and every time he dives in to head-hunt, he’ll either eat an elbow or get clinched. He is not a great dirty-boxer.

The person that takes out Bones will have to take him down with a great shot and beat him up (Rashad has a good chance of this, if he doesn’t eat eat too many leg kicks that will slow down his shoot), or will have to be a really aggressive striker that can get past those long arms and legs and swarm Bones (I do not know who this might be at 205).

Barring a fluke Matt Serra KO punch, the only counter-striker who could probably consistently beat Jones on the feet is Anderson Silva, because of his ridiculous timing and accuracy. Plus, when Anderson feels like it, he can be that aggressive swarming attacker.

Like any fighter, Bones is beatable, and Lyoto has a chance. But Machida does not have any advantages in this fight if he goes with his normal style. His best bet would be to aggressively trade leg-kicks, where his better technique can probably hurt Jones more than the other way around, and then move in once Jones loses a step.

Rashad has a better chance against Jones because he has that fast, powerful takedown, and he can brawl on the inside.

by spamslots on Oct 7, 2011 1:24 AM EDT reply actions

Lyoto isn't a true counter puncher,

he’s actually more of an initiator. Counter strikers generally wait for their opponent to miss, and respond with a counter. Lyoto initiates when his opponent is off balance and unready. 2 different things, IMO
