I’m thinking they don´t want to risk him losing just in case Sonnen gets the belt.

Well, he has to fight someone, and I honestly just can’t see how Grove could defeat him.

True, but I see this fight going the same way that the Kendall Grove vs Ricardo Almeida fight went, or how Demian Maia vs Mario Miranda went. I can see Maia getting the takedowns and working top control for three rounds. I don’t think that Grove is going to get submitted, nor can I see Grove finishing Maia in any way.

Demian by whatever choke he feels Kendall deserves.

More optimistic prediction, only because it would be hilarious to see happen to Grove: Demian by heel hook.

Maia’s take downs are straight garbage (STILL don’t know how he did that to Chael) and Grove is a big boy. I see a stylistic issue, even with all dem long limbs to grab at.

Demian has become one of my favorites lately but I just don’t see him threatening Silva. He played scared but maybe Chael has taught everyone a lesson. We’ll see.

Or he destroys Chael if he can beat Silva.

by Rufford on Sep 8, 2010 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Demian is another one of those guys too smart for MMA.

He overthinks sometimes, but sets it aside and just does work in the ring (octagon). I think his fights with Marquardt and Anderson were both times he let his brain take too much control. You’ll notice when he stopped giving a fuck and stopped trying to out-think him, he started landing serious punches.

There’s a balance between mental and physical in MMA, and if you don’t get it right given your opponent, things don’t go your way. Normally he has a close enough balance to make shit happen and win. I think with new perspective on how to fight Anderson, it looks much different in a rematch.

He'll be the first to admit he done fucked up in that fight.

In my honest opinion, Demian can win any fight at middleweight or welterweight on a given day. Any. The Nate fight happened to not be the right time for him, and I don’t know if Wand Fight Team was the right place for him to be at the time. He’s since moved on amicably and his only loss since is to the pound for pound king of the sport. Your assertion that Kendall should win is… not well thought out. I just don’t see what Grove does significantly better than anybody Demian has beat aside from be really fucking tall.

Watch Grove’s fight against Ricardo Almeida. Grove got taken down a lot by Almeida, and Grove doesn’t have that good of takedown defense. I can see Maia being able to get the takedown on Grove especially if Almeida was able to.

by chrisbboy82 on Sep 8, 2010 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

This is such shit. “Especially if Almeida was able to.”

Do people seriously forget that Almeida takes almost everyone down at will?

I think Maia has good takedowns. But shitting on Almeida to illustrate a point about someone else’s takedown defense is so dumb.

Clinch and Twist

His take down game is all about the clinch and using little finesse arm drags and trips. It’s looked pretty damn effective against everybody except for Anderson. Grove is a long boy but not a super strong boy so I don’t see him throwing around Maia who as looked a little beefier of late.

I see Grove’s best chance as ending it with a knee but that might play into what Maia wants. It’s also worth noting that Grove nearly ripped Almeida’s arm off but I don’t think that having a good/underrated guard is enough against a ground God.

At least Demian Maia’s going to win two in a row. I mean say what you will about Maia’s takedowns but grove couldn’t stop Ricardo Almeida’s to save his life. So whatever, Maia gets the fight to the ground, Grove tries to make it respectable and either ends up in 18 different submissions and survives until the bell or taps.

The UFC just straight hates Kendall Grove. I’m pretty sure they just like watching him lose at this point.

by destructivist on Sep 8, 2010 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Given anything can happen but...

I really think Damian Taps him out in a gogo Grove is overrated IMHO. He can’t even cone up with an original touchdown dance he’s gotta steal it from Bighead. I don’t think groves stand up is so dominant compared to Maia that he can control it easily there and prevent a take down. He’s not gonna b as effective with his kicks cause unlike the stand up Maia holds a ginormous advantage on the ground. So grove doesn’t wanna go there in the slightest the advantage is so huge. And that will effect his stand up even though it is better but like I said it’s not as much as it is on the groundcabd it will be significantly hampered because he wants nothing to do with the ground. Groves only hope is his reach working those keg kicks from the outside it opens him up for a take down but if he doesn’t do or die the first round and he works it the first 1-1/2 2 rounds then after Maia is significantly worn and battered go in for the other wise Maia wins by gogo 99/100 times. I don’t think grove wins Maia takes this easily

Maia should obviously win; he’s the more highly ranked fighter, far superior with submissions, and his throws aren’t half bad. Grove, though, can punch and is 6’6’’. If he doesn’t fight like he’s terrified of the clinch, he could KO Maia in 30 seconds. Ultimately it comes down to how Grove approaches the bout. Its all mental, because with the kind of physical gifts he has and the kind of target in front of him (Maia is immobile, holds his hands like a newb, might not be able to outbox Royce Gracie). Maia, meanwhile, will pull guard immediately should he get his hands on Grove and probably work for something from the bottom. Again, not really the best spot.

If Maia is going to get a long buildup of mediocre fighters before he reemerges as a title threat, this is a tough one to beat.
