Remembering Mirko Cro Cop: The Pride Legend Will Never Fade

via www.pridefighting.us

When you love something, sometimes it's easier to live in the past. You can convince yourself that way that Weezer is still the band that made Pinkerton. That your girlfriend still has that sparkle in her eyes, still laughs at your jokes. You can convince yourself that Derek Jeter is still relevant. And you can still believe that Mirko Cro Cop is a dangerous fighter.

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filopovic once struck fear into the hearts of men. I know that is hard to believe. The guy that could barely finish a crippled Pat Barry? The same timid striker who looked ordinary against the Anthony Perosh's of the world? But it's easy to forget those performances. Four years of less than stellar performances, easily erased by the flashbulb intensity of memory.

Because it's the great moments we'll remember. It's easy to forget Cro Cop looking confused against Eddie Sanchez, searching for a fighter within himself that was no longer there. But forgetting the mighty Igor Vovchancin hitting the mat like a stubby little oak tree, eyes closed to the world, memories of dancing girls and vodka floating through his mind? That's a little harder. It's those moments that sustain us. They allow us, as fans, to tolerate a main event of Frank Mir and Mirko Cro Cop.

Five Great Cro Cop moments after the break.

Ufc_119_button_medium

Star-divide

5. Cro Cop didn't just enter a state needing to register himself as a deadly weapon. He needed to register two - his left and right leg. It was a tagline for the ages: Right leg, hospital. Left leg, cemetery. It was never more true than in his fight with Aleksander Emelianenko. Watch the speed, ferocity, and killer instinct on display here. Then tell me you didn't shudder, just a little.

4. The new and friendly Mirko Cro Cop, the vulnerable one that talks of retirement and probably watches reruns of Golden Girls on Oxygen - banish him from your mind. I prefer to recall this man. The man who looked the devil in the eye and never once blinked. The first fight between Cro Cop and Wanderlei Silva was a dream match. Cro Cop was representing K-1 and this was his first real fight for Pride (he had toyed around with Nobuhiko Takada at Pride 17). Silva was the fan favorite, the MMA wrecking ball who never took a backwards step. Fought under modified rules, the fight ended in a five round draw.

Mirko-filopivic_wanderlei-silva_medium

3. In the rematch, Silva wasn't so fortunate. This time around Cro Cop landed his devestating left high kick and left the Pride legend unconcious on the mat. This was once again the tale of two opposites. Polar opposites. Cro Cop was ice - a calm demeanor married to precision technical striking. Silva was fire. Jacked to the gills and actually heavier than Cro Cop for this fight, Wanderlei was like a rabid pitbull. What he lacked in technique he more than made up for with furious, furious rage. A great contrast and a great fight.

2. Even Mirko Cro Cop's losses are emblazened in our brains. Yes, Kevin Randleman was a former UFC Heavyweight Champion. Yes, he was a two time NCAA wrestling champion. Yes, he had legs to die for (if you were John Peretti) and a physique second to none. But Kevin Randleman wasn't supposed to beat Cro Cop in 2004. Funny how the ring makes the impossible, well, possible. A left hook sent Cro Cop realing and MMA had an all-time great upset.

Crocopbarnett253pride2006gp_medium

via photos.mmaweekly.com

1. For years Cro Cop had been an also ran. He never won a K-1 World Grand Prix. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fedor Emelianenko had crushed his dream of being Pride champion twice. Would he go down in history as the best heavyweight never to wear gold? Like all the greats, Cro Cop took his destiny into his own hands. On the same night he beat Silva, his birthday no less, the Croatian legend defeated Josh Barnett to become the Pride Absolute Grand Prix champion. The stoic champion was unable to control his emotion. With tears in his eyes, he had the Grand Prix title belt strapped around his waist. Champion at last.

This is the Cro Cop we remember. And, if only for a moment, the Cro Cop we will see in the cage at UFC 119. Will it be another moment for the ages? Or an inglorious loss to be painstakingly scrubbed from memory? We'll soon know as Cro Cop writes one of the final chapters of his story inside the cage in Indianapolis.

When I was living in Japan Cro-cop mania was in full effect.

The fight between him and Fedor was the craziest amount of promotion ever. That was the biggest fight ever if you ask me.

I always thought Yoshida-Ogawa was the biggest fight ever from the Japanese perspective. Either than or the Sapp-Hoost fights in K-1.

Weezer fans remembering Pinkerton fondly...

Is like CroCop fans remembering his loss to Kevin Randleman fondly. It was shit on for the first 10 years of its release before finally gaining some respect, but was still a pretty weak album, especially after their debut.

The Blue Album, on the other hand, is probably the better nostalgic memory to hold on to for this comparison.

The Blue Album...

was cool. It got a lot of airtime as a 16 year old, not as much now, but still good every once in a while.

But I’m on board with Snowden RE: their newer music. There’s a reason why the band is setting up tour dates to play exclusively Blue/Pinkerton concerts and none of the new stuff.

by Barack Lesnar on Sep 24, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

The Blue album will always have a space in my heart. That, Green Day’s Dookie, and Less Than Jake’s Losing Streak were the first contemporary albums I really got into back when I was just a lil’ fella. In my mind I’ve disassociated the Blue Album from everything else Weezer has done, and have no expectations for any of their new stuff.

BTW, Deftones are gonna be playing a show I’m working this Sunday. Alice in Chains is the headliner, and I think Mastodon will also be there.

by Balrog on Sep 24, 2010 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I seen them once before about 5 or 6 years ago good show, Deftones that is.

Alice In Chains can’t be the same any more. I’ve never seen Mastodon live but Blood & Thunder is one of the most metal songs of all time.

by doonerthesooner on Sep 24, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Alice in Chains can’t be the same but they put on a fantastic show. The new guy is good.

Mastadon is carrying the hard rock mantle in the states.

I’m gonna give Balrog head cancer now. Can you feel it? It might feel like radiating envy.

by Rufford on Sep 24, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I used the momentum of your envy and redirected it, I think I might have judo'd the cancer into a puppy or a little kid. Whatevs.

working a concert is definitely not the same as going as a fan. That being said Mastodon and Deftones were both good, and Alice in Chains was amazing. If I wasn’t around concerts all the time I would have been more onboard with the ludicrous sound levels used by Mastodon and the Deftones. Also woulda liked “Back to School” for nostalgia’s sake, but oh well.

R.I.P. Layne, AiC definitely didn’t sound quite the same but they still put on a hell of a show. New guy definitely has a stage presence, which helped a lot because Jerry Cantrell looked pretty rigid up there (not uptight rigid, more like “if I try for too much, I’m gonna have back problems tomorrow” rigid.)

by Balrog on Oct 2, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Weezer and Deftones

Used to be the shit…..now everything they put out is pure trash. For weezer it was everything from the blue album to maladroit was great. For the deftones the first two albums were the shit. Now they just blow.

i think CroCop still has a little in the tank. However i am not sure if he can compete at an Elite level anymore.

Strikers will always fade faster then grapplers( over reliance on speed vs. Technique) so it is what it is. I still like CroCop but I doubt he has anything for Mir. But boy would it make me happy to see one more left head kick before Mirkro fishes full time. I also love to see bjj win fights so either way I am psyched for this bout.

God Mark Hunt is insane

Also, that Ranallo call of the Randleman knockout is the closest thing MMA has to a “do you believe in miracles?” or “The Giants win the pennant!” voice-over moment.

Why does everyone love this call?

Mauro’s screeching hysterics do not make for good commentating, or even good hyperbole. And YES, I saw this fight when it still mattered.

by gzl5000 on Sep 24, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Michaels delivered “do you believe in miracles?” with clarity and grace. No one in MMA has even come remotely close, certainly not Mauro ‘hyperbole’ Ranallo.

I’d say Rogan’s “that guy is my hero” is the most genuine and clearly delivered post-fight call in MMA history. But it still doesn’t belong in the same stratosphere as many of the great calls from more traditional sports. To be honest, even the best MMA announcers are complete hacks when to compared to their stick & ball sports brethren.

They allow us, as fans, to tolerate a main event of Frank Mir and Mirko Cro Cop.

I think it’s a fairly meaningful fight. If Mirko wins, then Mir will probably never fight for the title again and the #5 HW in the UFC is wide open. Theres more credibility in the excuses used for his disappointments against Kongo and Gonzaga.

Even if he wins, I really doubt he can ever get the title, but he’d get enough credibility that the next guy to beat him could get a title shot without being sacrificed by a wrestler, similar to how Swick was used to give Hardy a shot.

I was into MMA long before Crcop but he was the first fighter I followeed and really cared about there success like I do with the sports teams I love so much. Before him it did not matter to me if I watched a pride event on a 1 month tape delay or not. But Mirko changed all that for me, I had to buy and watch his fights and know what happend then and now. Crocop and to a smaller part Wand were the first fighters who really pushed me over the edge of becoming a true MMA fan and taking a emotional investment in there career and the outcomes of there fights. If it was not for him, Wand and the old days of pride I really don’t know if I would be as Huge of a MMA fanatic as I am now ?

I’m not ready to rule it out yet. Mir has never been known for takedowns and he changes when he gets hit. I can’t think of another high level fighter that is more taylor made for sprawl and brawl. Mirko may not be Crocop any more, but he can still bang and Mir is no Barry when it comes to kickboxing.

Crocop took this fight for two reasons. 1. He has a warriors heart and doesn’t turn down fights. 2. The UFC parked a S#*t pile of money in front of him, in hopes of salvaging this PPV after Big Nog pulled out. That being said, Crocop isn’t going to come into a fight and embarrass himself by being tooled by Mir. He is going to give it his all and he just may put Mir away.

I would..

be wound up like a little kid on christmas eve if CroCop puts Mir away. Probably my favorite fighter to have ever entered the ring.

It really saddens me that I missed the entire Pride era. There’s a lot of DVDs, and the matches are still great, but it loses something when you already know who will win most of the big ones. Then again, I probably would have been flipping out and throwing things the day the UFC took over Pride, so at least I was spared that episode of outrage.

I’m a Mir fan, but this might be Cro Cop’s last chance at a Moment so it’s hard not to root for him.

You might not have known you were watching a big fight. JDS knocking Werdum out of the UFC will be regarded as a much more significant fight three years from now.

Saku

Could you also write the same type of article on Saku, is it worthwhile you think? Well to me it is since I am a fan, but maybe all has been said on him already, unless you choose another topic on Saku that no one has speculated on him about, like his drinking habit, just kidding

Great post!! You should have put up the YouTube video of Cro Cop pranks just as an added bonus. CC is no doubt a top 3 HW of all time. If we could get the CC that fought Wand to fight Mir, it would be a 1st round KO.

I just want to say...

Fantastic job, I might not like some of what you write, but the way you write is always excellent. The word usage in the piece was fantastic. Thanks for the posting.

CC’s staredown with Wandy + their fights = epic awesomeness. Thank you for being able to say what I was thinking in words.

No mention of his battles with Nog and Fedor? I love the back and forth that went on in those fights.

I know it probably won’t happen, but maybe we’ll all be surprised when we watch his fight with Mir. I’m glad CC beat Barry (and his axe kicks surprised me and had me jumping up and down), but that won’t cut it with Mir.

I’d actually really like to see CC rematch with Big Nog and even Gonzaga, too. I’d love it.

P.S. Jeter IS still relevant!!

Jeter is not relevant. He’s one of the worst starting shortstops in the league.

I think Crocop pulled out the axe kick cause there was no chance he was going to get taken down. Afterwards, Barry had this look of “Wow, Mirko fucking Crocop just axe kicked me.” He had a lot more axe kicks in K-1.

I've thought about it

and cannot come up with a way for Mir to win this fight. I just don’t see a scenario in my head outside of a lucky haymaker that has Mir winning.

LOL at Jeter not being relevant

I hate the Yankees as much as anyone, but Jeter is still one of best offensive shortstops in the game, is the captain of the reigning world champions, and just last year had one of the best seasons of his career. Sure, he’s having a bad year this year, but bad years happen in baseball. He’s still the straw that stirs the drink on a first place team in the best division in baseball.

Mirko wishes he was as ‘irrelevant’ as Derek Jeter.

lol at yankees fans getting mad as hell.

he’s also the worst defensive short stop and has been for several years now.

why?

is it b/c he doesn’t have any range? or is it b/c he has the arm strength of 7 y/o girl, or is it b/c he can’t hit for shit anymore??

I find it hard to hate the Cubs. I mean, how do you hate a team that has sucked that bad for that long? Even when they are good, they find a way to screw things up. They are the epitome of lovable losers. Even their fans acknowledge it (except for during those rare bouts of delusion where they think the Cubs can actually win it all).

Actually, he made a decent defensive rebound in 2009. Baseball Prospectus, who were among the first to start harping on his awful defense, had him ranked as a solid defensive player last year.

Amazing that instead of commenting on the story about crocop people are talking about weezer and jeter

Weezer is alright until Pinkerton and Jeter sucks cause he plays for the yankees.

Cro Cop will always be a favorite because of his Pride Highlight reel. Fans have a hard time giving up on Wand and Cro Cop because of their Pride careers. While other fighters have people turn their backs on them, these two along with Big Nog seem to be immune to this part of MMA fandom.

I think a lot of that has to do with those being pillar fighters that many of us have followed — the first fighters that many of us started to follow. Plus, it’s hard to hate any of those guys. They’ll offer you great advice on how to help you out but they can also kick major ass.

For me, Wandy is one of the fighters that I first started to follow. It hurts to see him lose, but it is unlike anything else to see him win. HE WILL GET THAT BELT SOMEDAY!!

I remember getting into MMA

and watching those CC fights thinking, “Holy. Shit.” Dude scared the crap out of me for years. His name alone was enough to give me shivers. It’s sad seeing him now. I was ecstatic when he beat Barry, but it wasn’t the most amazing performance. He was lucky Barry broke a hand and foot and was too in love with CC to pounce on him when he had him down. Mir won’t make that mistake. I figure the Mir/CC fight will go similar to the Mir/Kongo fight. Mir will knock CC down, or get him down somehow, and then choke him out. I hope I’m wrong, cause I would give just about anything to see Mir’s head get kicked into the rafters.

by pud333 on Sep 24, 2010 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

If Mir has a chance with a sub I think it will be a knee bar or some sort of leg lock. Just a feeling.

I’m hoping he gets a taste of significant success when he knocks Mir out (right down the middle) and it turns him into a training machine. Then he gets demolished by a big wrestler who knows better than to stand with him.

Crocop has me day dreaming.

by Rufford on Sep 24, 2010 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Crocop has me day dreaming.

Me too. Some days I think all it would take for the old Cro Cop to come back is for one good left high kick KO. Just one. That if CC had a little taste of blood, it would revive the hunger in him.

It was nice to see him throwing so many kicks in the Barry fight. For a while there, he hardly threw any at all.

by pud333 on Sep 24, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Can anyone explain as to WHY CC has faltered? A lot of people tend to blame the cage. Is that a huge reason? Did he lose speed or accuracy? Power? Does he get hit easy or more often, did he lose head movement? Is it a matter of being more tentative and not throwing strikes as much?

by ChiCubs23 on Sep 24, 2010 2:11 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

He admitted it was hard to get used to the cage, and he was confused in his first UFC bout, but that Gonzaga head kick really scrambled him, maybe. That was hard to watch.

by pud333 on Sep 24, 2010 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It wasn't the Gonzaga kick...

He looked TERRIBLE against Eddie Sanchez too. He never looked right after the OWGP win.

by xfreekx on Sep 24, 2010 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Also seem to remember him saying his sparring had got weak. Evidently he changed that.

by Rufford on Sep 24, 2010 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions

to add, I don’t think the cage itself had much to do with anything. With CC, it’s all mental.

by pud333 on Sep 24, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, but the cage did have a bit to do with it....

Cro Cop’s entire style was built upon stalking people, getting them into corners and unloading on them. In the UFC he has to chase people because there is no cornering them.

While i agree that it’s definitely been largely mental, the cage has had at least some affect.

by xfreekx on Sep 24, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Several factors

Age. Surgeries. Different combat arena (corners vs. more circular cage). Different surfaces — I can’t find the interview, but I recall CC stating that the actual floor surfaces are different. Less to prove — he FINALLY got a championship and doesn’t seem to be as hungry.

Having his way with opponents

who aren’t great strikers has also diminished his defense and the variety of his stand-up I feel. Back in the K-1 days he would quite often use his lead right leg to throw leg kicks, teeps, side and even high kicks. Against some of the cans/grapplers he faced in MMA he could just unload the LHK and the left straight whenever he wanted, without the set-ups and without fearing a return punch. I don’t think K-1 Mirko would have let Gonzaga land a high kick on him.

Of course declining reflexes play into his getting caught more often, they were razor-sharp in the Wanderlei fight, and his in/out explosiveness has decreased massively.

A guy with a striking-only offense and whose grappling MO was purely defensive (no TDs, just epic TDD for instance) is going to struggle without the stomps, soccer kicks and especially downed knees. Folks in Pride were more reluctant to attempt the TD in case Mirko sprawled and jammed those tree trunks into their skull (see Heath/Yamamoto), assisting him in keeping it standing. He also used to be better at exploding out of a clinch.

But yeah, age/better opposition/injuries/LOOONG fight career are also key factors.
