UFC Fight for the Troops 2 Fight Card: Pat Barry vs. Joey Beltran Preview

Barry_beltran_mediumHeavyweights will be plentiful on the UFC Fight for the Troops 2 main card on Saturday night. In the first of two heavyweight tilts, former K-1 kickboxer Pat Barry (5-2, 2-2 UFC) will battle California-born and raised "Mexicutioner" Joey Beltran (12-4, 2-1 UFC). Barry's most recent appearance came at UFC 115 against PRIDE legend Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. After stunning the Croatian in the opening round, Filipovic was able to rally back from the brink of defeat and submit Barry in the third round of action. The days following the bout revealed that Barry had broken his hand and foot in the affair.

Beltran wasn't as unlucky in his last appearance, although he did come out on the losing end as well. He fought former NFL lineman turned mixed martial artist Matt Mitrione, who is also fighting on this card, in September at UFC 119. Beltran was able to win the first round of action by landing a huge right hand followed by some ground and pound. Unfortunately, Mitrione's survival allowed him to win the next two rounds against a slowly fading Beltran. Beltran's aggressive striking and wild overhands took quite a bit of gas out of his tank early, and Mitrione capitalized with his lengthier reach and peppering stand-up game.

Similarly, Barry possesses those same skills, and he's much more honed in the kickboxing arena as he is a former K-1 fighter. He has devastating leg kicks coupled with the mixed barrage of body kicks and head kicks. While that would normally spell success in this type of style match-up, Barry is weak in close quarters combat and on the ground, two areas in which Beltran may be able to capitalize.

Beltran's conditioning is also a concern as this fight drags on. His technique tends to get sloppier as he gets tired, and that tends to be the case as he gets hit as well. He's more prone to come forward throwing wild haymakers as a desperate attempt to tilt the fight in his favor or finish. But he also uses that method to gain an edge early. His best chance in this encounter is to hope for a downing blow in the opening frame. That is, unless, he has changed his mindset and technique to circle, close distance, and fire off combinations.

I don't think he'll get that opportunity. Barry isn't a diverse fighter in the sense that he can bring a high-level grappling game to this fight, but his offensive prowess is damaging enough to get the job done on Saturday night. Look for Barry to dodge the initial flurry from Beltran and counter with a steady diet of leg kicks, eventually opening up Beltran's chin for the downing blow.

Nah, wouldn’t surprise me either. He has the ability to knock out Barry.

I got Beltran in this one.

He works absurdly hard and has tons of heart. Barry’s cardio isn’t great and his grappling is negligible. I expect this to get really ugly to a GNP TKO late in the second. Plus, we can MMAth this pretty easy, Beltran > Hague > Barry. Which doesn’t mean much unless you consider that Hague is 1-3 in the UFC with Barry being his only win…

Please Barry

No laughing
No high-fiving
No hugging

During this fight. Just fight. Having said that I think Beltran gets the upset.

I’m taking “Hot Sauce” all day in this one. I know that’s not Pat Barry’s nickname, but he needs one.

Indeed.

“Hot Sauce” is much better. Plus it opens the door for all kinds of sponsorship opportunities.

I love Pat Barry, the person. However, I cannot stand fighters who seemingly completely disregard aspects of the game and refuse to learn.

It is not that fucking hard to learn at least a modicum of wrestling if you just stop obsessing over kickboxing for a few hours a week. (Looking at you Team Rough House: Daley doesn’t give one shit about the ground, and Hardy is working his rubber guard when all he needs is to learn how to sprawl better and stand the F up)

Some goes for wrestlers/grapplers who seemingly have never even attempted to learn how to throw a punch that might actually even hurt somebody. (Looking at you Ben Askren and Nik Lentz, hell throw in Jake Shields too, but i will forever give him a pass for his 8-fight finish streak)

Go Beltran, since he’s apparently at least put some effort into learning more aspects of the game.

To be fair I think Daley did better against Koscheck than many thought he would. His guard recovery was quite good though his sprawl wasn’t so good. But I agree on Beltran, I mean Barry got subbed by Tim Hague

I'm a lot like Barry...

Well, without the devastating kicks.

He’s very friendly and views his fights as sport instead of a fight.
It hurts him like it hurts me in competition. I can’t get angry and let loose. I hate the thought of hurting my opponent and don’t have that killer instinct.

I think he takes this regardless, but I’d love to see him get some help mentally preparing for a fight.

This should be a fun fight to watch. I agree with the comments that Barry needs to take things a little more seriously in there. I think it would help his game a lot if he could stop goofing off so much and just focus on fighting, similar to Dwight Howard and his post up game. Its tough to have a killer instinct if you’re natural instinct is to laugh and joke around with everyon and it also makes it hard to really improve.
