Vancouver is Unlikely to Host a UFC Event in 2012
As a resident of Greater Vancouver, nothing annoys me more than the false idea that the city of Vancouver is interested in hosting MMA events within the city limits. Two UFC events, UFC 115 and UFC 131, have taken place in GM Place. This is true. But the UFC has had to deal with unreasonable demands from the city all the way throughout the process, whether it was asking the promotion to provide ridiculous amounts of insurance, or telling them to pay for an increased police presence, or just plain not supporting the idea in the first place. And to the shock of approximately no one, Tom Wright says the UFC probably won't be coming back to Vancouver in 2012 (via the Canadian Press):
And the disappointing thing for our sport is that after a two-year test period, they've had two tests -- ours," Wright said Wednesday. "Because no other promotion could afford the indemnification or the insurance costs or the other things -- or actually have the perseverance to get an event to be held there.
"Will we go back to Vancouver in time? Yeah. Will it be next year? I doubt it."
The two-year test he's referring to was the city's way of trying to make some coin while not actually passing any real laws. They knew it was up to the provincial government to deal with this sort of thing, so they passed this "test period" to get the UFC into town while avoiding any real push for legislation, and despite their unreasonable demands, the UFC obliged them. Twice. No one else could afford to run shows in the city, and that was by design.
I could write a novel on the situation, but the basic point for Pacific Northwest MMA fans is that UFC isn't coming back to Vancouver any time soon. And with good reason. Should Vancouver be happy and feel lucky they've hosted two UFC events? Maybe. I'm sure New Yorkers aren't feeling much sympathy for us right now. But the fact that the city (and the province) doesn't understand what it's dealing with and despite two passes through the city, it still doesn't get it. They're more concerned with the almightly buck than cultivating anything resembling a sports culture in the city. And they wonder why they're forced to fend off riots.

You mean Edmonton.
Alberta is RIPE for a UFC event, it would sell out in 30 mins.

I feel your pain brother, but there is no worse pain than being an MMA fan in New York. It just doesn’t make sense. With such a long history and rabid fan base in amateur wrestling across the state, and copious amounts of kickboxing cards which take place all month long from Manhattan to Long Island, New York is just a hot bed.
Well, Vancouver's city council obviously sucks hard...
…but Zuffa is more than welcome to send an event back to Edmonton. We had a blast when WEC was in town.
Wouldn’t suurprise me if its a toss-up between Calgary and Edmonton

I really hope that it's one of the two.
It’d be the first event I could drive to. So everyone bitching, my driving range is eight hours. If you live in the USA, you got nothin on this haha.

If they won't come to Vancouver
then I’ll gladly take a road trip to Alberta to see a show. Born and raised in Edmonton until about grade 4. I heard not much has changed though…

I'm just glad I can have chickens in my backyard and all the rioting idiots get off without any charges.
Cause that’s what’s important. Not an annual event that could supply consistent revenue to the city.

Believe me, our provincial govt. is a joke.
False promises and back room scandals. Plus the HST, and Winter Olympics which didn’t help tourism at all, like I predicted (don’t get me wrong I enjoy watching them on tv, can’t pay a thousand dollars to see them in person). Haha, my point is that I’m tired of the BC Liberals.

I didn't get any tickest to any Olympic events
but I got hella drunk for two weeks at the beer tents.
The politicians in this province are spineless cowards. They’re all about the sound bites that make them look good without having to do anything, and getting out of dodge as soon as they can get a decent pension.

Exactly. This Family holiday they're promising for 2013 but not 2012.
Vote the Liberals in again and you get a holiday in 2013!!!

Being almost a fellow Vancouverite- Victoria to be exact, and having attended 131,
I unfortunately agree with your conclusions. It was quite sad to see the governments paranoia about such a profitable sport- I spent a lot of $$$ that weekend- while they completely fail to realize or counteract the riots following hockey, which any true British Columbian knew would take place win or lose. The 131 crowd was absolutely jovial and I didn’t even feel any mere intimidation let alone violence circulating.

Yup, exactly. It makes me sad to be a flag-waving British Columbian. It’s so disappointing they can’t stop pointing the finger in the wrong direction continually.

100% true. The fact that the cops weren’t ready for it was a joke. Everyone and their dog knew there’d be a riot. The only variable was just how big it would be.
Twitter - @pud333 Follow me and I shall lead you to the promised land!
Indeed, it was bigger than I expected perhaps, but the cops were just keeping the rioters, and innocent bystanders, packed right in the war zone!
Definitely minimum preparation on their behalf. I heard a lot of stories from people who couldn’t leave main downtown because they blocked off sky trains and roads, several of them were pepper sprayed more than once.

I know a guy that knows a guy
and there is rumor of TWO UFC cards planned for Alberta in 2012-13.
Vancouver ain’t gettin shit, you can thank your lovely Canuck fans for that, and also the dumb fucks (politicians) who said the riot was caused by UFC fans.
"It is hard to free fools from the chains they revere."
They should hold an event in calgary
There’s lots of money here, several MMA gyms and we consistently have some of the highest PPV buyrates in North America. The Saddledome would be a perfect venue for a UFC show. Plus MMA is, you know, legal here.

Went there for WEC and everywhere and everyone there is just trash

You mean the WEC they were going to have in Calgary but didn't due to lack of interest?
So you had to drive to Edmonton to see it?
Is that the same WEC card you were talking about?

I recently moved from Calgary to Vancouver, and while the city is beautiful, I have noticed a consistent hand in my pocket since the moment I arrived. On the plus though for UFC fans, you can travel down to Seattle for cheap and/or fly to Vegas from there. It’s what I’m doing for GSP/Condit later this month.
It’s funny, I’m a Vancouverite and I honestly don’t care that much about having a UFC in town because I prefer watching it on TV anyway (I’ve attended three UFCs in Vegas). But as a fighter based here it crushes me that the City’s ridiculous stance towards MMA mean that I cannot compete on professional cards here in my own town.
It does suck that the UFC can’t come here, but the worst part is the negative trickle-down effect on grassroots MMA and the development of the sport at the lower levels.
