Former UFC Contender Chael Sonnen Pleads Guilty to Federal Money Laundering Charges

OAKLAND CA - AUGUST 07: Chael Sonnen walks to his corner in between rounds of his fights against Anderson Silva during the UFC Middleweight Championship bout at Oracle Arena on August 7 2010 in Oakland California. (Photo by Jon Kopaloff/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

According to the Columbian, former UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has plead guilty to federal money laundering charges:

An Oregon real estate agent has pleaded guilty to money laundering in connection with a mortgage fraud case involving Vancouver-based Lighthouse Financial Group, which also did business under the name Crown Point Financial Services.

Chael Sonnen, 33, of West Linn, Ore., entered the plea Monday in U.S. District Court in Portland. He will be sentenced March 28. The maximum sentence is 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

According to a news release, Sonnen acted as the real estate agent in a transaction involving a home in Portland, and submitted a false letter and sales agreement instructing the title company to disburse $69,000 to a contractor for plumbing repairs. However, in a deal arranged by Lighthouse employees, $65,000 of the money was actually kicked back to the buyer.

This latest development follows Sonnen's positive test for elevated testosterone levels after his UFC 117 loss to Anderson Silva. It also seems to run parallel with the story of Sonnen bowing out of a political race in Oregon due to a "legal issue" in 2006. He told Mike Straka in an exclusive HDNet interview following his hearing with the California Athletic Commission that there was a legal issue, but it was being taken care of by his lawyers. Perhaps this is a part of a plea deal in the long-term, but this doesn't look good for Sonnen.

UPDATE [from Luke Thomas]: Here's the press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Oregon on Chael Sonnen's crime

"This office will continue to aggressively prosecute real estate professionals who committed the mortgage fraud that contributed to this country's economic downturn and wreaked havoc on our community's housing market. We entrusted these professionals to honestly broker real estate transactions and instead, they defrauded lending institutions throughout the country and left financial ruin in their wake," said Dwight Holton, U. S. Attorney for the District of Oregon.

Marcus Williams, the Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigations for the Pacific Northwest said, "West Linn residents, and other residents throughout the Portland/Vancouver area, can rest assured knowing that federal law enforcement agencies take mortgage fraud very seriously because it played a major role in almost crippling this nation's banking system just a few years ago."

UPDATE [from Leland Roling]: OregonLive.com writer Jeff Manning reports in his article that there is in fact a plea deal in place:

The government is recommending Sonnen be sentenced to two years of probation.
...
As part of his plea deal, Sonnen agreed to give up his Realtor's license and pay a $10,000 fine, said Michelle Holman Kerin, the assistant U.S. attorney handling the case.

UPDATE [from Nick Thomas]: Chael Sonnen vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama in the works for UFC 128 according to MMA Junkie:

Sonnen's sentencing is set to begin 10 days after he is expected to fight Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 128, according to sources close to the event, which today informed MMAjunkie.com of the pending booking just as news of the legal trouble broke.

It is pretty unusual, even

at the local level, and very rare at the federal level, but it is certainly within their rights. IIRC, it generally only makes the news when it happens with higher profile cases, particularly where there is the perception that someone is getting off too lightly (Enron for example).

I saw his act and comments as nothing more than playing a heel using “kayfabe” to garner a reaction. I thought it worked perfectly and was a trip, even if he did go too far sometimes. I did not (and still don’t) believe means hardly anything he says. He made himself the most talked about man in MMA talking the way he did. As Chad Dukes noted, he was the Roddy Piper of MMA.

I was willing to give him a the benefit of the doubt about his TRT stuff because the whole thing was a mess and there was no way of knowing his true testosterone leves without a blood test.

There’s not really anything to defend about this

Kind of unrelated...

But what does it say about MMA’s profile in mainstream American when a guy who, between one of the biggest fights of the year, his loud mouth, and his steroid scandal, dominated MMA news headlines is only mentioned as a “real estate agent” in this news story?

by Noah'sArk on Jan 3, 2011 10:19 PM EST up reply actions

This is exactly

whats wrong with society in general, you admit that this act was “very illegal” but don’t think he should get time? I’m not sure if you missed what happened two years ago, you know, the American economy on the brink of collapse, why? because of guys like Sonnen doing this very thing. While this might not be the only reason, it sure was one hell of a contributing factor. Don’t give him any special treatment, treat him like the common criminal/juicer he is. Give him some time, make him pay some ridiculous fines. White collar crimes shouldn’t be acceptable, for any reason.

by proflex on Jan 4, 2011 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

Crimes like this

had nothing to do with the collapse, that was all about fraud, greed, and a willful inability to see the inevitable consequences of their actions by the investment banking underwriters and total complicity of the bond ratings companies (Fitch, S & P, Moody’s), all of whom have (and will) escaped any real consequences for their actions, aside from those imposed by the markets…

while I can't argue

the reality of the situation, the economy collapse happened because of a serious of events, which Sonnen, albeit tiny, had a part in. It’s pretty much a snowball effect. I’m not specifically trying to say what Sonnen did, or people like him did was the reason for the collapse, but it’s all a contributing factor that lead up to the end result.

by proflex on Jan 4, 2011 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

It did in a way

The problem with this was that those whose interests appear on the surface to be aligned with preventing frauded-up mortgages was actually served by them – that is why they looked the other way at all of the fraud nonsense that was going on.

They needed subprime loans, in bulk, and planed to stick others down the road with the inevitable losses…

No chance Chael gets raped.

My half brother has been in prison for murder for 20 years, and he hasn’t even had an attempt. He’s no fighter either. He said the gay guys stick to each other and don’t bother the straight guys.

Not really the "gay" guys that do the raping

It’s usually the “straight” ones who don’t consider themselves gay, but need jail pussy

By “gay”, my brother meant the dudes that put their penises in other men, obviously. He wasn’t making any other distinctions. He just meant that no other dudes ever tried any shit with him and that he never saw other guys get forced into something they didn’t want to do simply because the guys that wanted to do that shit had plenty of willing particpants. There was no need for “rape.”

Funny story

My brother said some ‘straight’ dudes have gay relationships in jail.

He said people like to call them out on it. Like “Hey, aren’t you and Tim fucking each other?”

He said he ran into one of those guys at the store with his girlfriend(on the outside) and asked “Are you and Tim still together?”

"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"

by TheFilt on Jan 4, 2011 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

My brother(who just got out) did 12 years

He said the same thing. Gay dudes are around but they stick to themselves.

He said if people know your gay(i.e. raped a man) no one will want anything to do with you.

I have an uncle who did 3 years recently who said the same thing. I asked if the rumors were true he said “not rape, but consensual sex was rampant”.

Maybe its just Oregon, but everyone in prison is getting raped.

On the whole, I’ve heard that rape was a much bigger issue in the seventies and eighties. Since the prison population has grown so much, a lot of policies are in place that prevent or highly discourage rape. That, and who wants to hang out with a dude that rapes people? Not even other prisoners.

If he is convicted, which seems he will be, as he admitted guilt, Dana should cut him loose. I mean seriously. Now MMA is a sport in which white criminals headline? And he cheated in his last fight too. Come on Dana.

I still don’t see the comparison between stealing money and putting peoples lives in danger. There’s no defending what Page or Leben did, just as there is no defending Chael. There’s a reason why DUI laws are so serious and the penalties can be so severe and that’s because people can get KILLED.

I’m just pointing out the double standards from some fans about how Chael should be cut because he’s a criminal who stole money, while guys like Leben and Page, despite getting off because of a screwed up legal system, put innocent lives in danger throught their actions are employed without a fuss

This has nothing to do with Leben or Rampage. I am not advocating drunk driving or insanity nor that crime overshadows another. However, Chael is the biggest douche in MMA who has been walking a thin line for the past 9 months. This is merely icing on the cake.

I hope the Judge throws the book at him.

All this talk about him going to jail is baseless speculation. Jackson and Leben should both be in jail but are not due to Dana White. Sonnen has powerful friends at UFC he is still one of their top draws and spokesmen. He changed the way UFC promotes PPVs with his innovated prowrestling style shoots (trash talk). No one is Dana White or the UFC going to turn their backs on this cash cow.

Sonnen pleaded guilty so he is probably going to get a slap on the wrist. We will be seeing him fight in March and i bet we will be seeing him fight the winner of Belfort/Silva end of this year.

Any racist/xenophobic/homophobic douchebag doing the same interviews would’ve drawn the same buys from racist/xenophobic/homophobic douchebags who make up too much of UFC’s fanbase and wanted to see him beat up the black foreigner who dresses like a stereotypical gay guy (by American standards, not Brazillian standards) and dances like one of those black gay fellas. The most realistic predictions before the show were around 600k because it was considered the upper limit for a Silva fight at that point. Sonnen’s douchebaggery may have helped them get there, but not close to as much as you’re saying. Also, what SC said below.

Clay Guida also doesn’t play his stomach like Kamala. Roy Nelson plays his stomach like Kamala. Kamala broke box office records during his feud with Hulk Hogan in late ‘86-early ’87, beating the Hogan-Paul Orndroff feud in many cities. Ergo Roy Nelson is clearly one of UFC’s top draws.

Chael is a naughty boy

but let’s be real

This office will continue to aggressively prosecute real estate professionals who committed the mortgage fraud that contributed to this country’s economic downturn

what a load of shit!

Financial institutions ripped off American home owners, and not the other way around.
All Chael did was get his client, a home buyer a better deal. Sonnen is far from a Bernie Madoff, just a roque realtor.

..!..

by nostraboris on Jan 3, 2011 11:12 PM EST reply actions

Uhh many American home owners were remarkably stupid in their ability to think they could pay back a mortgage

“Predatory lending” can often be spun “buyer too stupid to understand basic finance and current income level.” Not always, but often.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Jan 3, 2011 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

uhhhh if a lender gives a guy a loan

knowing he will never be able to pay it off, it’s predatory lending. Regardless of the prey being stupid or not.

..!..

by nostraboris on Jan 3, 2011 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

Not really

If there’s a 90% chance they can pay it off, is that predatory lending? Those are the type of “sub-prime loans” you hear about, and that’s about the rate banks thought people would be able to pay back. Banks don’t make money when they know someone can’t pay off a loan (except in rare cases), they aren’t that dumb. Problem was easy money made the sub-prime market the most profitable mortgages to make (so long as prices didn’t fall) and everyone jumped in on what they thought were 90% chance of payback loans that were more profitable…..except the sheer volume influenced that default rate.

And then that 10% chance of failure needs to be priced into any security, but these were being priced in the derivatives as though everything was AAA—-or less than 1% chance of failure.

To avoid more of a very long story, to say “financial institutions ripped off American home owners” is WAY, way one-sided oversimplifying an incredibly complex issue.

Not afraid to nitpick

Banks make TONS of money on loans that don't get paid off

It is the very essence of banking. Late fees, adjustable interest, short sales and selling loans rated as reliable while there was barely a credit check. Getting your mortgage rate adjusted costs THOUSANDS.

But more to the point: The prosecutor pontificated that guys like sonnen caused the economic downfall, which is simply not true.

Sonnen deceived a title company by freeing up money, saying it was to fix plumbing, but in stead giving it back to the buyer. Big deal.

..!..

by nostraboris on Jan 4, 2011 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

I kinda bolded the key there, but the re-packaging isn’t screwing the homeowners directly technically. That’s more dicking the investors. And all the other stuff is from people sorta kinda paying off the mortgage, not the “no chance of much of any payback, actually predatory” type stuff, and that again is often people being stupid. The terms are there in the contract, and if you are buying a house, read the fucking contract.

Predatory lending IMO is #1 actually lying to people about the terms of the deal and/or penalties or #2 actually hoping the people absolutely don’t pay off the mortgage after a few years, so they get to foreclose on the house and sell it for more than the remaining balance on the loan.

Not afraid to nitpick

This is true

Where the fuck was the Attorney General when banks were duping and targeting low-income families? Chael is a lot of things but what he did wasn’t responsible for the bubble or the collapse… not to say he might of got away with much shadier shit.

by bleve_ on Jan 4, 2011 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

Banks (and mortgage companies)

Have long since packaged and sold said loans by the time they default. The agreements vary, but in general the only ones they were forced to buy back are those where the buyer never made any payments.

How often do judges not do what is agreed to?

Why would he make a plea deal if he is going to get serious jail time anyway?

That 20 years is in there for when they catch someone named Gotti laundering money, not someone who got caught screwing around with 70k.

It happens more than you think

Less often in federal court, but you’d be surprised. I’d have to look at the judge’s record.

You make a plea deal with the prosecution (i.e. the gov’t). The judge still has to sign off on the plea.

I’m not saying a judge would make him go away for 20 or some shit like that, but it’s possible a judge gives him a small amount of jail time.

Based on my experiences working in and around the legal system this is completely normal and he won’t see any jail time. The prosecutors know the judges. They aren’t going to work out a plea knowing that this particular judge will just throw it out.

Here's the thing about it

people really only have the one event to even try to measure this by. Maybe if Chael hadn’t gotten popped for steroids and was in another event afterward, we’d have some more conclusive evidence.

I’m just doing some Sentencing Guideline napkin math here, but the offense level for theft of 69,000 dollars is 13. Add 8 for money laundering, and you are looking at a offense level of 21. Assuming Chael is a first time offender, that would put in him 37-46 months of jail time. If the prosecution is recommending two years of probation, that’s almost certainly because Chael is cooperating with the prosecutors. The fact that he pleaded guilty only two weeks after being charged in an information is also strongly suggest Chael cooperated.

1.) What exactly did Chael do?

2.) Now that we know he has a deal, chances he faces actual jail time?

1) it seems he brokered a fake real estate sale, which gave a 65k kickback to his mother’s plumbing company

2) the government is recommending 2 years probation, 10k fine, and revocation of his real estate license. it is a plea deal.

by kellly on Jan 4, 2011 8:34 AM EST up reply actions

Not at all

This is a roundabout way of kicking money back from the seller to the buyer. Nothing more, nothing less, and frankly nothing all that unusual (although illegal).

The portion of the money that went to the plumbing company (less than $5K) is simply a fee for participating in the deal.

Sonnen vs Akiyama...

…what the hell?

Akiyama has the most bizarre fight progression I’ve seen in the UFC. Usually when guys lose fights they get easier matchups, and get steps up in competition when they win. It’s been the exact opposite for him.

beats Alan Belcher > loses to Chris Leben (I guess this is debatable) > loses to top 10 Bisping > faces #2 middleweight Sonnen

by Jeffigatame on Jan 4, 2011 1:30 AM EST reply actions

I think this happens when Dana wants to justify cutting a guy so he sets a guy up to lose his third in a row. I could see Akiyama being gone after this. Probably the same reason why Kris McCray is getting matched up with John Hathaway.

It was exciting because Anderson was getting beat, but if you actually watch it again, outside of the beginning of the first round and small pockets until the finish, it was quite boring. Fitchian in its quality. Chael didn’t pass, didn’t hit Anderson hard and was content to lay in SIlva’s guard.

Go head and watch the fight again and tell me you don’t hit fast forward.

Now, what will a rematch draw? Who knows? We know so much about that fight that taints it more. We know Sonnen sucks at sub defense. We know Silva had a badly hurt rib. We know Sonnen roided. Who’s really gonna want to see that fight? Maybe you could get 600K, but nobody gives a fuck about Chael’s trashtalk because he won’t go on the media blitx this time. That don’t got nothing to do with with his trash-talk except that people tired of his sctich are laughing.

3. It was new the first time. Unless Chael learns striking, it won’t be new again. There’s no reason why people have to think that a rematch would be different. Anderson will be healthier, Chael will be off roids.

Look at Vick, potential MVP. The guy who did a hit and run and killed a woman (can’t remember his name…). I don’t expect Sonnen to be a model citizen, he punches people in the face for a living.

thats no excuse....

I sure as hell know that possibly if you or I were convicted of doping and/or money laundering that your employer wouldn’t think twice of firing us. Its common sense. A) you broke the law and B) the company doesn’t want that type of negative attention.

Just cause Sonnon is a celebrity or as you put it, punches people in the face that he shouldn’t be held to just as high a standard?

Give me a fucking break…

here's the thing

when you’re valuable, the rules change a bit.

and let’s talk more about your abstract standard. are you saying that money laundering and doping convictions should result in automatic termination of employment?

what about offenses committed prior to your employment? should we punish all felonies like this? how about misdemeanors?

Shit, maybe I should add my own..

I guess the only wrestling Sonnen will be doing is with dudes in jail!

I doubt he'll get time.

Every time Sonnen’s name is in a tilte he gets 600 comments.
But Sonnen has value. The story for the second Silva fight can write itself.

All those athletes that you mentioned have something that Sonnen has and probably never have

And that’s championships. They are popular name brands. And unlike Sonnen they seem to have learned from there mistakes. Or at least, they are staying out of negative eye of the public. They are also needed for their teams to succeed. They are winners.

Sonnen can’t even capture a championship belt ’roided up.

So again, what exactly is his real value to the UFC? I don’t see anything from where I’m standing….

Bernie madoff, enron, Haliburton, tyco, are real criminals. I am shocked he gave up his real estate license over this. What he did was stupid but it is common practice in the real estate world. TO CALL IT MONEY LAUNDERING IS HILARIOUS. This is a borderline waste of tax payer Money. Meanwhile the RAPIST, CHILD MOLESTOR, KILLERS, and real criminals never even come close to getting busted. This is a prosecutor with a hard on for Chael. Lmao if he’s been dealing with this since 2006. I would rank this up there with the Ken Starr prosecution of slick Willy Clinton

It is completely misleading

but as in almost all such crisis’, the real culprits avoid blame and consequences. See the S & L crisis, the junk bond fiasco, the ’87 flash crash, LTCM, Enron and many others.

When the public outcry is loud enough, then there are generally some “name” people associated with the various scandals who are made examples of (Michael Milken, John Gutfreund, various S & L execs, some Enron principals and the like), but for the most part those who truly profited from what was done escape notice or real punishment.

In fact, mortgage fraud - of completely different types - did play a major role in the financio-pocalypse.

It’s just that the problem was fraud in terms of approving mortgages, not this kind of money laundering. They’re both problems, but pretty unrelated.

True

But it was much more than run-of-the-mill fraud as it was done with the full knowledge and encouragement of the investment banks that were creating mortgage-backed securities and derivatives of same out the raw loans…

Agreed. Unfortunately for us Americans,

and ultimately the world, the brief window after the initial shocks where additional regulation could have been forced on the industry without worry due to public outcry has now slammed shut.

All bad debts must eventually be dealt with before this is all over – this simply guarantees that when the day of reckoning delayed by the Fed finally comes, it will be far larger than this last one, and beyond the scope of even the Fed to effectively offset.

the housing bubble

probably nothing, but kick back usually involve charging more for a product then what it’s worth, if you inflate the price of houses in an area(s) as was done in the U.S., then people start to think that they are worth more then they really are, so that has a lot to do with a bad economy.

There is a reasonably concise and very accurate description of what really initially caused the crash (the subprime mortgage market), minus some of the obscure technical details not necessary for understanding what actually happened called “The End” that was written by Michael Lewis (of Liars Poker, Moneyball and The Blind Side fame).

Lewis does a great job at taking the very complicated and distilling it so that the needed info is still there, but it is readable by those not trained in the field.

Probably the only thing I have read that is as good (although book length) is “Demon of Our Own Design” although it is a little more technical of a read.
