Shut him up……you try being on a close quarters trip with some ass that has the balls to call you out for the sake of the cameras. Steroids or not Chael could take Vanderlei and his Curly Howard hat and use them both to check the oil in that van

Gotta love Wanderlei

I can’t wait to see him fight again. I think he needs a warm up fight or something because he has been out recovering for a while. I eventually want to see him fight Akiyama or Leben,

Hmmm

That’s not exactly what I was expecting out of a video where Wandy gets in someone’s face. I’m pretty sure if he was in your face you’d know it, hahah.

That was truly awesome. Sonnen looked shook as fuck.

I haven’t seen Chael speechless in years:) I like that Wand didn’t really let it go and smile and say it was cool either. Just stared at him.

There was no country music and no ho-down in that car… If they were in a cell, Wandy would have told Chael what bunk to sleep in. Too funny.

Where did all the big talk go:)? Wand “punctured” the hot air balloon.

I can't believe I'm going to defend Sonnen, but here goes...

I don’t think Sonnen was shook, and he’d probably fare just fine establishing dominance in a prison cell environment.

1.) Wandy’s English is difficult to understand, so one word answers as ambivilant as “sure” don’t make me think he’s sincere, even if he understood what was being said.

2.) They were both enroute to promote an upcoming event. What sense would it make to start an argument with the guy you’re sharing the stage with?

3.) Wandy vs. Sonnen would be a great fight. Expect a shit talking escalation at a later date, but make no mistake, Sonnen doesn’t fight for America, or pride, or anything else. He fights for money, and if there’s no sizzle, or up side in beefing with Wandy, he won’t do it.

/can’t believe he just defended Chael “The Cheater” Sonnen

Now don't go making sense!

We all know that the reason why Chael didn’t say anything was because he was scared to death of a guy walking around at 50%. (Wand’s own words)

Seriously though, Chael was trying to be professional about things there and I’m sure that was hella awkward. If they have a match signed up eventually I’d expect Chael will do just as much talking as ever and I can’t wait for it personally. I hope they don’t for Wand’s sack though…

by Empty Thoughts on Sep 23, 2010 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I think Chael was pretty uncomfortable, and isn’t used to being called out for his shit in person. There’s an athlete vs. fighter thing going on there. I’ll be more honest than Chael and agree that he wasn’t pissing himself in terror, but I do think he was unnerved. He didn’t try to talk it out or explain himself. I think he knew he’d been way out of line, and, in the parlance of dogfighting, turned cur. As to your point 3, I think you’re right, but that’s also pretty much the whole thing with Chael. A person who’s only in this for money or fame, and doesn’t stand for anything beyond that just doesn’t have the kind of heart that Wanderlei does…and it showed right there. Can you imagine Chael calling someone out face to face over principles? I don’t really see that, so I think shit just got real for him:) so to speak.

What's this war in the heart of nature? Why does nature vie with itself? The land contend with the sea? Is there an avenging power in nature? Not one power, but two?

As little as I like Sonnen, I doubt his heart rate went up much.

Wandy is a true bad ass, and I’d take him over Sonnen in a street fight, but I highly doubt Sonnen would engage in a street fight, given everything he has to lose.

Wandy has the same things to lose at this point, but I’d imagine the difference in their upbringing and environments plays a factor in the actual possibility of a fight going down.

Maybe it’s the flu talking (been sick all week), but grown-ass men with something to lose don’t fight for pride alone.

I love the Brazilian folk wisdom of “Show Respect, keep your teeth”, but this ain’t Brazil. This is America, Jack! Knock out a guy’s chicklets in a street fight (with the exception of Austin, TX), and prepare for a legal defense from your cell, or a nice payout to the vitcim (read loser) of the fight. Guys like War Machine and Monsoon might think pressing charges is for pussies, and you might too, but a court of law would see it differently…

I didn't say that the USA doesn't have similar rough neighborhoods, but I doubt Sonnen comes from one.

TUF has plenty of fighters who display the kind of short fuse, my rep means everything attitude, many of whom are American, born and bred. The idea that being shook means anything to someone like Sonnen. Why fight for free when you get paid to do it?

then don't generalize things

and keep them individually, that’s much easier… as for Sonnen, I know he’s just a showman, I’m not surprised he backed down, he’s just for show, not that there’s anything wrong with it, I rather keep things civil too. But if you talk all the stuff he does, then he should be able to back them up, but again, I understand why he doesn’t since he’s a phony (the irony since that’s what he calls Silva).

by Orcus on Sep 23, 2010 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

you are correct that Sonnen is phoney

He’s a natural politician, and that requires tons of that attribute.

The shit that he talked was indefensible in any context other than building sizzle for a fight, but he did that part really well. Since he denied a majority of it, why would he repeat such nonsense on camera?

It just strikes me as odd how many posters on this think Sonnen would be scared in this scenario. In my view, his inner lightbulb is going off registering a future money making fight built on epic shit talking, to put the entire Portugeuse speaking world on fire enough to buy a PPV and hope for Sonnen to go down at Wandy’s hands.

Also, does anyone think the dynamic would be different if Sonnen is sitting behind Wandy, instead of vice versa?

Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?
George Carlin

by Snatchl on Sep 23, 2010 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Wandy would have done the same if he was sitting in front. The thing about Sonnen, is that he did not take back anything he said, the only thing I can think of that he took back (or rather neglect that he said it in the first place) was his statements regarding Lance Armstrong, but everything else he hasn’t denied.

On a side note, I actually think it would have been profitable for him to talk crap about Wandy in front of him, he’ll need a big money fight when he comes back (if he loses the right for a rematch) and Wandy is a big name, and someone who gets defensive rather easily. That’s all he’d need to work his ‘magic’ to hype a fight, because unlike AS, Wandy will talk back, with really bad pronunciation, another attribute Sonnen could go after.

As for Sonnen being scared, I really think he was in a way. It’s one thing to fight in MMA in front of everybody to see and with not only medical personal close but also referees to help prevent anything really bad happening to a fighter. It’s something completely different to fight inside a van, where you can’t use your wrestling and against someone as heavy handed as Wandy who only needs to throw some punches to get the job done, and in front of a camera and with no one to break it up.

the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

by Orcus on Sep 23, 2010 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Its not about an actual fight or everything residing on a “rep”, its an “in the moment thing”. Its that elusive “respect” thing that Chael can’t understand… if he didn’t understand what it was, he just learned it.

Its easy to talk about people when they’re not around or when there’s mediating individuals involved… its a whole other world to have to talk those words to someone’s face. There doesn’t have to be a fight but words have incredible power, if you’re gonna be careless about them be prepared for someone else to take them very seriously.

People act as if words have no meaning… you do realize people get sued for slander every day. His shtick might of got him his 15 minutes… but he won’t be remembered as a champion, but merely a clown who was a good wrestler.

Simple

Matt Hughes would snort dismissively and drive away slowly on his tractor, Sonnen would attempt to run for a local political office, and I assume Brock would consume a small village, leaving a sole survivor alive. The survivor’s attempts at revenge would amuse Lesnar

seriously, do people here that keeps saying this ever seen him fight outside the UFC?

the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

by Orcus on Sep 23, 2010 6:40 AM EDT up reply actions

His fighting outside of the UFC is a thing of the past,

so why base any arguments on something that hasn’t happened in over 3 1/2 years? Especially when we’ve seen that the take down defense that he had, isn’t quite what he currently has…

I love Wand as much as the next guy, but he has won 2 of his last 7 fights. He is no longer the beast that he once was in Pride and living in the past won’t change that.

by Empty Thoughts on Sep 23, 2010 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, I bring in the argument because I was responding to someone saying he has ‘never’ been able to stop takedowns. And his fights in the UFC hasn’t been against wrestlers to show the flip side to this (with exceptions to Rampage, to which the fight did not go to the ground). And he’s 2-7, one loss to a prime HW in Mirko, a loss to Hendo (to which he was sick, I know that’s no excuse, but it’s true), a close fight with Chuck when Chuck still had a chin, a loss to Page which is legit, and a loss to Ace Ventura to which I honestly gave him the W, but he lost in the judges eyes, but the point is he didn’t look bad. Then again, I am an apologist for the man, and you can scratch all the stuff I just said, the only thing I’m trying to refute is his ‘terrible’ TDD, the rest is just me having faith in his comeback :p

the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

by Orcus on Sep 23, 2010 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Focusing just on his TDD we can look at the Chuck fight and go from there. I haven’t seen the fight since it happened so I’m probably remembering it poorly, but from what I recall Chuck took him down at will for points.

I’m not saying his TDD is missing, I’m just saying I don’t think it has ever really been tested outside of a couple of fighters in his prime and that in general I probably have to agree with “radamez85” in how a fight would Chael would play out. Especially at this point in his career. Chael would take him down and maul him for the duration…

by Empty Thoughts on Sep 23, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

ah come on

the take downs on that fight was unexpected, even Chuck said afterwards that he did that because no one would expect him to do that, Wandy included. Had he been fighting someone who’s more of a wrestler he’d have been more conservative with his striking.

the following two things are signs of weaknesses:
stay silent when it's needed to speak up, and speak up when it's needed to stay silent.

by Orcus on Sep 23, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying that anybody expected Chuck to take him down. I am saying though that after a few of them you’d think Wand would start expecting them and be able to stuff them if his TDD was worth noting. He didn’t though and I’m not sure it is worth noting. Anymore at least.

by Empty Thoughts on Sep 23, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

but he probably didn’t train for it, that’s what I’m saying. before fighting someone like Chuck, I’m sure Wandy didn’t train for TDD, athletes need to train certain aspects of fighting to keep them sharp. Lil Nog said he didn’t train for wrestling in his last fight and it showed.

Porto Alegre, Sao Paulo, Rio, Recife, Joao Pessoa, Natal, and a bunch of smaller cities like Pipa.

A kid, a kid, held me and my husband at gunpoint for his Nike sneakers. I’ve witnessed other people get robbed, I’ve gone into stores that have JUST been robbed, in Sao Paulo I saw a guy get shot in the head a couple of feet away from me on a public street (and it did not make the news). The poverty in Brazil is like nothing else I’ve seen. There were places where my husband, who is Brazilian, told me to not get out of the car or not speak because people will hear my accent and try and steal my things. Crazy things like that.

by Keren on Sep 23, 2010 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

well

that should definitely scare anyone who has gone through all that situation, but to be honest, in my 31 years of life, I haven’t witnessed a single robbery or death, and I have travelled pretty much to all corners of Brazil. I guess I should consider myself one of the lucky few? Where the hell are you guys going? to favelas (to which most are peaceful)? I do agree with your last sentiment about not speaking in public in a place like the beaches of Rio though, too many street kids, but besides that…

question, why do you guys travel to so many different places in Brazil? I’d understand a city or two if your husband has family here and wants to visit, but why go to all those places if Brazil is filled with so many "crimes" that you described and have witnessed? Honest question.

Brazil is a very beautiful country. Absolutely beautiful but riddled with crime. You really have never witnessed a single robbery? Where do you live? Within my first week of visiting Brazil I witnessed two robberies — and I was in a small city — Joao Pessoa.

I’ve traveled throughout Brazil because my husband has 99% of his family there. I personally don’t think I’ve seen that many cities in Brazil. Not visit Brazil because of crime? It’s something I’ve learned to accept and acknowledge when I travel to Brazil. It’s not something nice, but it’s something honest. Plus, why should I not visit a beautiful country because of the crime? Does that mean I shouldn’t visit Israel because of crazy suicide bombers?

"Girls are mean." Lisa Ward

by Keren on Sep 23, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

hell

Israel is a place I would never visit! my brother converted to Judaism and travelled there recently, I told him he was carazy… and yes, I never been robbed…

I live in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, next time you come to my city, you’ll be safe (but the city is boring) :p

again, I understand you coming to visit because of your husband, but you say he has family here, does his family live throughout the country like that? Brazil is a huge country, with many different cultures throughout. You mention places from the northeast all the way to the south, including small cities… usually families in Brazil don’t spread out like that, they stick to the same place (it’s part of our culture). The places you have mentioned are no where alike, they are very different from each other, and the crime rates for each also differs. Places like São Paulo and Rio are where there is high crime rates, a place like Natal is very peaceful, a place like Porto Alegre also very peaceful. Recife can be rough as well I guess. but again, different places, you’re saying your husband has family throughout Brazil like that? My travelling were mostly due to my job when I was younger (I was a tourist guide), so I know the ins and outs mostly.

at the end of the day, no matter where you go you’ll find crimes (US included), it depends where you go. Brazil has a high crime rate overall, I’m not disputing that, but it’s not rampant throughout society, it’s mostly in isolated places that have a low income (I’m not saying there is no robberies outside favelas, there is, plenty, but the crimes occur mostly in notorious favelas).

In fairness

I lived in the projects in Sacramento for three months. We had to sleep on the ground a few times because of gang wars. They’d warn everybody that day that there would be a shootout tonight and to stay down. I seen people beat and robbed everyday. We couldn’t play outside in the courtyard cause of random gun fire and junkies. In the first month, someone stole literally every furniture item out of my grandparent’s house, in broad day light. Never saw the police in the projects once.

When he was a baby, his parents divorced and both got remarried — huge families. He has a bunch of brothers and sisters and hundreds of cousins and Aunts and Uncles. Even his great grandmother is alive. He doesn’t have family in all of those cities that I mentioned, but we traveled there regardless (I wanted to go). There are still some places I’d like to go to — never been to Bahia and Fortaleza.

There’s danger everywhere you go, but even around nice places there were robberies. I feel that it is more rampant in Brazil than in places like the U.S. Plus the cops in Brazil don’t do anything about it and that’s why people usually don’t even bother calling the cops. I’ve been told that they usually don’t even show up when called. That’s ridiculous.

I seriously laughed, I’m sorry, I was going to accept all of it until you mentioned the cops… whatever, keep on thinking that way, I can’t convince you.

have a nice trip to Bahia though, Porto Seguro is my favorite place, and very peaceful, but I’m sure you’ll find crimes there, they seem to follow you, but I trully wish you a safe trip :p

In shitty places here in the states,

the police don’t come even if you do call. Or they show up two hours later. Nobody trusts them to help either. In fact, in the hood, children are afraid of the police.

people in the guettos here are afraid of the police too

there are a bunch of crooked ones, but the main reason is because when they go in to a favela is usually in wars against the drug lords, and they careless shoot people (many times innocent people), and that’s the main reason.

Its exactly the same here

They kick in the door and don’t care who they shoot. They hit old ladies, moms, kids. Sometimes its the wrong house and they still shoot people.

Why would I lie about the cops?

My father-in-law was having a huge party and there were a lot of cars parked outside. Some punk kids stole a bunch of radio’s and crap from the cars. We didn’t call the cops because as was explained to me, sometimes they don’t come, sometimes they come late, and if they do come it’s just worse — what if they actually catch the criminals? They’ll bombard my father-in-law’s home.

I’m not making any of this up. Why would I? If you can’t accept the way your country is, then don’t ‘laugh’ at me for telling you the truth.

didn’t say you were lying… you just brought that up by yourself. I laugh because you have a ‘hollywood’ mentality about Brazil, but hey, if you think you know it from visiting all those places, I’m not going to tell you the contrary. keep thinking that, it’s fine, your husband’s family seem a bit coco for coco puffs too. just saying…

Wtf? I have a Hollywood view of Brazil? What does that mean? How is my husband’s family coco?

it means you have a view based on films, and they are coco because they sound like they are…

My views on Brazil are based on my experiences there and my husband’s — who was born and raised there and lived there for 25 years.

doesn’t change the fact that you have a holliwood view on it IMO. meh, you don’t get it, we have different views. ok, your husband lived here for 25 years? good for him, I lived here for 31, so what? different views… You think Brazil is filled with crimes, you say you spent time here and you have witnessed that. ok, I don’t view it that way, I have been living here for 31 years… again, different views… you first said “wandy is right, Brazil is crazy”, when he was stating just the opposite, Chael saying that here when you bow you get your wallet stolen, Wandy says “you don’t know Brazil, so don’t talk about it”, Wandy doesn’t agree with you nor Chael… again, different views… you say you went to at least 7 different Brazilian cities (and many more unnamed smaller ones) and you saw the same things, even though they couldn’t be more different from one another and couldn’t be further from one another regionally, and you say you were ‘visiting’ your husband’s huge spread out coco family, ok then… kinda hard to digest all of that, but at the end you feel that way, what am I gonna do? different views I guess…

I meet some Brazilians on a cruise years ago and when my wife expressed interest in visiting Brazil we were told that unless we planned on going to one of the major cities and staying in well traveled tourist areas that we really shouldn’t. They told us that they loved their country and would never live elsewhere, but that it wasn’t the safest place to visit if you didn’t know what you were getting into.

Based on that and half of the media I’ve seen, I’m perfectly fine not visiting. It sounds fucking crazy just like Keren said…

I believe you and Karen as well, I’m just wondering why she’d return so many times to so many different places if it’s just ‘crazy’ over here.

I doubt she returned and think she most likely just planned out a long trip to what is supposed to be a amazingly beautiful country without really realizing what it involved.

When the wife and I visited Jamaica we planned out our trip based on what we wanted to do and see without really researching the actual areas we would be visiting. It wasn’t until we arrived and were told by the tour guides that some of the areas were were going to be visiting weren’t the best that we realized we might of made a mistake. Thankfully we hadn’t and besides seeing some extremely poor areas (and one mugging), we saw what we hoped to and came home safe.

The choice for us there though was to possibly have wasted a couple of thousand dollars while also having to rebook everything at the last minute to stay in the safer areas of the country, or just go ahead and hope for the best. We went with hoping for the best, but we were much younger and if we had to make the decision again today we’d probably just rebook and take the loss. I’m betting that it was probably something similar there.

This was a perfect opportunity for Chael to come out and say “Hey man, I was just selling the fight any way I could. I wasn’t being serious, it’s all a joke.”

But no

I took it like, Wandy is saying you better stfu or else the Brazillian mob is comming after you. Not a direct threat, more like a warning of what others might do, not him. I agree with other posters that Chael seemed indifferent to it all.

They needs to make a TUF season as these guys as coaches.

After deciding to read all the comments before watching the video, the video itself turned out to be rather anti-climactic.

by OptimusPiss on Sep 23, 2010 4:38 PM EDT reply actions

I thought by the title,

it was just gonna be wand talking shit about how chael tested positive for roids and how he disrespected the UFC for doing so.

by OptimusPiss on Sep 23, 2010 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

so arrogant....

at around the 4:22 mark chael says; “thats not totally true, ive been to brazil actually.”

wtf???

so you don’t speak the language, you don’t know the culture and you say that to someone who was born and raised there?? so you went on some little 2 week vacation where you likely stayed at a fancy hotel or resort or went there to train for a few days and you know the country???

he needs to go down. i hope he the suspension holds up for an entire year.

by phantom5691 on Sep 23, 2010 6:18 PM EDT reply actions

well...

i guess dana wont be bringing chael around anymore to represent the ufc!!! hahahahaha!!
