Report: K-1 Grand Prix 2011 Cancelled
It looks like the dreams of a 2011 K-1 World Grand Prix may finally be dead. Reports are beginning to surface that the Final 16 of the Grand Prix, scheduled for October 29 in Nanjing, China, has been cancelled, though there is still no official word from K-1.
The most credible report comes from Anil Dubar, manager to K-1 fighter Daniel Ghita, who announced on a Dutch blog that the Final 16 event was cancelled. This news is not much of a surprise, as it comes at the end of a week full of last minute scrambling on K-1's part.
As we reported last week, Tyrone Spong confirmed that, as of one week ago, he had not been paid for past K-1 fights and was unlikely to participate in this year's tournament. We've known for quite some time that many fighters were still waiting for payments, which could potentially cripple the 2011 tournament. Then, earlier this week, news came out that K-1 was working to take care of this problem, but in a rather odd way.
LiverKick.com reports that K-1 did indeed offer some of this year's Final 16 fighters a contract for the Final 16 event, but that by signing the contract those fighters would have to forfeit their rights to half of the money due to them from previous fights. It's unknown exactly who was offered this deal, or if anyone signed it.
One thing we do know - fighters represented by It's Showtime (the European organization who is helping promote the Grand Prix and manages many of the fighters involved) were not given this offer. It's Showtime President Simon Rutz has been very vocal about his fighters' lack of pay and the fact that if this was not sorted out, his fighters would not take part. He gave K-1 a deadline of this past Friday to receive payment. Again, LiverKick.com reports that as of Sunday, there is no word of that payment.
Finally, there is no mention of the event on the website for the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium (the alleged site of the show) nor any information on how to purchase tickets.
With only two weeks until the show, tickets not on sale, fighters and managers publicly saying that they are off the show, and K-1's biggest partner gearing up to pull their fighters, it certainly seems like this is a done deal. I would expect K-1 will keep trying to pull it together and will resist officially cancelling until the last minute. Given their track record, don't be surprised if they actually cancel the Final 16, but still say a Final 8 will happen in December. But at this point, it's time to accept facts. The best kickboxing tournament in the world is over.
Rest in Peace K-1 Grand Prix.

Yeah, but maybe, just maybe, the limit have finaly been crossed this time (at least for those who see anny type of option). We´ll se, kickboxers don´t really have that manny other places to make big money, so manny will take the offer from K-1, even if they very well might not get paid. In the past, K-1 made some fighters some pretty big money, and that still lives in the minds of some people..

The world became a less amazing place on June 18 2011, with the death of Clarence Clemons. R.I.P. Big Man, you will be sorely missed.
Some people don´t like the saxophone, but if you can´t rock to the Jungleland solo, you are dead inside!
You realize they're co-promoting with another organization right?
If It’s Showtime pulls their fighters the Final 16 is dead in the water. K-1 made some fighters rich, but those fighters earned that money and it’s stupid for them to put their health on the line for free, and they certainly don’t owe K-1 free fights. As it stands it looks like quite a few fighters are pulling out of this, including Badr Hari and Daniel Ghita. K-1 does have some alternates lined up but I don’t think it’s going to be enough. Believe it or not there are other places these guys can make money.

K-1 is getting what they deserve. If you can’t pay the fighters, you don’t deserve to be in business. I just feel bad for the fighters that sacrificed their time and their bodies for this tournament, paid for their training camps, only to be screwed by K-1. K-1 had to know full well that they could not pay their fighters well before this event even happened. People need to go to jail.

I think a lot of K-1’s atrocious business decisions would be more acceptable to a Japanese audience. Still, deals like this wouldn’t be unheard of in America. If the people who are owed money are convinced the only chance of ever getting paid is to make K-1 profitable again, it suddenly becomes reasonable to sign the contracts; at face value they are criminal.

I don’t know. If they already have a lawyer under contract, it couldn’t hurt not to sue? No idea if legal fees would end up outweighing any potential gains.
"He's like Elvis in Korea! They love him there." - Mike Goldberg on Denis Kang
Plus,
they’d have to consider the extra complications of K-1 and FEG being Japanese organizations. I have no idea if Japanese law would make it easier or harder for the fighters to recoup anything.
RIP
Really a shame for the fighters. The GP was always an amazing spectacle and in recent years didn’t disappoint. I hope to see high level kickboxing on a big scale with big names again soon. It’s Showtime is showing promise, but needs to continue to grow.
Fuck, didn't want to read that, assumed I would though.

I stayed up all night to watch the Grand Prix last year, and loved seeing Overeem take the tournament. I was eager to watch it this year.
So is this a death knell in particular for this year’s Grand Prix? The Grand Prix as a whole? K-1 as a whole?
Does this potentially make Alistair Overeem the LAST K-1 World Grand Prix champion ever?

I wish a new high level stand up org would appear. Its Showtime does not have a good rule set. If only M Thai was bigger, that is a great rule set to decide the best strikers. K-1 rules set was weak, people brought up competing under that rule set might now even be the best strikers, top mma striker like Anderson Silva would be better.

Hopefully a kickboxing fan can field this question. I remember hearing that kicks were massively overvalued compared to punches, and some other stuff I can’t quite recall.
"He's like Elvis in Korea! They love him there." - Mike Goldberg on Denis Kang
Thai scoring gives the most emphasis on elbows, then knees, then kicks, then punches bringing up the rear. So a very skilled boxer who lands a ton of punches but never throws a kick, elbow, or punch, can lose a round if he’s hit by one really sweet elbow.
It’s also super shady and full of corruption and the pacing of the fights is heavily influenced by ringside gambling. It’s still awesome, but these are downsides.

Isn’t it more kicks / knees → elbows → punches?
It also matters where it lands, how cleanly, and how hard. Head and body is preferred, then legs and arms (but they have to be hard there).

I love(d) staying up late, jacked on coffee and whiskey, watching the grand prix. Definitely my favorite non MMA event of the year. This is a real disappointment.
Hopefully It’s Showtime will be able to recapture the magic of the Grand Prix, it was definitely more exciting than the average kickboxing event. It could be difficult for them though, a lot of kickboxing’s biggest stars are either nearing retirement age or leaving the sport while still in their prime.

This blows. The K-1 Grand Prix might be the single best event in combat sports in terms of the level of talent fighting in a single night, and now it’s gone.

If you don’t know what you are talking about don’t talk.
K-1 the promotion is having problems, K-1 is a Japanese company and Kickboxing is primarily a European sport. Just because the one promotion Americans know about is doing poorly does not mean that an entire sport is dying.
K-1 doesn’t have a UFC-level stranglehold on the sport, they are just the guys who helped spread a unified ruleset. The sport has fans, that hasn’t changed, as long as there are fans one promotion serving as a money-laundering scam for the mafia does not mean the sport as a whole is dying.

On a somewhat unrelated side note,
do you ever think there will be a kickboxing promotion with a Muay Thai ruleset (unrestricted clinch, allows elbows/ knees/ spinning strikes), more western scoring principles (objectively weighing strikes, as opposed to disproportionately favoring kicks over punches, and forward movement)? And do you think that such a promotion would ever be able to garner a quality roster of fighters and TV deals in a market like America?
Because that’s my dream right there. I think that kind of product would do incredibly well in America.

Yeah no kidding
I remember Rogan talking once about how he felt a little surprised that kickboxing and muay thai weren’t more popular in North America…because so many of the casual MMA fans just seem to prefer the striking aspect….but boxing is too limited, so something that is sort of ‘full striking’ or at least a lot more complete striking game like kickboxing or MT, one would imagine, would be something those casual fans really get into.
I personally have fallen in love with watching kickboxing, I’ll always prefer the more complete sport of MMA, but kickboxing is fun as hell to watch.

HDNet airs them in the US with some delay, they had the MAX (-70kg) tournament from last month showing on Friday I believe. Really solid field there, one night 8 man tournament with names like Andy Souwer and Artur Kyshenko. They basically have the same rule-set as K-1 and most of the top fighters nowadays.

If u want to search for a positive spin maybe a break might ne good. I know one of the reasons the World Cup and Olympics are so revered is because there is so much time in between. I say shoot for a 12 or 13 grand prix to reignite excitement

Was anyone surprised?
Whoever the new owners of K-1 are, aren’t going to pay out MILLIONS of dollars in owed salaries from an era when they never owned the company just to put on a show that hardly anyone is clamouring for, save for hardcore kickboxing enthusiasts.
God that movie was disappointing.
The opera house scene was the only slightly cool part of GF III. And the first 2 were SO good.

Maybe he'll go the other way
“Jake has been devoting alot of time to improving his striking technique, but Matt Hughes is no joke either. He really battered Renzo Gracie with solid low kicks and punching combinations, as well as dropping Ricardo Almeida with a left hook.”

Is there any reason It's Showtime couldn't take over an anual Grand Prix event?
It’s already kind of an expected event that everyone looks forward to, would draw big names and numbers, I think it’d be a good business decision for It’s Showtime to hold their own, non-co promoted finals tournament annually.
Joe, it looks like the K1-Level Striking, which is ever dangerous, has been finally over come by K1’s new found inability to pay it’s fighters.

The world became a less amazing place on June 18 2011, with the death of Clarence Clemons. R.I.P. Big Man, you will be sorely missed.
