Forrest Griffin Willing, but Hardly Eager, to Face Jon Jones in the UFC
From the MMA Hour:
Last month a rumor circulated that Griffin would face rising contender Jon Jones. Griffin said he was never offered Jones and he's only been in contact with the promotion during an early point of his physical rehab.
"UFC gave me a call a while back and I was training with eight pounds and the [thought of] taking a fight when I'm not really training MMA at all was terrifying," he said. "But now that I'm training I'll have somewhere to fit those nerves."
Always the company man, Griffin said he wouldn't volunteer to fight Jones, but "if it happens, I guess it happens." It wouldn't be the brightest idea, though, Griffin pointed out.
"That's a great fight to take a year layoff with injury fighting a guy coming off like a hot three-fight win streak," Griffin remarked sarcastically.
Griffin also told Helwani that he'd like to return to action in 2010.

I hope they have Jones fight someone who is not Forrest Griffin.
Thiago Silva maybe?

I too keep coming back to Thiago as having the best (well, worst for him) combination of ranking, name, skillset and lack of a protector (at the UFC level) for Jones next.
Truthfully it would be a perfect step up for Jones, although a bad career move for Thiago…

Thiago is safe I think
It seems he did the UFC a solid by not pulling out of the Evans fight so i would hope he wouldnt be cut for potential back to back losses to the likes of Rashad and Bones

I hope they give Jones someone who isn't coming off a loss.

Well, wouldn’t that be the idea? Give Jones the biggest win of his career over a name guy with a solid highlight reel? It’s not like Thiago is challenging for a belt soon. Plus if Thiago does beat him then that opens up a lot of possibilities as well
I like it.

I dunno about handily.
Bader has good takedown defense and is just as quick and athletic as Jones. Reach and size would be a factor, but I could easily see this going to a decision.
I’m a Jones fan, but I think there are still some question marks for Jones that would be tested by a younger fighter similar to his game.
Bader fits that mold.

anyone
with good stand up (technique + power) should give Jones fits. Bader has the power, but not sure about the technique just yet.
With that being said, i’d personally like to see Jones fight Rampage. I think Page would KHTFO, highlight real style
That might help in a K-1 fight
No amount of stand-up is going to save any current top LHWs from Jones taking them down. Much like no amount of stand-up would save any striker from GSP.
I would SO love to see Rampage – Jones, but unless Rampage really pisses Dana off, and Dana wants to punish him, it will never happen.

Yep
Jones is to smart to let Bader have a chance.
He tripped Maty and crucified him like it was a practice drill, then proceeded to throw 7 solid unanswered elbows to the head.
The improvement he showed from the Hamill fight to the Matyushenko fight is remarkable, it shows just how technical and methodical Jones is becoming. In another 6 or 8 months he’ll be more polished and even more confident.

But, is Maty better than Bader?
I don’t think so. That’s a rough comparison.
I would like to think that Bader’s Division I NCAA wrestling acumen is better and more savvy then Jones’s well-coached JUCO wrestling background. Even the camps that they come out of would make them at the very least equal.
I think where the advantage turns towards Jones is in his length and athleticism. I think he has an advantage there over Bader. bader is explosive, but not “Jones-explosive”.
I still think that Bader-Jones is not as clear cut as you would suggest. There are a lot of unknowns about Jones conditioning and technique versus another wrestler with similar pedigree.

I’m just talking about the methodical way he took him out and the poise he showed while doing it. For a kid his age, he looked way too comfortable and confident in the cage.
I think Matyushenko has about the same pedigree as Bader maybe a little better. He’s wrestled internationally and collegiality here in the states. I’m not saying Vlad better, just that he is a high level wrestler as well.
I don’t think it will be a blowout, but I do think Jones will take down him and try to keep him there.

… Page might be out of his element in that fight. He doesn’t have the takedown defense to defend against a long and athletic Jones who is really good at getting his opponents to the mat.

Finding Jones a fight at 205
Is going to be tough right now. All the logical choices are either out injured, coming back off injuries/losses or tied up with other fights. I suspect Griffin will ultimately be the next fight for Jones.

How about Couture? Coming off multiple wins, top 10 in the division, winner would be ready for a title shot, could headline a card. If Couture can’t stop Jones wrestling then no one at 205 can.

I can see that, but I don’t see how they could deny Jones a title shot in lieu of Couture at this point. I think if Couture gets a title shot it will be after Jones does, which means he will probably be fighting Jones either way.
In reality Couture will probably sit out until Franklin or Forrest come back from injury and take on one of those 2, while Bones waits around for the winner of Machida v Rampage or Bader v Nogueira.
by IWillPartyHard on Sep 7, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Jones/Forrest
Book it. I’m telling you that’s going to be the fight. Then they’ll put the winner of that up against the winner of Nog/Bader in a number 1 contender match on the same card as Shogun/Rashad.
The only thing that changes that is if Rampage miraculously beats Machida.
As for Couture, they’ll put him together with Franklin, the winner will get fast tracked and may well usurp the Jones/Bader side of the bracket for a title shot. Reason being? Randy Couture is 47 years old, the door is rapidly closing, where as Jones is 23, Bader 27, both have time on their side.
Ideally they get a Couture vs. Jones/Bader title match, and if either of those guys were to beat Couture in that situation it would make them instant superstars.

Even my wife LOL'ed
If all MMA fighters were this candid in interviews the sport would be much more entertaining.
Interviews like that are why MMA fighters are the most entertaining athletes in the world
On one hand you have Lebron making a reveal that the media had been pumping up for like 3 years and turning it into Slow boring voice“i’m taking my talents to south beach” Then you have Forrest Griffin giving an interview as straight and real as this. I mean the guy talks like a fan. Doesn’t let the fame get to him at all and he just tells it straight, plus he’s hilarious while doing it. By the 2rd time he said stupid I could barely see my computer screen because I was laughing so much.
Jon Jones quote from Inside MMA on August 27th
“Right now I’m waiting for Ryan Bader and Lil’ Nog to fight each other and I’ll fight the winner of that, and I’m predicting that I’m about two fights away from a title shot. I had a meeting with Dana and Lorenzo and that’s kind of where were going with it. They didn’t really say two fights. They said you know, you beat the winner of Bader/Lil’ Nog, we’ll give you one more fight. We’ll see you know how you win the fights, depending on the fashion of the finish, then you know, we’ll give you a title shot.”
As transcribed by MMAMania, and others. According to Jones this is how it’s going down, so there’s really not much need to speculate on other opponents right now IMO.
Good, I think that makes the most sense. I’d think he’d get a title shot if he beat the winner of that fight, but with the title on hold for so long he may need a 2nd fight just to stay busy.

Yeah, agreed. Then there’s the possible clusterfuck if Rashad wins the title from Shogun before that though.. as Jones and Rashad are on record saying they won’t fight eachother. I’m hoping Rashad doesn’t get it though, can’t stand him.. if he does, I would love for Jones to go rogue and go after Rashad anyway and beat him. That would be totally tits!
by Horselover Fat on Sep 7, 2010 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I just don't see them putting JJ
against Bader, should he win. If Bader beats Lil’ Nog, both he and JJ would be on a direct course to fight for #1 contender status and/or the championship. You can’t derail one in the favor of the other. I could see JJ fighting Lil Nog if he wins, but not Bader. If Bader wins, ya gotta throw Bones up against Forrest or Silva….it just makes the most sense
Well I don’t think there’s that shortage of contenders at LHW, that they have to protect every guy possible. I think this possible Bader / Jones fight would make the most sense, if anything. Besides, they’re both young and could work themselves to the title shot in a few fights again, I don’t see it as some goal in itself that they must get to it now, only if they can prove they deserve it (if that means fighting eachother, that’s fine).
I don’t agree with Silva fight, he’s coming off a loss and a lay-off from injury.. Forrest is also coming off injury, and split-decision win over Tito (before that two losses).
Again, if we’re going to take Jones word for it, this is what he said very recently, and personally I think it’s great if this is indeed what’s planned. I think it’s the most logical solution if you stop thinking about how UFC should protect and guide their upcoming contenders in the best way possible (which I’m not a huge fan of in general).
by Horselover Fat on Sep 7, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions
This ^. LHW doesn’t need to be coddled like HW. There are tons of potential title contenders (Rampage, Machida, Lil Nog, Bader, Jon Jones, Couture, Franklin, Bader, as well as guys who could be close soon like Brilz or Thiago Silva). If Bader lost to Jon Jones he would probably only need 2 fights to get right back where he was. Also, I think Bader is going to lose to Lil Nog anyways, so you won’t have to worry about Jones handing him his first loss. Bader struggled with Jardine and Lil Nog is on a whole other level. I don’t see Bader being able to put Lil Nog in a tight guillotine for the majority of a round the way Brilz did. I see him getting outworked, gassing, and getting subbed in the 3rd round.
by IWillPartyHard on Sep 7, 2010 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Seriously.
Even guys a little ways down the field like Franklin and Thiago could easily come up with a string of surprise wins and challenge for the title.
Shogun is one of my favourite fighters and he is incredible when fighting healthy but even he can’t dominate the title in a division this stacked full of talented and proven fighters.
Thank you Dana and Lorenzo!
Not just for Jones getting the winner of Bader-Lil Nog, but for:
“We’ll see you know how you win the fights, depending on the fashion of the finish, then you know, we’ll give you a title shot."
THAT is how #1 contender fights can be made more fan-friendly in the wake of Rashad-Rampage and, to a lesser degree, Florian-Maynard.
- fights should be contingent on a finish, and if its a decision, Dana & co will determine if its title shot worthy or not.
We need look no farther than Fitch to see this isn’t done purely on a basis of wins and ranking.

You know what’s my favorite thing about Forrest?, the fact that no matter how much bullshit is said about him he’ll always be known as the guy who chocked out Shogun and literally kicked the crap out of Rampage.
That’s why I continually find it incredible to see how lightly people take him and want to come up with all sorts of bullshit to make him look bad. I’m pretty confident about Forrest and Jones facing off sometime next year and when they do don’t be surprised to see Forrest pull out another one over a guy that was supposed to destroy him.

I predict Jones does not get a 205 title shot, ever
At the pace they’re bringing him along, he’s going to grow right out of that weight class before he gets a shot. They’re talking about 2 more fights and then possibly a title shot. He might get one more fight this year, then one fight around May or so next year… by the time the title shot rolls around, the cut is too substantial and he’ll be a true heavyweight — he’s already walking around in the 230s, right? So he’s already cutting 25 pounds. No way he’s a 205 next year this time. No way.
"You stick a microphone in a guy's face and he calls out anybody but the champion, and Joe Silva should fax him a pink slip right then." -- Chael Sonnen.
Your truly underestimating Forrest Griffin
If not for the fact that he was coming off a rather substantial injury layoff I would give Forrest Griffin the advantage over either Lil Nog and Bader. Even after a year off I’m still more than willing to give him plenty of chance.
Hell just look at his record. He’s won 3 of his last 5 against Tito, Rampage, and Shogun. His losses came from the P4P King who’s undefeated in this promotion and the next title contender.
