Should Edgar vs. Maynard be free?
The UFC now has a new LW champ, who successfully defeated a legend in the sport in back to back victories. Despite this astonishing feat, Frankie Edgar still has a long ways to go in terms of popularity. He has tremendous heart and dedication, but a compelling personality is still wanting on his part. It's hard to argue that he isn't popular because he's a "nice guy" or a wrestler, when you have athletes like GSP or Jon Jones increasing their fan base every match. Edgar has shown that he can evolve and mix up his arsenal with some very crisp boxing and fast footwork, but he may not get to showcase those talents in his next bout. Gray Maynard, who won seven of his last eight fights via tedious decision, is an unabashed grinder, in terms of his style. Once he starts his chain of takedowns, you know exactly where the match is going. He's never been known as a crowd pleaser; this style has kept him from reaching his title shot sooner. Edgar and Maynard rarely engage in prolonged trash talk, and haven't seem to master the art of selling a fight. The UFC could do a Countdown Specials for a month leading up to the fight, and still do dismal numbers. I think Edgar and Maynard would get far more exposure by having the bout as the first free UFC title fight to air live on Spike, and the card packed with brawlers to offset the five round grindfest that will be the main event. The number of viewers will pick up as the card progresses and a much larger audience will get a chance to see the new champ face a new challenger.

Should it be free? Yes.
Will it be free? Only if Dana snatches a network TV deal, which really means no.
Mo Johnston is what John Schneider could be in 4 years.

The Hendo vs. Rampage fight to unify the Pride and UFC MW titles was the first free title fight on Spike.

That fight was not live on Spike it was on tape delay
But otherwise you’re correct. And boy that was an awesome fight and a great card (sans Kongo’s dick kicks and Hamill’s loss).
Mo Johnston is what John Schneider could be in 4 years.
Kongo....
Don’t remind me of that asshole. I remember in an interview he said he got mad that Mirko said he nutshotted him so Kongo through another nutshot on purpose to get him back for it. Slimy pos.

Who wins in a death match...
ImmortalTechnique92 or MrTechnique420. To much “Technique” to call.
I kid, I kid ;)
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." - Jack Burton
Considering I'm immortal
I think we can safely say who wins.

Chris Lytle, Ricardo Almeida, and Dong Hyun Kim
disagree with your premise.

I think we all know Brown would have used a hatchet against Almeida.

No, you put it on a card with a big name. I'd put it as the co-main event with Silva/Sonnen 2
My avatar has Bas Rutten and Terry Funk in it...therefore it's the manliest avatar on SB Nation.
Dana is already giving us 2 free cards in the next few months he doesn’t owe anyone anything.
The fact is the UFC has proven the can sell anything the idea that business would end if god forbid Edgar and Maynard fought for the LW title is silly.

Quick! Name me the last time a lightweight other than BJ Penn was in the main event of a UFC PPV.
Mo Johnston is what John Schneider could be in 4 years.
Er...lightweight fight with no BJ Penn involved.
Mo Johnston is what John Schneider could be in 4 years.
That was on Spike
But good try.
So that’s why Nightwhistler’s argument is nonsensical.

Those 2 events are taking place in Europe.
Those are always free, and UFC 122 has probably the worst lineup on paper of a numbered UFC event ever.
I dont know but
it should come with free pillows
In my valued opinion
they should all be free. Oh wait they are free online. Silly me
I'm gonna give you three seconds; exactly three-fucking-seconds to wipe that stupid looking grin off your face or I will gouge out your eyeballs and skull-fuck you!
It should be free
Dana said after 112 that he owed us a big fight for free on TV….he has yet to give that to us. Most people think they deserve an ‘eye for an eye’ in that we got a sh!tty title fight, we should get a free title fight.
Edgar vs Maynard is the best choice for Dana White…when compared to all of the other titles that could be faught over for free on TV, having Edgar vs Maynard for free, they would be losing the least when compared to how much they would make off of that fight on PPV, which wouldn’t be a whole lot.
CPG
Agree, but I feel bad for Edgar
Edgar does everything he can to make the fight entertaining. He’s a wrestler that stands up and gets in as many strikes as he can. However, the public just isn’t that impressed with LWs, especially an undersized one that has no chance of moving up to 170 and wowing us like BJ did.
A card highlighted by a grudge match or contenders match in the higher weight classes probably wouldn’t gain many buys if Edgar-Maynard was on there.
I think Belfort/Okami is the big fight
For free.
Mo Johnston is what John Schneider could be in 4 years.
I'd like it to be free
b/c I love getting free fights. So I voted for that. But in reality, I doubt it will happen. They’ll either put some kickass supporting fights with it and it’ll do fine, or it may just end up being a lower-buy card.
I consider myself a softcore fan.
sure
sure
why not toss us a little one like this for free?
niether have shown to have any fireworks
in their arsenal
and the odds are
they will wallow thru five rounds of takedown defnse
and posturing
One of the main reasons I think the fight should be free is to give exposure to Edgar and Maynard. A lot of the casual fans aren’t really familiar either fighter, unlike B.J. Penn. Penn has enough name recognition to headline major cards (i.e. UFC 94, 101). An optimistic guess for PPV buys would be around 500k. That number could easily be doubled, and the re-airing of the card will hit the viewer that missed it. If the UFC went this route, they would likely get more bang for their buck once the next title fight rolled around, and much of the stress in terms of introductions would be reduced if if they went for a UFC Countdown push.
