Marcus Aurelio Injured, Out of Shine Fights - Shannon Gugerty In

Via press release today:
As anyone involved in the sport of mixed martial arts can tell you, injuries can happen at anytime. UFC/PRIDE veteran Marcus "Maximus" Aurelio is no exception to that concept. After sustaining an injury while training for this weekend’s Shine Fights Lightweight Grand Prix, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu master has been forced to vacate his spot in the tourney. Taking his place will be fellow submission specialist Shannon Gugerty.

Jason Chamber, Shine Fight COO stated, "I am sad to see Marcus pull out of the tournament and wish him a fast recovery. Stepping up to a challenge of this magnitude on 3 days notice is a very daunting task- it is a testament to what a warrior Shannon Gugerty is. We are excited to see him compete!"

Anyone want to wager on whether his ‘injury’ heals before DREAM 16?

by Steve4192 on Sep 8, 2010 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

This is so strange. Was it an excuse to take the Dream fight instead? Can he still fight in Dream? Shine, for all it’s irrelevancy, certainly makes bloggers happy with the number of stories they create.

He’s not injured.

He’s just using the injury excuse to get out of his Shine fight (smart move) and will show up at DREAM miraculously recovered.

by Steve4192 on Sep 8, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s still under “worldwide contract” to Shine though, is he not?

“I can confirm that we do have an exclusive deal with Marcus Aurelio. I want to be fair with our agreement; I want our fighters to be fair. Our agreements are exclusive, within that there is language that speaks to giving permission to fight in other organizations. So a fighter can fight somewhere else, as long as we give that approval,” Chambers told MMAWeekly.com earlier this week.

I’d guess he’s unlikely to get that approval right after pulling out of one of their cards within 3 days of a fight.

Well considering

Every fighter isn’t likely to fight this weekend, I think this is a non story.

FUN QUESTION. Who would he have higher likelihood of getting paid by, Shine or Dream?

by bigstupidsmile on Sep 8, 2010 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

Would you rather not get paid for fighting three fights in one night followed by a possible state athletic commission suspension (for fighting in an unsanctioned event) that would be recognized nationwide, or would you rather not get paid for getting the chance to fight a Top-10 LW?

by Chromium on Sep 8, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

He isnt injured

He’d just rather face Aoki. Thatd be my guess

by Discman2 on Sep 8, 2010 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

If Marcus Aurelio faked an injury to get out of this clusterfuck before his Dream fight....

then he’s pretty fucking smart and I can’t fault him for it. He was facing both the prospects of injury and suspension for fighting in a now unsanctioned event. A suspension that would have been recognized by every athletic commission in the U.S. and Canada, and one that he’d have to violate in order to fight in Dream, possibly lengthening that suspension. On top of that Shine Fights doesn’t have the best track record for prompt payment.

by Chromium on Sep 8, 2010 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

Neither does Dream though

As for violating the suspension and posiibly lengthening it, I would say doubtful at best.

The CSAC advised Antonio Silva not to fight in Japan after being suspended for 1 year for steroids and he did anyway and after his suspension was up he hasnt had problems getting fights state side.

by bigdmmafan on Sep 8, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, I’ll give you that, but Dream is still more likely to pay their fighters than Shine. Plus if he beat Aoki, he’d have the UFC calling his agent immediately. If he won the Shine tournament, the UFC would take note of it but he’d probably have to win at least one more fight after that, which would mean either he would be fighting Aoki anyway, or he’d have to wait out an injury in case that happened.

by Chromium on Sep 8, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree and Disagree

Agree on the fact that he has a lot more to gain by beating Aoki then anybody in this tournament.

Disgaree on the statement that Dream is still more likely to pay their fighters then Shine. It’s my understanding the only way Shine can even happen is if they post the bond that has the money to pay the fighters and the AC, so at that point either your money becomes guarenteed by the AC or the event doesnt happen.

With Dream it would be 1 thing if this was just Gary Goodridge bitching about his pay but when you have 1 of your champions refusing to fight for you because he hasnt got paid to me sends a bad signal that Dream is in a lot worse of a place then people think.

by bigdmmafan on Sep 8, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Shine’s fight isn’t sanctioned. There is no commission and no bond. Their last fight was canceled because they didn’t put up the bond. VA kicked them out because they didn’t put up the bond.

by Phildo on Sep 8, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

So let me get this straight. They couldnt put up the bond in VA and moved to a place where they dont have to put a bond.

Are any of these fighters actually believing they’re going to get paid?

by bigdmmafan on Sep 8, 2010 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Josh Shockley also has dropped out due to “a training injury.” So I’m guessing there is some serious concern. Assuming they are at least getting paid their hotel room and transportation costs, it’s not like some of these guys have a lot to lose now (other than their health).

by Chromium on Sep 8, 2010 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

They are fighting on an Indian reservation. There is no athletic commission or sanctioning to bother with. If the fighters don’t get paid they’d have to take it up in state court.

by Chromium on Sep 8, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I just read Phildo's comment

I guess I would take the Dream fight over Shine fights now but damn it has to suck to be a fighter and have to take fights in organizations that have a history of not paying fighters.

by bigdmmafan on Sep 8, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Isn't changing the fight from sanctioned to unsanctioned a big deal?

Shouldn’t the contract be null and void if the fight is no longer sanctioned?

Seems like a pretty big change to me.

They’re only “contracted” for that single night anyway. And yes I suppose they could try and make a legal challenge here to get out of their contract but it’s much simpler just to claim a training injury.

by Chromium on Sep 8, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I know that if I were an agent I would require that the fight be santioned…seems like common sense.

by MMA_Messiah on Sep 8, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Usually, it’s a non-issue, as sanctioning is determined by where a fight is taking place and usually a venue is the first thing secured. Not all these guys are gonna have agents that do much more than find them fights. Aurelio probably has a good agent, and maybe Fickett and Krazy Horse. The rest, I doubt it. When the fight was announced for the Patriot Center it was supposed to be a non-issue anyway. Now if these guys fight and don’t get paid, that might become a standard clause.

agreed.

How the F are these guys getting paid if this thing does even happen? From what has been said if it isn’t sanctioned there is no guarantee of payment, but contractually these guys should be guaranteed a purse, no?

by destructivist on Sep 8, 2010 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Maximus

Had no idea there was a chance of being suspended for fighting on a card that was unsanctioned. He was pretty upset about that fact being kept from him, too. Said it was unfair to the fighters and shady of the promoters to not tell them (he is right).

He also said that his lawyers looked over his contract and he can fight in DREAM if he wants no matter what Shine says.
