paul harris trying to hug the other guy and say the match is over

bad reffing, why argue, the guy knew he was done

Agree,

The Ref messed this one up…not decisive enough. It looked like Avellan tapped before the Ref restarted the match.

by higgledy-piggledy on Oct 18, 2011 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, I can certainly see why he thought the match was over. I’m not a grappler myself so maybe I shouldn’t comment, but to me it looked like they could have let them finish the submission attempt even though it was out of the marked area. He just fucked the leg up right away when they restarted it anyway.

by Horselover Fat on Oct 17, 2011 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

ADCC rules allow for submissions to be finished off the mats. Jeff Glover finished a brabo off the mats and Werdum had Magalhaes in an armbar for seemingly hours off the mats.

Oh, okay. So why was it restarted? Just bad refereeing?

by Horselover Fat on Oct 18, 2011 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

With that particular leglock, you can kind of go in an infinite chain of rolls, as the rolling allows the person stuck in the leglock to not quite get submitted and prevents the other person from finishing it.

Without that momentum of the roll, you get what happened to Avellan after the restart.

Don't see why people were criticizing Toquinho here.

He didn’t do anything wrong in the slightest

I'm a bit surprised too.

I remember a guy from one of the SB Nation sites saying Toquinho hit the other one after the ref stopped the match for the first time. I don’t see that at all. Just a misunderstanding.

while I don't know the grapplings rules

the 2nd restart seems like a bad knee injury just waiting to happen and simply dangerous.

you got to remember that when watching this live

A. it was at a different angle, so we didn’t have a great view of what happened out of bounds

B. we didn’t know a restart was coming, so it seemed Avellan was upset about what took place out of bounds

C. While we still trying to figure out what just happened Avellan’s knee was shredded

I actually feel bad for Palhares in some ways,

I think he wants to be a good sport, but just isn’t the brightest guy in the world and is easily confused. While he’s competing he’s looking to fuck you up, but odd things just keep happening with this dude.

he might simply be very brusque or not very bright, as you pointed out. i’m starting to think it’s both.

I don't see how this is Palhares' fault

Palhares just looked like he was doing what he was told to do, but he wasn’t doing anything that was too out of the ordinary.

In the words of Omar Little: "Indeed."

It does boggle the mind that anyone would agree to restart in that position. With Paul Harris doing the yanking, you are basically signing up for a few weeks of rehab, minimum. If he yanks really hard, welcome to surgery.

I don't know how else you would go about it, though.

Personally, I don’t think there should even be an out of bounds. The grapplers should be able to use however much mat space they need (as long as noone is blatantly running away), and the spectators/ cameramen/ coaches need to move the fuck out of the way.

After watching the video, it does appear that Palhares didn't do anything wrong.

I rewatched the part where he tries to hug the other guy, and it definitely was a hug in Palhares’ own way. The dude is just ignorant of his own strength sometimes, as it did seem like an aggressive hug where he almost seemed to smack the other guy, which from the other guy’s perspective, I can understand. But the video shows it was innocent enough. It’s like my 2 year old nephew when he gives hugs. Kid grips you like a vice. Except, you know, it’s Palhares, and it’s like a bear twisting your head off, haha.

Avellan didn't come off too well to me in that clip.

I don’t know the history between the two of them or anything but I mean, he is competiting in submission grappling at the highest of levels. He should be comfortable with the idea that his limbs could get seriously jacked up and react accordingly.

He was obviously caught deep in the submission prior to the ref calling for them to stop, so he had to figure that he was almost certainly going to be tapped out.

And then he won’t make eye contact with Palhares after the match when Rousimar goes to pay him respect? I mean, come on man, you lost and it’s your own stubborn fault that you got hurt in the process. When your opponent comes over and bows his head to you, let him know that it’s all good.

All these, uh, dealmakers making deals. Ya know, I don't, all I know is I'm ready to fight so, ya know, I'm sorry I didn't make it to the beauty pageant.

Same here.

I realize he’s both tore up and disappointed, but also a poor sport here. What was he expecting to happen after the restart? If anything I thought the ref showed some poor judgement in restarting them. It was already over. Rousimar seems a bit nutty, but I didn’t see anything wrong with how he conducted himself. Just a misunderstanding perhaps.

that’s an awful one too, but I don’t think it should’ve been THAT easy, it’s pretty damn clear what the guy on top will attempt, how do you not keep your chin clamped down tight?

by Democritus on Oct 18, 2011 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

What I love about this clip is when the referee goes to restart them he taps the top fighter on the back and the top of the head, giving him the quick draw. A good example of poor reffing.

how terrifying...

to reset a match in that position against ROUSIMAR PALHARES… I would’ve just kept both hands hovering over him to insta-tap.

by Democritus on Oct 18, 2011 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

Anyone remember a ufc fight where

the fight was against the cage on the ground in guard and the ref called timeout for a mouthguard or something else meaningless. The ref then puts them back in guard with the top guy in a high posture. The top guy cocks him arm back and asks the ref if he can start, the ref nods yes without even giving a tap-start or any fair warning, so the top guy just get to pound the bottom guy out for free. Anyone remember which fight that was?

by Atgreat on Oct 18, 2011 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

I remember something similar in Arlovski vs. Pe de Pano

Cruz was going for a leglock and Herb Dean paused them after Arlovski kicked him illegally in the face. Literally half a second after Herb restarted them in the leglock position, Arlovski cracked Cruz with a punch and knocked him out. It looked like Cruz hadn’t realized Herb had restarted them.

When this was first reported i immediatly thought back to Palhares refusing to let go of leg locks. However it really doesn’t look like he did much wrong. Not taking any part in grappling tournaments myself I can’t be 100% sure but to me it just looks like he thought it had been stopped, which you can’t blame him for through the language barrier.

His playful “nervous” attempt at a hug and patting Avellan on the head at the end was also pretty funny.

by crazybones on Oct 18, 2011 3:39 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I was the first to blame Palhares without watching the clip

and now I’ll officially say: I AM SORRY. He didn’t do anything wrong. The ref stopped it, the other guy (hereinafter called “the retard”) didn’t really tap, but his knee was about to burst, so a good stoppage. I don’t know the grappling rules, but this couldn’t end well. Still, the retard thought it would be best if they continue where they finished. 2 seconds in the future he’s screaming in pain. Well, mr. retard, that’s why we have a saying “be careful what you wish for”.

I´m glad that they put this video up for free.

This way people can really see for themselves what whent down. It was a bit sad to see Toquinho get so much shit for a situation that was not his fault.

After the final, Galvao gave him a hug and slapped him back (Toquinho was “slapp hugging” everyone after the Avellan match) and Toquinho was just laughing about it.

Also, allthough Avellan got it the worst, Toquinho also hurt the foot of one of his other oponents (I think it was Rafael Lovato, but I don´t quite remember) and leglocked his way to the -88 kg final.

I think he's fine....

a video breakdown from Avellans team was posted shortly after the event. He says that the medical person who checked him out said he’d be good to go by the weekend after the event:

In the interview he comes off, again, poorly. Claiming that after the ref stoppage that Palhares cranked the heel hook for 3 to 4 seconds, which is a severe overexaggeration, and complaining that Palhares shoulder bumped him during the pre fight handshake and smacked him in the head after the ref stoppage. He and his teammates go on to suggest that Palhares is half retarded. In detailing the first out of bounds stoppage he says the ref told them to stop, so he stopped, while Palhares continued to crank the move, which led to his knee popping.

I’ll say again, in the best submission grappling tournament in the world, you’d better be on your game at all times. Do not stop resisting a submission simply because the referee tells you to stop! Avellan should have waited until Palhares let go before he relaxed.

And to go on to say that he’s half retarded is yet another show of very poor sportsmanship.

All these, uh, dealmakers making deals. Ya know, I don't, all I know is I'm ready to fight so, ya know, I'm sorry I didn't make it to the beauty pageant.
