No fucking way...
He has 2 fights in the last 2 years, with the only relevant win coming over Aoki more than 18 months ago. That doesn’t make him the rightful contender, at all. It’s a farce that people actually believe his recent record should allow him to step into a title fight immediately.

Kawajiri had no business being in the top 10 at the time of that fight...
He was near the end of the top 10 before facing Aoki and he got soundly outclassed. A win over Josh Thomson shouldn’t get him right back into it.
Why not?
In the last four years, he’s been very active and beat everyone except the #3, #4, and #5 LWs.
He doesn’t lose to anyone but the elite, which you can’t say of half the UFC lightweights ranked ahead of him right now.

The last couple of years have shown that having success outside the UFC doesn’t equate to having success in it (Shields, Santiago, probably Diaz, Overeem and Hendo too) but I still think Gil would beat Edgar

Everyone thinks any champion from any other weight class could beat Edgar. Everyone thinks Aldo could beat him as well. I guess he just isn’t any good.
"He's got a great package... and an unusual one!" Joe Rogan (of Lyoto Machida)
I, for one, don't think Melendez is the favorite
However, in my mind he’s the smallest underdog of all the lightweights.

I think Gil has the wrestling to hang with Edgar and probably take him down too. He also has better boxing offensive (although not defence) and if he catches Frankie he will finish him
