Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

40427

UFC Hall-of-Famer, Dan "The Beast" Severn picked up his 8th straight victory along with the Elite 1 MMA heavyweight championship, after choking out Scott Fraser this weekend. The 52-year-old legend improved his record to 97-16-7.

Other notables who competed this weekend:
- Efrain Escudero won his second straight bout since being released from the UFC by submitting Jeremy Larsen on RITC 148.
- UFC veterans Mark Holst and Kalib Starnes both picked up rear naked choke victories on Wreck MMA. Strikeforce veteran, Joe Riggs wasn't as fortunate though, as he got TKO'd by Jordan Mein on the same card.

Your move, Randy Couture.

In all honesty though, this is awesome.

He probably has to have a bunch of fights that were not recorded from the early days

So he does have 100+ already, but you have to account for worked matches (which still appear in his record) and wonder how many he actually won.

Like that idea alot

I think Severn takes it easily though, Royce is a natural 170 lb’er.

Maybe in an openweight grappling match?

97-16-7.... what a noob

That record is almost as impressive as that suggestion….

definitely my first reaction

Was he could be next for Herschel. They could bring in Mark Coleman and Don Frye (as they wanted) as well and they can all fight each other.

I wonder if a UFC return is even close to being a remote possibility at 52. I mean anybody else with 8 straight wins would be looked at long and hard for a contract offer, but he has to be just too old for the UFC. Would be pretty cool to are him fight Randy or Cro Cop or possibly even Big Nog (depending on how he looks when he returns)

i put dan in my picks for herschel next on my fan post

by The Evil Dr Pork Chop on Jan 31, 2011 8:40 AM EST up reply actions

Okay none of the guys he faced have a winning record

but still all of them were new to the sport with less than ten fights (i think 6 was the most). That still makes him a great opponent for the 2-0 Herschel Walker. Strikeforce should make the fight happen… it is a win-win for them. If Herschel Walker wins then he just beat a UFC Hall of Famer on an 8 fight winning streak that has won 97 other fights. If he loses then he was gutsy and heroic for stepping into the cage with a hall of famer who has almost 100 wins. In fact, going off of what I said above, they should setup a mini “Legends” tournament with Coleman, Frye or Ken Shamrock or a few other old guys willing to fight for a paycheck.. Guys with a name that would give the impression that Walker is getting a step up in competition, but it wouldn’t be crazy if he actually won.I admit that something like this would just seem stupid if the UFC were to do it, but would be something I would love watching in Strikeforce.

If they were to do something like this

hypothetically, who else would you like to see in a Strikeforce “Legends Tournament”

It’s funny how people bitch about Hershel fighting cans when Severn has been doing it for years.

Food goes in here

by Pandanus on Jan 31, 2011 7:19 AM EST up reply actions

Severn isn’t doing it in a major promotion on TV… that’s a big difference.

by Shnak on Jan 31, 2011 7:33 AM EST up reply actions

So because he’s on TV he can’t be built up?

Food goes in here

by Pandanus on Jan 31, 2011 7:53 AM EST up reply actions

No one is building Dan Severn up for anything, the dude has nearly had 100 fights, what’s to build up.

by who me on Jan 31, 2011 7:56 AM EST up reply actions

I’m talking about Hershel.

Food goes in here

by Pandanus on Jan 31, 2011 8:12 AM EST up reply actions

Yes I know I was pointing out what a horrible comparison it was between the two on any level. Dan and Herschel are doing two completely separate things at two compeletely separate career levels.

by who me on Jan 31, 2011 8:16 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Truly horrible

Comparing Dan Severn and Herschel is absurd.

by Charles Awad on Jan 31, 2011 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

You honestly think what Strikeforce is doing with Hershel is ‘building him up’? I think it’s plain old record padding, except for a new guy. Essentially, Hershel’s afraid to look bad, and Strikeforce is afraid he’ll look bad and make them look bad. And that’s all fine. My only complaint is why should I watch him fight cans when I could be watching a legit MMA guys fight instead? If he’s going to fight guys specially selected to make him look good, what’s the point? That’s a waste of everyone’s time.

by Shnak on Jan 31, 2011 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

To bring it back to Severn, if he’s fighting cans to pad his record on nothing promotions, who cares? It’s not harming anyone.

For the last time… a can shouldn’t be featured in a main card slot, no matter who he’s fighting. It’s a waste of everyone’s time. If Strikeforce/Walker don’t want him matched to a decent fighter, then he should go on the prelims. That’s what I’m saying.

Walker is fighting freak show fights to draw attention to the sport, yes it’s not terribly legit but there is nothing wrong with Strikeforce doing this. You don’t have to watch Walker fight cans on Showtime events, heck you aren’t the target audience for his fights anyway so I doubt they would care if you tuned out. Freak shows like this serve a purpose for drawing new fans in, Walker isn’t fighting to impress us internet folk anyway.

The big sell for Walker fights is that he looks so good for being so old and can beat guys much younger than he is, having him fight someone who is 4 years older than him sort of blows that all to hell, particularly if the 52 year old wins. Even at 52 years old Dan is still quiet a big step up from Scott Carson.
