Quote of the Day: K.J. Noons: "Would Love to Welcome (Manny) Pacquiao to MMA"

Photo via www.mmaweekly.com

"I would love to welcome Pacquiao into MMA. It would be an ideal situation for him because I don't take guys down to the ground, and after that's all said and done in the cage, I would be willing to step inside of the ring with him too, something we all knew Randy Couture wouldn't do with James Toney.

...

"I know Floyd (Mayweather) isn't looking to do MMA, but I would still be willing to fight Mayweather and Pacquiao in a boxing match and both camps have been reached, so we will see what happens. I will put it this way, both camps have been reached and both camps were very interested."

Interesting.

And this isn’t from a UFC fighter, so there’s actually a small chance this could occur.

A paycheck. Granted, KJ Noons is not a big name, but you could imagine Strikeforce building a PPV around this.

by Emoney on Sep 8, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but could Strikeforce really afford to offer Pacquiao even a fraction of a normal payday to do it? Granted, Manny is not all about the money per se, but still I can’t imagine Strikeforce being able to pull this off when they bungle so much easy stuff (like Diaz/Miller instead of Diaz/Noons).

by BurtBacharach on Sep 8, 2010 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, he said that he was interested in trying MMA, but Arum wouldn’t let him. While Pacquaio wouldn’t make nearly as much money as he does in boxing, it could attract MMA fans to his next boxing match.

Zero chance of it happening in MMA, though. Pacquiao and Mayweather would be 20:1 favorites with everything to lose in case of an upset and nothing to gain in victory.

Pacuiao would make KJ look like a fool

and make mma look foolish at the same time. I’d only be interested if there was an mma fight first and then the boxing fight months later. That goes Pac or Mayweather.

by bucco69 on Sep 8, 2010 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

Mayweather wants to get paid. I doubt the UFC would find it worth his asking price, and I doubt Strikeforce can afford it.

by BurtBacharach on Sep 8, 2010 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I would expect that a boxing promoter would be more

interested in this type than Strikeforce/UFC. Get back at us for the Toney fiasco haha!!

Noons is out of his mind.

Not only is Noons way bigger than Manny, Pac Man would demolish him in a stand up fight.

Who knew beating Jorge Gurgel gave him license to be such a cocky loud mouth? I hope Diaz smashes him.

Noons needs to worry about Diaz.

by KGW on Sep 8, 2010 2:39 PM EDT reply actions

Nothing wrong with trying to explore other avenues of income

If he beats Diaz, he could get a little more exposure. Even if he does a 90/10 split with Manny or Floyd in a boxing match, it would be far more than Strikeforce (or even the UFC if he bolted) would pay him.

by Mint on Sep 8, 2010 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions

And a fight neither would take

Even in MMA, because in the grand scheme of combat sports, who is KJ Noons? He’s a c-list fighter in a b-list org and he’s even more of a nobody in boxing. He’s trying to pick a fight that he knows he’ll never have to back up with real action, try to get his name on some sports ticker somewhere for three seconds.

Noons could be the Strikeforce WW champ

He beat Diaz once (I know it was by cuts, but he was still winning), and could well do it again. Diaz is a top 10 fighter, so Noons would definitely not be a B-list fighter then. Heck, Noons would be a higher ranked fighter in his class than Couture is.

A guy that is built to fight at 140lb taking out a WW title holder would be very impressive.

It’s perfect timing. Noons would be by far the biggest, most decorated MMA fighter that Pacman would have a chance of beating. Noons would have trouble against several
Strikeforce LWs and WWs (and many in the UFC), but he happens to be a competitive matchup for Diaz.

I know this whole argument hinges on Noons beating Diaz, but I don’t seem has any more than a 2:1 underdog in that fight.

by Mint on Sep 8, 2010 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Beating Diaz

Isn’t going to rocket KJ Noons into money fights with the two biggest boxers in the world. It’s not going to launch him into money fights with mixed martial artists.

If someone came to Mayweather with this idea he would slap them and ask them who the hell KJ Noons is.

KJ Noons is not now, nor will he ever be fighting Pacman or Mayweather. Anyone who things there is even a remote possibility of that happening needs to get their head checked and then come back to reality where even if he beats Nick Diaz again, KJ Noons will still be a nobody.

Why on earth would Pacquiao say that he’s interested in MMA if he really isn’t? Would anyone think any less of him if he simply said “no, my passion is boxing”?

Accepting that, who would Pacquiao rather fight instead? Name someone that wouldn’t embarass him by taking him down, that is as highly ranked as Noons will be after beating Diaz, AND would bring more money.

It’s simply the best fit. All that matters is whether Pacquiao was serious or not, and he’s not the type to yank our chain. He’s a competitor that would like to at least try the form of prizefighting preferred by the next generation.

GTFO Noons

Don’t talk about what Randy would or wouldn’t do. Besides, you’re a boxer first and MMArtist second. I’m hoping Diaz is the first of an epic losing streak.

This guy’s approaching Sonnen level shit talk.

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." - Jack Burton

don't even try to compare Sonnen and KJ

Sonnen is on a whole other level than everyone else when it comes to shit talk and fight hype. KJ is looking for a payday and there are two guys that can give it to him. Manny and Floyd

by mmaaddict on Sep 8, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I like KJ but he must know Mayweather and Pacquiao are averaging 15 to 20 MILLION per fight. Who in their right minds would change jobs and take a minimum 80% pay cut?

Noons knows he’ll never fight Mayweather or Pacquiao in boxing or MMA, this is all about self-promotion and it’s working.

What is with all the Noons hate?

FFS, let the man make his living. If he earned 5% of what Manny will in his upcoming fight, it would far exceed years of continuing to fight in Strikeforce or even joining the UFC. Do you really think he cares if he loses?

He’s not talking shit about either boxer. Pointing out the obvious difference between him and Couture is not trash talking.

Even if it was an MMA fight, think about what Noons-Pacquiao paired with Overeem-Fedor would be like. A perfect card for Strikeforce to kick off its first PPV. Even if Pacquio/Arum took 30% of the PPV, it would be worth it.

im down with all that

But I think your missing the point. Nothing wrong with chasing a fight and a big payday. Its more that Noons is completely divorced from reality with these comments. I mean he might as well call out Barack Obama as well and make it a triple threat match for all the likelihood that it’ll happen.

Noons could easily leg kick Pacman to death in MMA striking, even without doing any takedowns.

To those who don't get it:

Rossen summed it up nicely 4 days ago

Put Karl James Noons in the ring with him and you’ll see a boxing match with five-ounce gloves. Better: you’ll see Noons willing to give Pacquiao a rematch under boxing rules if things don’t go Pacquiao’s way. It’s a way of salvaging egos and cashing in on a fight series instead of a single-night take; it restores some of boxing’s mojo in the face of MMA’s rising popularity; it appeals to two different sports-fan demographics; it makes Pacquiao a ton of cash without being dependent on a bratty Floyd Mayweather; and if Noons beats Nick Diaz in October, he’ll even have the stroke of being a current world champion, lending everything an air of legitimacy.

Why would Mayweather be interested? Well, other than Mayweather, who’s left for him to fight? He doesn’t even have to train for this if it’s a boxing match.

Well, it’s obviously never going to happen, but I fail to see why anyone would fault Noons for wanting it to. He’s just throwing it out there.. why not? Nothing wrong with that. If nothing else, at least he got some free press coverage out of it.
