Bellator Announces Eddie Alvarez Vs. Michael Chandler For Mid-November

Photo

While some fans may malign Bellator for its lack of champions actually defending their titles, the promotion announced Thursday that Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez will put his title on the line in mid-November against Michael Chandler.

Alvarez (22-2) will face Chandler (8-0) in the main event of Bellator 58 on November 19th in Hollywood, FL -- a fight that was originally scheduled for this Saturday but was delayed to an Alvarez injury.

Chandler earned the title shot by winning Bellator's Season 4 lightweight tournament, beating Patricky Freire by unanimous decision in May. Alvarez last competed in April in the first defense of his gold, besting Pat Curran in a unanimous decision. He carries a seven-fight win streak into the event.

In the co-main event, Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard faces Trevor Prangley in a non-title fight announced last week. Jessica Aguilar vs. Lisa Ward and Marlon Sandro vs. Rafael Dias round out the main card.

Chandler is a great prospect, and he reminds me of a young Sean Sherk. However, his multiple groin shots to Patricky Freire really illustrate his relative inexperience to MMA. While the upset is possible, I do feel that this fight is too much, too soon for Chandler, similar to Pat Curran.

I feel like Chandler has an outside shot to beat Alvarez, but like you said, too much. I expect great things from him as well. I’ve been very impressed.

One of the years best cards for Bellator, better hope Zuffa does not counter this.

Um, November 19th is UFC 139

Henderson vs Shogun
Wanderlei vs Le
Faber vs Bowles
Kampmann vs Story
Bonnar vs Kingsbury

That’s also the pay per view that they will likely be plugging on the Fox card the week before.

Yeah, Saturday was a horrible day to pick

I mean, I’m sure they get solid amount of DVRs and more then a few re-run watchers.

But going up against the UFC on the same day keeps them out of most of the headlines, and keeps most people not watching them…and those two things fuel one another, people don’t see them in the headlines so fewer people watch, which leads to less headlines being written about them.

They have virtually no hopes of growing their audiance with this schedule. Sure, there are the few weeks when the UFC isn’t doing shows, but from September 17th to October 8th, 4 weekends straight of UFC programming. Then from October 29th to November 19th, another 4 straight weeks of UFC programming.

Sorry, I am just tired of seeing Lombard crushing cans in Bellator. Do not tell me that Prangley stands any chance in this fight. Jay Silva stood a chance? Herbert Goodman? Come on..

I said it before, I'll say it again.

Eddie Alvarez has every right to hang out in Bellator, beating fighters way worse than he should be facing. He can make his money that way just fine.

But he shouldn’t be expected to be taken seriously in the LW picture, and he should start losing his LW ranking as fighters like Bendo, Guida, Pettis, Miller etc are facing legit top 15/20 fighters every fight.

The winner of Bendo/Guida is pushing him out of top 5, guaranteed.

Yes that point is that good. Eddie needs to stop wasting the prime of his career in the minor leagues. He’s better than most of the ufc LWs.

Why should he take less money to fight in the UFC?

They won’t pay him what Bellator will.

do they know that the 100k has already been paid? How about the massive bump in sponsor pay?

Guida has never beaten any top level fighter.

His best win is Pettis, who hasn’t beaten a proven talent ever. Clay lost to Diego (washed out of LW) and Kenny Florian (washed out of LW). Jim Miller still hasn’t beaten a top 20 fighter himself.

I said eventually. Is he top 5 now? Maybe/probably. But be shouldn’t be given much credit for beating Michael Chandler, and eventually, he’ll drop. Eventually, solely because he is not facing top 25 fighters.

Who has Alvarez beaten to deserve a top 5 ranking? Especially since 2009? I’ll buy that Guida should be ranked ahead of him.

And Eddie Alvarez's best win in the last 3 years is Josh Neer

his last fight against a legitimate top 10-15 opponent he got heel-hooked in under 2 minutes.

What’s your point here?

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.

It is going to happen

Melendez will soon be in the UFC.

I imagine the top 3 spots will still be Edgar, Melendez, then Maynard…If Maynard loses, then I imagine whoever beats him jumps ahead, but I don’t believe that would automatically just drop him below Alvarez and Aoki.

Aoki was #2 at one point…so yeah, them slowly falling in the rankings is just bound to happen.

Look at it this way, even if they spend their ENTIRE careers ‘defying Zuffa’ if you will, they won’t keep winning forever, everyone loses eventually.
