Anderson Silva Fires Back at Chael Sonnen, Comments on Antics

Anderson Silva responds to Chael Sonnen's antics in an interview with Marilia Gabriela. Photo by UFC.com

In an interview with Brazilian journalist and interviewer Marilia Gabriela, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva responded to the antics of Chael Sonnen, stating that Sonnen "does not deserve to fight me". He went on to talk about his feelings on Sonnen's over-the-top comments and behavior:

I didn't get to where I'm at by being arrogant or provoking someone. By doing these antics he ends up denigrating the image of the sport. There's no room for that in this sport. The most important thing he did not do, which was to beat me. He even failed in a drug test, which is worse. (Translation by Tom Mendes)

I'm sure this doesn't calm the crowd that believes Silva needs to face Sonnen, but the decision ultimately comes down to what the UFC wants. Business drives the UFC's revenues, and Sonnen vs. Silva II could be a huge money-making opportunity with the right lead-up and marketing. It's going to happen whether Silva and his manager Ed Soares like it or not.

Silva also talks about his admiration for Vitor Belfort, possibly getting into television after he retires, and how the ladies have always been attracted to him.

Why is it that when an American journalist talks to him

He’s all nice and respectful about stuff and never has bad things to say but when he goes to Brazil and has an interview all of a sudden he has shit to say? I’m not saying Sonnen doesn’t deserve it because he does but it makes him seem fake.

He’s been like that for quite a while.

You do you realize that most Brazilian reporters are asking him questions in Portugese.

Did you see how kind-of-annoyed Silva looked when Mike Straka interviewed him?

Yeah I know the questions are in Portuguese.

But that doesn’t change the fact that he answers them with a completely different attitude. Maybe it’s because he’s not comfortable in the English ones so he just goes to his back up of saying that he respects everyone and has nothing bad to say about anyone. I just wish he would be more truthful and open with the American media. And No I don’t think I’ve seen the Straka interview and if I did I don’t remember Silva being annoyed. Do you have a link?

You might find that on HDNET.
Yeah, it would be cool if he was more open with the American media but . . . that’s Silva. If you or when you see the “Like Water” documentary then you a very annoyed Silva during the phone press conference. Even Soares is like, “yo bro what’s up with the one word answers.”

I think Evans and Sonnen are right, he probably knows more English than he lets on.

Showboating... I hate it

Sonnen is way over the top, but INSIDE the cage he is business. I would rather see that than a guy keeping his hands down and dancing like he just got done watching the Thriller video . I like Anderson and it would be preposterous to deny his skill, but I cannot stand the " clowning" he does in some of his fights. Anything that happens before and after the 15-25 minutes of the actual fight should be taken with a grain of salt, (i.e. Chael in general).

I walk across the dead train yard, remembering who we are.

by skateordie on Oct 29, 2011 10:04 AM EDT reply actions

Hands down isn't clowning

It’s goading, and it’s a very useful skill for creating damage opportunities. The crazy acting shit he did in the Maia fight, and to a lesser degree the Leites and Cote fights, is what I’d call clowning.

Still, I agree that Silva is being a bit hypocritical. He’s not close to the top of the heap when it comes to being respectful and doing what’s best for the sport’s image.

I call you, I talk to me - Anderson Silva

by Orcus on Oct 29, 2011 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Google UFC ppv sales, I’m sure you can find a list of how many sales each ppv had, and of all the cards with title fights, Silvas will all be near the bottom unless there is another title fight to raise sales. It’s common knowledge Silva can’t sell ppvs. There is a article on bloodyelbow about it before every single one of his fights.

by MBTitleist on Oct 29, 2011 11:55 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

it's not common knowledge

using the ‘common knowledge’ argument only means you don’t have the data to back it up. you said, Anderson Silva sells the least PPVs with the exception of Cruz, that’s a pretty big statement, I know he’s not the best seller but I’m pretty sure he’s not the second to last either. again, show me the data…

I call you, I talk to me - Anderson Silva

by Orcus on Oct 29, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

UFC Rio had less than 300k sales… Brock has sold over a million for one ppv. GSP usually has 500-600k sales…

by MBTitleist on Oct 29, 2011 12:00 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

so because Anderson sold less than Brock and GSP

therefore he’s the second to last guy in terms of ppv sells? I see… great logic there.

by Orcus on Oct 29, 2011 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s selling 1/3 of the sales of one fighter, and barely half of another and you think he’s some how not near the bottom of ppv sales for ufc champions? Brock- Cain 1mill, rampage-jones 450k, GSP-shields 800k, Silva Okami 350k. You’re right… He’s easily at the top.

UFC 136 - 250k

Featuring Edgar-Maynard, and Aldo - Florian

by bawssauce on Oct 29, 2011 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

So it goes Cruz last, Edgar/Aldo 2nd to last, Silva 3rd. No matter how you look at it, he struggles to sell ppvs. Unless you load up the card to help him, his numbers are always low. It doesn’t matter where Brock and GSP are popular, what matters is, they sell fights and the original comment that “his highlight reel finishes sells fights” his far from true.

by MBTitleist on Oct 29, 2011 12:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

There are seven UFC champions

One of them (GSP) draws better than Silva. Three of them (Edgar, Aldo, Cruz) draw worse than Silva. Two of them (Jones, Velasquez) we don’t know enough to say definitively whether they’re better or worse draws than Silva.

So among the UFC’s seven champions, Silva is either second, third or fourth in terms of how well he draws. Saying “Only Cruz sells fewer ppvs” is simply wrong, no matter how many times you try to argue with the people who are telling you you’re wrong.

by MichaelDavidSmith on Oct 29, 2011 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Silva is a MW

Lighter weights don’t sell PPVs, aside from BJ Penn, so it really shows how bad Silva’s draw is that you have to compare him to that.

You put Edgar skills, speed, and tenacity into a MW body and he becomes a international star. Then he’d really be the real-life Rocky.

by paythefighters on Oct 29, 2011 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

he was refuting mbtitleist's argument

where he says Silva is second to last in ppv sales when counting champions (he even mentions Brock, which broadens his argument to include not only current champions, but past champions as well). but if you go that route of not comparing MW’s to LW’s, than you can’t compare HW’s to MW’s either…

And they’ve got us talking, so they’re doing something right.

Anderson is nursing an injured shoulder. That is a serious injury. He’s not going to be ready to fight for a while. He’s got to stay in the news so people keep talking about the fight.

Then, when it happens, everyone will carry their emotions to their cable box and press “buy.” I know I will.

by Gideon Jay on Oct 29, 2011 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

He got the injury before the Okami fight and fought with it

It isn’t serious.
-How severe was the injury?

I spoke with my doctors a lot. I had an MRI done right after I started feeling pain in the shoulders and the doctors cleared me, they said it was nothing too serious. It was a small injury, I think it was the muscles in the rotator cuffs, but it bothered me, I will be taking some time off to let it heal.

Personally, I think Silva wants more time to train, as he underestimated Chael last time. But you’re right – Silva knows what he is doing.

by paythefighters on Oct 29, 2011 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Buddy, his doctors did the MRI and said it’s nothing too serious, cearing him to fight. How the fuck does your armchair diagnosis equate Silva’s injury to Pennington’s?

I know shoulder injuries can be serious. I had one that I kept reinjuring a few times a year until I stopped all activity with it for two years. I’ve had friends with similar healing times. However, if doctors say it’s not serious, then it’s not serious. Period.

I think Chael should have never been allowed back in the UFC

But if he’s in, he deserves a title shot. If it wasn’t for the doping scandal, it probably would have been an immediate rematch. Silva got his ass kicked for four and a half rounds and pulled off a hail Mary submission.

Middleweight, as a division, has never had a wrestler of Sonnen’s caliber in it. It’s made the division weak, it allows Silva to showboat and be called the greatest when it’s mostly just that middleweight fighters have shit for takedowns. But Sonnen can power through on just about anyone in the world, he can take Silva down and he can beat Silva up. I’d be worried about that, too, and try to send Sonnen back to the line even though he’s clearly the number one contender.

That said, I think he should have never been allowed back in the UFC. But he’s there and I believe Sonnen is the best middleweight in the world.

I guess you didn’t see this part

do they directly translate that way from portuguese?

Silva probably said something in Portuguese like “Sonnen gives a bad image to the sport with the way he acts”, and the interviewer just used a bigger word in its place. Really stupid IMO because it makes Silva seem like he knows strong english vocabulary in his translations.

it's not a literal translation

I always try to translate things in such manner that it would be understandable to an English speaker (though many times I find errors in my grammar after the fact), without losing the essence of what was said. having said that, the translation is 100% accurate, with no need to change/add/remove/rearrange words. I’m not trying to spin what he said to make him sound eloquent, he is eloquent, IMHO he is one of the most well spoken Brazilian fighter out there. I didn’t write "Sonnen gives a bad image to the sport with the way he acts" because that’s not what he said.

Little did we know Anderson Silva was trolling us by hanging out with Justin Bieber.

I have no problem with fighters selling a fight, but it bothers me when a fighter uses racism, xenophobia and bigotry.
Chael Sonnen lost to Anderson Silva, not by a controversial split decision, but by tapping out because he was nearly unconscious. He lost fair and square to a far superior fighter with a bruised rib.

"We will be perfect in every aspect of the game. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You fumble the football and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hind parts...and then you will run a mile. Perfection. Let's get to work."
