Featherweight Shake-Up

Maybe it's because it is an active division with numerous fighters in different organizations, but in less than one week 5 of the top ten featherweights as ranked on this site and others have lost fights. I defer to this sites ranking for easy reference link.

UFC 125: Resolution

Nunes defeated Brown via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)

Poirier defeated Grispi via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Brown was ranked #2 and Grispi ranked #7  was almost a co main event fighter until his opponent the featherweight champ Jose Aldo had to pull out due to injury and Dustin Poirier stepped in.

SRC: Soul To Fight

Hioki defeated Sandro via unanimous decision to become the new SRC Featherweight Champion.

Maeda defeated Kanehara via TKO (Punches) at 1:27 in round 1.

Sandro ranked #4 was looking like the Shane Carwin/George Forman of the division with his recent streak of KO wins and was thoroughly outboxed and outgrappled by Hioki ranked #8. Also on this card had the former Sengoku featherweight champ Kanehara ranked # 10 getting pistol whipped by Yoshihiro  Maeda.

K-1 Dynamite!! 2010

Takaya defeated Fernandes via unanimous decision to become the new DREAM Featherweight Champion.

In their rematch Hiroyuki Takaya ranked #15 was able to best the man who beat him in Dreams featherweight tournament final, former champ Bibiano Fernandes ranked #5.

Most of these defeats came at the hands of other top 25 fighters and some came from guys not even ranked that high. It can be deduced that either this division needs more refinement before we can seriously look at a fighter in the division as an elite competitor. Or half the top 10 guys don't do well on new years weekend.

As much as it pains me to admit this as an ardent Aldo supporter, the featherweight division while very exciting needs to stew a bit before it can attain the luster of more established divisions.

So what you're saying

is that the rankings aren’t static, and are constantly changing?

Actually it looks like he went through the trouble to list the fights and their rankings prefight

What a jerk, right?

I want everyone you mentioned in the same pot so we can truly see who’s the best.

Luke: That was a good one.

idk honestly

I am just stunned at how many guys who I would of picked to win, went out and took an L.

I do believe rankings have their place as a template or list of the best guys in a division. But I can’t remember another short period of time where so many top ranked fighters lost in the same div over a short amount of time.

ZOMG the FW division is unpredictable, therefore it lacks "lustre"

That’s exactly what makes the division interesting to me. It’s the fact that so many of the top guys are potentially at a similar skill level and on any given night any one of them can beat another.

All of this action over the week made it the most intriguing division in all of MMA to me, and therefore it has the most “lustre” of all.

I agree.

It shows there is no huge talent level gap between the top guys and some unproven talent out there. I suppose you could look at that as a negative but I see it as a positive. It makes it very intriguing going forward. I expect those lighter weight divisions rankings to remain quick changing.

Just BE.

in fw there is aldo

then everyone else, id like to see who he fights next omigawa-mendes is in a month and the winner there could theoretically be ready by april or may which would work nicely for aldo’s return fight

aldo might be ready sooner though which would make me wanna throw the hominick-roop winner in with him

some top fighter were ranked above they should be.
Gamburyan #2? even if he defeated Brown, he hadn’t defeated any other top 10 FW. Matt Brown has 2 victories over faber, but after the way he lost to Aldo and Manny he can’t be #3. Fernandes in the top 5? he got dominated by Kid (undersized FW) and Faber, b4 winning Dream FW tournament by the narrowest of the margin against #15 FW and controversially defeat Hansen.
Hioki was ranked way too low, for a guy who has been top FW for almost a 5 years, the most decorated FW besides Aldo, only losing three times in 7 years and the three times with controversial decisions. And MMAWEEKLY doesn’t even have him in the top ten!
in my opinion all these recent “surprising” wins are more due to bad rankings than anything

don't get me wrong

Aldo is still my fave champ even though Edgar continues to prove he a truly remarkable fighter.

But aldos greatness imo is his ability to do massive damage with the smallest openings. It was most evident against gamburyan when he tagged him with an uppercut and dropped him into the turtle position. 90% of fighters would of either took mannys back to go for a choke or pepper his forearms with strikes. Aldo did take his back but the fact that he picked the perfect shot to ko manny was scary.

Most fighters need the blinds up and the window open to finish an opponent, aldo can do it with the blinds down and the window cracked enough to let a breeze in.

People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

Does anyone think Grispi would have any chance against Aldo now? Josh might have died if Jose was fighting the Grispi from Saturady night.
