Fedor Emelianenko Scheduled to Fight Antonio Silva in February

Fedor Emelianenko will fight Antonio Silva on February 12th in New Jersey, according to a Brett Okamoto of ESPN and Mike Whitman of Sherdog. Reports of the bout surfaced in December, though M-1 Global denied anything had been finalized.

The Sherdog story indicates that a fight between former UFC champions Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett is also in the works. Both fights will be part of the rumored eight-man heavyweight grand prix tournament that Strikeforce has been planning for 2011. Fabricio Werdum and Brett Rogers are expected to meet in March in Columbus, Ohio, though that fight has not been confirmed.

Emelianenko last fought in June of 2010 and suffered his first loss in ten years to Fabricio Werdum. M-1 Global, Emelianenko's management, has been mired in renegotiations with Strikeforce since the loss.

Silva knocked out late-replacement Mike Kyle last month and won a decision over Andrei Arlovski in May. He last lost by decision to Werdum in November of 2009.

Why?

Fedor doesn’t deserve a shot at Overeem (not that that’s a huge concern for SF apparently). He’s coming off of a loss. He should’ve gotten the shot instead of Rogers, but that ship sailed.

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here.

It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You’re a plague and we are the cure.

Granted

Overeem should really defend his belt much more often for it to mean something, But he’s more interested in Building an image in Japan (which makes business sense, really). I’d just like to see SF’s title picture have some semblance of organization and legitimacy.

by BKdroid on Jan 3, 2011 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

Your one man crusade against The Reem is getting old.

His K-1 run shows how much his striking has improved. But you may predictably say “But striking doesn’t mean shit in MMA when you can get taken down and then pounded out and submitted, which is why K-1 success means nothing hur hur hur.” The Reem also has a good submission and ground game. Getting subbed by Werdum when he wasn’t even full time heavyweight isn’t something to be ashamed of.

by Rob Young on Jan 3, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

He also made Rogers look like a joke.

The same Rogers that had the great Fedor Emilianenko in trouble.

by Rob Young on Jan 3, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong, but..

Hasn’t Fedor been in trouble in like 75% of his fights?

by BKdroid on Jan 3, 2011 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

It’s not that high, but he has WTF moments a lot. Mark Hunt somehow got side control on him and went for an americana. I think Fedor gets by a lot because he’s more athletic than most heavyweights.

by crazybones on Jan 3, 2011 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

He also made Duffee look like a joke, and Duffee shouldn’t have even been cut from the UFC in the first place. He got cut because of his attitude, not his skills. So Overeem just basically beat a UFC fighter.

damn straight

if anyone should fight Overeem, it should be Werdum. i get that he’s injured – but then wanting a rematch against Fedor? that doesn’t solve or prove anything, and i don’t exactly see anyone clamoring for that match to take place.

doesn’t anyone want the belt, or are they all scared of Overeem? it’s a shame that nobody wants to take him on, and that a bunch of guys coming off losses are the ones that are seriously even considered for championship matches. don’t be surprised if Lashley gets the next crack at the belt. it’s a fucking joke.

by F'n Clownshoes on Jan 3, 2011 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think he vacates the title since these will all be 3 round affairs.

This is just a tournament which COULD be for the belt if Reem makes it to the finals. If not, then the winner is just Grand Prix champion.

by Sucker-Lite on Jan 3, 2011 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

The Grand Prix idea is fine too.

I would still have the belt available at the end though. The only division Strikeforce can claim as competitive is HW. The belt needs to be defended and available. If it’s not Stikeforce just submits to the sterotype that has been created for it. An org that has good fighters, puts on good fights, but struggles w/ relevance.

by F'n Clownshoes on Jan 3, 2011 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

I would personally rather see them submit to the stereotype than anything else. Let’s face facts, they can’t truly compete with the UFC, and they work under a business model of getting television ratings than the UFC which gets PPV buys. Also, as far as relevance is concerned, Strikeforce only has a handful of fighters that are universally ranked in the top fifteen of their respective weight classes, so they will always have that relevance issue worked against them even if they tried to do something about it. I agree that ‘the belt needs to be defended and available’ though.

I won't jump off the bandwagon just because you lost.

Rogers

Why would he be included in this tournament? He’s already been tooled by Overeem and Fedor, and no one thinks he has a chance in hell of beating either in a rematch. Maybe have him fight Kharitonov, but he seems like way too much of a squash match for either Werdum or Barnett.

by IWillPartyHard on Jan 3, 2011 3:07 PM EST reply actions

Because they need 8 men

and anything could happen. He did better against Fedor than most, and beat Arlovski (who would most likely also be included in the tourney). He definitely wouldn’t be a favorite but I think he would have a legit shot at beating either Werdum or Barnett (especially if he could avoid going to the floor with Werdum, and I think Barnett is still something of a question mark vs. top tier talent with stringent drug testing).

by Balrog on Jan 3, 2011 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Eventually, SF will have to match a contender against a veteran.

Cormier, Del Rosario, and Lavar Johnson need to be attached to this if one of these guys can’t go. They can’t just continue to fight scrub after scrub. Sign Sylvia. Get some guys from DREAM. Hell, get Chad Griggs in the tournament, but MAKE THIS HAPPEN STRIKEFORCE!!! Then have Lashley fight Hershel Walker as the inaugural bout of the tournament!

If all goes well, CBS will jump at the opportunity to air this tournament and SF will climb to heights never yet achieved.

by Bloodsport on Jan 3, 2011 3:10 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I would be widly behind the idea of an 8 man tourney

if only because that would mean definite fights for Fedor and the rest of the SF heavyweight crew. I don’t know how they would be able to lock everyone into a multi-fight agreement like that when it’s such a struggle to secure one fight, but if it happens it would be amazing.

On a marketing side it would be a great move by SF, tournaments=instant momentum and a very easy to follow storyline. Even if only the hardcores truly appreciate the pedigree of many of the fighters, the American public does understand a tournament.

i wonder who the other 2 fighters will be? Who else does Strikeforce have in their roster at HW?

Shane Del Rosario
Valentijn Overeem
Sergei Kharitonov? Is he even under contract w/ strikeforce?

I guess things could work out if they have Valentijn Overeem vs Shane Del Rosario to even out the 8 man tournament, then the winner would get a shot at the REEM

by darkotto23 on Jan 3, 2011 3:17 PM EST reply actions

Sherdog actually reported that they would hold alternate bouts...

…in case in jury sidelines a participant. Cormier, Lavar Johnson, and Shane Del Rosario are expected to compete. Maybe Alistair’s brother too, though he probably wouldn’t compete if he had to fight AO. Honestly. They should give Sergei the fight with AO in the tourney. If they want the winner to get a title shot against the Reem, thus allowing AO to abstain from the tourney, then Sergei should fight Del Rosario for the final bout and let Cormier fight Johnson for the alternate spot.

Really, they almost CAN’T go wrong however they decide to do this.

So did M-1 and Showtime finally get a new deal done for Fedor?

They had to of right? I mean how do they put Fedor in a tournament if he only has 1 fight left on his contract?

If it’s a 3 round tournament then every fighter has to have at least 3 fights on their contract to be put in it just in case they make it to the finals. Otherwise your just hoping to get lucky and the fighters without enough fights left on their contract will lose. That is no way to run things.

Fedor vs. Silva
Kharitonov vs. Arlovski
Barnett vs. Rogers
Werdum vs. Overeem

Screw the tournament! Those are the best matchups to be made and actually make some sort of sense. The whole idea of a proper tournament doesn’t make sense unless they’re stripping Overeem of the title or having a HW Tournament Belt to go along with the HW title.

1 Overeem vs 8 Kharitonov

Uhhh… you have Arlovski seeded 5th.

His last loss was to Big Foot Silva. Also Arlovski lost to Brett Rogers the fight before Silva.

No Alistair till the summer

I doubt we will se Overeem as part of the tournament now. If he is slated to come back to strikeforce in the summer, the two elimination rounds should be over by then. I think the last slot would be Kharitonov, probably against somo of the Strikeforce HW prospect like Shane del Rosario, Lavar Johnson or Cormier. All three need a step up in competition.
But the only thing i really hope is that they don’t come up with Lolohea Mahe again.

IF Fedor fights, and wins, his management will renegotiate his contract again. M-1 will try and wriggle itself into Strikeforce and America via Fedor. This is their MO.

Am I the only one not happy with this? Don’t get me wrong I think Fedor vs Silva is a good fight, Arlovski vs Barnnet is fine too. But come on, Werdum vs Brett Rogers is complete bullshit. Brett lost his two last fights and Werdum is #1 contender who defeated Fedor. So I hope that fight isn’t going to happpen. In my opinion Werdum and Overeem shouldn’t be in the Tourney, they should just fight each other and the winner of that fight waits for the tournament winner. Rogers should fight Kharitonov, Del Rosario, Laval or Cormier.

but it’s a lame excuse not to fight for a title and fight a guy who lost to a guy who you just beat.

by Andrew TheSaint on Jan 3, 2011 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Not really.

If he’s going to fight for the belt he should try to give himself the best possible opportunity to do so. Shaking the ring rust off against Rogers is as good a way to do that as any.

OHHHHH! OH MY GOODNESS DID YOU SEE THAT?! He ran up the wall like a ninja and landed a high kick! Unbelievable! I've never seen anything like that, it's like something out of a movie!

Well...

But he will have to fight many more times than once to get the title and also what if he loses to Rogers? That would fuck up all the situation. I think it’s better lose to a champ than to a can.

if he beats Werdum hes not a can!

Hell even if he doesn’t beat him he is still top 25, maybe top 15.

I like it for the most part, but I don't get it.

If Overeem is champ with a clear #1 contender in Werdum, and Fedor/Silva is a legit next shot after that, why not use the Prix to build up someone else, especially one of their younger guys? Sign a couple vets and do it like this maybe:

Overeem/Werdum for title
Fedor/Silva for #1 contender

1 Josh Barnett vs. 8 Andre Arlovski
2 Daniel Cormier vs. 7 Sergei Kharitinov
3 Tim Sylvia vs. 6 Brett Rogers
4 Shane Del Rosario vs. 5 Pedro Rizzo

Reserve Bouts

Paul Buentello vs. Jeff Monson
Lavar Johnson vs. Lessereem

Well I wouldn’t call this proposed setup by Strikeforce a true tournament. I understand why they are calling it a tournament but I just see it as normal match making. For me a true tournament needs seeding and then to be played out according to the brackets.

It’s clear by the proposed match-ups revealed that these aren’t seeded fights in tournament style. Unless the person doing the seeding is insane. They are just matches made based on the circumstances they are dealing with. I’m guessing the next round of fights would be the same. The powers that be would then match make the second round as well. To me that isn’t a true tournament.

Just BE.

If they pull this off this will give strikeforce a much needed thing they are missing, narrative. Each Strikeforce called while fun is always just a good night of fights. After that night its like well wonder what there gonna do next. I like Strikeforce I like free MMA I want them to be around I hope they can sack up and get this pushed though

This is fantastic if it pulls through

Right when everyone was talking about how the UFC’s heavyweight division was getting inactive due to all of the injuries, legal issues, and Lesnar seemingly not wanting to fight, StrikeForce pulls a great move like this that will completely ignite their heavyweight division.

And depending on how it plays out, we could see StrikeForce upset the UFC for heavyweight divisional dominance. StrikeForce is far from legitimately competing with the UFC on any level, but the heavyweight division is the only one where StrikeForce has a strong foothold in the top 25 relative to the UFC. The UFC has like 19 of the top 25 light heavyweights and 21 of the top 25 welterweihts and a majority of the top 25 of every division.

StrikeForce might be able to upset them in the rankings with a tournament like this. Especially since they are lining up guys like Del Rosario and Cormier as alternates.

I say make the Overeem vs Kharitonov rubber match the first match of the tournament.

My picks for first round winners would be Fedor, Barnett, Werdum, and Overeem.

Then make the Fedor vs Barnett fight that never happened, and set up the Werdum vs Overeem rematch. Then you’ve potentially got Fedor vs The Reem in the final, which could be stunning.

I don't think you got what I meant

Obviously Cain is #1 and will be until he loses.

But with Fedor at 3 and Werdum at 4(those should be reversed since Werdum BEAT Fedor), Overeem is at 8, Silva, Barnett and Rogers are 10, 11, and 12 and Arlovski is 15

The right amount of upsets and wins could cause some leap frogging in the rankings that gives StrikeForce the majority of the top 10 heavyweights. Fedor and Werdum losing would drop whoever beats them into their spots, and Fedor and Werdum would only go down a notch or two, pushing the UFC guys currently beneath Fedor and Werdum down even further.

It could result in an opposite Fedor effect with Cain…where Cain is the #1 guy and the champion in the UFC, but the majority of the top 10 that people are dying to see him fight are outside of the UFC.

It still won’t mean shit for the UFC vs StrikeForce argument in general though. Better production, more events, better matchmaking, deeper divisions, and top 10/top 25 dominance in the 6 other divisions will all still belong to the UFC.

Werdum was too far below Fedor, and will be too much of a dog in a rematch to put him above Fedor…

Then again, Lesnar at #2 has got to be one of the better rankings jokes in a long time…

MMAJunkie is also reporting that its Arlovski vs Kharitonov

instead of Arlovski vs Barnett, and that Werdum vs Rogers is off.

So, confirmed
Fedor vs Silva
Arlovski vs Kharitonov

My guess for the rest
Barnett vs Rogers
Overeem vs Werdum

The winner of Overeem vs Werdum will get the winner of Arlovski-Kharitonov, for Werdum, Arlovski or Kharitonov would be a rematch of a loss, and for Overeem, Kharitonov would be a rubber match.

Winner of Fedor-Silva vs Rogers-Barnett winner would be best too. Possible Fedor-Rogers rematch, possible to finally get the Fedor vs Barnett fight, and possible to see Silva get matched up with either.

I also think it would be good for tournament losers to be matched up with other tournament losers, and winners of those matchups matched up to determine future title contenders.

So Werdum, Overeem, and Rogers need opponents

Barnett isn’t competing
Werdum isn’t fighting Rogers

So Overeem vs Werdum makes a LOT of sense.

Overeem is the champ, so any matchup for him in the tournament needs to be champion caliber fight…Werdum fits that bill
