Did Yves Lavigne Really Make Statements About Josh Koscheck's Chances vs. Georges St. Pierre?
From the Twitter account of David Simon of RingsideReport.net:
Wrote an e-mail to the author of the Yves Lavigne story en français. Yves says he didn't do the interview. Waiting for response from author.
If this is true the site that ran the piece (canoe.com) is going to have a lot of explaining to do and I would fully expect Lavigne to pursue his legal options. The story impacted the public perception of Yves as well as his reputation with the fighters that he officiates. We also know that Josh Koscheck followed up on the piece with statements that Lavigne would never ref one of his fights again. I'm sure other fighters feel the same way about a referee that would publicly make such statements and this could have greatly impacted the career of Yves.
Lending some credibility to the idea that Lavigne did not give the interview is the fact that Canoe has pulled the interview from their site. I'll be looking forward to hearing more on this story.
(Translation of the original Canoe "interview" can be found at Watch Kalib Run)
Update: Dave Simon adds via Twitter:
Just got an e-mail from Yves Lavigne with the following 3 statements: 1. "I NEVER gave an interview to that journalist ... Yves Lavigne comment 2. "I NEVER gave an interview regarding GSP vs Koscheck" and 3. "My lawyer is taking care of this matter.
Great job by Simon of following up on this and not a shock at all to hear that Yves has his lawyer all over it.
Update 2: Simon posts a story at Ringside Report.

The only reason to get worked up if it's true is that
it would then put a question in the fans mind about a bias regarding fights. Giving someone more time to fight back/early stoppages which would affect bets.

The thing is. If they didn’t record the interview they’re irresponsible anyway. You’ll never see an interview published on BloodyElbow that we don’t have a copy of for exactly this reason.
So it’s either recorded and Yves is in trouble, or it’s not recorded and A) didn’t happen or B) there is no proof of it happening which might as well mean it didn’t happen.

To not have a record is ridiculous. I think the fact it was pulled shows either it was made up or not recorded. And as you said, both basically mean it was made up.

It would be entirely unrealistic to think that refs don’t have strong opinions on fighters (same with judges) it’s impossible to both be closely involved with an activity and not have an opinion on participants of that activity. But if he’s actually in public making those statements, that would be insane.

Yves is saying he didn’t say it, the author says he did.
Yves also says he didn’t give an interview on GSP vs Koscheck. I found a radio interview from the same day that has him talking about that fight and how GSP should win.

Dave Simon got on the phone with Yves Lavigne immediately after hearing about Le Journal de Montréal’s accusations.
This isn’t the first time Le Journal has created such a debacle. Remember when Loiseau was denied his license to fight at UFC 113 in Montreal? It all started at Le Journal de Montréal with their accusations that he was linked to the mob. The paper’s real writers can be read at Rue Frontenac here: http://ruefrontenac.com. It’s also possible that his lawyer told him not to make any statements until they looked into the situation. The first is, he already said “I didn’t give an interview to that writer”. So if he’s said that, there’s no need to further say “I didn’t give an interview about GSP/Koscheck”.

Oh and I don't want him to be "blackballed" or anything like that
I just reported what I read and gave my opinions. I do think Koscheck has a legit gripe and that most fans are gonna fall on the anti-Koscheck side no matte what because they dislike him.
Him being on the radio saying that Josh was “boring” and favoring GSP in a rematch is enough of a taint to me if I’m Koscheck.
I know refs have opinions, I just don’t want to hear them. And people saying “McCarthy has said things too” is not valid either.

Speaking of the David Loiseau thing
I just found that it’s the same guy, Vincent Morin, who wrote that article about Loiseau.
Loiseau is suing Corporation Sun Media & Québécor Media for half a million dollars over the accusations in the article tying him to the mob.
Why does Vincent Morin hate MMA and why is such a shitty journalist being paid for this?

No.
If you printed something (like an article in a major national newspaper) that said that (after she “told” you) and then when I call you on it, you put up something saying “This information was not obtained in the best of ways” instead of an outright retraction and then I said “I did not punch my wife” (which doesn’t mean I didn’t beat her, just that I didn’t use my fists), now it’s applicable.

Yves hasn’t denied making the comments.
Which seems more likely to you, Off the record comments or wholly made up quotes?
The original story has not been retracted.
Yves was also on the radio talking about GSP vs Koscheck among other things.
I just want the truth. And if Mr. Lavigne did not make those comments and it wasn’t him on the radio discussing the fight, I will make apologize with the same fervor. That is just how I write and I am. It was the same way with the Carwin thing. This too will get it’s due diligence.

okay, so everybody's making a big deal out of this
i’ve read the piece on watchkalibrun and it somehow failed to anger me. what are people exactly having a problem with?
that he as a ref has opinions on fighter’s performances? or that he boldly favours GSP in that fight?
Go big red!
That kind of blatant bias is frowned upon greatly when it comes to being a referee in professional sports…you have to appear to be as neutral as humanly possible, obviously, because you’re the third man in the ring. Also take into account that he could have very well been reffing this fight if this wasn’t ever published…
I understand ref’s are people, and fans. I would love to hear their opinion on some things, but you know what, most of them don’t say shit to anyone, why? Because things like this happen.

well, once he enters the ring he should be as neutral as humanly possible
even if he did give that interview, i wouldn’t mind the things he said. i don’t think he’s that good of a ref to begin with, i always hope that he doesn’t mess anything up when he’s refing a fight i’m really interested in.. but still: his performance on fight night (should he ref that fight) will have to speak for itself and it’s going to be out there for everyone to see and judge; the things he says in his freetime don’t really play into that imho.
call me retarded, but (should he have said those things) i still fail to see any wrong.
Go big red!
The thing about it is
If he did get the fight he would, if anything, slightly favor Kos in any issues that came up, now that this is out there…

Off the record
I’d bet my paycheck yves said it but it was either to be off the record or as a quote from non named source. This journalist dropped yves in grease but I guarantee he said it, just like Jim gray with the tiger comments made about Ryder cup. This stuff happens in journalism.

Someone posted this in the comments section of WKR
It’s Yves making similar comments
1- Josh’s fight v Daley was very boring.
2- Radio asks what’s up with GSP’s most recent "boring performances". Lavigne replies that GSP failed to finish his opponents but still delivered.
3- It goes downhill at the end when the host asks Lavigne’s analysis on the fight. Lavigne says he thinks Georges is better all around.

Yeah...
I guess Yves saying Kos vs Daley was boring would be better left to Rogan to say.
What Yves says though about Kos vs GSP is Josh is a great wrestler who also learned how to box & that GSP dominated Kos in their first fight, then he talks about GSP’s training.

Basically
Rogan is an employee of the UFC paid to give commentary and his opinion.
Yves is a referee and employee of the commission paid to officiate events and be impartial.
We know he is not a robot and that he has opinions, it hurts his rep when he pubicizes those opinions. He can say the fans thought it was boring, but saying that he felt it was boring and that GSP’s similar style is not boring and that GSP should dominate Koscheck is above that line of impartiality.
