Nate Diaz Wants Top-Three Opponent at Lightweight or Welterweight

"Whatever (the UFC) want(s) to do with me, I’m fine."

"I’d like to get someone in the top three contenders at either lightweight or welterweight rather than against some tough guy that’s not as popular or not as high in the rankings."

"I want to try and get a belt here sometime."

-- Nate Diaz says he wants a top contender during the UFC 118 post-fight press conference.

too much too soon

guys like Pierce, Ellenberger, Story and Hendricks could conceivably give Nate problems at WW. He needs to win a couple more before fighting Fitch, Alves, Kos, etc. I have no interest in seeing him drop back down to LW because I think he is a better fighter at 170. WW is a stacked division and no one is getting a quick ride to the top.

I actually think Diaz vs Alves is a pretty intriguing matchup. Maybe not the best matchup in terms of the career development of these two respective fighters, but a fun fight to watch

Well he ain’t gonna fight shields so that’s out of the question…how bout kampman, wouldn’t be a good idea to fight any wrestlers

by Slic Ric on Sep 6, 2010 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

Depends on whether they want to build Diaz as a contender

If so, and if Kampmann loses to Shields, then he’ll be a good choice to improve his standing. Another couple options are Hardy and Swick. If he wins, then he’ll be one fight away from a title shot at WW and can possibly fight for the LW belt right away if Maynard is the champ.

If not, then give him Pierce or Fitch. Given how easily Stevenson handled Diaz with wrestling, I expect Diaz to lose, but it will put either Pierce or Fitch on the path to a title shot. Well, Fitch has already earned the rematch, but he needs some filler fights.

by Mint on Sep 6, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I would love to see him fight BJ Penn at 170. There is no possible way this’ll ever happen, but I’d like to see BJ fight a Diaz brother at some point.

Rematch

Is a waste of friggin time. As is gsp rematch. I’m starting to get real aggravated by these Dana hasn’t made $hit up to the fans and these title rematches are getting sickening. Silva isn’t giving the fans the more important fights. I think silva vs gsp is long over due there needs to b more super fights the fans pay the bills. Also I’m bs about the lhw strap sitting idle for so long. There is no way in hell rashad should b allowed to sit and wait. When a number 1 contender can b made even more clear if rashad truely is he shouldn’t worry because if he is he won’t lose if he does then he shouldn’t have been fighting for the strap. I personally believe the machida vs page should fight bones then the winner of that fight tashad for contender it’s 3am so maybe I’m a little delusional but I’ve been upset by the main events and co main events. No way in hell toney should have been co.

Because you called Jeremy Stephens, Stephenson like Guillard did after he knee-fucked Waylon Lowe’s stomach. Because it’s funny to act holier than thou and kind of make fun of a fighter who is all fired up after a highlight reel drubbing for forgetting the name of the guy he wants to call out (keeping in mind that everyone probably forgets who the hell Jeremy Stephens is from time to time.

And for the record Guild probably wouldn’t fight Joe Stevenson because they are both at Jackson’s camp and Greg Jackson refuses to let his fighters fight each other because God forbid someone supercede his control of his fighters.

by Bloodsport on Sep 6, 2010 2:13 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Never will happen

I simply don’t think Nate will ever be good enough. To hold a belt. Maybe from Edgar because Maynard will beat him. He just happens to have Penns number I think he was the only man in the division that could beat Penn. Anyways back to my point I don’t FBI k Diaz is good enough plain and simple I dint believe he is even mature enough to hold a title. David almost had him in trouble when he decided to show bout (which personally I think is disrespect and there’s no room in fighting for fighters who don’t fully respect they’re opponent you don’t have to like them but respect is the first thing taught in any art). Diaz would get slaughtered by GSP or any top 5 ww. At light weight I think Penn or Maynard or any top wrestler can beat him don’t get me wrong Diaz is growing and stands more of a chance at LW then he does WW but he couldn’t beat the top 3 guys. In any division. I do believe however he could beat Edgar I still can’t pull myself to beloved him the true champ he beat Penn but every Goliath has his David. Like I said hrs the only man in the div that can beat Penn. O believe there’s a few problems for Edgar in the lw div and he will not reign it ends at Maynard then Penn will beat 2 fights away from a shot.

Nate will NEVER (ok probably never) win the welterweight title

Nate is essentially a downgrade version of his brother Nick. Almost identical body types and fighting styles but what Nate does, Nick does just a bit better. Along that line of thought, the Diaz brothers, despite training with Melendez and Shields have just completely thrown out the concept of wrestling in their game. What fighters rule the welterweight division? Wrestlers. GSP, Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch even still Matt Hughes are the sharks swimming in the upper-echelon waters of the division. Who’s Nate lost to? Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson, strong wrestlers but nowhere near the level of the welterweight elite not to mention the sheer size difference. If Nate ever hopes to hold the welterweight crown, he either needs to spend serious time on his wrestling or develop such an unbelievable bottom game that even the most wt-blanket wrestlers will be afraid to go there.

Diaz is getting ambitious

which I guess is good. But he’s not ready for top 3 in either weight class. And he shouldn’t fight lightweight anymore. 170 is fine for him, he should put on some muscle while fighting some lower or mid-tier guys and see if he can get some momentum going.

I consider myself a softcore fan.

by Thor77 on Sep 6, 2010 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

This is assuming, and we all know about that, but

It appears Diaz uses more of a weight loss approach (maybe mixed with some poor cutting techniques) to get to 155. Not quite Irwin-esq or anything, but not well done.

I could be way off, as one really can’t tell from pics, but he doesn’t appear to be a guy who walks around more than 170-175. As such, he should be able to easily make LW with a proper cut and still enter the cage at 170ish with full strength.

Diaz should stay at 170.

He just won his last two fights at 170 convincingly and looked great doing it. Why go back down in weight? Some comments here are suggesting Swick but I think he’ll move back up to 185, at least I think he should.
And all the talk of him having trouble with all the wrestlers at 170 is understandable but I would still like to see him fight them. Diaz looks much stronger and more comfortable at 170 and I would like to see him stay there. If he can’t handle the stronger wrestlers at welterweight then let’s see the proof. He’s an exciting fighter and it makes for some new and interesting matchups even if he never fights for the title.
I don’t think that he should fight a top 3 fighter yet but give him a step up in competition from Davis and see what he can do. The winner of Lytle-Serra or Sanchez-Thiago makes the most sense.

by Lunchbox15 on Sep 6, 2010 11:35 AM EDT reply actions

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt at LET

Edgar would have trouble with him, IMO. Maynard already showed he wanted no part of Diaz’s guard. I’m not sure he can out box him again. BJ is an interesting match up. I could see that being a wild fight. At 170 he doesn’t really have a chance. They’re just too big with too much sub defense.

I think in five years, if he isn’t brain dead, his Jiu Jitsu and strength will improve enough to make him a real threat at WW

"I trained with Steven Seagal."

by B.H. Farnsworth on Sep 6, 2010 12:17 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

WW is not for him

Its probably too late for him to add enough wrestling to be relevant, and he would have to add 15-20 #s of muscle to compete with the larger WWs. Not to mention that his BJJ won’t help much against GSP now or guys like Askren or Hendricks in the future.

His best bet is to learn to cut weight properly and fight where he belongs – at LW. Unless BJ has really fallen off a cliff with his BJJ, he takes Diaz with ease. Can’t see him having much for Edgar either, and hopefully Maynard has worked enough on his sub defense to not be so worried about that part any more.

i disagree

He doesn’t have enough on his punches @ 55. He is too tall for 155, you can’t cut bone weight. I would like to see him bigger at 170.

You must really hate Diaz, if you're rooting for Maynard :P

I don’t know if he can beat Frankie, but his reach and constant punching could make things hard for him. I also think his long ass limbs would be hard for Edgar to contain on the ground. The way Gray acted last time they fought, I’m not sure he’ll ever want back in Diaz’s guard.
I don’t think BJ would even try to take Nate down. I’d pick BJ, but I think Nate could make it a fight.

“The way Gray acted last time they fought, I’m not sure he’ll ever want back in Diaz’s guard.”

The way Gray fought against Diaz would probably lose against Florian, too. I don’t think Maynard will fight that way again, because he knows that he won by a slim and controversial margin with that poor strate. It’s pretty easy to predict a win for Maynard, or at least the outcome of the fight is 80% in control of Maynard regardless of what Diaz does.

Still, it’s a marketable fight, whether Maynard gets the title not. The only other contenders they have are Dunham and Sotiropoulos, who will probably fight each other to create a guaranteed contender.

by Mint on Sep 7, 2010 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Give him a top 3 opponent.

Let him get Fitch’d at WW and he’ll want to go back to LW because he wont be able to handle all the big wrestlers at WW

by IRodC on Sep 6, 2010 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

Didn't we already do this song and dance?

After he beat Pellegrino, he asked for tougher competition, and lost two in a row to Guida and Stevenson. Now, he beats Marcus Davis, and he wants to fight tougher guys again.

Let’s say he doesn’t fight a wrestler. Let’s say he fights a guy on the top of his game with a lot of punching power, like Alves or Hardy. He’s going to get snapped like a twig. Aside from the fact that most top guys out there are simply better fighters than he is, they’re also going to be quite a bit stronger, and you can’t really work the jab when a guy considerably stronger has either kicked your legs out or put your brain on a proverbial skillet.

Both Nate and Nick are tough dudes, but I don’t really think either of them have what it takes to really hit the highest of highs at Welterweight. Aside from the lack of wrestling, neither of them has a lot of power either. No offense meant, but I think they’re overrated.

by MicahC on Sep 6, 2010 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

Diaz's punking of Marcus Davis was much more impressive than Hardy's SD.

I find a Dan Hardy / Nate Diaz fight intriguing. Just imagine the shit-talking leading up to the fight!!
I also think Nate would tool Swick, but there are much better matchups for Nate at 170. He doesn’t have much of a chance against the strong wrestlers at WW, but there are a lot of predominantly stand-up fighters in that division that would be exciting fights to watch: Hardy, Johnson, Howard, Swick, Thiago, list can go on and on.
