World MMA Light Heavyweight Scouting Report: #1 - Marcos Rogerio "Pezao" de Lima

Marcos Rogerio "Pezao" de Lima ranks at #1 on our 2011 World MMA Light Heavyweight Scouting Report. Photo by Portal Do Vale Tudo.

After an exhaustive survey of the worldwide light heavyweight prospect pool that involved over fifty names initially, we've finally worked our way down to the #1 ranked prospect on our 2011 World MMA Light Heavyweight Scouting Report. Marcos Rogerio de Lima (8-0) takes our top spot as one of the most highly-anticipated light heavyweight prospects we've seen come out of Brazil in a few years. While the lighter weight classes have been flooded by Brazilian talent in the past, the 205 pound weight class only produces two, maybe three, solid prospects every couple of years, the most recent being Thiago Silva and Rafael Cavalcante.

If you're a man who loves brutal Muay Thai beatdowns, devastating knockout power, and pedal to the metal idealogy in a fighter's gameplan, you're in for a treat.

Offensive Skills: Pezao's arsenal consists of your standard combination of Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu that we see from most fighters coming out of Brazil. The significant difference between Pezao and the rest of pack is that he packs wrecking balls in his hands and dynamite in his kicks. The heavily-credentialed Muay Thai striker turned mixed martial artist is one of the most aggressive strikers on our countdown, and his intimidating style and demeanor, i.e. swagger, in the ring is great to watch.

His success mostly stems from the fact that he has a lot of diversity in his attacks. Not only does he aggressively hunt for knockouts, but he's shown destructive force in his kicking game. Front kicks, leg kicks, body kicks... you think of it, he's probably knocked someone out with it. His front kicks are especially impressive as he's adept at landing on the chin, and he's very good at masking his initial attack and blasting away at his opponent's legs. Think of Pezao as a much powerful version of Edson Barboza.

Defensive Skills: Pezao relies heavily on his intimidating style and constant pressure as his means to avoiding damage. Most opponents can't handle the pressure of his offensive onslaught, and the idea of trying to slip a punch through Pezao's fury is a risky bet to take. One punch is likely all he needs to land, thus most opponents try to tie him up or maintain a safe distance.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a way to keep your body from being brutalized by Pezao's attacks. He uses an equally damaging distance kicking game to keep opponents away as well, utilizing front kicks and leg kicks to pepper away at his opponent's body and legs. Eventually, his opponents can't handle the pain, and they begin to fade... wobbling around the ring or opening up their defenses to one of Pezao's patented rushes.

While his offense is his best defense, his actual defense mechanisms such as his takedown defense and ability to reverse positions on the ground are admirable. His size is tough for opponents to handle in the clinch, and even power grapplers like Paulo Filho had a difficult time putting him down and controlling him. He'll make you work hard for a ground war, and that usually plays to his advantage as the fight drags on.

Progression: His ground game is his biggest weakness, but as we saw in the Paulo Filho bout -- he has improved enough to know how to escape dangerous positions off his back. He was able to escape Filho's top control game by sliding toward the fence and wall-walking his way to his feet, but Filho was gasping for air and already in a dream world from Pezao's brutal kicks and punches on the feet.

It's hard to say where Pezao is currently at in his development on the floor, but he does have one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu trainers in the world to help him succeed.

Environment: Pezao is a member of Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The team is headed by legendary Brazilian jiu-jitsu trainer Marco Barbosa, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and Judo black belt who is considered one of the most credentialed trainers in the world in both arts. The camp also houses welterweight prospect Gil de Freitas, and Thiago Silva has been known to seek out Marco Barbosa to sharpen his Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills.

Star-divide

Potential: Pezao could easily be a Thiago Silva-type of talent in the UFC if he continues to progress his grappling ability. In my mind, he could surpass what Thiago Silva brings to the table as he has the power of Silva with the added bonus of a devastating clinch and kicking game. Don't get me wrong, Silva has those attributes as well, but it's difficult to ignore the background and experience that Pezao has in the Muay Thai ring.

Under the tutelage of Marco Barbosa, I expect to see Pezao make strides in his jiu-jitsu ground game in the coming year, and I fully expect the UFC to sign him by late 2011, possible for the UFC Rio card. Hopefully visa issues won't be a concern for his future with the promotion, but one thing is for certain -- Pezao will make waves in the UFC.

i know filho has officially went crazy and all but,

If you don’t get tapped by him I feel like you can say your jiu jitsu is pretty legit, at least defensively. I haven’t seen that fight. Is it on YouTube?

Here's hoping that Marcos gets on the prelims.

And I’ll equally hope that if he gets signed for a fight, it gets aired either on TV or streamed online by the UFC.

Yeah good choice for the top LHW prospect, I completely forgot about him when I was thinking who could be the top LHW prospect, but yeah he will be signed this year, SF, Bellator or UFC def will sign him, I think he is better off in the UFC though.

HW is gonna be interesting to see who you come up with, I dont know many HW right now, Afrozilla and Tony Johnson I know will be two of them.

by Aldo27 on Jan 18, 2011 1:24 PM EST reply actions

We may wait on HW and do BW and FW first due to the shortage… maybe some others will surface over the next month.

If MW was challenge, finding 10 HW prospects worthy of being mentioned as “guys to watch” is damn near impossible. I was watching some of Guram Gugenishvili’s fights earlier today, and if he is any indicator of who is going to be on the list, then the future is looking quite bleak for the HW division.

by KAN0 on Jan 18, 2011 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Smoogy and I have debated on doing HW at all. We’ve even debated on simply doing a top 5 list at HW because most of the prospects have zero skill and just brawl their way to wins.

any plan for any kind of female fighter list/s?

Probably not. We’re already getting run ragged by the current planned classes.

The Strikeforce prelims for the Diaz vs Cyborg card are going to have two women’s bouts, and two of the female fighters have no professional MMA fights while the other two have one win and one loss. With that type of record or just no professional MMA record at all, I can’t imagine Leland and Smoogy doing any kind of female fighter list. Don’t get me wrong because I would like to see one though.

I won't jump off the bandwagon just because you lost.

by chrisbboy82 on Jan 19, 2011 2:13 AM EST up reply actions

And I think doing a list for BW and FW would be a great idea. With the growth of those two divisions surely sent into hyper-drive by their inclusion into the UFC, the talent pool at BW at FW is only going to get deeper and richer.

by KAN0 on Jan 18, 2011 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I’d skip HW right now and do BW and FW and then go back to HW.

I mean sure you can find 10 HW but are they gonna be quality HW? I mean Tony and Afrozilla are two of them and I’m sure their are a few good HW prospects out their.

BW and FW I’m def more interested in seeing.

Alot of Brazilian and Japanese fighters I expect will be on these lists.

So its only UFC, SF, Bellator, Dream and SRC that you consider the major orgs? Like Shooto, Deep, Pancrase etc fighters are eligible to make the list?

Makes sense

Hoping mark ellis and jared rosholt win a fight or two in the meantime? Those guys will both make some kind of impact when they’re ready, although that is a while off. I really like johnson and afrozilla, but there’s not much else out there. Guganishvili I’m sure will get a nod, and maybe ajlin ahmic. Not a lot out there.

by Tag01 on Jan 18, 2011 2:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

We actually debated whether we would include guys who we know are transitioning to MMA and are heavily-credentialed wrestlers who have yet to fight in the sport. That’s how thin the HW talent pool is right now.

I understand most of the top guys you talk about being in the UFC, he would be good for the UFC, make waves in the UFC etc, but if SF or Bellator signed him do you think thats a negative?

Like Villefort or Pezao are such talented prospects do you think its a bad thing if they dont end up in the UFC?

The UFC is the top mma org and has the top fighter in every div and most of hte top talent in each div, not saying its bad if SF or Bellator signed them but do you think its good if SF signed Villefort or Pezao and not the UFC?

Sure they could devlop them into top fighters but down the road not being able to fight the best guys and prove how good they really are, is that why you list them as good fits for the UFC?

Would you be ok with Bellator signing him in a weak LHW div where you wont see him fight top guys.

by Aldo27 on Jan 18, 2011 2:17 PM EST reply actions

No, Strikeforce could develop a solid LHW division with many of these guys, but the fact of the matter is that the UFC is king in Brazil. All these guys have talked endlessly in interviews about fighting in the UFC. Not some other promotion. Strikeforce has an uphill battle in that regards, which is where guys that Strikeforce has already grabbed need to help in spreading the knowledge of the wealth and exposure they can also attain there.

by Leland Roling on Jan 18, 2011 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah not talking about where they want to sign, I get they know UFC is king, I’m asking you personally, would you rather see a top prospect like Pezao sign with SF and in a lesser div maybe get brought up faster and could rise to stardom faster or would you rather him in teh UFC, maybe go unnoticed for a while considering how many top LHW the uFC has and Jones, Bader, Davis, Gustafsson are these great prospects he could probably be lost in the shuffle for a while and have to win some fights before fans would take notice, but even then it would be a while before he would be in the upper part of the div, and maybe he never gets there.

So would you rather these prospects end up in SF or Bellator instead of the UFC or do you want to see the best of the best prospects in the uFC cause thats where the top guys are and you can find out if they are the real deal cause if they can do it in the UFC they are the very best.

The one thing is say SF signed him, and he started off and fought Britt, won then fought OSP and won then got someone like Mo and won and then got a title shot vs Feijao/Hendo/Mosuasi, whoever was the champ and won, he would be the SF LHW champ and unbeaten and everyone would be saying how good he is but the question will come up, can he beat SHogun, Rashad, Jones, Bader, Machida, Page, THiago etc, and thats always gonna be their, .

So I’m asking do you personally care where these prospects sign? DO you just feel like they are good young fighters and they deserve a shot, doesnt matter what org, or do you want certain guys to go to certain orgs, maybe a guy who is a solid prospect should go to SF but the more elite guy should go to UFC, something like that, or do you not care who goes where?

by Aldo27 on Jan 18, 2011 2:36 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn’t mind seeing Pezao sign with Strikeforce or Bellator. It’ll give him a taste of North American opponents, allow him to continue progressing his ground game, and save him the agony of being throw to the sharks if the UFC chooses to do that. I doubt they would, but ya never know.

I have a question about two prospects

I was wondering about two guys you didn’t mention, guto innocente (who I didn’t expect to make the cut) and jonas billstein (who I thought would). What do you think about them?

by Tag01 on Jan 18, 2011 2:38 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I watched quite a bit of Billstein. I wasn’t that impressed.

don’t like the way he jumps to a double stamp at 5:42 vs. Villegas, then again, don’t know the rulz for that org (Brazilian MFC?)

I’ll draw the obvious comparison. He reminds me of a younger Wanderlai. A lot. The bald head could have something to do with it.

The flying stomp to Villegas gave me flashbacks.

leland…what about jorge lopez from wand’s team in vegas..not sure if he fights at mw or lightheavey but have heard good things about him. didnt see him make your list.

by fightfan531 on Jan 18, 2011 4:19 PM EST reply actions

We had a problem finding footage for Lopez. He was initially on my list at 6 or 7, but I couldn’t find any footage.

If managers want us to mention their fighters, it’s a good idea to take an HD DSLR camera or something with you to events and capture fights. I’m not going to include a guy I can’t actually watch. Lopez is likely a top 10 guy on this list, but I couldn’t find squat for footage.
