nice

Hippie festivals are good times, allows me to be a part-time hippie and just enjoy the vibes for a few days. If you havent been to Bonnaroo, I highly advise it. Even though its in Tennessee, its a 3 night/4 day awesomefest. Its gotten a little more commercialized through the years, but its still the best time ive ever had, except for woodstock ’99. Gathering of the Vibes is always a winner as well.

A couple years ago, I wouldn’t have thought he’d let Toney-Couture happen, either.

no way

If that’s not at about 220 pounds James can’t make the cut

Uch… why can’t Toney just go away. Vitor — leave him alone and pay attention to your upcoming fight.

Won't happen

To be honest though, I would not give Vitor much of a chance against him in a boxing match. Pointless to speculate though.

MMA folks have to adopt the “get rid of the child” approach and just not say anything or do anything to provoke Toney to want to involve himself in MMA anymore.

Toney is the most boring heel to ever grace sports.

by DirtyML on Sep 6, 2010 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

am i the only one

who would like to see this happen????

i honestly feel like it’s only fair.
james phony stepped out of his comfort zone to fight a legend under mma rules.
in my opinion it’d only be fair for a mixed martial artist to show the same testicular fortitude and step out of his comfort zone to fight toney.

until it happens the mma vs boxin debate isn’t settled completely imo

I’d definitely watch it.

James would make Vitor look foolish.

by Steve4192 on Sep 6, 2010 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

That's exactly what I was thinking

Vitor’s got some nice hands, but he ain’t no 15 time boxing champ.

"The path to enlightenment is through suffering"

by RearNakedChoker on Sep 6, 2010 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it still would be fun to watch

If Vitor gets tooled, it would be nice to see the big gulf in striking we keep hearing about.

If not, I’d like to see just how far the adage “speed kills” can go. Huge speed advantage vs. huge “sweet science” advantage.

It would also be a good holdover fight if Vitor beats Okami, because Silva won’t be free until spring or summer. Whether he wins or loses against Toney, he’d still be deserving of a title shot.

by Mint on Sep 7, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I would truly

like to see this happen as well. I’d also say this is a circus fight so it should be open weight, fuck it. As pathetic as Toney looked against that single leg heel baby crawl takedown Couture got him in, James could literally tell Vitor what he was going to do to him. Then do it.

Don't gain the world and lose your soul, wisdom is better than silver or gold.

by nicey on Sep 6, 2010 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not so sure about that.

I think James could make Vitor look foolish defensively and with counters, but he doesn’t do much in the way of initiating offense. Vitor’s best chance would be to fight a boring fight and make James come to him. Even then, his odds would still be very slim.

by Steve4192 on Sep 6, 2010 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Make it an MMA fight

With a gentlemen’s agreement of no takedowns, no submissions, maybe no clinch even.

Or straight kick boxing, maybe without kicks below the waist.

Just to kind of even things out a bit.

by BigDNotDallas on Sep 7, 2010 1:01 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

How does that even things out?

Toney did full-on MMA… why can’t full-on boxing take place?

by Jay Smith on Sep 7, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Now all James has to do is lose 50 pounds.

by DirtyML on Sep 7, 2010 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

What about

Lil Nog? He has some of the better boxing in MMA and he won gold at the South American Games games in 2006 and bronze in the Pan-Am Games in 2007. I know that is nothing to what Toney has accomplished but if you really want to put someone in there that isn’t going wing punches and has experience in it. I’m grasping for logic concerning a non logical individual.

by mmaaddict on Sep 7, 2010 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Nog is just so damn slow. Great technique, but he moves about as fast as continental drift. There isn’t an ounce of fast twitch muscle fiber in either Nog.

by Steve4192 on Sep 7, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that totally loses all intrigue for me. I’d rather see fast and inexperienced take on Toney rather than slow and semi-accomplished.

by Mint on Sep 7, 2010 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d actually like to see it but it being fair? I don’t think that’s true. Toney talked trash about MMA and followed Dan. I could be wrong but I don’t see a lot of MMA guys going and running their mouths about how they could beat PBF or Pacman in a boxing match.

by seanerk88 on Sep 7, 2010 12:14 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

vitor is talkin shit about how he could beat toney in a boxin match

which is exactly what toney did about mma fighters

i don’t know who dan is or why toney followed him though

“Dana, let me fight James Toney on a 6 round boxing match. I think I can catch him with my speed.”

Yup, that’s some serious shit talking there. Puts to shame all the crap from Toney’s mouth.

Fortitude?

There IS a line between bravery and complete stupidity, and you’re basically saying that because James crossed it, we should too?

by Shaun32887 on Sep 7, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

There's only one thing sacred to Dana right now

And that’s the continued, controlled growth of his very polished product. MMA fighting in the octagon. Thats the name of the game. There is no way he or the people he works with take the risk of changing that product in a significant way by adding a legit boxing match into the system. It will introduce too much difference, unfocus the presentation, possibly confuse a large part of the casual audience, and sully the last 8 years of work ZUFFA has put into making the UFC the premier MMA org in the world.

If this actually happens, I’ll eat my keyboard. But I get to use Cholula.

by Cocytus on Sep 7, 2010 12:31 AM EDT reply actions

I think Toney-Couture was a risk to his brand image

It looks smart in hindsight, but what if Toney learned an iota of takedown defense and forced Couture to shoot in a way that left him exposed?

It just might happen.

by Mint on Sep 7, 2010 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

It was a risk, but one more calculated towards being beneficial.

In the end, it was still an MMA bout, with MMA rules, and without any of the stifling baggage of the boxing world. It may have been one of the most extremely lopsided bouts in recent UC history, but it was still dressed up and presented like every other fight.

To go and do a true boxing match, for me, thats something else entirely.

by Cocytus on Sep 7, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that’s a good point, but I’m thinking that it could even be promoted without the UFC banner but still under Zuffa.

The alternative, as mentioned above, is simply a gentlemen’s agreement to keep it standing, refrain from hitting when breaking out of the clinch, and not use kicks. The gloves will make a huge difference to both defense and offense, but otherwise it should be good enough for Toney.

by Mint on Sep 8, 2010 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Grrrrrrrr....

please put Toney back in thee octogon and put his lights out.

by ThaBEAST on Sep 7, 2010 8:37 AM EDT reply actions

Isn’t Toney a bit too heavy for a fight with Belfort? And will the UFC even allow this?

I'm a lover not a fighter

by spectaa on Sep 7, 2010 8:56 AM EDT reply actions

Waaaay too heavy and no way in hell.

by DayGeaux on Sep 7, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Belfort was willing to fight Fedor

He was planning on getting up to 215 on a week or two notice, and fought HW before. He’s a big MW, that’s for sure.

by Mint on Sep 7, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

As long as Belfort can fight at heavyweight

It doesn’t matter that Toney weighs 30 or 40 pounds more. The Klitschkos often weigh 40 or 50 pounds more than their challengers. Clearly Toney wouldn’t be able to get below heavyweight, so that would be the only realistic option. Even fat and out of shape, Toney would tear Belfort apart in a boxing match. Belfort’s not a boxer; Toney’s not an MMA fighter. That’s why the debate is stupid: neither style will ever prevail on the other style’s home turf.
