Sizzling September: Five Fights That Will Heat Up This Autumn

via UFC.com

Thirty one magical days. That's all it took to rekindle a passion for MMA that had been slowly slipping away.  Before August began, in the midst of a summer doldrums, I predicted it would be a heck of a month for the fight game:

All that is about to change next month when the summer finally heats up with great shows all over the map. The fights are amazing across the board, but there are several that I am chomping at the bit to see-five cards, five fights, in four different promotions.

I've never been happier to be right. Last month was one of the most amazing in MMA history. There were a series of great fights all over the map, the kind of fights that don't fade from memory, the kind of fights that make an impact. And as Cageside Seats writer Gene Mrosko points out, it wasn't just the usual suspects delivering the tremendous bouts. Even Japanese MMA pulled its head out of its fourth point of contact long enough to wow us all:

Sengoku though gave us what may have ended up being Fight of the Year. Jorge Santiago and Kazuo Misaki had an unbelievable rematch that went back and forth over the duration of the fight until Misaki's corner threw in the towel with less than 30 seconds remaining in the fight. The scores may have revealed a win for Misaki so the fact that his corner threw in the towel was questionable at first but he later revealed that it was the right decision. Instead of any sort of controversy involved in a decision we got a clean victory in an unreal fight.

August is now behind us and September is off to a great start. Two days in, and we've already got a classic: Bellator's Joe Warren and Joe Soto put themselves on the map as two stars to watch with a tremendous clash for the Bellator Featherweight gold. What else can we look forward to this month? I've got five fights that have me salivating after the break.

Star-divide

5. Antonio McKee vs. Luciano Azevedo: MFC 26 "Retribution," Sept. 10 -- Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

McKee is one of the sport's most controversial figures, at least amongst hardcore fans. Casual fans have no idea who he is - and to him, that's the problem. McKee, to put it kindly, fights very conservatively. You know the fights that fans boo in the arenas, the ones fans decry as "lay and pray?" McKee sometimes makes those fights look like Nick Diaz-Takanori Gomi. He hasn't lost since 2003. He's also only finished a single fight in that time frame (another opponent had to quit with an injury).

This time though, this time will be different. McKee promises he will finish the fight or retire. And Azevedo is no easy mark. He once choked out WEC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo and has fought some serious competition like Hayato Sakurai, Din Thomas, and Rodrigo Damm. This could be a very good fight, good enough to warm a chilly Canadian night.

4. Paul Daley vs. Jorge Masvidal: Shark Fights 13, Sept. 11 -- Amarillo, Texas

The former UFC bad boy is looking to come back strong. Jorge Masvidal is in the way. Although Daley has the UFC pedigree, I think Masvidal (at just 25) is actually a more promising prospect. This is just one of a smorgasboard of incredible fights on this Shark Fights card, headlined by Keith Jardine vs. Trevor Prangley. The announce crew of Bas Rutten and Don Frye is worth $29.95 on their own. Very promising night of fights in Amarillo.

3. Ryan Bader vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira: UFC 119, Sept. 25 -- Indianapolis, Indiana

UFC 119 has one of the worst main events in the modern era, a fight between Mirko Cro Cop and Frank Mir that might have wowed them in 2005, but in 2010, leaves my blood cold. What it does have, lurking just beneath the surface, is a great fight between Bader and the twin brother of his Ultimate Fighter coach.

Bader doesn't really get his due. In truth, he's probably the UFC's best prospect at 205 pounds. And this is the night he proves it.

2. Jeremy Horn vs. Bryan Baker: Bellator 30, Sept. 23 -- Louisville, Kentucky

It's a barely hidden secret that Jeremy Horn is one of my all-time favorite fighters. And I realize that his fight with Bryan Baker may not be on the minds of the masses. Too bad! This is my list; if you don't like it make your own! Seriously though, this is one of those interesting fights that shows how a young fighter is progressing. Baker has held his own with several UFC vets. If he beats Horn, I'd expect Joe Silva to be dialing his cell by the end of the night.

1. Mark Hominick vs. Leonard Garcia: WEC 51, September 30 -- Broomfield, Colorado

Leonard Garcia is an exciting fighter. Over and over again, from the USWF to the UFC, he's wowed the crowd with a level of violence that's unusual even for cagefighting. Hominick could be a great foil for him. Both are more than willing to throw down, and both have sneaky submission games as well. To top it off, Jose Aldo will follow the two in the main event. Another triumph of WEC matchmaking that no one will watch.

RE Bader as the best 205 prospect

Do you think he has the highest ceiling, or are you looking at JBJ’s eventual move to HW?

I’m not sure who I think is the better prospect, but on the subject of better wins I think it’s a matter of timing and context. JBJ may not have as high profile wins but he’s stormed the fighters he’s defeated. I know this doesn’t mean much but Hamill beat Jardine pretty handily and JBJ dominated him before the DQ.

Also, Bader definitely has a better wrestling pedigree but it’s hard to compare with Jones who had such an unorthodox way of getting into MMA. Also I’d say Jones is from the better camp. All that being said, I’d have no idea who to pick in a matchup since it’s too early to say for Jones.

I wish he knew the rules better

Because if he did there was no way Hamill was going to win that fight and if he survived the end of the round it would’ve been stopped due to the shoulder injury.

Mo Johnston is what John Schneider could be in 4 years.

Prospect

For predicting who is a better prospect. I think its better to count that as a win. Sure we can question Jones’s in ring composure a bit, but he dominated Hamill and that is what counts for forecasting purposes.

by SES 84 on Sep 3, 2010 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

And had the refereee...

bothered to figure out why Hamill couldn’t continue before ending the fight, Jones would be sitting with a TKO on his record and not a loss.

Jones may have committed a rules violation, but it was a reffing error that earned him the L for the Hamill fight.

I think he is 205's best prospect.

Cyrille Diabate? L.A. Cane? Meh?

I can’t think of a better young/new fighter at 205 than Bader.

I can only hope there are many more like-minded people out there...

Then sooner or later maybe we’ll get a Jones fight with him under -400 where at least a little money can be made…

At this point, if the fights were announced tomorrow, I can only see Machida as potentially giving him real difficulty at 205, but that could be a great, great fight, or a very one-sided fight for either guy…

The fight was good but definitely not FOTY worthy. Too many lulls on the ground in the early rounds. 4th and 5th can both be ROTY candidates but fight as a whole was slow at times.

Can’t see how anyone could say any fight other than Zombie/Garcia or Jabouin/Homenick is FOTY at this point.

Why can’t we care about fights and fighters without titles? Those two fighters create extreme emotional response from viewers. I completely disagree with the idea that it’s a throw away.

Agreed.

I have more emotional investment in Cro Cop than any other fighter I’ve never met.

This could be a very good fight too. Cro Cop historically has strong takedown and sub defense while Mir has awful takedowns and notoriously poor cardio. Mirko by TKO (PRIDE NEVER DIE), late in the second.

For myself, I enjoy any good fight, titlr or not, this one just does not interest me. I cant get past Mir being totally destroyed in 2 of his last 3 bouts and Mirko’s better years are behind him. Im not saying the fight is a total throw away, just a terrible main event that does not interest me that much.

I disagree about the main event sucking. Pat Barry cro cop fight was one of the best comeback wins i’ve seen in awhile and who doesnt love cro cop. When he took the mic from Rogan and started pacing and talking in croation(pride style) i flipped out! Cro Cop is a huge underdog in this fight but if he can beat Mir he will be contender status. Main events that are title fights are not always the most entertaining and to be honest I’m usually a bigger fan of the other fights on the card.

I don't respect this fight

Barry went from the aggressor in rd 1 to a “love fest” for the remainder of the fight. He walked into kicks and punches and laughed and “blew kisses” at Cro Cop from his corner in between rds.

It was a weird fight in my opinion.

Not taking anything from either as “fighters”. I just thought the fight lost it’s luster after Barry seemingly turned into a fan.

I somewhat agree, but I think you have to remember that HD broke his foot AND his hand in the first round. Otherwise we might have had a different outcome..

by Horselover Fat on Sep 3, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

what does that have to do

with blowing kisses?

i definitely agree it was weird but also think HD has a bright future if he can find his inner-beast.

No I definitely agree that there were too many showings of bromance in the cage, I’m not a fan of that kind of stuff during a fight. It’s best left to after the job is done, in a shady motel room..

What I’m saying though is that you could cut Pat some slack on not being as aggressive after he broke hand and foot, if he’d had all his weapons intact I think rounds 2 & 3 would not have turned out the same. He was obviously hesitant to strike but he had good reason, I don’t see it as just being too much respect for Cro-cop (but I agree there was some of that as well).

Hominick - Garcia

Now that’s going to be fun. Hominick is way more technical, creative and patient. He will murk Garcia, but it will be fun while it lasts.

I’m sorry as entertaining as Garcia is he’s won one too many favorable decisions.

Meh

Last time Hominick fought an undisciplined brawler, it was one of the worst fights I have ever seen (). I think Hominick might just jab and jog his way to a win the same way he did versus Jorge Gurgel.

by Steve4192 on Sep 3, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Hominick vs Garcia is #1 for me, for obvious reasons

Bader vs Nog gets me a little bit because I want to see how Nog handles the wrestling of Bader after that piss poor showing against Brilz.

I give Nog a little bit of a pass because Brilz wasn't his initial opponent

But I personally thought Brilz won that fight

I agree

Brilz got Machida vs Shogun 1’d. If that makes sense.

thats what I was looking for!

by MrTechnique420 on Sep 3, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Disagree

I thought it was a close fight where Nog won the first round, Brilz clearly the second (10-9), and the third one was a toss-up but I still had Nog winning it by a slight margin if I had to choose one.

I think the fact that Brilz so clearly (and unexpectedly) won the second round is somewhat clouding peoples perception of that decision. The other rounds were obviously very close but as I said I had Lil Nog winning them anyways.

I don’t see it as a controversial decision at all, although I would’ve been fine with a draw or Brilz win too.

Mir vs. Cro Cop is an interesting fight because of the style matchup.

Cro Cop’s TDD will keep this fight on the feet and Mir’s striking is not in the same league as Cro Cop’s. This is a fight Cro Cop can definitely win.

by Polyhedron on Sep 3, 2010 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

word son Mirko is no slouch on the ground work either he has beaten better submission artist than Mir in the past.

by mr. gogoplata on Sep 3, 2010 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I wish I could figure out why Mir,

Prick that many feel he is, gets so little love for his BJJ game…not going to be winning the Mundial’s, but he has a very good, if a little unorthadox, BJJ for MMA game…

Not saying he is bad at all but Cro Cop dominated Josh Barnett more than once and I consider him at a higher level than Mir. Mir seems to only be able to sumbit guys who are far below his bjj level.

by mr. gogoplata on Sep 3, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

True, but Barnett’s catch wrestling style =/= BJJ, despite his no-gi success competing as a white belt.

Mir, while seemingly not as technical as some, has adapted his well for MMA, both for positional control and submissions.

If the guy could just learn to take people down…and handle getting hit…and cardio…

Mir has awful positional control

and just dives for submissions. Just because Drysdale can do it doesn’t mean you can, Frank. He leaves himself open all the time for guys with basic grappling skill to neurtalize and the punish him. See: Brandon Vera and Brock Lesnar.

Also, how many submissions does Mir have outside of the first half of the first round? I’ll give you a hint. It’s none.

I just think its a riot seeing Snowden bash a Mir/Crocop main event and champion a Jardine/Prangley main event when he’s interviewing Don Frye. Because clearly Keith Jardine is a much more relevant fighter than Frank Mir.

It is an excuse to advertise for that event and a good one. He doesn’t pretend it’s not an opinion.

I’m a big fan of Mirko’s and the fight would be much more relevant if he had more time to train for this fight.

UFC 119 has one of the worst main events in the modern era, a fight between Mirko Cro Cop and Frank Mir that might have wowed them in 2005, but in 2010, leaves my blood cold

Funny I feel the same about this article, if these are the 5 fights that are supposed to heat up Autumn then it’s time to break out the winder gear. Seriously can we can 2 piece from you that doesn’t have a bitter anti-zuffa shot hidden in the article it’s becoming a bad running joke here. .

Baker has held his own with Chael Sonnen

I think Baker is a fantastic prospect, and was absolutely shocked when Zuffa decided to cut him, but he did not hold his own versus Chael Sonnen. That fight was like a snuff film. Sonnen just beat him down for 15 minutes and Baker offered no resistance.

by Steve4192 on Sep 3, 2010 4:53 PM EDT reply actions

Bader doesn’t really get his due. In truth, he’s probably the UFC’s best prospect at 205 pounds.

didn’t check author on post and read all the way to here before I realized, well, this must be Snowden.

lol at thinking Bader would beat Jones now, or even in 2-3 years (barring significant injury, etc)

Well, I guess that's one thing we agree on Snowden

I love watching Jeremy Horn fight. He’s an mma legend and one of my favorites of all time. I can’t wait for his fight against Rosholt at King of the Cage in October either.
