Thanks To Mike Fagan
Let's try this again.
As many of you know, Mike and Bloody Elbow have parted ways. We'll not get into the reasons, some of them were avoidable, some inevitable, some regrettable, some not.
But I do want to take this moment to acknowledge his many contributions to this site.
He came on board when he pointed out that Brent and I couldn't write a gambling analysis to save our lives. When we challenged him to do better he did. His gambling posts were always some of the best in the biz as were his post-fight analysis, his striking breakdowns and his The Week In Quotes.
Mike will be missed.
Please feel free to share your favorite Fagan moments in the comments.

Oh, I don't know.
The time he said arguing with me was like arguing with SmarterChild.
Proposing that all PEDs be legalized and unregulated for in-competition use.
Calling us all homophobes because we wanted Ebersole to kick Hallman’s ass when we saw his outfit.
Every single time someone took offense to TWIQ and Mike made a fart noise in response.
And let’s not forget our attempt at live commentary over UFC events. Now that the two of us have some free time, maybe we can bring those back.
This was nice of you, Nate. Well done.

Just to get my word out here...
I take no position on what has transpired since I don’t have any insight into the details. I have zero value judgements for Mike Fagan, Bloody Elbow, SBNation, or any of the parties involved.
That said, the community acting entitled to information like that is fucking stupid. Nobody but Mike deserves to know what happened. If you give an explanation, cool. If not, it’s not our problem or our right to know. That said, here’s a fun thing to save for the future.
[writer/contributor/editor] is no longer part of Bloody Elbow staff. We will miss [him/her], but wish them the best and hope to see [him/her] flourish in a new setting. Bloody Elbow will continue to provide you with the best MMA coverage and aggregation.
Any commenter or community member who demands more than that is an asshole.

Many of us spends a lot of time here, and Mike has been a mainstay. It’s obvious that he’s well-liked, and while many of us probably haven’t met him, we still have some concern for his well-being and are fans of his work. I don’t see what’s wrong in knowing what happened with him as it’s not just for the sake of gossip, but for legit concern.

I realize...
…that there wasn’t really any precedent for what happened, and there was no way to anticipate the reaction. I also realize that going forward, it’s hard to say that any precedent has been set, because in an environment like this where staff and community mingle so freely, it’s not hard to imagine a similar reaction to the banning of an active community member, or rampant speculation in the case of what was actually an amicable parting of ways.
In any case, I think this was the best course of action, and appreciate the desire to give the community what they clearly wanted.

He got mine, at least.
He was quite obviously the best writer on the blog (although I agree that the quality on BE is generally quite high) and he was the only author on the site whose texts I ever read only because of authorship. When reading BE I scan for interesting content – and Mike Fagan.
Also. While the BE blog is really good, as everyone knows BE radio is done by people who can’t craft an interesting sentence if their life depended on it. At least it was like that a while ago, I have given it up completely now. But, that said, sometimes Fagan would show up on there and suddenly it would beat even most of the Sherdog radio shows.
I hope you had good reasons for sacking him.

Obviously, I’ll respect Kid Nate’s wishes.
Normally I wouldn’t care that the author of a fanpost intended for all comments on the subject matter be positive. But I assumed that this being a fanpost was really more of a technicality due to the format, and this is more an announcement from staff for a limited purpose. Hence, my asking.

Fagan was a huge help when I started as a writer for this site, and has made me a better writer. Besides straightening out how I wrote stuff (Single spaces between sentences! What the fuck kind of headline is that!), he gave me a lot of straight up advice on how to convey things and format them in a logical manner. He also gave it to me straight – if what I wrote sucked, he’d tell me it sucked. I respect honesty, and he’s always been honest with me. And I think he was always honest in his writing, even if it pissed people off occasionally (okay, all the damn time).
He’s one of the few MMA writers that can legitimately make me laugh at some of his one-liners. I’ve routinely said “God damn!” or “Holy shit!” out loud involuntarily in the office while reading TWIQ, and had to explain what the fuck I was laughing at to my boss. I understand why many don’t dig it, but I always enjoy a cynical, satirical look at the world and tend not to take stuff too seriously most of the time. Fagan definitely brought that to the table. In addition to that, we both really making fun of Cabbage. What’s not to like there?
Mikey’s my friend, and I’m gonna miss him around here. Cheers to you for all your hard work buddy, I hope you keep it up, and I’ll do my best to keep Roth’s ego in check in your absence. It’s not gonna be easy though. Orthodoxy rules!

I could be an editor, I hate pretty much any kind of writing that goes beyond the subject so that is why I don’t really care if Fagan or Roth gets fired because they seem to be hellbent on incorporating personal opinion into their pieces.

I don't think that's just the way I see it. I think that's the way it is. Are there alternative views? Yes. Will any of them stand close scrutiny? No.

When Snowden does an op-ed piece on MMAnation it’s just like in a newspaper, you know what it is and typically is in the “weighing in” section.

Fagan didn't ask me to write for SackMikeGoldberg.com when he was looking for new writers
However, he made up for it by being one of the guys to push for me to be added to staff on Bloody Elbow. I can’t be more appreciative to be honest. I’m glad that Nate decided to put this post together because I think Mike deserves this. He was appreciated by the community and the staff and the site will definitely miss him.
My favorite Mike Fagan moment was doing BE radio with him and Burke. That was my favorite moment because it was just the three of us joking around after a UFC (I think 133?). I don’t know or care if the listeners enjoyed it but I know that I did and I believe Mike and Burke did as well.

So please don’t go muddying it up with more drama.
Fagan was the first staff member to directly reply to me. That may not seem like much, but I only found this site out of sheer luck. I was looking for the video of Kalib Starnes and Nate Quarry back in 2009 sometime, and found Watch Kalib Run… This led me to BE the day after. But the community was so overwhelming. You’re all so knowledgeable, and there’s so many of you, that I was a bit timid to post comments at first for fear of being bombarded. Having a conversation with him about his article while being a nobody to the site really showed the camaraderie among the community here. I never sat around on forums or blogs before learning of this site, nor had anyone to chat with who had the same amount of passion for MMA as I did. I never became such a dedicated and educated fan of MMA until I became a member here. So in a way Fagan’s just as responsible as anyone for my increased enthusiasm for the sport. Thank you Mike.

I've started to compose comments three times
and erased them all because I’m afraid they’ll get me banned, which sucks, since in 6,000+ comments and a gaggle of fan posts, I’ve never even been warned in the past.
My outside take, for what it’s worth, is that the strength of Bloody Elbow is the community. I realize this is a self-serving statement, but the reason I come here is to participate in the best MMA community on the Internet, much more than just to read news, which I can get anywhere.
Because the community is so tight-knit, I think we naturally form much stronger connections to staff members than do the readers of most blogs. So, for whatever we may “deserve”, I think our curiosity and concern about major changes in staff is certainly warranted.
All the disappearing comments and content over the past few days has bummed me out much more than losing Fagan (Sorry Mike). Part of the social compact here — at least in the past — has been that commenters are free to express themselves, as long as they follow the rules. But I’m not sure I know what the rules even are anymore.

I think you stumbled upon the correct solution
Had this post gone up mid-week, we’re not having this discussion. You informed BE readers Mike is no longer on staff, thanked him for his work, wished him the best, let people comment about the departed writer. But the emphasis of this site is MMA news, not staff comings and goings.
Since this went up late, you were faced with two (and I’m guessing a lot more than that) fanposts with speculation as to what happened, the vast majority of which was completely conjecture based on no facts. Not sure most of us would have chosen to zap them into a memory hole, but I certainly can understand why you did. This is a MMA news commentary and news site, let’s stay focused on that, especially with two big MMA shows this weekend in UFC and Bellator, not to mention the fact Bellator’s purchase by Viacom has been almost completely ignored in this mess of a week.
Lessons were learned, bro hugs were given, funny gifs were posted and we all moved on. Oh, and Matt Roth got some hate mail, but not from me.
Now I wanna go watch BJ Penn beat the mess out of Diaz.
"Complacency is your demise." - Kerry King
Agreed, and rec’d. What’s bummed me most is how we’ve seen some editors go in the other two posts and basically said that we’re only readers, that we should just shut our mouths, and that we’re not entitled to shit. As you’ve said, the community is the best part about Bloody Elbow, and to have editors come in and basically say that we don’t matter, well that’s just an immense slap in all our faces. And that bums me out. What the heck is happening to to the BE that we all love/loved so much?
by Shnak on Oct 28, 2011 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions 6 recs
Exactly this. People may stop by here once to check out the news, but it is the community that keeps them coming back. Without a doubt, it is the community (including the staff) that makes this a special place.
I said as much in one of the posts that got deleted. Brent’s response was that commenters are only a vocal minority. That we are less then 1% of the people who frequent BE, and appeasing us is not important. I don’t believe that. I think we are the 1% that represents the rest of the community. I also think that there are a lot of lurkers who enjoy the community without taking an active part. I know I lurked here for about a year before I ever worked up the nerve to post anything.
Yeah, that comment by Brent was the one I was referring to… he really disappointed me with that comment. Still a big fan of him and his writting, but to hear him say something like makes me think he’s starting to turn his back on us a little bit…. I suppose it was inevitable, nothing this good lasts very long.
You know...
I’m not exactly a prolific commenter, but the only person I’ve really seen come out and say anything resembling what you’ve said is Luke, and if you’ve been around these parts long enough then you wouldn’t really expect anything different from Luke. Luke is a talented guy that comes across sometimes as a borderline arrogant person, but wouldn’t be where he was today if he didn’t feel as strongly as he does about his opinions and if he didn’t stand behind them like he does. Did he come across as an insufferable prick in the comments to those unfamiliar with him? Possibly. Did he fan the flames a bit when it wasn’t needed? Sure. Was he wrong? Not really. However even more important than that, to pretend that his words, or anyone’s words for that matter, still speak/ever spoke for the entire staff is foolish at best, and entirely disingenuous at worst.
I’m a huge supporter of Fagan. He was a great writer here at BE, and he’ll be a great writer elsewhere. This situation was handled poorly, and well Kid Nate has basically done as much as he possibly can to own up to that in this thread. If that’s not enough for you? Well, that’s some tough luck. I’m not going to dwell on it and just assume that Nate has learned from the way he handled the situation, and it won’t go down like that in the future. That’s all we can really hope for as a community.
So again. Godspeed Fagan, I hope I can continue to read your work elsewhere. You’ll be missed here at BE by the community, and likely much of the staff as well. Thanks Nate for doing what you could to make things right.
by Jacob Hayes on Oct 28, 2011 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
Nope, Brent’s the one that disappointed me with his comments. As you said, Luke may have said something too, but we know Luke, that’s okay. But whatever, it’s fine. I’m over it now. I’ll enjoy what’s left of BE, both in terms of writers and in terms of time… because we all know the SB Nation execs would love nothing more than to shut down BE if they could find a way for all of us to move over to MMA Nation…
that is absurd
SBN execs would like nothing more than for BE to double in size.

Because their newest and shiniest toy is MMA Nation, and it’s clear their agenda is to make MMA Nation THE MMA site on SB Nation…
Throwing away traffic on BE wouldn’t necessarily make MMA Nation any more popular. It’s growth is going to have to be organic, just like BE’s has been. Also, considering how massive BE is, they’re not going to throw it away…they more eyes on BE, the more potential eyes for MMA Nation.
The cross posting process we see Nate doing with the “Check this out at MMA Nation” posts aren’t going to make an impact immediately, but having a massive audience to tap into when there’s a fun piece on the other site is a good tool that should in theory help MMA Nation grow.

Let me tell you something...
Mike Fagan was the person who brought BE to Twitter. That may not sound like that big of a deal right now, but at the time none of the other people on the staff, most of whom were pretty intelligent, identified it as a necessary step. Fagan was always brainstorming, coming up with ideas, during the time that I worked on the site. I can’t say that I always agreed with the sentiments expressed in his writing, but I always viewed his work as being of extremely good quality.
I think that in most successful ventures there are a number of people along the way who were essential in making it go. Mike Fagan’s contribution has been significant. Thank’s Mike.

It makes me sad to see BE loose another good writer. I think that one of the biggest reasons BE was able to build such an educated/intelligent community was the solid writing. When you guys brought Luke over from Mad Squabbles, he was the best MMA writer. You guys have maintained that quality of writing with a handful of writers and it’s disappointing to see them all leave.
I have no idea what happened but I hope it was something extreme.
Too Bad
It’s really too bad this whole thing happened. I think it’s fair to say that a lot of mma media is similar. People post articles on the weigh ins, injury suspensions, fighter x is looking for a KO, fighter y is ready for title contention, so on and so forth. I think it’s rare to find mma writers who stand out in the crowd, and for me Mike Fagan was one of those writers. I didn’t always agree with what he wrote but I was always interested to read it. It’s a shame that BE is losing him over what were probably avoidable circumstances. I have less of a reason to check BE every day now.

woah I wished I hadnt refreshed my page
I got rid of the chat log that I didnt get to read hahaha .. oh well ..
the gossip girl inside me is gone now anyway
all of this will be null and void when nate brings me aboard and I take this site to heights unknown
but still
have great success and a road full of awesomeness wherever you go Fagan
or just with anything you do .. I too appreciated your work
thanks again
Damn
That’s really too bad. He was a big reason I keep coming to the site, and IMO was the best writer on the site.
Cheers to you Fagan.
BE Staff!
There’s Luke and his condescending brilliance. Master, MASTER of Radio and interviews.
There’s Nate and his funny yet authoritarian ways, plus… great writing.
There’s Snow, the Skip Bayless of MMA shit stirring.
And then there’s Fagan, I hope he’s a nice a guy in real life, I won’t miss him.
On a personal note, you have fans it seems, do your thing, good luck.
Unbanned me also after a mad ban from Roth for calling his writing in to question. (Which is a pretty popular opinion outside BE, he shouldn’t take it personal, it’s just writing)
From an editorial standpoint, Fagan was definitely the most polished. His content and sarcastic asshole attitude will be missed.

That's not being honest.
You got banned for calling for my termination repeatedly.

Thnx Mike
you wrote some pretty great stuff, hope you find success and a more welcoming environment in whatever you choose to do
I am willing to test myself against the toughest fighters in the world, in front of hundreds of thousands or even millions of fans, over and over again. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but I always come to fight. I've been doing this for the past fourteen years, and I have at least a few more strong years left in me. What have you done in the past fourteen years other than act like a moron on this forum and hang on Anderson's nuts? - Dan Henderson.
bummed
step away from BE for a little bit and now of of the best, and one of my favorite, writers of MMA anywhere on SB nation (or the internet for that matter) is fired.
I’ve spent hours and hours reading his work, as well as laughing, thinking, commenting, and sometimes raging on it. Wish i knew what was going on after such an investment on my part.
Regardless, Mr. Fagan will be missed.
"Who are you and how the hell did you get in here?"
"I'm a locksmith... and i'm a locksmith."
Someone want to lay out exactly what happened?
I mean cut the shit, what happened? Maybe its been explained and I havent seen it but it seems like nobody wanted to talk about why.
Why not? Is it some secrete? What was it, did he do something, say something, piss the wrong people off? Like what happened?
THERE WAS A FIRE FIGHT!!!

"Maybe, you throw some pepper at him."
