Breaking Down the Official UFC Undisputed 3 Roster: Lightweights and Light Heavyweights
The third installment to the popular MMA video game, UFC Undisputed is set to be released on January, and the guys at THQ are beginning to reveal their official roster. They will also be having a PRIDE mode where you can get nostalgic as you brutally stomp and kick your over-matched opponents, although sadly, this list they have just released are for their UFC fighters only.
So, who are the new additions? Who have been snubbed? Here's a complete breakdown of the official roster for the light heavyweight and lightweight divisions for UFC Undisputed 3:
Who are the notable snubs on this latest roster? Check out after the jump.
The lightweights:
8 additions from last year's roster, with the most notable ones being Jim Miller, and the guys coming from the UFC-WEC merger (Pettis, Bendo, Cerrone).
12 fighters have been removed with most of them have either been released from the promotion, or have changed divisions (Sanchez, Florian, Griffin, Diaz?)
Notable snubs:
Nate Diaz - Currently ranked #14 in the lightweight division. He was in last year's roster, but moved up to welterweight, and just recently dropped back down to lightweight where he drubbed Takanori Gomi. He might just be on the WW roster, but if not, Diaz is a one of the most notable snubs in the game.
Rafael Dos Anjos - Currently Ranked #16 in the lightweight division, and recently knocked out George Sotiropoulos who is a new addition to the roster.
Joe Lauzon - He was on last year's roster, so it doesn't make much sense why he's not in the game anymore. Now that he recently had a big win over Melvin Guillard, maybe the developers should consider putting him back in the game.
Gleison Tibau and Matt Wiman - Both guys are ranked in the top 25 in the world, although they're not as popular to the casual fans as the other fighters in the roster, so it is understandable.
Cole Miller - He's on last year's roster, and his only loss in the past 2 years was from fellow snubbed fighter, Matt Wiman.
The Light Heavyweights:
4 new additions from last year's roster with the most notable being Mr. Wonderful and Lil' Nog.
6 fighters from last year's roster that were removed, with most of them have either been released from the promotion (Jardine, and Coleman), or is on ugly losing streaks (Cane, Cantwell).
Notable Snubs:
Randy Couture - The UFC Hall-of-Famer also wasn't on last year's roster, from that whole issue with his rights being signed to the guys at EA MMA.
Alexander Gustafsson - He's been tearing up a bunch of light heavyweights, and recently earned his #15 ranking in the light heavyweight standings.
Krzysztof Soszynski and Stephan Bonnar - Neither guy are on the top of the division, although both guys were on last year's roster, and both guys are enjoying 2-fight winning streaks. Bonnar has always been mentioned as a staple in the UFC, so it's a bit weird how they decided not to include him in the game.
Stanislav Nedkov - He just recently cracked the top 25 with his win over Luiz Cane, so while the guy has talent, it is understandable that he wasn't added on the roster just yet.

There are....
This list doesn’t include Pride fighters and fighters who are in multiple weight classes. A few of the guys listed above have not been removed from the game, they just haven’t been announced yet because they fight in multiple divisions.
Guessing
Coleman is on the PRIDE roster
Florian, Sanchez, (and hopefully Diaz) are pretty much sure that they’re just in other divisions. Maybe even Griffin. That’s safe to assume right?

A pretty safe assumption...
Can confirm any individual names though
that's understandable.
Thanks for the insight and the comments on this… I also think I know which guy from THQ you are. Awesome mustache guy right? haha ;)

Yep! The moustache is currently dormant right now though (biding it’s time, waiting to make a comeback)
haha.
It’s pretty cool that you’re making time to speak with us here in BE…
PS: I know that it’s hard for Zuffa and THQ to decide several months in advance on which dude is likely to have a good year, but I still wish you guys kept Lauzon.

I’m on BE daily so you’ll probably see me posting on pages related to the game more often.
As for Joe, I will say that there is still hope for fighters not on our official roster to be included as DLC…
They haven't put out decent dlc for the other two games

DLC
Our DLC plan is much better this year. We can’t say who is part of our DLC plan, but a couple of the guys that people think are missing are part of our DLC plan.
Why plan them for DLC?
Just put them in the real game and stop trying to milk extra cash out of us for stuff that you should have in your original package.

We have over 150 fighters in the game...
We’re giving you a bigger roster than basically any fighting game has ever had. There are always going to be guys we can’t get into the game in time for launch. Each fighter takes 4 months to model and get implemented into the game. DLC is our way of giving you fighters that you otherwise would’ve never had.
You promise?
I swear if you guys release a bunch of guys for DLC on launch day, I’m gonna hold you to this post.

Mayhem, Stann, Diaz n Phil Davis are available launch day but only if you preorder from Gamestop.

Are created fighters the same this year as far as the way the face and hair and body and everything is made or will it be different this year?
THQ has lied both years about dlc.

Gustafsson missing is really pissing me off. I mean come on, you’re really going to throw Diabate and Matyushenko in there as new additions, but no Gustafsson? That is BS. They still have Brilz on there for crying out loud. Really lame.
I agree, it’s effin retarded that Gustafsson isn’t in there. Dude could be a serious competitor sooner rather than later.

But...
Before he beat Matt Hamill he was kind of flying under the radar. By the time he became a top 15 fighter we had our roster completed. Sometimes it’s tough to guess who is going to have a good year and we work with Zuffa to make a judgement call on who we think will be relevant when the game comes out.
Okay, yeah, I guess. I understand that it’s probably more Zuffa’s fault than THQ, I just think it’s a real stupid decision. It’s kind of a recurring impression that they aren’t very good at understanding which prospects to promote properly or not, and this is a prime example of that.
He has a fight coming up in december against Matyushenko by the way, so by the time this game comes out there is a real good chance he’s 5-1 in the UFC and having beat three fighters currently in the game (Maty, Hamill, Diabate). Just saying.

Well
Although there isn’t enough improvement in the graphics and they’re still using the same engine, the gameplay looks quite alot better with more urgency in the finishing area. Also one thing that really annoyed me in 2010 was the only-overhands-Leanord Garcia- style of standup fighting, it looks like that’s gonna be less so in this game. It’s still way too much of a wild brawl, but atleast you can throw effective straight punches instead of using only hooks.

I hate EA Sports and damn near everything they churn out these days
UFC needs to work with the 2K Sports guys. You see the shit that they put in NBA 2K12?
I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.
It's not terrible
But it feels just as arcade-like as UFC Undisputed.
I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.
I disagree
It feels much more accurate to the sport in my opinion.
The blood wiping all over the shorts and body parts.. the stamina that you have to conserve.. the realistic looking knockouts.. the damage that leg kicks do..
feeled more like a simulation to me.. not just a “keep throwing haymakers until eventually someone randomly falls over” type of game.
It was slightly more realistic but I found the control scheme incredibly frustrating and it looked so damn lethargic. It just pissed me off.

You know
It did have 2 control schemes. I found the classic controls to be very easy to use.
I know they had 2 schemes. It just didn’t work for me though. It’s a very subjective thing, because I do understand why you’d like EA better than Undisputed.

The analog striking
Seems to be a love it or hate it thing. EA has been using it for the Fight Night games for a while and I absolutely love it, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
With a little practice I felt like it became very intuitive and can pull off some stunning combos in MMA or Fight Night.
"Another set of scars to boast"
The best thing about EA MMA is that
I can actually tap out another fighter without having like Werdum against Slice and 4 rounds of wearing him out. But the cap on special moves is bull shit and it needs more styles
"We will be perfect in every aspect of the game. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You fumble the football and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hind parts...and then you will run a mile. Perfection. Let's get to work."
Coach Boone
Remember The Titans [2000]
mg has it right
Striking and managing stamina takes more effort in EA MMA and the way KOs are handled is MUCH more realistic. In Undisputed nearly every KO is someone being knocked cold by a random punch but in EA’s game you usually rock the other fighter and pound them out for the TKO.
The blood and cut effects in EA MMA are the best in ANY fighting game.
"Another set of scars to boast"
That right there
Pretty much sums up my thoughts.
I used to play UFC a lot too so I am not trying to be biased one way or another.
Just in my opinion, one game is far superior and this post sums up a lot of why I think that.
EA is where it’s at for soccer, hockey & football sports simulations. I hate how NBA2K flows … The players feel like robots. It’s not free flowing. I even used to love MVP Baseball before playing MLB The Show.

I played 2K11
And it was pretty much my first introduction to basketball. I have always been interested in the sport but knew very little when it came to having in depth knowledge of the game itself.
I’ve just picked up 2K12 and for all it has minor flaws, the look and presentation of the game is inrcredible. I’ve never seen such an in-depth sports game when it comes to making you think you’re watching/taking part in the real thing. Everything from the intro’s to the HT reports, very very impressive. It is also the best sports game i’ve ever played as far as commentary is concerned, hands down. Bar slight repetition you wouldn’t realise it was a video game if you were merely listening as opposed to watching.
"Honestly, I've got nothing against Josh Koscheck personally........but the guy's just a dickhead"-Paul Daley
I’ve never played the game so I’m not sure how accurate the character movements/detail is but, I don’t even understand while they felt the need to remove ANYONE other than fighters who have left the promotion?
Space can’t be the problem because how can the game even be that big? The environments are tiny…
I wish they could have just kept in guys like Uno and Coleman as legends or something
I know both compete in other organizations (Coleman is trying to anyway), but Pulver and Severn were still active outside the UFC and they were in the 2010 game.
Don't count Coleman out yet...
We have a Pride specific roster that will be released at a later date.
Will that include fighters that were never zuffa fighters? E.g. Sakuraba?

by Thomas Benjamin on Oct 14, 2011 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions
they only did that if you accepted the "legends fight" request in 2010
not to mention that is a problem that doesn’t stem from actually having Coleman in the game. It’s just poor design.
I don’t mean career title defense. I meant the actual defense mode. You don’t get to pick who you fight (which is, ofcourse, realistic) and for some reason I always have to fight guys who are no longer in the UFC. It also stems from the fact that despite all their promises, THQ doesn’t modify the roster. EVER.
by Thomas Benjamin on Oct 14, 2011 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions
The size of each division’s roster so far is pretty … weak. It creates a problem for the Career mode because your fighter, at least in the last Undisputed, has very slow stat development and you move up through the rankings too quickly to fairly compete with the higher-rated guys at the top of each division.
Also, there are a lot of WTF decisions here when it comes to which fighters are being included and left out. This already has the whiff of another subpar product.

We all do.
It would have sold like crazy if it had the UFC roster.
FYI
Anyone who is planning to get this game should consider preordering through Gamestop, because you get a free 4-pack of DLC fighters: Phil Davis, Mayhem, Stann and Nick Diaz.
it’s total bullshit those guys aren’t in the core game anyway, and Gamestop is evil, etc., but I imagine lots of people will want these fighters.
"Another set of scars to boast"
Yeah
All those fighters should be free – that is garbage.
Stann and Davis were two guys we didn’t get in early enough to be in the full game, but didn’t want to deprive you of. Mayhem and Diaz haven’t even fought in the UFC yet, so it’s not like they’ve been around and we totally forgot about them. Again, we put them as a pre-order so you’d at least have the option of playing as these guys…
I've been on the "Gamestop is evil" bandwagon for years.
But after the Deus Ex disaster I’m actually going to put my money where my mouth is. They won’t be getting one thin dime from me and hopefully THQ will relent or the hackers can figure something else out.
by The so-called Beautiful on Oct 14, 2011 6:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
DLC? In theory it allows a game to be sold for a longer period of time (even though the developer is never going to see a dime with Gamestop’s business model). The only problem is that it’s not free, so you feel cheated you spent $60 on a game that’s not even really complete.
Worst case scenario? You end up paying a shitload of money on downloadable missions and such, then a new version of the game comes out with all the downloadable content on the disc. That way you can play the DLC even if you don’t have the original hardware you downloaded it on.
Paying for DLC is bullshit and I refuse to ever do it.
by discoandherpes on Oct 14, 2011 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions
That was one of my biggest pet peeves about the last Undisputed. I think that game used an accelerated clock and STILL every fight would end with a vicious, out-cold KO by the end of the second round.
I’ve always wondered whether that was an oversight or an intentional choice by someone who was terrified the game wouldn’t sell without nonstop KOs. I have no interest in buying this new game if that’s going to be the case again.
"Another set of scars to boast"
Then you're going to want to play with Simulation Stamina settings
This setting makes it so you gas out a lot easier, can’t be countered as much, but have the ability to make some crazy comebacks. We brought in some hardcore community members to check a couple things out and when we played with them on this setting we were having 5 round WARS go to decision (after each of us rocked each other numerous times, sometimes in the first round).
We’ll be doing a video detailing what this setting entails. I’ll be sure to post it on BE when we finish it.

I've played a lot of UFC 09 and 2010
You’re looking to much into this one video. Both people playing said that it would be stand up only so there’s no takedown threat to make you more reserved with your striking. Another reason this fight ends in a KO in round 2 is because they’re throwing bombs nonstop, and if you’re winding up a big shot and get hit with one instead you take extra damage, making it more likely that you get rocked.

I'm the new Community Manager for Undisputed
I can confirm that weak strikes interrupt strong strikes and allow you to set up quicker combinations, and we have a simulation stamina mode that definitely changes the way the game plays out to cater to a more hardcore audience. Cage humping, cage resetting and all of the exploits from last year are gone. We brought in 6 of the best players from 2010 to test for exploits in the new game and try to see if they could find any new ones and they were unable to find anything major. The little things they did find are being adjusted currently. Overall the game is MUCH more balanced this year.

From what I understand the DLC isn’t GS exclusive, when I first saw it, I was pissed because I thought it was BestBuy exclusive (I buy pretty much only from GS bc my girl works there). So I’m pretty sure its just pre order exclusive and will be added to the PSN Store a while after release.
Shamownage explained Gustaffson, and I’d say Barboza fits in the same boat. Lauzon I dont understand at all.
:p - orcus

Who says it’s not GS exclusive? That’s what Pasta Padre said, and I’ve always trusted him. Obviously, he could be wrong, but it still doesn’t make sense for such a prominent fighter to be a bonus. Bonuses are things that don’t “need” to be in the game. Couture, Liddell, etc.
I sincerely hope Gustaffson and Barboza are DLC, but I don’t quite understand it, other than obviously, a monetary standpoint. I don’t want to pay extra for a fighter they already own the license to. Putting in Barboza is not anything extra for them, it’s not a new license they have to acquire: they own him and the ability to put him in and are not doing it. It’s not like new content that was developed after the game was made (they’ve had plenty of time on this release schedule), and it’s not something they need license for, like a new car on Forza Motorsport.
In short … I understand the reason (monetary), but I don’t support it, so I probably won’t be buying this game. I know that doesn’t matter to anybody else here, but I guess I feel better by saying it.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it. ... Always a ninja

The undisputed site quotes it as "preorder exclusive" with no mention of GS
As far as having the preorder bonus, I kinda agree that it should be in the game, but preorder bonuses are becoming very common, so I don’t think you can hold that against THQ.
Shamownage talked about it above and on the undisputed forums. Basically when creating the characters/roster, they worked with Zuffa on deciding who would be put in and guys like Gustaffson/Barboza were skipped over as they hadn’t really made a claim in their divisions yet or some such.
He also insists they have plans for DLC releases, I agree with you here, I don’t really like having to pay more for extra fighters after the fact. But again DLC is part of modern gaming.

Yeah but … a lot of the preorder bonuses are stupid things. An in-game shirt, an in-game gun that isn’t that great. Here’s a guy who’s a win or two away from a title shot.
The thing about their explanation of Barboza/Gustaffson … it’s my opinion that they’ve done plenty. It’s just the no-licensing issues that bug me a lot. Ugh. I dunno, I’ll evaluate this game when it gets closer. Might Gamefly it, but they’re not getting my money directly, that’s for sure.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it. ... Always a ninja

I've loved both games, so I'm definitely getting it
I get your point tho and can’t really hold that against you.

Looks like you're right about GS
Joystiq.com says the fighters are GS and EB only, but other places have their own preorder bonuses.

Stephens, Lauzon & Nate Diaz should be in the lightweights. Gomi should just be in as a Pride legend. Not sure why Stevenson is still in the game?
As for the light-heavies, Bonnar and Gustaffson should’ve been locks. I’m sure we could’ve done without Brilz & Hamill. I don’t mind Vera or Diabate being in, but they are strange inclusions.
Granted I’m not the biggest undisputed fan…. But the only reason this fight ended in a KO was because these guys went all out STAND N BANG for the entirety of the fight. This would have went to a decision easy if they played with even an ounce of caution. I’m fairly impressed with the video. If guillard and Pettis went balls to the wall like that in real life, someone would have definitely been KO’ed, probably even before round 2.

Did they fix
the submission problem in this game cause I swear to god if I’m playing BJ and god damn Clay Guida gets me with a gogoplata or some whack ass armbar outta nowhere i might break my PS3 in frustration
"We will be perfect in every aspect of the game. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You fumble the football and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hind parts...and then you will run a mile. Perfection. Let's get to work."

The submission system...
is completely different this year. It’s graphic based so you know exactly when and why you are getting submitted.
