You gotta be kidding me with the easy thing

Vera has the better technical striking, he’ll for sure have the edge in the wrestling department, plus I’m pretty sure he has the reach advantage. I see Vera outpointing Silva from a distance for all three rounds.

Josh Barnett is a thrice proven juicer with a pro wrestling mindset and a personality that would lead you to believe he's never had a romantic encounter that didn’t start with "you gotta pay me upfront."

Very true but in my opinion it’s a must win for Vera ? He needs a Victory much more then Thiago does and I really don’t see him getting it hear ?

I know we keep hearing the rumor the only reason they have held onto Vera this long is for a future philippines show. But I have been hearing that same thing now for over 2+ years and still I don’t see any UFC show planned for downtown Manila anytime soon. I just can’t see the UFC paying Vera to keep going down the same career path that he has been going down for the last few years. Lossing agasint top to mid level competition and when he does get a W its only buy fighting a lower level outclassed opponent at 205 and still Brandon fights a safe tentative fight which turns out to be one bore fest decision win.

Doing enuff just to win agasint lower level competition at 205 is not something Zuffa likes paying out $80,000 to $100,000 a fight for over long periods of time. I would not be one bit surprised at all if he gets a green slip with his check if he drops this fight ?

by Shocbomb on Sep 8, 2010 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

I think youre being a touch hard on Brandon here

Vera:
-once crushed Frank Mir
-Gave Randy Couture the fight of his life and arguably beat him
-can beat any mid level fighter at LHW and HW on any given night

Am I saying he’s top 5? No, but he’s an elite level fighter nonetheless and he’s earned his place in the UFC imo.

Though I agree he will be cut if he drops this one (and I bet Scott Coker is right there to pick him up for a Hendo or Mousasi fight).

His striking is tighter, his wrestling is steady. Thiago has a good chance that his aggression will overwhelm Vera, but I just feel like Vera might be able to keep him off guard.

Thiago gets hit a lot, but usually has the power to compensate for it.

Upon multiple viewings, I scored it FUCK THIS FIGHT!

It’s very similar to my scorecard for Cantwell vs. Stann III. Pardon me for seeing two guys locked in a cage and expecting something resembling a fight to break out. If it were ultimate hugging championship or ultimate circling championship then yeah, Couture and Stann won the match in those respective promotions. But neither of them deserved a win and both should have gotten warnings/yellow card equivalents for doing everything they could to prevent a fight.

and if anything, he outthinks himself. He has all the technical ability and athleticism necessary. Taking some time off and reassessing how he fights will change everything. I don’t think we’ll see the “old” Brandon Vera or the so called “tentative” Brandon Vera. We’re going to see somebody who knows how to take their amazing skillset and make shit happen.

Just an odd saying, I guess. The problem I see is how “smart” isn’t necessarily the right word, overplanning and over-thinking doesn’t really imply “smart,” but I do see what you mean.

or rather, the worst part about it, is that it can and will probably easily become one of those waaaaaaaaaaaaay overused and cliched phrases.

They are all exceptionally smart, well spoken, intelligent people. That’s the common denominator I see. They are all a bit too “normal” to get locked in a cage and fight until another man is rendered incapable of continuing. Seriously, meet any of those guys outside of a fight and you wouldn’t believe what their career is.

Round 1: Couture got rocked early, but the judges thought he “won the round” with the only thing he did was fail to takedown Vera, and get one takedown that lasted for around 5 seconds.

Vera clearly won round 2. Giving it to couture would be just plain stupid(er?).

Round 3: Vera hurts randy and gets a takedown and FULLMOUNT….yet they still give it to Randy… If constantly failing on takedown attempts and getting one takedown (where you do nothing for 5 seconds) is enough to win the 1st round, why does a takedown + fullmount mean nothing?

It was incompetent judging, and everyone would be up in arms if Captain America was on the other side of the decision. Sure, Vera could’ve done more to finish the fight on the second, sure, he could’ve improved a lot of the stuff he did on that fight. Sure you can call him out for lacking that “killer instinct”, but he still won that bout…

I really like this fight. However, if Vera loses, he may get and probably will get cut from the UFC. Thiago Silva has shown that he will go for the kill, whereas Vera has been cautious and seems to have lost that killer instinct. On technical standup, Vera should win this, but Thiago really puts the pressure on his opponents.

Great fight. I hope Thiago will be fully recovered and bring his aggressiveness, while Vera might be slightly better technically I feel the killer instinct of Silva could be the deciding factor. I hope so, anyway.

I’ve got Vera here. This fights gonna look a lot more like Kampmann/Thiago than T.Silva/Jardine.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

I don’t know why everyone is counting out Vera here, is it cuz he lost to Couture? Both fighters are strikers and Vera has the much much longer reach.

It will be intersting to see how Thiago responds coming off his pretty serious injury. Vera has to be in desperation mode for this. If he gets blown out, his walking papers will probably come with it, but I think he will get one last chance if he wins or at least puts on a good show.

Got to go with Vera. Unless he gets overwhelmed, he should easily outstrike Silva. Personally, I hope that Vera elbows and knees the shit out of Thiago, I can’t stand his thug shtick.

I am not impressed by thiago silva. He has lost to all his top competition he has faced including rashad evans who beat the shit out of him and then when he had him hurt taunted him till he got his witts back and took him down….again. Vera has a wrestling base and nasty muy thai. Def. not impressed by the jones fight but hey Jones is gonna run through everyone. Vera did more damage in the Couture fight he just got controlled against the cage. If Vera controls the range and unleashes his kicks he will take this one. If it becomes a brawl Thiago will take it.
