UFC 123: Lyoto Machida Training With Mike Swick at AKA
Mike Swick tweeted that Lyoto Machida is changing things up and will be training at the American Kickboxing Academy for a few weeks to prepare for his UFC 123 bout against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson:

It’s hard to think how far Swick has fallen initially out of all the TUF 1 guys I always thought he had the most potential to do something with his career boy was I wrong.

do something with his career
like fighting in the top MMA organization for the last 5 years, and accruing a 9-3 record? Like fighting for contender status in his 2nd to last fight?
Or is winning the belt the only thing that would demonstrate having done something with his career?

You forgot Phil Davis.
And with all those names, I’m really wondering where to find the “Kickboxing” in American Kickboxing Academy. They really are more like RAW 2.0 with special guest star Cung Le.
I think Phil just visits from time to time, and is not reallly with them.

yep,
with Dominick Cruz, Brandon Vera, etc…

Speaking of those guys, Alexander Gustafsson is over there right now for a couple of weeks training in preparation for his bout with Cyrille Diabate at UFC 120. He has become good buddies with Phil Davis it seems from his blog.

hmmm. interesting.
well Phil does seem to be a very likable guy.
by Anton Tabuena on Sep 28, 2010 6:59 AM EDT up reply actions
That’s really refreshing to hear considering that Davis and Gustafsson were opponents not to long ago. I remember hearing a similar story about Sonnen and Okami as well being former opponents but ending up training together.

Yeah, I’m liking it too, they’re both good guys. Also it’s a great opportunity for Gustafsson to be able to travel to the states and train with good camp, it’s his first time in the US. I think especially to improve his wrestling and overall ground game, but sparring with guys like Brandon Vera can’t hurt his stand-up game either.
Here’s a pic (probably a little cut off due to us being so far right on the page, but I’ll try):

Nah I can see them clearly
Only the elbow is cut off.
Right...LOLZ
I can’t see any realistically possible path to victory for Rampage in this fight.
He hasn’t demonstrated flash KO ability in too many years…Keith Jardine!
He’s gonna get clowned. Badly.

Machida KO'd by Rampage
LMAO…..really? I find it really hard to believe that Rampage will win this one. Really, really hard. But then again, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night

Rashad was way too quick for Rampage and Lyoto make Rashad look downright slow.
If we thought Forrest wrecked Page’s shit with leg kicks, Lyoto might kick them clean off. Hopefully Tiki brings some crutches down to the Ocatagon. Nah, he would just carry him.

Actually, the Rashad that fought Rampage had remember that he can wrestle
Instead of just trying to “counter the counter” after having James McSweeney roleplay Lyoto…
RAMPAGE BY KNOCKOUT
i don’t know why
but i just don’t like machida
i think it’s the hype train that was behind him but i dunno what it is that i don’t like about him
that being said
i see it being very hard for rampage to hit lyoto……..rampage is just too flat footed
however i’m still crossing my fingers and hoping for that big swooping hail mary hip and ass punch from rampage that will knock lyoto out

yeah i actually do like both of them
which would kinda speak against me not liking machida because of the hype
i think with jones and oliveira i’m more curious about exactly how good they’ll become because they’re both just kids still.
i have no good reason for not liking machida and i don’t hate him
but i never pull for him to win
(except against tito)

Depends on which Machida we see at the fight
If Machida fights like he did in Shogun/Machida 2 his chances of getting KO’d are very high. If Machida fights in his normal “elusive” style then Machida wins probably by points. I think he’s going to be too sensitive to getting tangled in a brawl to bring enough aggression to KO Page unless Page gasses badly.
by squaresphere on Sep 28, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Rampage needs to watch out
or he may start a Jardine esque slide into irrelevancy.
His new counter boxing/defensive wrestling only style just won’t cut it against the top guys at 205. Other than being probably the most powerful light heavy I don’t know what else he has going for him against Lyoto.
He better charge Machida like a man possessed and hope for the best.
People do not like to think. If one thinks, one must reach conclusions. Conclusions are not always pleasant.
- Helen Keller
I hate to point out the obvious, but
That slide has already started. He is still destined for glorified gatekeeper status by mid-to-late 2011.
With the probable exception of Jon Jones, this is the worst match-up for him among the elite at LHW.

Glad to see he’s mixing it up a bit. Training partners like Andy, the Nogs and JDS will get you far, but it’s never a bad idea to mix it up and see what else is out there.

He clearly means that overall going to different camps would help more in the long run. I mean the whole Black House is just like “Hey, let’s box! Let’s do bjj!” I mean, their idea of wrestling is bringing in Mark “Even Kendall Grove can stuff my shots” Munoz and Chase “I’m a heavyweight wrestler so they brought me in but I’m not actually that good” Gormley. If anything, putting in a little time with camps like AKA will help round Machida and hopefully make a few changes to put him on top and keep him there.
uhhh, Black House is a GREAT camp.
Lyoto was receiving flack for ‘not mixing it up’, not because of Black House, but cause he decided to just stay in Belem and train with his Family for majority of camp.
by Anton Tabuena on Sep 28, 2010 11:16 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Agreed.
Black House is amazing. They have elite strikers, master BJJ practitioners. They may be missing a bit of talent in wrestling, but Munoz is actually very knowledgeable. He’s a Division I wrestler. He knows a lot of theory behind wrestling, it’s just that he can’t apply it to himself when he fights in the Octagon.

Wrestling isn’t a weakness of Lyoto’s anyway…

Wrestling is great
Pinning opponents down, not so much. He would’ve grinded out Shogun otherwise.
by ultima0chaotic on Sep 28, 2010 9:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah you do have a point there. It may only be an issue against Shogun, but right now that’s a HUGE issue. But I think his top control is decent, it’s just that Shogun is no joke off his back. I’d be interested to see Lyoto against Jonny Bones and Randy. I guess I think of punching power as Lyoto’s main weakness. His power is decent, but it depends a lot on spearing opponents with straight punches as they rush in.

Funny thing is, he did this while Thiago Silva trained with ATT
And had it not been for the last punch being a KO, round 1 it still would have been a hilarious curbstomp.
Good idea
I’m actually a big fan of Machida. Glad to see him mixing things up a bit. I’m not sure I’d would have gone to AKA if I were him, not exactly a home of champions, but it’s better than seeing another guy go to Greg Jackson.
Maybe the home of champions
Well, they have two chances in three months to be the home of champions.
Nope

He's already trained there before
Wrestling against friggin’ Velasquez before the Tito Ortiz fight.
I still can’t believe Rampage took this fight. He has been on the record many times saying how he thought Lyoto was a borring fighter and a fight between them would be borring. He might be right, I could see a cautious Lyoto just circling around a slow and plodding Rampage for 3 rounds.
Nowadays he claims that he'll hunt Machida down and take him out
Too bad the last guy that vowed to hunt him down and make him fight was Thiago Silva… in one of the worst performances against Machida in the UFC.
Beat me to it.
All except the “regaining the belt” part. He does look really lean though, more so than he does when he steps in the cage even.
First thing I moticed.
Lyoto looks leaner than I think I’ve ever seen him. If he just shows up not needing to cut, he will be blindingly fast.
"Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong." - Dennis Miller
I've read that he barely cuts
Here’s wondering whether that’ll work out for him going into the future, strength/size-wise, even though he’s clearly got the speed down.
I agree with you. It’s amazing how quickly things change. After years undefeated, Lyoto finally got noticed by the wider fanbase after Tito, and then Thiago. The primetime show made him a star coupled with his destruction of Rashad. At that point he became the unbeatable fighter of legend, and then after the two Shogun fights, a lot of people feel like he’ll never get back to the belt. Shogun may always be his kryptonite, and Lyoto will have a long road back in Shogun stays healthy and defends the belt, but Lyoto is far from done. The only real damage he’s ever taken has been delivered by Shogun. I expect that finally having to overcome some adversity will bring him to new heights in the next two years.

The Dragon
Will soar again.
And in the heavens, he will reign supreme.
The Shogun may have slain the Dragon once…but if the dragon is reborn the proper way, the Shogun will perish.

As long as he's still drinking piss
there’s always gonna be a little humor in it.
West coast sucks a dick. 2Pac had nothing on Big and Easy E and Magic Johnson got HIV cause West Coast broads are dirty as hell. I wish I was from New Jersey because the shitty bagels and pizza I have out here are making my butthole bleed.
Lyoto
think already know is game plan. Work on kicks especially to the legs. We all know Rampage has damaged legs. Give those legs punishment and it’s pretty much over.
lol who's that?
he looks exactly like lyoto. hahaha.
