Vitor's Coach: Belfort's Better Than Anderson Silva in All Aspects

photo via ufc.com

BJJ and judo black belt as well as a world class wrestler, Rodrigo Artilheiro was chosen by Vitor Belfort to train his takedowns in Las Vegas talks to Tatame.com:
"Man, i don’t like to bet, even living in Las Vegas, but I’d bet all my cards on Vitor. I’ve said that already: in my mind, of a guy who once trained on the Nogueira’s TC, where Anderson trains… I know that (Anderson Silva) is an excellent athlete, a phenomenal guy, but I’ve always said that the only two guys that could beat Anderson are Vitor Belfort and Paulo Filho, if he’s on a good state of mind and well trained ... Vitor has all weapons to win this bout. We can’t predict the future, but I believe he’s better than Anderson in all aspects."

that's what this really reminded me of.

I have a MMA World Wide magazine with Renzo ,Nog and Phil Migliarese on the cover from 2008. Paulo is ranked above anderson silva and rightfully so.

There is little doubt in my mind Paulo would beat Anderson.

BJJ black belt with excellent wrestling, similar to Arona, but Paulo was just so much more dangerous and fluid from top control. Filho had a perfect style to beat Anderson; I doubt he would be falling into a triangle in the closing moments of a title fight.

before and after the fights everybody goes back to pretending he sucks.

Silva doesn't suck

but his takedown defense is certainly a weakness and his BJJ game isn’t as advanced as Paulo’s. Filho was a terrible stylistic match-up for him – that doesn’t mean Anderson sucks.

A lot of Anderson fans take any sort of analysis that doesn't paint him in a favorable light as hate.

Anderson is a once in a lifetime talent and a fantastic fighter, particularly on the feet. A sober Paulo is an absolutely terrible stylistic match-up for him.

I know less about recognizing true fighting talent than George W. Bush does about finding weapons of mass destruction. From now on if I wanna pick a winner I will ask the-gentle-way.

by lowellthehammer on Jan 31, 2011 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Yep, definetely getting lip

but it’s not just Paulo it’s also Vitor, Jacare now, Okami, Maia before they fought, Shogun, Machida before his slide, even freaking Mousasi. It’s not just that they analyze Anderson when they compare fighters, they just run off some long list of positives for the other fighter (some of their positives fit Anderson anyway) and conclude that’s why they would win and it just seems like they don’t take into consideration that Silva has a few strengths himself. And it’s not even a “maybe they’d win” either, it’s a definite to them.

I don't want to say he's dirty, but Forrest Griffin looks like directly after a workout his crotch might resemble a cajun swamp.

Sorry you are such a fan of a sheltered champion. Nobody would consider Silva a contender much less a champion if he were a WW where plenty of people could exploit a massive flaw in his game. the idea of Silva being the most well-rounded fighter in the game is downright laughable when he lacks the single most important skill in mma.

In fact, he’s really not even that great a striker. He takes WAY too many shots on the chin but gets away with it because he has a good chin. If you look at the Rivera, Franklin, Sonnen, Maia, Cote, fights all of them hit him solid at one point or another. He has good kicks and knees and elbows but his boxing is ordinary.

if he comes out like that against Vitor he will get KOd 100%. The only concern I have for Belfort is his epicly long layoff but nonetheless I expect either Silva to be on the canvas or a boring, tentative decision for Silva by trying to avoid Belfort at all costs.

He might be generally right “skill wise” except that Vitor doesn’t have Anderson’s conditioning, chin or heart, which makes Anderson the favorite in my book. Anderson also is as smart of a fighter as anyone.

nah… I think Vitor does posses tools Anderson doesn’t (mostly his boxing ,explosive ability and better top control on the ground), but overall I have never seen anything that even remotely makes me believe Vitor has half the arsenal Anderson does. Very few fighters have that many tools in their aresenal (GSP and a handful of others).

Good point, but...
his boxing

Anderson has professional boxing experience and trains with Freddy Roach

explosive ability

Cause Anderson doesn’t have ANY first round KO’s?
better top control on the ground

Like how he controlled Dan Henderson on the ground? Or how Vitor got controlled by Dan and lost?

by Str8_right on Jan 31, 2011 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

freddy roach also said anderson had some of the worst habbits of anyone he has trained with.

K.O.‘s have nothing to do with explosiveness. Explosive ability as in athleticism, if you can’t see the difference there I can’t help you.

Anderson’s game is more about smooth transitions from his back and using his length for control. Vitor has a much more direct method of control. MMA math is not the best method to use to determine a fighters grappling style.

Anderson takes this and is easily the fighter I admire most in the world to the point where my approach to the fight game emulates his a great deal… despite that I can look at things objectively. Anderson is not this explosive wrestling machine. He is one of the best Nak Muays in mma with a very smooth ground game based around transitions.

As a nak muay farang myself, I can tell you that Thai hand techniques and guards drive traditional western boxing coaches crazy. They fail to forget that the a lot of the hand placement and guards that work in boxing don’t work in MMA or Muay Thai because of kicks and knees. You have to be explosive in order to put someone down with 1 punch period and you need explosive athleticism to land those Carlos Newton flying knee KOs man. Guess we’ll have to see Saturday. Ultimately though Im glad we at least agree on one thing. Anderson will win Saturday

by Str8_right on Jan 31, 2011 10:49 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I definitely agree on that.

Also, I am not taking from Silva’s athleticism, he doesn’t need to be as forceful as other fighters since his technique is crisper. I think it’s fair to say that raw power Belfort is probably stronger, same with his explosiveness, I think he is the more explosive fighter, but it doesn’t matter. Most of that is wasted energy, where Silva maximizes his efforts with precision and proper technique.

Positive.

Ever since Dana White praised Silva’s performance vs Sonnen, while previously loathing his Leites and Maia fights, Silva and White are finally on the same page – it’s ok to fight another Brazilian as long as you make it look exciting and no one really gets hurt. That’s the Silva solution to an otherwise stalled career.

Well, don’t say non stop because he had shoulder surgery. Also, to me its more about fight conditioning and how that will effect other aspects technically. It just seems that its impossible to train for the adrenaline release that only occurs during a fight.

Shogun, tito, are two guys aside from rampage who have mentioned the reality of ring rust. Of course now that I’ve used tito to solidify my argument I have lost all credibility.

He would have to be an idiot not to eat an Apple then. What if he foolishly chooses a pear? It’s close….would you still pick vigor then?

Thank you UFC fans. My name Stun Gun. I want GSP

A guaranteed Silva win by way of acting

Silva has shown Belfort via the Sonnen fight how to make an exciting fight, get paid, and avoid injury.

The Seagal School of Acting for the win.

Actually your chart proves...

…Seagal is perfect for being Fedor in a movie. He just needs to shave his head, as he already got quite a belly.

SS acting makes JCVD look like Marlon Brando.

Van Damme was ready to fight him at Stallone’s house, but Seagal bailed, according to Van Damme.

Jean-Claude Van Damme as… Ben Archer, a bouncer who kicks ass first and talks never.

BEN ARCHER:

“Shit the fuck. Mumble.”

It was Stallone who told the story actually.

VD: No. I waited for two hours. He never came. Seagal was very unrespectful that night.

Man your on top of this thing, respect. Still it really was Stallone who talked about it first in FHM in 1997. Just to say it wasn’t JCVD making stuff up like one could think.

I would also have confidence in Paulo Filho and Vitor beating silva

After all, we saw how Roids can be effective against Silva (See Chael Sonnen fight).
