Over the past few years we have seen Georges St. Pierre land major sponsorship deals and really increase his public profile. To many the driving force behind this explosion in GSP's image was his manager Shari L. Spencer. Today a press release announced a split between St. Pierre and Spencer. The reason given from the release:
They felt they had a different vision for the future of Georges' career and it was best to remain close personally but dissolve their business relationship.
Many fans will find it hard to understand that GSP would leave a manager who was a big part in landing him Gatorade and Under Armor deals but it could simply be a case of Georges feeling that he had gone as far as he could with Spencer and needing to move on.
I've talked about it a lot but the biggest athletes in the sport are going to start moving in the direction of other major sports stars which means getting with bigger and bigger agencies and management groups. This may be one of the early moments in the shift of how we see top stars handle their careers.
St. Pierre remains with Creative Arts Agency but should be signing a new manager in the very near future.
