CNN to Air Story On Women's MMA Sunday Night
News channel CNN will be airing a story looking inside the world of Women's MMA this Sunday night. The story will be hosted by Amber Lyon, an Emmy-award winning journalist who promises to look at why women step into the cage for little financial reward and recognition. Here's the writeup on it, and you can catch the video preview for it after the jump. Bloody Elbow will be providing a live discussion post for the show Sunday as well.
Mixed Martial Arts, or M.M.A., is a full contact combat sport that was once banned in much of the United States. Today, it’s one of the fastest growing sports among men… and now women. But why would any woman climb into a cage for all-out combat for what amounts to almost nothing? CNN’s Amber Lyon steps into the Octagon to find out.
"Fighter Girls" is one of four riveting stories airing on CNN Presents hosted by CNN’s Soledad O’Brien and Dr. Sanjay Gupta this Sunday, October 23 at 8:00 pm ET, re-airing at 11:00 pm ET and 2:00 am ET.

Came here to say exactly the same thing, that line stands out like a sore thumb. They might aswell say “but why would women want to partake in such a pointless sport?”.
Even if they mean financially, i’m sure the high end female fighters are paid relatively well.

“CNN’s Amber Lyon investigates the lucrative business of mixes martial arts and why men have more advantages than women.”
Oh boy, here we go.
I don't know what the world may need but a V8 engines a good start for me.
Men have an advantages over women in any sport you can think of that both sexes play (monetarily).
If you can't wow them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit.
LSU! LSU! LSU! LSU! LSU! LSU!
Exceptions would be sailing/yachting and equestrian events
Both of which are completely intergender, even in the Olympics. Neither of those pay much though.
Sailing is about as much of a sport as poker is. Same with horse riding and NASCAR, but technically you are correct.

I think you might want to reconsider that horse riding classification
It requires conditioning and athletecism. Its a sport.

So does sailing.
Watch the Volvo Ocean Race – it starts on October 29. Those guys (and gals) are athletes.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Bruce Buffer would argue the same about Poker tournaments
and a basketball player/Football player/MMA fighter would laugh at either one being considered a sport. They’re not even close.

People who partake in equestrian and yachting don't generally want for money.

This is pretty ignorant
My mother went to college on a partial equestrian scholarship (cross-country, jumping, and steeplechase) and barely made ends meet as a music teacher until she was in her mid-40s. Yes, she got access to horses at a public stable growing up, but part of that was because she had a part-time job teaching people how to ride while in high school. She did not come from rich family. She just happened to have a father who grew up on a farm and still loved horses himself. While people who are heavy into equestrian events are more likely to be upper-middle class or upper class than most folks, a lot of people in that scene just come from families of farmers and ranchers. And when you get to race horse jockeys, which can be grueling, brutal work, you almost never see rich people doing that.
As for yachting/sailing, I have no idea how rich people are in that scene, but after looking it up, the entrance fee for youth sailing at the Golden Gate Yacht Club (defending America’s Cup Champions) is $200 a year. That includes participating in races. That’s less than a boxing gym. The main criteria is just an interest in the sport. I would guess there’s a disproportionate amount of rich folk, but at the elite level it can be a career and you’re usually sponsored or patroned. Also, sailing and yachting can be dangerous as fuck. There are sailing events with individuals and yachting events where you’re talking about groups of up to 30 people working in precision in sometimes deadly conditions in checkpoint races. People routinely fall overboard and storms can come out of nowhere and capsize boats. It could probably be put it on the list of sports with a higher fatality rate than MMA, next time a bill comes up in NY state.
is that true for Tennis? I don’t know what their pay is. Seems like I know a lot more female Tennis players than males though.
I was wondering the same, so I looked it up.
The highest-paid female athlete in the world (as of 2011) is Maria Sharapova, who is ranked #29 among the top-50 athletes (male or female) at $24.2 million. She’s the only woman in the top-50.
Among tennis players, Federer (#4, at $47 million) and Nadal (#12 at $31.5 million) beat her.

If you care enough to see the complete top-50, it's in a much easier to read list form...

Of note:
Tennis players dominate the list [of highest-paid female athletes] with seven of the ten spots. The ten highest paid women made $113 million over the past 12-months, up 1% from 2010. By comparison the 10 highest-paid men earned a collective $449 million.

Women definitely do not get paid as much as men in tennis.
They also play less than men. Women play a best of 3 sets while men play best of 5.
No shit
Men can’t get pregnant and that includes the pregnant-looking Roy Nelson.

1- if you keep the plumbing, you’re technically not a man. i will respect the fact that you legally are a man, but i’m not impressed with a pregnancy like that.
2- DeVito looks a little to happy to be an OB/GYN. not cool.

Difference between gender and sex. Sex is what you are born as and what you are biologically, and gender is what you identify yourself as.

i understand
and that’s totally cool. the problem is the astonishment of a ‘pregnant man’ when the dude wasn’t born a man. the gender identity deal is fine by me. let’s just not be so surprised.

As this point, top level male mixed martial artists are better than top level female mixed martial artist. Of course they’re going to get paid more.

She’s not gonna learn much about WMMA going into the Octagon.

Looked up Michele Gutierrez on the FighterGirls.com database (ironically) and then at Sherdog. I’m hoping FighterGirls in the one that’s out of date as it lists her as being part of Kim Couture’s fight team and Sherdog lists her as being part of Wanderlei Silva’s. Anyway she’s a Strawweight, 3-2 record. Her first match was a loss to Felice Herrig just as Herrig was getting really good at MMA, so I wouldn’t hold that one against her really. If Gutierrez is with Wand Fight Team then she’s with a pretty good camp at least. Let’s hope she’s articulate if she’s going to be the main subject of a story about MMA.
she’s articulate and telegenic, as far as i’ve been able to observe from her interviews.
