Bellator's New Deal Likely To Have Them Going Head Up Against UFC and Strikeforce Events
This has been crossposted from CagesideSeats, the new home for the writers you loved (and me) from WatchKalibRun. Now, it does have some wrasslin' stories on there, but they are easily skippable if you're of that mindset. Oh, also if you wouldn't mind giving this article at Cagepotato a look. Something I wrote as well.
"Now we're not the type of people to say 'We told you so' but we TOLD YOU SO."
-- Bobby "The Brain" Heenan and "Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig, following Ric Flair's Royal Rumble win in 1992
When Bellator signed a deal with MTV2 to air their weekly programming, many were rejoiced at the idea that the company would be featured in over 80 million homes as a sort of sign that Bellator was going to turn the corner despite murmurs that they were close to going under. Fans were reassured by Rebney and others that this deal was the beginning of a new day for Bellator in spite of the disappointment fans felt as a result of not signing with FX network as had previously been rumored. Well, there was at least one person who saw the slow train coming.
"Sorry, this deal is a terrible deal. It's basically signing a death warrant."
-- Anonymous
Now, the above statement was made weeks ago right when the news was made. The 80 million homes number was debunked easily when it was pointed out that being available in 80 million homes doesn't mean that 80 million people watch it. You see while MTV2 may be in more homes than FSN, that doesn't mean that more people are likely to watch it than FSN. Especially for MMA. Especially for non-UFC MMA. I'd wager that a UFC event on MTV2 would pull less than 300K viewers. Why? Because no one knows where MTV2 is.
While FSN maybe be available in less homes, it has a prime deal with the cable companies to appear in the double-digit channels. It's usually nestled somewhere near ESPN or other channels like SPIKE or Versus. So if you're a channel-flipping, you're much more likely to come across FSN than say MTV2 which is located in the Boondocks. MTV2 is usually in the 200s or 300s near MMA demographic friendly channels like Logo and Hallmark for Women. What's the first rule they teach you in business class? "Greed is good" OK, the second rule? LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. Why did Marlo and Avon beef? It wasn't because Marlo killed Avon's boy Rock-Rock on Pinsey and Gold. It wasn't because Avon slept with Marlo's girl. It was those prime avenue corners. First question Avon asked when getting out of jail is "What corners we got?" So while MTV3 may be in more homes, they are in a piss-poor location.
Our anonymous soothsayer was rebutted with the idea that Bellator's events would no longer be pre-empted by high school chess tournaments and shown at 3am like they had been on FSN. Once people were able to consistently watch Bellator's product at a set time and date, the company would grow. Right? Well, what's worse that pre-emption? How about directly competing with the UFC and Strikeforce? You see, the dupes at MTV2 thought the best night for a weekly tournament of MMA is the same night of the week the biggest two promotions hold their events. Bellator will be running concurrently (or at least semi-concurrently) as other bigger MMA programming. What better way to make your MTV2 debut than against Strikeforce's March 5th Showtime event featuring Dan Henderson vs Feijao for the 205 title. Oh it gets better. Let's follow that up by going head to head with UFC 128 featuring Rashad Evans and Shogun Rua. The UFC event will almost assuredly come with prelims which extends the comingling of the two products.
Now faced with the UFC (or even Strikeforce) and Bellator, which product do you think the casual audience (the one most needed for Bellator to grow) will choose. Hell, which do you think the hardcores will choose. Unless of course, they decide to not run Bellator in prime time which would be a stupid decision in and of itself.

This just speeds up Bellator's purchase by either of the two
This town is big enough for the UFC and Strikeforce. But not for all three.

I like Bellator just in that they sign fighters/prospects that I haven’t heard of who tend to be very exciting. However, using a professional wrestling example, I just see Bellator as ECW in that it offers something different, but just doesn’t really have room in the market to be a national product and still make money while competing with the bigger orgs.
I won't jump off the bandwagon just because you lost.
Big enough for 3
They is room for 3, but they have to know their role. They could be an excellent development league for the big show, but their champs carry no clout. Their champs are damn good fighters, but fans don’t regard them as the best and they are locking them up in long-term contracts. They could develop a lot of fan interest if they functioned as an official development league for the UFC. I don’t know if the UFC would be interested, but casual fans put more credence in being in the UFC than being the champ in Bellator.
Yea I agree with this
Bellator being an official farm system. Champions default to the UFC after so long. Perhaps struggling UFC fighters sent down to the minors etc.

Constantly giving away your best fighters and biggest draws for free isn’t a winning business strategy.
Can't Afford Them
No, but Bellator couldn’t afford to pay top talent w/ their last deal, and I honestly doubt this one is much better. I heard that they were getting 70k per show on FSN. Even if you double that, you can’t afford to pay any top fighters. If they got a royalty for sending a fighter to the UFC or had an agreement to sell the contract, it is much better than paying them more than you recieve in revenues. I don’t know what Eddie Alvarez gets paid, but last I knew he had Monte Cox for an agent who has managed plenty of top fighters. I find it hard to believe that Monte didn’t get Eddie a pretty lucrative deal to tie him down w/ Bellator. However, he is the same agent that let a 310lb Sylvia get his dick knocked off by Ray Mercer!
What Draws?
They don’t sell 500 tickets to most events, they don’t have any draws. They have a lot of good fighters, but nobody is selling tickets.
Bellator doesn’t sell the gate they sell a site agreement so they don’t really care what the gate is. But it will keep getting harder and harder to sell that site agreement.
Jonathan Snowden pointed out in an article a couple of weeks ago that Strikeforce does some of the Challengers shows as site agreements as well. So come up with X dollars and we will bring the show to your venue.
If true, that they hold with a Saturday night schedule, the only way I think they might even have a possibility of some success is paring their costs way down and marketing very young, Basically the teenagers that would love to watch UFC but can’t afford the ppvs. This means they would be more focused on the aethstetics and style (think quick, flashy, funny, and stupid)then the fights and booking cheaper less talented “personalities”. I hope I’m wrong because even if they succeeded they be dead to fans like me.
Yeah I thought this when I heard, they are so retarded.
I will watch, I’ll DVR them but umm Bellator, do you think I’m actually gonna watch your shit live instead of Hendo/Feijao? DO you honestly think I’m gonna not watch UFC 128 which top to bottom is the most stacked card, with Benavidez, Barboza/Njokuani, Cane/Vemola, Manvel/Assuncao, Miller/Catone, Pyle/Almeida, Pelligrino/Tibau, with Cro Cop/SHaub, Nate/Akiyama, Faber/Wineland, SHogun/Rashad Miller/SHalorus, do you honestly think anyone is gonna watch Bellator live instead of that UFC card?
Now DVR will help cause all us real mma fans will be DVR’ing Bellator when teh UFC and SF events are on but this is just stupid, they should go to Friday nights, they would only have to compete with SF Challengers which is like once every couple of months, so maybe two SF challengers shows per Bellator season, the rest they would have to themselves, so why not do that instead of going head to head with SF and UFC on Sat? They are gonna get killed.
UFC should just buy Bellator, it would kill off a competitor and they would grab some of the best prospects in the sport.
They would get top 5 LW Eddie Alvarez, Lombard, Askren, Hornbuckle, Good, Hawn, Lozano, Warren, Soto, Pitbull, Reis, Konrad, Grove, Raphael Davis, all the other tournament fighters, all the newly signed prospects.
Honestly I dont think the UFC can buy them, they dont have the roster space, SF could and would def bulk their roster up big time with a ton of top prospects that could fill up their divs with future top fighters and give them Eddie and Askren as contenders right away, another top HW prospect, LHW prospect and would give them a FW and BW div.
Personally I’d rather see them in the UFC but I dont think the UFC could buy them and have room for them, they wouldnt buy them to take a few fighters and ditch the rest, its not worth it.
why buy a dying product when u can just wait for it to be dead
the UFCs just gonna pick over the carcass of bellator, pick up who they want and let the rest go back to the regional field
"I have smoked weed with alot of UFC champions" - Joe Rogan
Rebney way, way over paid for some of his talent. Roger Huerta is one of many examples. Rebney has tried to pawn them off on Coker but he is asking way to much for them. So no deal is going to get done on the talent until the plug is pulled on Bellator and Rebney is forced to let them go at a more reasonable price. I don’t expect them to do to many shows before it becomes obvious this new deal isn’t going to work.
I really wish Bellator would stick around though with out Rebney. But I don’t see how it can. When the end comes I just hope that the fighters aren’t tied up for endless lengths of time, unable to fight, like they normally are.

I wonder what Bellator's logic is...
for having their fights on the same night as their competitors. And I too have no clue where MTV2 is. When you have channels that go up into the 1700’s I generally stay below 100.
Maybe they're looking for a buyer specifically

I'd like to see them go under/be bought
Like I said, if Bellator and DREAM stopped promoting, their guys would more than likely be grabbed up by UFC, StrikeForce, Sengoku, etc…
We’d see more of the best spread out across fewer promotions.

Whew. Thank god someone “easily” debunked that. That is some serious insight.
It was a stupid argument to begin with
Sure, it’s available in more homes, but it’s not watched in more homes.
Nobody knows where it’s located.
It’s in a bad section of channels with low flip-through ability.

But what if MTV2 shows reruns of The Wire as a lead in to Bellator?

like 3 people watch strikeforce and around 1 and half will watch Bellator. They are both doomed.
However MMA on MTV2 may not be. MTV2 will likely stay in the MMA business like FSN and HDNET because it’s cheap live programming…. It wont be with a promotion losing millions though… more of the MFC variety.
Maybe a UFC prelim
It would be ok w/ me to see the occasional UFC prelim on there. It seems like Dana is willing to show them about anywhere and it would do pretty big numbers on there, but Bellator won’t draw jack shit. However, I’m sure that coming from a deal that was paying 70k/show, Bellator commands less money than Anderson Silva putting on his jock in the locker room would.
What we NEED is a Proposition Joe to ally the disparate talent that nobody ever sees with the UFC’s prime real estate.

Yeah, FSN South on my cable package is one channel below ESPN and four channels above Spike. I don’t even get MTV2.
