UFC 137 Video: George St. Pierre Believes He'll Stop Carlos Condit

We're a few short weeks away from UFC 137 and the return of welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre to the cage. St. Pierre will face off with the dangerous Carlos Condit in a title fight in the main event of that show with his next challenger possibly being decided in the co-main event fight of the card between Nick Diaz and B.J. Penn.

The promo videos for the card are ramping up with the latest entry on the UFC YouTube page being a brief interview with Georges St. Pierre:

From the video:

I'm going to have to deal with a guy who has knockout power, very technical striker and a great ground game as well. Unpredictable fighter. I've seen a lot of improvement in Carlos' game but I believe I'm a more improved fighter than Carlos is. I have a game plan to take care of Carlos and I will execute it. He's not my friend and I don't put any emotion in but I believe I will have the key to victory. I do believe I will be able to knock him out or submit him. I will remain the welterweight champion.

Keep your browser locked in to Bloody Elbow for more information as we head toward this big night of action.

having said that, I think Condit will be in his face and does provide a more legitimate challenge in all areas than some of his previous challengers, so I predict Condit to take Fitch-levels of punishment without going away quietly and to last the 5 rounds.

I should know better but I'm really starting to buy that Condit can win.

not a perfect scorecard though

he didn’t call him the most dangerous opponent he’s ever faced.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

Don’t worry. A UFC promo will mention that.

Just like before the Hughes-Koscheck fight i heard on the radio a commerical that stated Koscheck will be Hughes greatest test so far.

Does the UFC think we are retarded or something?

but dude has a hard time staying off his back and GSP is the best fighter in the UFC in getting a fighter down and keeping them there.

He took the “avoid Fitch and Koscheck on the way to the title” route popularized by Hardy

GSP can definitely put Condit on his butt

I also believe GSP can stop him via ground and pound (T)KO.

Go GSP. Make it happen!

I am also fine with another 5 round fight. Carlos is an exciting fighter and GSP is a technical wonder to watch inside the cage.

As soon as GSP finishes Condit we can call Jose Aldo Mr. Decision. (Ha!)

I have a good feeling about this one.

I have had a strong albeit unfair dislike for GSP since he beat Thiago Alves at 100. I know he is a great fighter and all of that jargon but I still always bet against him. I am a big Carlos Condit fan and I think he will be able to pull it off. As long as Condit doesn’t get freaked out by GSP like so many others have done and continually pressures him then I think he could take this.

I’m predicting TKO to crown a new champ!! Finally. :0)

Condit will finish GSP on the 29th.

IT’s his time. GSP is too comfortable where he is, he needs a fire lit under his ass, and that’s what Condit is going to do.

no desire to see GSP fight any more. having left his previous 3 fights to get my car in the parking lot, he’s going to have to do something amazing for me to tolerate the drunk crowd at the bar while watching him coast for 5 rds. i’m only semi-interested in Condit or Diaz in fighting GSP b/c THEY will attempt to make a fight. Shields, Hardy, Koscheck….masterful fights by GSP or whatever, they were boring as f***. If I wanted to watch someone jab for 5 rounds, i’d watch boxing. if i wanted to watch a grappling match, i’ll watch the ADCC.

It’s mixed martial arts. is it too much to ask that the champion of the 170 lb class try to finish a fight?

That was the only one of his recent fights I didn’t enjoy, but I give him a pass because I think Shields was intentionally going for the eye poke in that fight.

This doesn't seem like a competitive fight to me...

Condit’s has a massive glaring hole in his game in take down defence. Sure he’s great at sweeping people and regaining better position but I just don’t see him being able to do that against GSP at all. Also, when was the last time we saw GSP even remotely close to being subbed when he’s been in top position? With that said, I don’t believe GSP will finish him, but he’ll likely put on a dominating performance (a la BJ 2 or Fitch) again.

Condit’s stand up is tight but it’s really being overrated because he knocked out Hardy (overrated striker) and Kim (awful stand up). He throws a lot of reckless stuff, which makes for an entertaining fight but GSP is too technical on the feet, too elusive and going to make Condit pay (see Ellenberger fight).

I'm excited to see someone that isn't afraid of St. Pierre

Condit doesn’t buy into the “don’t fight teammates” BS, didn’t quit when he was getting absolutely trucked by McDonald, and apparently, burst into tears when Dana told him he was fighting for the title. He seems to have singular drive that others don’t, and I love that about him.

I think we’re about to see a kid that is going to go out there to win every second of that fight, and I can’t help pulling for him because of it.

Noticed he isn’t even promising it anymore, just that he believes he will lol. The last sentence is the most realistic – he will remain welterweight champion. 5 round decision.

Condit stands a a far better chance than Diaz just because he has power in his strikes.
And am I the only one who finds it nuts that Condit has only won by decision once in his entire career? He’s stopped everyone except Ellenberger.

To me it's not even about the boringness of the guy.

I’m just tired of his nice guy act despite not being that good of a fighter. I’d hoping Condit busts his chops so we can get a new WW champ, and GSP can climb the ladder again. Maybe throw him the BJ? After BJ knees the shit out of Diaz’s chin of course.

Would any of you want to get knocked out?

I think GSP wants to have a long, healthy career. I can understand why he would take the safe route to a string of title defenses. I mean, who wants to end up like Roy Jones Jr?

Say what you may about Condit’s chances, him getting fitched or w/e…. But I really don’t believe GSP is going to outstrike him. Condit has shown that he is pretty good at letting his strikes go even under the threat of the takedown. I actually kind of like his chances of winning…. I’ll probably think that statement is ridiculous after the fight.

Does Condit not realize he’s going to be facing the best GSP theres ever been? George has never said that before. (Ok, who am I kidding? Of course he’s going to say that. He says it before every fight).

by DerSpiegel on Oct 13, 2011 7:01 PM EDT reply actions

I love Condit. No one loves him more than me. But frankly it seems a bit lucky that he got the title. Getting past Penn would’ve been no gimme, in fact I’d go with Penn. Fitch and Kos also would have my money. It didn’t really look like he was dominating his matches with any of his recent wins until he landed his (insert mma move here). He was getting worked by Rory Mac until he turned it on at the very end with that extra gear that only he knows. But that ain’t gonna work against a seasoned vet like GSP, who has destroyed the destroyers (Fitch, Alves, Kos).
I’d love for the magic to continue, but I think it runs out on this one. Really glad to see him in a title match though. Despite his luck, he deserves it.
