UFC 125 Results: Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar Deserve a Rematch

Photo by James Law for AOL Fanhouse

It looked like it was going to be over quick. Gray Maynard rocked Frankie Edgar in the first round of their lightweight title fight at UFC 125, leaving the champion on wobbly legs for most of the round's five minutes. Edgar took a horrible beating, eating punch after punch. If the referee had decided to stop the fight at certain points, it wouldn't have been the worst call ever. No champion has ever taken such an extended whooping in UFC history, not even Brock Lesnar in his UFC 116 battle with Shane Carwin.

And then it was like the first round never happened at all. Edgar was back to his old self as the second round began, moving well and landing regularly with a crisp right hand. What followed was one of the best fights in UFC history. We've seen lots of fights that featured fighters trading evenly, but rarely fights so evenly fought with such a high level of technique. These weren't winging overhand leads. Both men were putting punches together in combination, looking to wrestle, and even attempting and defending submissions.

This was what mixed martial arts is all about. This was art- a brutal artistry for certain, but art nonetheless. In the end, I didn't mind that the fight was scored a draw. I had it a draw on my own score card giving Maynard the first and third rounds (10-8 Round one) and Edgar rounds two, four, and five. It was as evenly fought as any bout I've seen. No one deserved to lose.

Unfortunately, we will all be losers because of the UFC's insistence on booking fights so far in advance. We just saw a championship fight end in a draw, not a boring fight that no one wants to see again, but an action packed extravaganza. Should Frankie Edgar really go from this to fighting the WEC's lame duck champion Anthony Pettis?

I like Pettis for his potential and think he has a bright future. But why should he be given a title shot when he's never beaten a legitimate top ten fighter? We don't need to see Edgar-Pettis. We need to see Edgar vs. Maynard III and we need to see it as soon as possible.

I implore you to write to Dana White on twitter and ask him to do the right thing. Pettis can wait until there is a true winner in this epic battle between Edgar and Maynard. I, for one, would like five more rounds of top notch action from the best fighters on the planet. Let the champion and his challenger settle the score first - then give Pettis his time in the spotlight. This is what the sport has been waiting for, our first chance at an epic trilogy, the kind that define legacies in boxing. Let's see it Dana.

I don't

Maynard won but judges are biased towards Edgar. He lost the first fight to BJ too. Why should he get these decisions when he should be 1-2 in his last 3 fights?

Most experts I know scored the first BJ Edgar fight for BJ. I did too. I scored this one for Maynard. How is that being delusional?? Edgar should be 1-2 in his last three fights.

No I don’t know what you mean, most “experts” I “know” thought Edgar won both Penn fights and that the only really bad thing in the first one was the one judge giving every round to Edgar.

I guess I could go back and dig for for all the post fight press but what I remember people being upset about wasn’t the win (it was a close fight) but the one judge that gave all the rounds to Edgar. I don’t remember there being all that much controversy about the fight nor do I remember most of the experts scoring it for Penn. Heck when have the so called internet “experts” agreed on anything?

Why do we even have judges? Someone should declare you the King of MMA judging and all decisions should come down to what you think after the fights.

i dont know that people were saying that it was a good decision

but they were saying it was either Maynard winning or a draw. So given the two options, the judges picked one that most people on this site agree with. It would have been the same reaction had Maynard got the nod for the decision.

And im not mad at all about the decision but i understand what sheeple is saying, Edgar always stays busy, that style looks good for judging because it can be deceiving. People have less of a problem for a judge scoring the fight for the one who is “out-working” the other, or looks to be doing.

Edgar getting

a 50-45 score in the first BJ fight and a 48-46 in this fight shows that judges favor Frankie, right there.

a 48-47 score for Edgar can be argued but not 48-46, or 50-45 for that matter.

No one knows who Pettis is or has watched him fight. More people saw this PPV than probably ever watched Pettis. Just think about that for a second. If they’re delusional enough to believe that they can sell more PPVs off of some highlights of Pettis doing flying kicks than a rematch of an all time classic, they’re in trouble.

The more intriguing angle is Jose Aldo. Since Grispi just got abused, what else is really left for Aldo at 145? There were already steady calls for him to move up to LW after his last fight.

Give it 6 months. Obviously the division is bereft of talent. Only the hardiest of promotion loving drones can ignore that after watching Brown and Grispi get beat up. The UFC money will draw the real talent there and you’ll get a challenger.

But the whole thing going into this was all the talk about how much this fight wasn’t going to sell because it was going to be a “boring main event.” So that really shouldn’t apply In this case, the reaction to the fight is going to be a much better indication of what people want to see, not the buyrate.

I think it depends on how you view succession of the belt.

I’m arguing that it’s like poker – once you bet money (the belt), it’s no longer yours. You have to win the pot (fight) to keep it. In case of a zero-sum prize, if there’s no winner, no one receives the prize (in poker, you can split the pot in a draw, so the analogy breaks down). You (and everyone, it seems) believes that it’s something that you have to lose, and if you don’t lose the fight, you should keep it by default. I don’t see the defending champ as having any special claim to the belt that would dictate his possession in the result of no clear winner.

I’ve never thought of it like that. Maybe my thinking is wrong, but I’ve always considered the belt ownership neutral in the fight, with the winner walking away with it (see my poker analogy above).

In the event of a tie, champion retains. Gray came close, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

I wonder if Anthony Pettis could step aside, thus allowing us to see the rematch. Pettis could be rewarded for his loyalty by being given a good match on a big selling card with a nice tidy purse attached. If he beats a legitimate top ten opponent on a high ratings card then he can be next in line, if not, then he probably didn’t deserve the title shot anyway and could become a great learning curve for the young fighter.

What we need to admit is.....

The ninja kick is what we are really supporting. If Pettis won a fairly uneventful decision we would care less about seeing him fight one of these guys. Since he did the ninja kick, we want the possibility of that happening again. LOL.

by KidThunder on Jan 2, 2011 1:18 AM EST reply actions

maynard should not have won

10-8 maynard obviously
10-9 edgar
10-9 edgar due to controlling stand up for 4 minutes and nearly getting the sub when maynard had a TD and did nothing with it
10-9edgar
last round could go either way but probably edgars

so it should have been 48-46 edgar but 47-47 isnt ridiculous

A draw is the same thing as a title defense. Let’s move on to Edgar-Pettis, a much closer fight on paper than most people would have pegged it as a couple hours ago.

by smoogy2 on Jan 2, 2011 1:22 AM EST up reply actions

A draw isn’t a decisive outcome. Let’s settle this first and never again give a title shot to someone who has never beaten a top fighter in his weight class.

Edgar is the guy who looks like he’s progressed against elite competition. If anything, this fight looks far less competitive than it did 2 hours ago, unless you’re one of the people seriously deluded into thinking that Pettis winning the WEC title was as impressive as beating UFC lightweights.

What a sad choice.

by VirtualBalboa on Jan 2, 2011 1:26 AM EST up reply actions

Pettis is a much more skilled kickboxer than Maynard. He has the creativity to end the fight if he gets someone hurt that bad. He definitely wouldn’t throw 100 left hooks in a row, at least.

Dustin Poirer just took a huge dump on everybody’s FW rankings. Pettis is not nearly as far from the top at LW as some would put him.

by smoogy2 on Jan 2, 2011 1:33 AM EST up reply actions

Pettis hasn’t displayed that creativity against a single proven opponent. Not one.

And yeah, Poirier just took a dump on the FW rankings. So did Nunes. You’d think the lesson would be that the WEC wasn’t actually that talented, but apparently that obvious fact still eludes.

Only one solution to make everone happy:

Book an immediate rematch for Edgar/Maynard and put Pettis up against Guida. Guida should have a pretty good chance of beating him and with 4 wins he’ll be knocking on the top 10 and look like a worthy contender. I say give Gray an immediate fight with the Edgar Pettis winner

I had the fight even coming into round five and scored the final frame a draw. Anthony Pettis and Benson Henderson were also even coming into the last round. What was the difference? Pettis pulled off the most clutch move in MMA history to leave no doubt in the judges minds. Edgar and Maynard didn’t do that. As much as we need a rematch, the cluch showtime performance, which made ESPN’s top ten of the entire year, shouldn’t be penalized.

Let Gray fight the winner. Aussie George and Jim Miller can sort out who deserves a shot after all this.

how did you give round 3 to maynard?

edgar controlled the stand up for 4 minutes then gray got a takedown. he did nothing wih the takedown and frankie had 2 sub attempts and nearly ended it if it wasnt for the bell.

fair enough if after getting the takedown if there was some gnp or even lnp (to make a case for the round) but there wasnt. the takedown put gray in a bad position if anything. i dont understand how you can give gray that round for a takedown

by Studsie on Jan 2, 2011 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

Fightmetric and plenty of MMA journalist gave round three to Maynard, it’s not that big of a stretch.

by who me on Jan 2, 2011 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

regardless of that do you honestly believe a takedown is better than a tight sub? then add on the fact that edgar was winning the stand up…

by Studsie on Jan 2, 2011 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

I didn’t think Edgar was really winning the stand up in the third so right off we have a real difference of opinion without the takedown coming into it. It was a real close round.

Everyone sees things differently, the point is that scoring the third for Maynard isn’t that big of a stretch, lots of people did including the people who generate the fight statistics(heck even Dana White called it that way).

by who me on Jan 2, 2011 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

i agree the 3rd was dificult to score. lets just say the stand up was even or very slightly in favour of either fighter it doesnt really matter, my opinion is that gray did nothing with the takedown whereas edgar attempted subs and nearly finished him. i just think the takedown isnt a round winner if you nearly get subbed because of it so i favour edgar for nearly finishing the fight rather than gray for a td

by Studsie on Jan 2, 2011 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

We don’t know if Edgar nearly finished the fight or not, that’s the problem with sub attempts that get cut off like that. Gray actually had two takedowns at the end of the round as Edgar got up and he put him back down, not sure how that would score but i would think that two completed takedowns would generally be seen as being worth more than two sub-attempts or at the very least they would negate each other.

by who me on Jan 2, 2011 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

if someone gets right back up from a takedown to me it basically cancels out the takedown.

1st sub attempt wasnt going to score too much but the second was tight from what i saw so id count it as a near fight finish. to me thats better than a takedown which he does nothing with.

Surely there’s a relevant difference between deciding not to award a promised title shot because you don’t like the winner, and delaying a promised title shot because an instant classic title fight ended with an nigh-unprecedented draw (only one other title fight has gone to a draw in UFC history, two if you count the old superfight title).

I think the UFC does not want to back down on their promise to give the Bendo/Pettis winner the unification title shot and they also don’t want to devalue the WEC belt (although it should be devalued).

There should be a rubber match but I can see why they gave it to Pettis or else the UFC would be gunning for having every weight class have issues with who is getting a title shot. Don’t make promises you know you might not keep.

But i’m pretty sure after people see the fight itself Maynard Edgar 3 will catch some serious ratings.. there was nothing to not like about the fight

THat's a ridiculous statement

EIther it’s a draw, or a Maynard victory. That’s it.

I'm glad I bought this fight

I only bought it for Gomi, but I was happy with the final results. Maynard/Edgar should never be disrespected for their styles again.

It’s the right decision. Pettis is a WECer that would run out of table scraps to eat while waiting. But seriously, the LW division is too stacked; already backed up from the BJ Penn rematch.

PS Dana white ducking the presser? draw + Overeem = ttyl

Pettis hasn't fought a legit top 10 guy?

Fuck, he hasn’t fought a legit top 25 guy. Ben Henderson has struggled greatly against other unranked fighters (Cerrone, Varner, Roller). Pettis is a unique and interesting talent, but you’re being too kind to his resume.

You are correct. I think Pettis is a good prospect though.

wtf

Bendo finished all the opponents you claim he struggled against? I know it is cool to shit on the WEC after the fact, but come the hell on good sir.

People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.

ufc 125 "resolution"

kinda ironic considering how at the end of the night we were left with absolutely nothing resolved. there were no answers and absolutely no resolution. these two lightweights are on a meteoric rise destined to be rivals like superman and lex luther or batman and the joker. of course we need an immediate rematch. of course pettis can wait.

The sea refuses no river. The idea is to remain in a state of constant departure while always arriving. It saves on introductions and goodbyes. The ride does not require explanation - just occupance.

Snowden STEALING gimmicks
I implore you to write to Dana White on twitter and ask him to do the right thing. Pettis can wait until there is a true winner in this epic battle between Edgar and Maynard. I, for one, would like five more rounds of top notch action from the best fighters on the planet. Let the champion and his challenger settle the score first – then give Pettis his time in the spotlight. This is what the sport has been waiting for, our first chance at an epic trilogy, the kind that define legacies in boxing. Let’s see it Dana.
