Man, you know a good way to find out facts?

A trial. It’s too bad there wasn’t some kind of trial where they settled the facts of Shane’s steroid purchases…

"I wanna wait for Kos-GSP to find out who gets the next shot"

Meh. I kinda like the fact that you know that “these guys are fighting for a title shot”. Adds some excitement.

On the other hand, it seems Maynard-Florian and Fitch-Alves sucked.
Evans-Rampage was decent and JDS-Nelson was good though.

by Magaca on Sep 7, 2010 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

Well, Maynard and Fitch fights can’t really be blamed on the fact they were for a title shot. Although I do believe that there is a growing mentality among fighters of waaaayyyy to much risk aversion, especially the more there is on the line, so I’d just as soon never announce a #1 contender fight as such

Unsure how I feel about Rashad Evans waiting a year for Shogun Rua.

by Nick Thomas on Sep 7, 2010 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

I wouldn’t want to fight Machida again if I were Evans and already had a title shot in hand.

by menckenstein on Sep 7, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think the UFC wants it either

Because it would likely set up yet another Shogun-Machida match. Shogun should not have to fight the same guy three times in a row.

Other than the delay for Shogun’s recovery, I like everything the way it is.

by Mint on Sep 7, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

He shouldn't have to fight the same guy 3 times in a row?

Well if that same guy is beating everyone else then what do you expect? I’m still shocked Rampage took the fight, I thought for sure he’d pick a fight he surely knew he could win.

I wish Randy would mount me too...

by HitokiriX on Sep 7, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

He picked it to make his name relavent again.

Ask yourself, do you think Rampage should be in championship talks? If so, before who?

Rampage was going into “gatekeeper” status and he needed a fight that could potentially vault him back into championship contention.

Personally I'd guess

He got offered his choice of Machida or Jones, but that is pure speculation.

He is continuing his slide I’ve been predicting since before he fought Rashad into glorified gatekeeper status by mid-2011.

There are still entertaining and profitable fights to be had featuring him against other “name” fighters, all of whom have no realistic hopes of a title shot unless they are carefully scheduled around the more dangerous guys.

Along with Rampage, I would include Griffin, Couture, Franklin and Chuck. Still some great fights to be had amongst themselves, but none of them have anything for Shogun, Anderson, Machida or Jones. Rashad is kind of between the 2 groups IMO, although he could likely give Rua and Anderson troubles with his wrestling.

Fair enough

… But, look at the two fights you suggest.

If he fights an up & comer like Jones, he is nothing more than taking a fight against a guy who is looking to get a big name on his resume. If he fights against Machida, he is fighting a guy who is still in title contention and would be seen as a building block to a title shot; not a fight that propels another fighter.

If Machida wins, he’s no closer to a title fight than he was BEFORE the Jackson fight. If Jones wins, he’s vaulted further up the ranks.

I think Jackson looked at this as a lose-lose situation. He wouldn’t be favored against either, but not losing to a member of Rashad’s camp probably is somewhat comforting.

Besides, the jury is still out about Machida to some. His victories, although impressive, are not as thorough as some of the other championship holders or contenders.

Maybe ’Page sees it as someone he could possibly upset?

I agree

If I were in Rampage’s shoes I would chose machida, if given the choice.

Machida is a “name” of sorts, and a former champion, whereas Jones, well known as he is to all of us, doesn’t have a big name yet. Much better risk/reward for fighting Machida.

I only see Rampage fighting Jones if Rampage pisses Dana off again…

I expect what every promotion in every sport does. Change the opponent and let the rematch happen when it’s appropriate.

by Mint on Sep 7, 2010 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m okay with it simply because the only thing to do is have him fight Machida instead of Rampage, and we’ve seen Machida-Rashad and know how that ends, and then you get a rubber match that I’m okay with but everyone else would despise.

Also, i feel bad for Fitch. Boring or not, this guy has deserved another title shot by beating so many contenders in that division.

by Magaca on Sep 7, 2010 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

Straightforward reasoning behind it though

Fitch was roasted and toasted by GSP the first time around.
He hasn’t shown much change in his style since that fight.
He’s not exciting even when he loses.

Bottom line: Why would Dana & Silva want to give him another rematch?

by Pyrgz Krum on Sep 7, 2010 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

He’s not exciting even when he loses?

Are you kidding me? GSP-Fitch was one of the most exciting WW fights we’ve seen in years. It got FOTN. I’m glad GSP didn’t finish in the first.

Jon Fitch deserves a title shot because Dana White said the winner between Fitch and Thiago Alves would receive one.

Yeah, that too of course.

by Magaca on Sep 7, 2010 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m glad he isn’t automatically putting the winner of Shields-Kampmann ahead of Fitch and at least considering both.

Of course, Shields is pretty deserving also. A huge win streak and a big win over Hendo is impressive.

When asked about Jones next opponent, he said that it was tough to match him up with a highly ranked guy currently as Shogun is out, Rashad is waiting, Machida-Rampage are fighting, Forrest is out and Nog-Bader are fighting.

by Magaca on Sep 7, 2010 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Rich and Thiago Silva are out as well i believe.

by Magaca on Sep 7, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you sir

I still suspect Thiago Silva as the next opponent, unless the rumor of the winner of Bader-Nog is true. Silva has the wrong combination of ranking and name (without a “protector” to keep him out of the fight). Then again, with his injury history…

No problem

I would love to see Silva-Jones!

by Magaca on Sep 7, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually think

That is the best possible fight for jones right now. Its a definite step up, and a different type of fighter than he has faced.

The winner of that could easily be in a #1 contender fight next.

Dana can still suspend Carwin. You don’t need a conviction to suspend someone. The UFC needs a personal conduct policy. People like Pac-Man and Big Ben are a good reason for it.

by DayGeaux on Sep 7, 2010 11:30 AM EDT reply actions

But they don't have a personal conduct policy

Suspensions in MMA don’t work all that well, because Shane only fights once every 4-6 months as it is.

If you suspend him for 6 months then he has one less paycheck that year, no sponsorship money, and you may still have to pay for training. I know what you mean, but even a 6 month suspension could hit your wallet.

by DayGeaux on Sep 7, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

what kind of conduct policy would allow for him to be suspended for something he did 2 years before he joined the ufc?

by Phildo on Sep 7, 2010 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

That is true. I guess that wouldn’t work in this instance.

by DayGeaux on Sep 7, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the backlash Carwin gets from the public and the damage done to his nice-guy image is punishment enough.

by Mint on Sep 7, 2010 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Including us 4, theres about 12 other people that know about it. Joe Fan doesn’t have any idea about Shane Carwin. They didn’t know anything about him until he fought Mir and Lesnar and certainly haven’t been following Shane Carwin news thereafter.

by Heenan on Sep 7, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Its on ESPN (via Sherdog)

If you went to their MMA page at the time, it was right there. If you google Carwin and go to news, it’s the number one or two item. Almost every article that mentions him talks about it. It’s on his wikipedia page.

Anyone who wants to know about Carwin and the people that already do (the target audience of his endorsements and the reason he gets paid by sponsors) know about this.

It didn’t destroy Nate Marquardt’s, Royce Gracie, or Tim Sylvia’s (Tim destroyed his on his own). Carwin news from 4 years ago is like finding out Louie Oosthouizen had an affair last year. Carwin’s off the map until he gets back in line for the strap.

by Heenan on Sep 7, 2010 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Dana's stand on the Carwin situation

Sure, we all know it happened, but we don’t really know 100% as if we saw him inject the stuff with our own eyes. Plus, you gotta think, the HW division is more stacked than its ever been in the UFC, but after the top five or so guys its still pretty stagnant relatively. The UFC needs all the HW stars it can get, and with Carwin’s age they can’t really afford to make a stink about it. Plus, as others have mentioned, this was all before his UFC career. I know its aggravating after all of his white knight antics, but lets try to cut the guy a little slack. Maybe this will make him tone down the whole good guy persona he’s been forcefeeding us. I know Mike Fagan and Black Lesnar should like that.

I'm the best ever. You're the most average in a minute.

Jon Jones should fight a heavyweight while he waits

Take a fight with a lighter heavyweight:

Couture
Kongo
Barry
Beltran
Schaub
Cro Cop
or even Dos Santos.

I’d be down fo JDS or Kongo

If you want to hear my opinion on Les Miles go to BJPenn.com.

by DayGeaux on Sep 7, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

There is absolutely no way Jones vs JDS happens

JDS is next in line for HW title after Cain. If Jones is even offered/takes a HW fight, it’ll be with a gatekeeper.

by Cocytus on Sep 7, 2010 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think the UFC would do that to Randy

If so, they could fight at LHW. Kongo, Barry or Dos Santos would be awesome though…
