True nuff

I’ve had the honour of training with Braulio and the man is truly exceptional, both as a competitor and teacher. As always, Georges is training with the right people at the right time

Travis Lutter is not the Michael Jordan of BJJ

They would also submit GSP in 30 seconds. What’s your point?

by MMABookworm on Jan 9, 2011 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

You honestly don't see any point?

GSP is training with Braulio.

Shields is training with Nate Diaz.

Who’s gonna make you better on the ground?

Koscheck has frosted tips.

by disinferno06 on Jan 9, 2011 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not missing the point. I’m responding solely to that particular comment, regarding improvement on the ground. As for improving striking, Jake is in Thailand at Tiger to improve that

As for improving striking, Jake is in Thailand at Tiger to improve that

And he still looks terrible on his feet from what we’ve seen.

That is

completely true haha. Watch the video of the Thai instructor telling him to throw a kick, or to jab then block a kick. He looks like someone who’s on their first week of classes. It’s amazing how terrible it is. However, he is trying, for whatever that’s worth

by disinferno06 on Jan 9, 2011 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I give him credit for that, but I don’t think that camp of his has good enough full-time strikers or striking coaches to train with. Him going to Thailand at this point in his striking development is like a teenager who has had their license for a year going to Germany to drive with an F1 team. He’s just not far enough along to make the most of it.

I think there is so underrating of Shields grappling ability

vids of GSP and Shields against Leo Santos, multiple time BJJ world champ at 2005 ADCC

GSP:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCLoV40jDKM

Shields:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hx2waUvSM1s&feature=related

Shields won a Pan Am as a purple belt and has bronze medal from ADCC, he is a legit international level grappler. Now it hasn’t translated fully to MMA and GSP is an elite MMA grappler, but if this match ends up being a no gi grappling match Shields is dangerous.

by T.P. Grant on Jan 9, 2011 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

Shields has 11 submissions in MMA – I’d say his skill translated over to MMA. He’s also tooled guys bigger than him on the ground.

I would actually put Shields as #2 WW in the world right now.

by MMABookworm on Jan 9, 2011 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

the thing is, he’s probably going to be staying there.

by hewsdaddy on Jan 9, 2011 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Somewhat dubious

You’re right. Shields is very, very good, and his submission of Santos was probably (if there were betting lines) a sizable upset. In GSP’s case, I’m not sure the Santos video shows much, other than it’s always possible to get caught. At the time of his match with Santos, GSP was a purple belt. That same tournament he beat Otto Olson, who placed 2nd to Marcelo Garcia in a prior ADCC. Not too shabby. I actually think GSP would beat Shields in a grappling match. His wrestling and guard passing are world class and Shields is nothing special from his back.

Judging by how GSP performed against Kos after training with Roach

I’m going to say that GSP spends the entire fight taking Jake down and then doing a basic but underutilized guard pass followed by not much else. GSP fanboys will break their fingers on their keyboards trying to convince everyone that it’s the single most impressive display of MMA technique ever seen.

Even if Shields doesn’t win I hope he has a good showing. Hey man

Jake may have better submissions and control on the ground, but in terms of takedown offense Kos > Shields any day. I think it will be very difficult for Jake to take GSP down given that he has no high level standup game to mix up with his wrestling. At least Kos had the punching power to make GSP think twice.

GSP has to be prepared for the worst.

Also, don’t underestimate Jake’s takedowns. Just because he doesn’t hit big power doubles where he drives guys across the cage and slams them does not mean he has poor takedowns. A simple single-leg where he turns the corner and gently drags his opponent to the ground is just as effective. His takedowns may not be flashy, but they always seem to get the job done.

Exactly! Shields is one of those guys that everyone looks at as overrated at first glance, but just because he isn’t flashy, doesn’t mean he isn’t highly effective.

GSP’s freaky athleticism helps him so much on the ground – put Shields’ grappling skills and mind in GSP’s or Askren’s bodies and you have a true monster…

Kos' high level stand-up is an overhand right, and as far as mixing it with his wrestling

he doesn’t. Simple as that. If anything Shields is more likely to get GSP down because he doesn’t have any delusions that he can hack it on the feet and thus he won’t give Georges as much of an opportunity to rearrange his facial structure before he grabs onto a leg.

OHHHHH! OH MY GOODNESS DID YOU SEE THAT?! He ran up the wall like a ninja and landed a high kick! Unbelievable! I've never seen anything like that, it's like something out of a movie!

This

Also, Shields is tenacious in chasing the takedowns and was prepared to take shots from Henderson (he had to, he had no other option) to get at takedown; he’ll do the same against GSP. And Shields is probably the biggest MMA submission threat St. Pierre has faced since Hughes, so it makes sense to be prepared to deal with the very worst.

One thing GSP has that Hendo doesn't:

The clinch.

If Shields comes inside against Hendo, he has no fear of the big looping “I’m too old to bend” overhand right hurting him in close and can go to work. But against GSP, ‘inside’ is knees and elbows, throws and cagegrinding.

Shields needs to get inside to get GSP down, but just as Georges can hurt you badly from the outside (Kos), he’s also a mean dog on the inside (Penn).

Koscheck has frosted tips.

This is quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever read on BE.

The Olympic Greco guy has no clinch game?

Hilarious.

by Steve4192 on Jan 9, 2011 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Yes.

All the time.

Hendo’s bread & butter his entire career has been in the clinch. Saying he has no clinch game is absolutely insane and anyone who says it must have started watching him right around UFC 100.

by Steve4192 on Jan 9, 2011 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Even at UFC 100 Hendo brutalised Bisping in the clinch for the brief moment they were there. Bisping even initialised it IIRC and wanted nothing to do with it from there on out.

by MMAussie on Jan 9, 2011 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, and conversely a big part of GSP’s effectiveness in the clinch against Penn was that Penn was constantly defending the potential takedown which left him vulnerable to strikes. But GSP does not throw many knees, never throws standing elbows and in general is not an Anderson Silva-type wrecking machine in close. Besides which if it gets that close I suspect Shields will be willing to pull guard.

There’s no doubt that GSP knows what he is doing to get better! Training boxing with Freddy Roach, now some jiu jitsu with two of the world’s best. With Shield’s striking that is as relevant as Aoki’s,lol! GSP should take it!

by melzui on Jan 9, 2011 11:08 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

My thoughts exactly

Unlike Lesnar (came from the top of my head, not fighting obviously), GSP gets the best in the world in a certain martial art and trains his ass off with them. Kos’ eye was fucked up because of him training w/ Freddie roach for his boxing and now he gets 2 of the best BJJ players on the planet. He should work on his defensive wrestling some too. Shouldnt be a problem but he still wants to keep it standing.

by rockyman500 on Jan 9, 2011 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

He should next work on finishing fights. I wonder who he could train with for that? Heh..

Should have been easier to finish then.

If the doctor had done his job, the fight would have been stopped. I don’t get this trivial insistence on “finishing” a fight. The fact that a guy made it to the bell =/= lay n’ pray or boring fights. He destroyed Kos and Fitch, and I think those were far more dominating and exciting performances than if he had managed to get a late sub on Dan Hardy (though I like the Hardy fight). Go watch Cro Cop vs. Mir again, that should leave you satisfied.

I admire and respect fighters more who put themselves in the pocket, and while they may leave themselves vulnerable they go in there looking to finish their opponents. I love how Fedor and Anderson have made a living doing this.

by Stroma on Jan 10, 2011 2:11 AM EST up reply actions

The man stood right in front of Fitch, Alves and Koscheck, got in there and took Hardy down at will. He stands in the pocket as much as anyone else. Its not his fault guys like Kos and Fitch and Hardy lack the requisite skills to truly make it interesting.

I agree with you on guys who stay in the pocket, I respect those kinds of fighters more than any other, but that criticism doesn’t apply to GSP, not recently, not ever.

Well, the lack of damage against Hardy was GSP’s fault, as he was too deadset on getting a sub.

But you’re totally right about Fitch, Alves, and Koscheck. He was staying in the pocket far more than Silva does.

Anderson is one of the best pure strikers in all of MMA, he has just been fortunate to be in the division that is arguable the weakest overall, and certainly the weakest in terms of elite MMA Wrestlers – his kryptonite…

As for Fedor, his foolhardy tendency to want to engage in an opponents strength just came back to bite him in the ass – and will again, should he behave so recklessly going forward…

When was the last time Anderson stayed in the pocket?

He only recently did it against a slow and predictable Forrest after he already dropped him. Other than that, we haven’t seen Silva stay in the pocket since what, the Franklin fights?

GSP and Fedor are the ones that will always attack an opponent, don’t need a handpicked opponent to bring the fight to him (and even that isn’t enough, as we saw with Silva-Maia), and don’t get their offense primarily from counterstriking. They attack an opponent on his back and proactively prevent the disasters we’ve seen in some Silva fights.

I’m really interested in seeing if Shields can get GSP down. I’m thinking he won’t be able to, and GSP tries to keep it standing and tries to maul him.

by Dooda on Jan 9, 2011 1:51 PM EST reply actions

I don’t even think Shields can get into a clinch with GSP, let alone a takedown. He’s too slow and GSP is too fast.

BJ did win his weight at mundials 10+ years ago which is an impressive feat – no taking that away from him. However, Roger and Braulio ahve down this several times over and also in the absolute division. Not to mention their combined accomplishments in the ADCC tournaments – which BJ never even participated in.

I don’t think BJ would dominate grappling/bjj tournaments in 2011 the way he did in the 90’s. The sport has evolved.

-550

I feel like Shields is better than -550 but he’s such an awesome stylistic match up for GSP that it’s hard to see GSP losing this. Shields’ best chance is to train like mad with Askren, force scrambles and hope to end up on top. To train for Shields GSP actually needs to probably bring in some outstanding former collegiate wrestlers. Because of the way collegiate wrestling is scored (namely, back exposure without control doesn’t result in a score for your opponent), crazy scrambles happen all of the time. You rarely see scrambles to the same extent in freestyle. Training with Estima and Gracie is awesome and can’t hurt but their games are nothing like Shields’. I doubt it will matter.

I completely agree

even if Shields had the overall advantage in grappling skill, I think GSP’s superior athleticism is too much to overcome.

I expect this to look very similar to the GSP-Kos fight, except that GSP likely won’t attempt any takedowns, possibly excluding if he reaches a point where Shields is either gassed or rocked and he can safely plant him without risk of a scramble.

I honestly can’t see Shields having much success taking him down, although if he were to do so, especially if a scramble resulted, it would put GSP more at risk than he has been in a long time…

As a GSP fan, I like watching him win in dominant fashion; still I like variety too and wouldn’t mind seeing him in some danger. Kos was able to create a nice scramble when he dove for a leg; I could see perhaps Askren’s influence there. Shields needs to push relentlessly for scrambles — Shields should be diving for GSP’s legs, pulling guard, dropping for knee bars, and doing everything else almost without regard to risk he needs to get this fight to the ground. I think GSP’s athleticism and fight IQ will make it extremely difficult for Shields to do much. Like you, I don’t see GSP shooting any TDs, save for times when Shields is rocked. I also see him avoiding the clinch since Shields best chance at forcing scrambles is when GSP’s back is against the cage and he can’t sprall.
