An upset Jon Jones responds to Aaron Simpson:
Aaron Simpson tweets: "I don't think jon jones has any idea what he is getting into with Bader. I hope he is up for it."
Jon Jones tweets: "Didn't you lose your last 2 fights? Please don't piss me off, I actually have respect for Ryan. Don't you have a fight scheduled? Focus on yourself instead of weather I'm ready or not? Are you familiar with the strike policy in baseball?"

Jon Jones. . .
seems like a touchy little mamas boy. Anytime anyone mentions him an a less-than-positive light, he whines and whines like a little primadonna.

Ultimately...
He’s just a kid. I mean, I find it annoying too, but you weren’t exactly Buddha at that age.
Jones seems to be losing fans here and there as he seems to have a goody-two-shoes personality. He just needs to get more emphatic wins so MMA fans will forget anything he says.
I won't jump off the bandwagon just because you lost.
I've been getting pretty tired of his grind-it-out decisions, myself.

I guess he should laugh and let simpson talk smack to him and tell him he doesnt know what hes getting into ( Mr T wouldnt do that)….. Id say he countered the comment well and humorously ,, and i think all keyboard warriors can agree he knows what hes doing…i guess i just tend to appreciate someone who i can learn from…starting with the bonnar fight body to body suplex followed by the kick defense to spinning elbow..DAMN ( and no he didnt finish bonnar and yes Bader is one of the worst match ups for him stylistically(IF he can close the gap).. its gonna be good

On the other hand, I think every one is overlooking Bader. I think he will be able to take Jones down and I think he will win this fight. Either that or he will get Annihilated in the first round.
So, you think Bader will win or lose. You might be on to something there, unless, of course, it’s a draw.

Haha very funny. I think Bader is a bad match up for Jones because he’s more of a freestyle specialist and he could end up taking Jones down at will. Either that or Jones will starch him as he has been doing. So basically if Bader can find a way to hang with him he will win.
Have you seen any Jon Jones fights?
Both the Janitor and Matt Hamill had legitimate wrestling pedigrees, and Jones absolutely fustigated them. Hamill has a virtually identical collegiate wrestling background to Bader (they even fought at the same weight). If you think Bader is going to take Jones down “at will” when that’s not really even his game, you are out of your mind. If Bader wins it will be by catching Jones with one of those big power shots. Also, he’s not going to win.

Dont forget Vera
He had a fairly good Greco career. Not that he showed it in the cage. Actually, Vera has probably the most underwhelming MMA career when you consider his credentials

To this day
I still can’t believe how he turned out. I remember telling my friends who were just getting into MMA that this Vera guy is going to annihilate everyone and be the HW champ. Then he broke his hand against Big Tim and decided to get into a contract dispute, and he was never the same.
BOOSH
I argued constantly with a guy at work who thought the same thing. I won’t say I’m happy to be right as I don’t wish him ill or anything, but I just never believed the hype.
He is young yet though and could still turn things around if he really wants.

1. The Janitor is nowhere near as athletic as Bader.
2. Matt Hamil is too fixated on his improved stand up
Bader will come in with a game plan to not do anything stupid on the feet and time his takedowns in a Greg Jackson style game plan. I think Jones is getting a bit over confident too and is becoming a bit of a prick. He needs his arse kicked and I hope Bader is the one that does that for him. It will be the best thing that could happen for him.
by Ilias on Jan 25, 2011 11:54 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
But Jones murdered those guys
Even if Bader is a substantial improvement over Hamill, they are they same basic type of fighter (big, strong, pedigreed wrestlers with heavy hands). Hamill had absolutely nothing for Jones. He was a blocking dummy until the ref stopped the beating.
Also, from what I’ve seen of Bader, he’s not really a Chael Sonnen type fighter, where he will just go for the takedown relentlessly, throughout the fight. Bader is in love with the power in his hands, and will likely look to use it against Jones. Frankly, I think that’s his best bet, because I really don’t see him getting Jones down and holding him down consistently.
And as for a Greg-Jackson-style game plan, that sounds great and all, except for the fact that Jones will be able to counter it with a …um…. Greg Jackson game plan.
I know the haters want to see Jones knocked down a peg, but Bader is not going to be the guy to do it.

I don’t care about Hamil’s wrestling pedigree tbh because he’s not good at MMA. What people need to appreciate more is MMA is a martial art. That is why GSP out-wrestles everyone. Because of his timing and his ability to mix the striking with the wrestling effortlessly. If Bader does fancy his stand up in this fight then he will get taken out. But if he mixes the striking and goes up and down he will beat Jones.
In MMA Freestyle wrestling > Greco Roman
I’m sorry, you’re trying to make a logical argument to support your emotional bias and I’m not buying it. Nobody is taking Jones down consistently. Nobody is holding Jones down at all. He is rag-dolling legitimate fighters like they were children and beating the crap out of everyone he faces. He’s got superior reach to Bader, he’s more well-rounded and he’s got the best camp in MMA. Also, despite Bader’s vaunted strength, I think Jones will come into the ring with a not insubstantial weight and strength advantage. These are the reasons why Bader is +360 or whatever it is, not because of Jones’ “hype.”

If Bader really showed that he mixes his stand-up with his wrestling effectively then I’d say you have a point. The problem is, he doesn’t. He’s a good wrestler with decent stand-up, but he’s not this genius at mixing it up. He’s more of a Dan Henderson type fighter. If anything you described Jones (his takedowns seem to completely surprise his opponents.
Taking nothing from Bader, he’s a really good fighter with plenty of power.
Jon Jones also has some excellent scrambling ability on the ground, so if bader did take him down I’m inclined to believe Jones would scramble back to his feet

Some people just aren’t good with jawing back and forth without making it sound like you got their goat. I am not going to base his personality off of what he says on twitter. You can’t determine the tone he is trying to express. For the most part in his interviews he comes off as pretty humble. From his reaction to Vera at the weigh-ins he seems to not handle smack talk very well though. Seems pretty typical of a younger sibling with big older brothers.
It was Simpson’s insinuation that Jones is ignorant that likely set him off. He’s does seem a tad impetuous, but he’s young. He also seems to value his intelligence and that of the team around him. And then there’s that thing about being African-American and therefore being chronically underestimated with regard to matters of the mind. All of that may be in play here. But, if you want to think he’s just a plain old A-hole it’s your right. Jones opened himself up to it, I guess.

Typos
Everyone makes them. Just because I type “it’s” when I should have typed “its” doesn’t mean I don’t know the difference (similarly, “their” and “there”). Especially on a medium like Twitter, when tweets come fast and loose. Seizing upon a typo as an indicator of intelligence is just silly and petty.
People do need to learn the difference between “looser” and “loser” especially when the former is used multiple times in an entry, signifying that the user really doesn’t know the correct usage.

Well, according to you, Jones’ minor show of intemperance means that he’s an asshole, and a dumb one at that, really no different than Latrell Sprewell. It seems to me like you may have an agenda. by Jonathan Snowden on Jan 25, 2011 1:10 PM EST up reply actions
Well, you obviously called him an asshole. The word “seems” does not inoculate intent from meaning. Whether or not the Sprewell thing is an inside reference, your use of it would seem to have a lot to do with Jones given the context of the conversation. Anyway, it strikes me as a pretty clever smear job. Someone mentioned Sharpton, you toss in Sprewell — keep going, fellas, maybe we’ll make it all the way back to Nat Turner.
But I have a question. How many well-known fighters have you referred to as “assholes” in your career writing and commenting on MMA?

I guess I'm in the rabbit-hole, now.
Have you really referred to almost all well-known fighters as “assholes” in print? Why would anyone, particularly a journalist, choose to do that? I’m rather new to the sport, and certainly new to your writing (which is usually provocative in its way) but I don’t remember your making that kind of judgement about any single fighter, and certainly not “almost all of them.”
Being a good writer and thinker, it’s obvious that you have the ability to use meaning aggressively while covering your flank with passive language. But for example if someone were to say to someone else about me that I “seemed like an asshole,” I would safely assume, if I heard about it, that they considered me as such. If, when confronted, they said something like, "Well I didn’t call you that, I just said “seems” because I don’t really know you," I would probably think even less of them. It’s an expressed opinion based on a personal judgement you made about his character. Weather or not you know him, you surely know what you think of him, and more importantly, what you want others to think about him.
by Charlie Custer on Jan 25, 2011 7:32 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
He does.
Is it because he’s “dumb?” I think it’s because he’s inexperienced and perhaps too sensitive. You know what may be a cliche to me can be condescending to someone else, and for legitimate reasons. It’s all I was saying. Jones’ decision to turn up the rhetoric was his own, and was unwise. In general though, he seems like an okay guy to me. Someday, I’m sure he’ll learn to deal with the subtle condescension of meatheads better.

It's Anti- Hype Train Backlash
The same thing (to a lesser extent) happened with Cain Velasquez. With any heavily hyped fighter certain people will latch onto anything they think is negative, so they can have the opposite opinion.

Yeah exactly. I understand it’s somewhat annoying for the UFC to market him like that, but there’s a very good business reason for them to do it. It seemed like kind of a silly thing to be bothered by.

At least there will be some steam when they eventually fight.
1) Silva ducks Jones and says he isn’t as good as Tim Boesch
2) Jones calls Silva a jerk
3) Silva calls Jones a jerk
4) Potentially a great fight
5) Profit
If Silva manages to get past Rampage
and Jones manages to get past Bader
or if they both lose…
I would gladly pay to see it.

Nothing wrong with these comments IMO
Nor the Thiago comments. In the former he called out a fighter for what he saw was a disrespectful act in the cage. In the latter he was just firing back at his opponets teammate. He doesn’t talk smack well, but that’s all this amounts too.

For now, Bones is just a tall, strong prospect in a stacked weight class.
The comparison of attitudes is valid
there’s no telling whether he will ever approach MJ’s level, but always being a little pissed off and hungry in a character trait of champions.

But he's not a genius...
…MJ and Ali were geniuses.
I'm not feeding you troll.
If you disagree, I feel sorry for you.
Good question...
…Can I answer both? And throw in Mick Jagger too.
Jordan was a genius in that he got Nike to build his public persona for him
And was careful not to break that facade in public.
Both.
Nike for the persona they built, Jordan for being smart enough to realize the wisdom in giving Nike that control. No one else had done it to that level before. And Jordan again for keeping up that public face for two decades despite it being very, very different than his real personality.
Didn’t know that. I guess more credit goes to the agent then. Either way, I still give Jordan credit, as a perfectionist and control freak, giving up control of how the public sees you is a hard thing.
And he could umm... play basketball better than anyone in the world
ever.

Jordan's genius
Is bodily kinetic.
He’s clearly a basketball genius, along with a golf prodigy.
The reason he is so good, is because his mind thinks and feels the game entirely different than the rest of the world.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
The reason he is so good, is because his mind thinks and feels the game entirely different than the rest of the world.
Actually hes so good because he had unbelievable athletic ability mixed with a borderline psychotic drive to win.
If anyone’s mind actually perceived the game at a different level it would be Magic Johnson
"You should work for 15 minutes to knock your opponent out, submit him, or improve your position to give yourself the best chance of doing either." - Dan Hardy
He's not even the most athletic player
not even in his early era.
Dominique Wilkins in the 80’s and Vince Carter in the 90’s and 2000’s are both examples of players with more explosion and quickness than Jordan.
mixed with a borderline psychotic drive
that’s pretty much the hallmark of genius.
Magic was a huge PG and also a very talented athlete.
He had a great feel for the game and super high basketball IQ, but so does Steve Nash, Jason Kdd, Chris Paul, John Stockton and a lot of other players in league history.
These guys all perceive the game very differently than other players. Even other NBA players.
A backup guard in the NBA sees the game on a level that very few players ever will know exists.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
I have to say this
Blaming his greatness on his athletic ability is really downplaying his intelligence.
I’m not calling you a racist, at all. Not even backhandedly, but this is the type of things racists have always said about any great black athlete. That they dominated because of athleticism solely. Like Mike Vick, Venus and Serena.
There were so many very athletic players in NBA history who played very well and even won championships before Jordan.
Most of them are totally unknown now. Why is that? Because they didn’t have the mind Michael does.
That drive you speak of is also a creation of Jordan’s mind. You made himself that person.
That is to say nothing of all the innovation he brought to the game. Which is, in itself, a physical manifestation of his genius.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
Nobody's saying Jones is on MJ or Ali's level
The point Milk was making, that I agree with, is that many athletic greats go about their business with a chip on their shoulder, regardless of what they accomplish. They feed off of that (often false) sense of disrespect and anger to drive them to even greater heights. They are also very often, kind of dickish in person.

When has he proclaimed to be a “goody goody”? Because he said he was the type to snitch on illegal potheads? Considering he was going to be a LO, that’s not too far out of pocket. Nah, fans gave him that label. They couldn’t comprehend this man who was so good and getting so much hype, yet he was a quiet guy and not brash and cocky. It fucked with the minds of MMA fans as it went against the preconceived notions they had. So he must be pious, they concluded. When Brock gave his speech after UFC 116, everyone tripped over themselves to say “Oh, Brock’s changed/he’s a new man” blah blah. People seem to think these FIGHTERS are characters like it’s pro wrestling and everyone has a gimmick. It’s not. These are humans with a variety of emotions.

Or that saying that he's acting like an ass isn't really picking anything apart, nor does it have anything to do with being "out of character".
His statement here was completely dickish for no real reason. At face value, it was a dick thing to say. Jones is mocking a guy for losing.
You can go levels deeper and analyze this, like with the quote I posted above where he says a loss alone is embarrassing enough without people rubbing it in. Or this one from an article where he places himself on a pedestal and calls himself a champion because of how he treats people well and growing the sport.
In some ways, I feel as if I’m already a champion by the way I treat people and the things I’m trying to do for the sport
We can talk about why this was an overreaction. We can talk about how Aaron was building up his team mate, not tearing down Jones, and not being disparaging. We can talk about how Aaron is 4-2 under the Zuffa banner, certainly a respectable record. But we don’t need to.
Nothing changes the fact that this was a completely classless statement. Whether it was Jon Jones, Anderson Silva, GSP, Brock Lesnar, or Frank Mir who said it, this was disrespectful and unnecessary.
So anybody silly enough to claim that this has been brewing for ages because of success, race, or any other reason besides Jones actually being a punk desperately needs reconsider their talking points.

All well and good.
But you’re chalking Jones’ response to dickishness, and I would submit that he responded to something more subtle that he perceived (rightly or wrongly) from Simpson. It’s not at all silly to explore farther than “oh, he’s an asshole.” or “oh, he’s just a huge dick,” when examining the reasons for Jones’ weirdly extreme reaction to the words of Bader’s teammate. However, we can agree that it was a mistake. For God sake he suddenly appears to be right up there with Pretty Boy Floyd in the pantheon of uppity black fighters!

SC, I usually agree with you on issues of race and other multicultural considerations.
But I think this Jones thing is just Jon being kind of a dick. I used to be a big fan of Jones. I still kind of like him. I was willing to admit my own bias and flat-out racism in growing to dislike Rashad in this thread.
I like Jones’ fighting style, and at first I loved that he espoused and seemed to live humility and honor. This, despite the fact that his nickname should CLEARY BE “MARTIAN MANHUNTER.” But that’s beside the point. More and more (mostly through twitter), it seems to me that Bones is honorable and humble until he perceives a personal slight (as yes, I’m sorry, someone who calls Matyushenko a “talker” has some thin skin), which seems to be quite often, and then he reacts by, well….being a dick.
I’m no longer torn in allegiance between young, talented, athletic, good-looking African-American wrestlers in the LHW division. Phil gets all my love. Because he is the coolest dude.
I never (and the ROCK means NEVER) said this had anything to so with racism
My comments have been that Jones has a backlash because he was given so much attention and when that happens, there’s a backlash. I stated this on BE months ago. Never about racism. When people asked me was it about race, I said “NO, it’s not about racism.”
Why do people assume that it’s still about race? It’s like they WANT me to say “It’s about racism”.
Because it’s not.
But people keep assuming that it is.
And it’s not.
That’s said, people are nitpicking Jones’ comments as is what happens during a backlash (that isn’t about racism). People can say this was “dickish” and they have that right. I’m just laughin at the fact that I was right in the end.

yeah I don’t care if it was Nick Diaz, Fedor, GSP or Lesnar said it… it still was a huge leap about a tweet that wasn’t directed towards Jones and was more about trying to hype up Bader rather than tear down Jones.
That being said Jones is 23 and a lot of 23 year olds tweet stupid stuff, think he just misunderstood Simpson’s tweet.

Jones is another one of those assholes who hides behind a respectful demeanor, kinda like Fabricio Werdum. His true colors are showing here.
"Referees, be sure to step in and stop the fight on time tomorrow, because I might get carried away in the moment and my many punches may end up destroying my opponent." - Tatsuya "CRUSHER" Kawajiri
That was a good post until you put Fabricio Werdum in there.
Fabricio is just a goofy guy who is probably being pushed into saying whatever controversial things he is saying. I don’t think that is the case with Jones, who seems like a classic holier than thou.
He snitched on kids for smoking weed, which no matter what you think about weed, is a head scratcher. Someone snitches on kids for stealing or vandalism, fair enough. But if you see a bunch of kids smoking and laughing and generally just goofing around (because that is all that happens 98% of the time kids smoke weed) and you go tell the authorities, well that makes me wonder if you aren’t doing it because you enjoy seeing other people get in trouble.
And then he has these interviews where he talks about honor and respect and the samurai way, things that honorable and respectful people rarely talk about, while at the same time doing things that aren’t particularly honorable and respectful. Fedor hasn’t had a beef in his entire career.
Frankly, Jones should practice more of what he preaches.
by Luke Nelson on Jan 25, 2011 1:10 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
He deserved to be put in there.
I think you should check out more Fabricio Werdum interviews, not just the latest one where he talks about Overeem being his “son” and how Overeem has been “talking alot”; which really hasn’t been the case at all. In many of his interviews from the PRIDE days, he takes a condescending tone to most of his opponents while at the same time, preaching about honor and respect (does this remind you of someone?).
As for Jones, I wholeheartedly agree with everything you have said. I respect his talents but I’m not buying the dude a drink anytime soon.

He's just a young dude...
though that’s not to say that you don’t make good points. But we cannot presume to know anything about his intent.
But if anything, the whole weed thing is as bad as it gets imho ‘cause if there was legal action involved, that could’ve screwed those guys’ future prospects real bad, like not being able to join the Army, or be considered for scholarships in college, etc.
by Unabomberman on Jan 25, 2011 2:46 PM EST up reply actions
I always figures Bones was a bit sensitive when he called Vladdy (of all people) "another talker"....
But if this sensitivity leads to carnage I’m all for it…

Both jon Jones and KenFlo put foot in mouth this week.
All in all it’s no biggie.
Learn JiuJitsu, it's fun.

"Referees, be sure to step in and stop the fight on time tomorrow, because I might get carried away in the moment and my many punches may end up destroying my opponent." - Tatsuya "CRUSHER" Kawajiri
Jones didn't put a foot in his mouth
his threatening to put a foot in Aaron Simpson’s mouth.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
Nevermind. He's saying he's about to get fired. Misread that.
He better start his diet.
On the flip-side, if Aaron really wanted the fight he could just move up the ranks at 205 until they match them up.
I think Jones dropping down is the more likely of the two.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
Jones dropping down would not happen. I know a few guys close to jones, he gets about as low as he can for 205. Best he could do would be like a catchweight.
"I’m anti-stalling, not anti-wrestling." - lowellthehammer
That's what I was saying
He’s a really big buy, and he’s ranked way too high to fight Simpson without a few losses first.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
Just like the hysterical disdain that Rashad seems to get from certain sections of the public, now Jones can’t do anything right without some ridiculous backlash. The sad thing is, the more he wins (and imo he most certainly will) the hate he will get. I’m sure, just like Rashad, he will handle it well and continue to improve in the octogon. Who doesn’t occasionally act like a wanker and say some stupid shit? I’ve been lurking here for a minute so I can say that there are not too many…. Peace
Yeah that is true...
..However Jones has gone on record more than a few times talking about how awesome it is to be a true martial artist and how he is so into being humble and honorable.
And so he is being hypocritical when he involves himself in these sorts of petty spats.
No one likes a hypocrite.
Rashad is a bad influence. His dick rubs off on Jones.

"I know what I'm getting myself into. I'm getting into a title shot once I beat Bader down."
He could have come back with something calm and casual like this. Or he could have said nothing at all. For a guy who seemed to be such a cool dude before, I’m going to go ahead and chalk this one up to him having a bad day and Simpson rubbing him the wrong way with his comments. It could also be that the weight cut is getting to him, in which case he should probably just ignore them. I remember my sophomore year in high school when I cut 17 lbs. down from my natural weight to make 137. I didn’t want shit to do with anyone. However, if someone got on my nerves, I would just walk away and keep my mouth shut. It was hard to be reasonable and think of something to comeback with that didn’t make me come off as a huge dick when I was almost completely drained both mentally and physically.
So...
Jon Jones turns out to be a gasp normal twenty-something-year-old guy who doesn’t like to be trashtalked [sic?] in a public forum, and people get prissy about it? Dude’s the osn of a minister not a saint.
I meant...

That’s not the problem. The problem is, he expects everyone to act respectful and humble (i.e. Thiago Silva) but at the same time, he acts like an asshole.
"Referees, be sure to step in and stop the fight on time tomorrow, because I might get carried away in the moment and my many punches may end up destroying my opponent." - Tatsuya "CRUSHER" Kawajiri
A lot of guys, especially black guys
don’t like it when their name is in someone’s mouth. Especially for no reason.
Jon Jones doesn’t have anything to gain(at all) by Aaron talking about him.
I don’t see what’s wrong with telling someone to mind their own business and keep your name out of their mouth.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
It's not exactly him talking back but...
how he chose to do so. It makes him look petty.
I imagine he wouldn’t be fine if he was somehow on a losing skid and someone threw him a low blow like that, don’t you think?
by Unabomberman on Jan 25, 2011 3:06 PM EST up reply actions
It wasn't reply
But yeah, this stuff seems beneath Jones. But who cares?
If he wants to be a dick he has the right to. He’s about to fight in 10 days, I’m sure he’s not thinking the friendliest thoughts right now.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
Of course...
he’s entitled to act however he wants, especially as a fight approaches, and it is no reason for anyone to start hating on him. It’s just that it looks, well, silly (to use a different word).
But he’s still in the initial stages of his career so it’s no big deal. He ought to grow up out of it (given his age and success, it’s a small miracle he’s not a legend inside his own mind yet).
by Unabomberman on Jan 25, 2011 3:16 PM EST up reply actions
Oh I'm sure he is.
it’s a small miracle he’s not a legend inside his own mind yet
He just doesn’t verbalize yet. How would you feel about yourself if you destroyed Rashad(and everyone else) in practice everyday, then come fight night, you break your last three opponents within two minutes each time?
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
Dunno...
I’d be up to my nose in strippers and blow by then that all feeling would’ve totally stopped by then…

And Jones had anything to gain talking about Thiago Silva?
Hype a fight that many would consider a step back for Jones??
Yes he does.
Seeing as Thiago is a very relevant name at 205, some hype and the ensuing fight would make perfect sense.
Not only is Simpson not on Jones’ or Thiago’s level, he’s not in their weight class.
"I'll rock your body with big nasty hooks!"
Well, I personally think that wasn’t his intention when he twitted about Thiago. But your point is valid anyway.
Jones does seem pretty douchey
but I think he did imply(indirectly) he wanted to fight Thiago.
