Antonio McKee talks loss at UFC 125: (via MMA Fighting)

"I was really nervous, not about my opponent, but just the crowd, the people. I was surprised that I got that nervous, but the UFC is intimidating." ..."I wasn't tired, I was just excited."

"I didn't think it was the right decision. But you know what, man? I got too excited because I was winning on the feet for the first time in my life (laughs). I was like, I'm going to try and knock this dude out." ..."If I would have been over-aggressive (Jacob Volkmann) would have taken me down easier."

"This is just a setback, a bit of a humbling experience for me, and a reminder to go in there and not leave it in the judges' hands. When I get my next opponent I'm going to let everybody know what I'm going to do again, only this time I'm going to impose my will."

Hopefully the UFC doesn’t cut him. It will be interesting to see what he can do with two more fights.

Excuse my emotional, reactionary, fanatic output but Pettis will be the next UFC lightweight champion. Period.

I can see McKee getting a win over lower-to-mid-tier non-wrestlers in the division. However, losing to Volkmann really puts McKee in the bottom of the UFC Lightweight pecking order which is ironic considering how much he hyped himself up coming into the UFC.

I won't jump off the bandwagon just because you lost.

ah Mandingo

not a lot of upside with a 40 year old who had a reputation for boring fights and went out and confirmed that reputation. I think he deserves on more chance but with the WEC merger I can see the UFC cutting him too. He should fight Jamie Varner in a smaller promotion and the winner gets one more UFC chance.

Did Varner not come over with the WEC guys? I figured his name would earn him maybe one fight at least, although being winless in his last 4… Oh well…

And yeah McKee doesn’t have much to offer the UFC either, it’s not like he can really do much to sharpen his skills at this point in his career; and losing to a guy like Volkmann looks awful for his debut. I would like to see him get one more chance though, as it must have been a lot of pressure to wait so long to finally get his UFC chance… It’d be a shame to see him fight to get in for so long, only to be back out after one fight.

Varner was cut. He's not in the UFC.

I’m with you on McKee though. I absolutely want to see him get one more shot.

by CB_MMA on Jan 4, 2011 12:13 PM EST reply actions

yeah i know

I think Varner deserved a UFC shot since his losses were to top shelf guys in the WEC but whatever.

You have any opinion or idea on who might pick him up now?

He’s only 26, and he’s got an attention-grabbing personality… He seems like a good addition to any other promotion.

people just flat out

do not like varner. He doesnt play the villain role or the bad guy, people just do not like him. I think that is a problem for him. people dont even care to pay to see him get beat up they just dont care.

Even after fights he will be respectful towards fighters and the crowd and they still dont care. some people just have that affect it seems.

Wow

Who did he beat here? That’s just awful.

Exactly, MMA fans just don't like Varner

In the otherhand, McKee has a cool and likable personality and he could market himself pretty well. McKee needs UFC as UFC needs McKee. May be just for the short term.

Might just be me

but I’m not the biggest fan of McKees’ personality. Things like comparing himself to Muhammad Ali, speaking in the third person and playing the race card fairly often don’t win me over.

To be frank, I’m glad he lost. The big fish is out of the little pond.

Agreed

Reminds of a brandon vera type. Making out landish comments and never backing them up. I just dont see any upside into keeping him. Too many negatives to outweigh the positives.

Why does the UFC need McKee?

by jhf884 on Jan 4, 2011 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

Varners last 4 fights

Loses title to Bendo via coming to fight instead of grapple

Goes to a draw against Shalorus

Gets beaten down and outwrestled by a motivated Cowboy Cerrone

Gets Choked out by Shane Roller.

3 losses and a draw. Watch out, Ben Askren/Eddie Alverez/Alistair Overreem that’s UFC material if I ever seen it/sarcasm

People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

UFC jitters

Sucks for McKee, but he’s closer to the tail end of his career in terms of age. I’m sure the UFC will give him one more chance, right? Right?

by pud333 on Jan 4, 2011 1:43 PM EST reply actions

The smart thing for the UFC to do is cut him

It may sound harsh, but they made their statement loud and clear. Just because someone has a long win streak against cans outside the UFC doesn’t mean they can come in and fight even the bottom tier UFC guys in the LW division. Dana made an example out of McKee, and now he doesn’t have to deal with a boring decision-prone fighter. Don’t all the people calling for McKee-Penn look foolish.

That said, I’m loving how massive and talented the UFC LW division is right now, and I would love to see him get another chance, maybe give another lower tier fighter a chance to make a name for himself by beating him. In the LW sharktank, that could be worth something.

I don’t think I can overstate how much I dislike this guy.

Its one thing to be cocky and confident, especially when you have as good of a record as McKee does. But when you lose, admit it. He can’t just say “I was beat by a better fighter that night”, but needs to talk about how he was winning on the feet, and how that he was just nervous, and not beaten.

If he can’t beat a mid-card level fighter, who is making their 155lbs debut, how will he beat anyone of note?

Unless they throw him in against a guy with no grappling, I can’t see him beating any of the top 20 guys in the UFC.

I don’t understand how anyone could give the fight to Mckee, he didn’t do anything in the fight besides the last round takedown.

Does not compute
“When I get my next opponent I’m going to let everybody know what I’m going to do again, only this time I’m going to impose my will.”

Can anyone help me make sense of this?

Jab, jab, towards, short, fierce.

he sure did talk a lot then got handled by volkmann, a low-tier 155er.. cmon mckee.. you sure you fit for the ufc bro?
