Quote of the Day: Cole Miller Is Not a Fan of Frankie Edgar
"People finishing fights is a big topic right now and that’s how I fight. You look at Frankie in both fights with B.J. (Penn) and it seems that no one wants to fight right now. Fans see these guys like (Frankie) Edgar or these other bouncy wrestler types and fans are like "oh, he fights you everywhere," when in reality they don’t fight you anywhere. They just want to hit you three or four times, shoot in for a takedown, stay on the ground for a minute or so then get back up. They want to wear you down because they don’t want to fight you on the ground either."
"It’s great to be in shape but these guys are surviving and that’s not what martial arts is about. ... How can you back a guy who is just surviving and running away? These wrestlers are just trying to take you out of your game because all that apparently matters anymore is the takedown. ... These guys can keep getting their hands raised for now and they can keep "shooting for the win" ...but the time is coming man. If it was me, I’d feel shameful if I didn’t do all I could to finish. I feel shamed for them when I watch it happen. Score your points boys, don’t worry about putting anybody out or finishing a fight, just score your points. Look at guys like Martin Kampmann, Nate Diaz, Nick Diaz, Nate Marquardt, Miguel Torres and B.J. Penn. All of these guys are out there and they are looking to put people out and doing their thing; hell even Demian Maia is starting to put guys out."

Speak the truth Cole!
I don’t see myself forking over the money for a Maynard v Edgar fight at all. I like when people finish or put themselves out there trying to finish. The fact that it came from BJPenn.com doesn’t shit because it’s the truth. When I see the fight card and can point out the decisions then you shits fucked.

They don’t market the lightweight division all that much anyways. But that style of fighting is killin me. I used to be a huge GSP fan but his last couple fights make me not want to put the money out as well. I know I’ll get murdered for saying that but that’s what I see.

Edgar
Is the only guy in those matchups, aside from mr. local guy of course since I hear he’s a beast, that isn’t a blanket. When is the last time that he LnP’d someone? I’m sick of people badmouthing Frankie for not knocking out a guy that has only been KO’d/TKO’d twice, one of which was a corner stoppage, and both by WW’s!!!!!
Side note: Since when has Demian Maia not tried to finish fights? He’s got 5 Sub of the night awards!!!! Cole is out of line with this.
It was joke, I’d still pay to see that imaginary fight card

Scoring points wins fights just like finishing fights does, does he hate his own sport?
The judging system that awards points based on dominant positions?
What does he want to change? Or is he simply satisfied with complaining about the things that occur around him?
Also this wasn’t an interview at all, if you look at the full article it’s just one giant paragraph of ranting.
Awful.
That’s not the point at all. You could go through an entire baseball game and win if your whole team had players that were experts at bunting, but would fans really want to see that? Remember a perfect bunt really has no defense, and a perfect squeeze can’t be stopped. If the Yankees did that for an entire season, would people complain? Damn straight they would. No one is saying that just trying to ‘score’ is wrong or illegal but the real reason the sport is popular is because of the possibility of a finish. People know watching a Jon Fitch fight that it will go to a decision and likely be a boring fight, so they won’t watch (or will just neglect that fight and take a piss). That doesn’t help the sport at all and only exploits the negative parts of the game.

Nice analogy
This idea that all wins are equal and that we as fans should treat all styles and approaches equally is bizarre.

poor analogy and here's why
First and foremost you are comparing a team sport with an inidividual one. In baseball, how your teammates execute obviously has an effect on your own choices and execution. In mma, this is not the case. If 4 bouts go the distance and are “snoozers”, and you’re fighting 5th it has no influence on how you will choose to fight. And what constitutes a “finish” in baseball, a homerun? A finish in either sport is a W in my book. Now if you bunt everytime in baseball teams will adjust to your strategy. You will probably see the 1b and the 3b at a distance where they could give the batter a handshake. And as a result, you will see less bunting, and less “boring” baseball. So, if any comparison between these 2 sports is somewhat linear its the need for adjustment to overtake the opposition’s ability to use what’s perceived as “boring” or “cheap” tactics to secure a w. The issue with mma is that players can’t effectively shut down that aspect as they can in baseball. Perhaps rule changes need to be implemented, but I dont think there is enough cause for that yet. A better option would be for those fighters who complain about it to find better ways to combat it.
It always seems very weak when a fighter starts complaining about another's style.
Winning is the ultimate goal, regardless of style.
However, I would like to see things like cage control and takedowns demoted in terms of scoring so that the in effect don’t matter. They should be seen more as a form of maneuver that positions you to inflict damage rather than an end in and of themselves.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
I would like to see the fights restarted on the ground if people stall on the feet, but that is also unlikely to ever occur :(
The counter argument to this is that the fighter on the bottom should work from the bottom to get back to the feet, sweep, throw offensive strikes, or try to submit. However, doing BJJ myself, if someone is holding me down, I pretty much have to wait for the guy on top of me to do something and then react. I am not a fan of someone like Maynard because he looks like he is intentionally stalling and trying to just kill the clock.
wtf at maia
He tapped out everyone. What the hell is he talking about.

hell even Demian Maia is starting to put guys out."
lolwut
1) Maia has always been a finisher
2) This is the first point in his career where his last two wins came by decision.
hell even Demian Maia is starting to put guys out."
I think that that statement might have been taken the wrong way on here. He said:
"
Look at guys like Martin Kampmann, Nate Diaz, Nick Diaz, Nate Marquardt, Miguel Torres and B.J. Penn. All of these guys are out there and they are looking to put people out and doing their thing; hell even Demian Maia is starting to put guys out."
I could be wrong but to me it sounds like he is including Demian Maia in the same group as the other fighters that are looking to put people out. He is not saying that Maia isn’t trying to finish guys. Am I alone in thinking that?
It’s no big deal, but “starting” is the operative word. He’s always finished guys, and only recently hasn’t been able to. He still completely goes for it though.

Yeah
I am a little confused as to exactly what he meant I guess. He says “starting” but Maia was finishing everyone when he came into the UFC. AND he tried soooo hard to finish Mario Miranda, anyone could tell that. I would like to know exactly what he meant by that statement.
I assume he just added that on as an afterthought, without thinking it through. Maybe Demian’s non-violent approach just gave him the impression that he doesn’t “destroy” opponents, when of course, taking limbs and necks is as destructive as it gets:)

The same way I think that people that say that submission losses are not really losses...
…should not be allowed to tap, I think that people that complain about takedowns being given too much credit should have to fight on concrete.
So let me get this straight Frankie doesn’t want to fight, all he did was run away and was only looking to survive do I have that right?.
If this is a true quote than Cole Miller is either a fucking idiot or a pathetic butthurt Penn fan. Because Frankie more than fought BJ, he beat his ass in all aspects of the fight he stood with him traded with him grappled with him and at the end of the fight looked like he could go 5 more rounds.
Instead of worrying about the LW champ, maybe he needs to worry about his career all this talk of I finish fights is nice when you are fighting Junie. But when you fight a legit guy like Escudero you get knocked the fuck out, here’s a newsflash for all of you tough talking bad assess. No one gives a fuck about you if you don’t win, that’s why Frankie is headlining UFC ppv’s and you aren’t even worth mentioning in the LW discussion.

Cole Miller is one loss away from his walking papers, oh and btw “he don’t finish fights either” …….. he loses them.
Fear is temporary regret is for ever.
Cole Miller does finish fights
And he has only lost 2 of his 6 UFC fights with only 1 decision in his UFC career. Not sure what you are talking about with the whole " one loss away from his walking papers" either tbh, he has won his last 3 of 4 with a SOTN win over Lauzon in his last fight…

I love this debate!
Edgar v. Maynard won’t resolve it. But hopefully, Nate Diaz’s return to LW will help stoke it.
Diaz does need a few more losses.
Send him back to LW so he can offset his recent wins with some losses.
Guy speaks his mind
…and some folks here want him silenced. I wonder if a certain subset of MMA fans will only be happy when the fighters are as guarded and boring as athletes in every other sport?

I've skipped some segements of the discussion...
but who “wants him silenced”?
There is a difference between wanting someone silenced and making fun of him for saying something stupid.
I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.
Well Jonathan,
he can espouse whatever he chooses to espouse. But I find his candor much less inspiring than you do. He is a less than stellar fighter criticizing those who would thrash him any where a fight went; and you are a journalist?
this is like "stop snitchin"
Who says “stop snitchin”? People doing shit that they don’t want to be held accountable for. Who do they say it to? People who have no vested interest or loyalty to that individual. They are just trying to manipulate everyone around them to get what they want, by twisting the situation for their own benefit, while masking it as an ideal that they realize most hold in high regard.
Now to Mr Miller: his, what I will call “stop huggin” philosphy,is very similar to “stop snitchin”. Peeps all huggin on his shit and survivin and scorin points is the exact opposite of the strategy that he wants his opponents to have. The question is what fighter in his right mind would listen to him and fight how he wants them to fight him, just as what citizen would not do everything they could to get some thug put away for things they do not condone, and affects their quality of life. There is no loyalty in that regard, yet they try to portray one as ludicrous as it may seem. In mma your opponent is in the ring to defeat you, and if they don’t do it in a way you approve of, and it’s within the rules of the sport, then tough titties. Cole recognizes that people think the “lay and pray” style is boring but more importantly it doesnt mesh at all well with his own fighting style. This is the true reason he’s supporting such sentiments.
