Ariel Helwani asks the best questions

The dude is both a professional and a fan. Pos rep for the suit too. More of the MMA scene should be required to wear suits unless your either a fighter or DFW.

Oh, Ariel is one of the best, there’s no doubt about it.

More of the MMA scene should be required to wear suits unless your either a fighter or DFW.

Dana F. White is the face of the #1 MMA promotion in the world, it should be a given that he wore a suit. I don’t care if he prefers going around in whatever t-shirt and jeans, his position in the company and in the sport is such that he needs to wear one when appearing in public. Fer cryin’ out loud, you don’t see the Fertittas walking around without one and even though they own more of the company than Dana does, Dana is the face of the company. The dude is certainly rich enough to afford a decent suit.
As for fighters – well, GSP wears a suit fairly often and does not look bad doing so. It certainly looks more credible than the endless “KILL SKULL HATE DOUCHEBAG” MMA shirts.

I don't know much - but I know that I don't.

Dana always wears a suit at the events.

He wasn’t in a suit in that interview because he was at a birthday party and Ariel tracked him down.

Thanks for the vid links

I agree absolutely Maynard gets an immediate rematch. Sorry Pettis, but it was kind of a joke that the WEC champ gets a shot at the UFC champ considering the chasm in competition the two promotions have. Pettis or Henderson hasn’t faced the gauntlet Edgar and Maynard have. Pettis can wait.

I for one didn’t have a problem with the reffing in Silva vs Vera. Stand ups suck, you want a stand up you make it happen. It’s Vera’s fault for being so ineffective off his back.

Oh, no doubt. Dana was at the very least tipsy in that interview.

by budgellism on Jan 2, 2011 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Agree on Vera

What would justify a stand up in Silva v. Vera? Silva was very active on the ground and Vera could do nothing. Vera should go compete in kickboxing if that’s all he wants to do.

by pwdminotauro on Jan 2, 2011 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

I feel that Pettis should fight someone like the winner of Sotiropolous vs Siver to get the winner of Maynard vs Edgar III. I mean, the Pettis kick was very cool and his last fight was very good, but I don’t think that he really deserves a Title shot.
I don’t see any reason for a standup for any parts of the fight that were on the ground of the Vera vs Silva fight. Silva displayed some very effective and damaging ground n pound which showed in Vera’s broken nose. It wasn’t like there was lay n pray, and the ground n pound was totally effective. Also, Vera showed no sense of urgency in even trying to get back to see feet in that he didn’t try to create scrambles or explode back to his feet. Granted, Silva is a BJJ blackbelt, but it looked like Vera didn’t even try to get back to his feet.

I won't jump off the bandwagon just because you lost.

by chrisbboy82 on Jan 2, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that there was no reason to stand them up, but Thiago’s GnP wasn’t that effective. The broken nose was a result of a one shot in the end of the 3rd round, but up to that point Vera didn’t really receive any significant damage.
It was strange seeing Vera loose the clinch game. It seems like he always comitts the same mistakes, with Sylvia, Couture, Jones, now Silva. He doesn’t keep the distance and gets sucked into other fighter’s game plans (low fight IQ?). I think that he should change some things in his training camp. I know that he has quality team, but clearly something’s not right, and it’s definitely not his technical skills

It is definitely something mental with Vera. His wife (Kerry) shows more of a killer instinct in her fights than Brandon does.

It’s amazing the difference between Ariel and Franklin. Ariel is so smooth and quick with his questions. Franklin acts like he is reading off a card or trying to memorize his questions. Maybe if Josh Gross could get his credentials then he could be doing these interviews. It won’t happen though.

Biggest tool in the shed

McNeil is so awkward when asking his questions. It’s like he doesn’t know exactly what his questions mean as he’s asking them. He’s horrible on MMA Live as well. He’s such a poser.

Ariel keeps it real. He puts fighters & fans at ease. The Volkman and Baroni interviews are good examples of Helwani at his best, he can connect with loner-type guys and emotional guys. I don’t think anyone else can get fighters to be so candid.

Yes.

This fight needs to happen. I personally saw this fight going to Frankie seeing how in my eyes he won all the rounds after getting destroyed in the first. I can also see how a draw can happen cause you could argue that Gray won round 3, i dont see him winning round 5 though. Anthony Pettis needs to sit his ass on the bench and work his way up. I think a Pettis vs Tyson Griffen would be a great fight, Tyson is coming of some losses and Pettis has way to much fucking hype.

I want them to fight as soon as the possibly can. Edgar will win for sure next time. In this fight we saw him pick Grau apart after getting destroyed in round one. He also nullified everything Gray tried to do on the ground.

Crap, crap, crap! Frankie won that fight. Dana should have just said nothing is announced until he got back in the office and watched it again. He just said in the interview that he thought Frankie won 3 rounds. How is that a draw? IMO the judges robbed Edgar of the greatest comeback EVER! That’s why Frankie tossed the belt on the floor. He knows he won that.

I didn’t think it was a mismatch but I thought Leban was going to knock him out in a war. Knocking out Leban is no joke. Besides Stann only Anderson Silva has handled Leben like that. Incredibly impressive win for Stann and I would like to see him matched up with Bisping next tbh. Stann would be the perfect champion for the UFC. I don’t think he has the skills to do it but his personality is one of the best I’ve ever seen. He reminds me of Franklin because he’s so humble and respectful towards his opponents.

He doesn’t want insurance companies to have the choice about paying him.

That’s not how you cut cost or improve health care. You do it by making people pay out of their own pockets for the less proven stuff and making cost effective treatments and prevention (I’m not talking about back pain, but general health) more accessible to those who were previously without coverage.

Volkmann is either being selfish or is just naive. Money doesn’t grow on trees.
