I am not a fan (to be polite) of GSP, so, I could not have been happier when St. Pierre versus Diaz was announced. Nick Diaz is the antithesis of Georges St. Pierre, the heel to GSP’s babyface, the Joker to GSP’s Batman. Due to circumstances of which we are all familiar, this match will be delayed, if not scrapped all together. Instead, the UFC has given us a main event for 137 that I am almost equally excited for: Penn/Diaz. I wanted to wait to write this until after the BE Staff announced their predictions, but I can’t hold my prediction in any longer. Perhaps some of the staff will agree with my assessment. BJ Penn will defeat Nick Diaz via doctor stoppage.
I agree with what seems to be the general consensus that this fight will be decided on the feet. I do not think either man can submit the other, although I believe neither man is afraid to try. Both Penn and Diaz have shown to have stalwart faith in their respective boxing skills. Both men have shown to be devastating strikers; Penn with punching power that surprises me every time I see it and Diaz with the often cited "high volume" of punches that tends to overwhelm the opponents that fight Diaz on the feet. Both men have proven they have iron chins and can take a punch as well as they can give a punch. My prediction comes from the simple fact that Diaz tends to be a bleeder and Penn tends to make people bleed.
Nick has had surgery to remove scar tissue and hopefully prevent bleeding from his eyebrow area but he still tends to bleed frequently.
Diaz WILL get hit by Penn. His taunting and lack of striking defense ensure this. I also believe Diaz will hit Penn. However, I do not think that either man will KO the other. I have read arguments that Penn will dominate Diaz with his wrestling. While I see Penn controlling the action on the floor, if it goes there, with Diaz voraciously attempting submissions, I don’t see Penn choosing this avenue. Penn, being unimpressed with Diaz’s punching power will want to keep it standing. Even with Diaz landing a high volume of strikes, Penn will eventually open Diaz up. I predict a lot of bleeding, and Diaz fighting as if he were simply "seeing red" and not actually looking through his own blood. The ref will stop the fight and the doctor will call it. If this were a five rounder, I think the doctor stoppage would be even more likely.
If someone else already called this (I’m sure they have), sorry to jack your prediction and I agree with you completely.
