When I heard that the UFC was going to stream prelims over Facebook, I was skeptical. What would the quality be like? How long would it take for the feed to crash ? Commenters this morning have shown a mix of reactions on the video quality, any thing from "Terrible, as bad as the worst pirate feeds," to "Perfect, good resolution in full screen mode."
Due to a lack of compatible input/outputs from laptops to TV, and the disappointing inability of my PS3 browser to handle facebook properly, I was not able to try the stream out on my big screen.
I started out watching on my desktop computer, which is hooked directly to my cable modem. Stream looked nearly perfect. It took a few seconds to buffer at first, had a slight hiccup as it seemed to upshift to a higher resolution, and after that it was perfect. Watched the 1st 2 prelims this way, but had people coming over, so to be more sociable I pulled out a laptop (well, really a netbook) and started the stream on it.
Resolution was noticeably worse, but the video still moved smoothly, with only a few momentary skips. Performance was neither better or worse upstairs right next to the router or downstairs, so I think the limiting factor was the hardware capability, rather than WiFi reception. Overall, the stream quality was better than I thought.
