UFC 137 Results Recap: Cheick Kongo vs. Matt Mitrione

UFC 137 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on October 29, 2011 in Las Vegas, NV. via UFC.com

In the co-main event of UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz, undefeated Heavyweight Matt Mitrione faced UFC veteran gatekeeper Cheick Kongo. In the end, Kongo proved that Mitrione is not yet ready for the top of the division, defeating the former NFL player via unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-28, 29-28. For Mitrione, this is the first loss of his pro career. Kongo is now undefeated in his last four fights.

For fans who had already grown a bit weary of the numerous lackluster decisions, this fight was the final nail in the coffin. Both men spent long periods of the fight circling without engaging or throwing strikes of any kind. Kongo was ultimately able to take control of the fight with his clinch work and better all around game, but this was not a pretty fight. Neither man came out looking good here.

What was the high spot of this fight?

The ending.

Where do these guys go from here?

Kongo is well settled into his groove at this point, and will sit and wait for the next potential challenger to try and get past him. Options for that next fight include Roy Nelson and Stefan Struve. He also could welcome any of the surrent Strikeforce Heavyweights into the UFC.

Mitrione has received a lot of promotional push lately, so I wouldn't expect to see him fall too far down the card, or be given a serious threat the next time out. Expect him to face an opponent on the level of the men he fought prior to Kongo - someone who will swing wildly with him. Again, Struve would work, as would Mark Hunt.

Watch it now, later, or never?

Never. In fact, let us never speak of it again.
